LOVE Me Tender," Elvis Presley's first movie, is also his most unusual. It was
the only time the King played a supporting role, and it was the only movie not
originally conceived with him in mind.
According to a documentary accompanying a new 50th-anniversary DVD out this
week, "Love Me Tender" began life as "The Reno Brothers," a script that had been
kicking around 20th Century Fox for a while.
It got dusted off when producer Hal Wallis and MGM - who had signed Presley to
separate contracts - got bogged down in developing what became two of the best

ELVIS: PLAYING IT HOT IN '55

It appears a local radio station aired (and likely taped) this Saturday evening
19 Mar'55 performance at the Eagle's Hall in Houston, Texas.
From Presley's first "Well ..." it's clear how confident he was; the crowd just
eats it up. Launching into "Good Rockin' Tonight," swinging through an
unreleased-at-the-time cover of "I Got A Woman" and closing with "That's All
Right, Mama," Elvis, Scotty and Bill rock the house!
This is the coolest known Sun-era live recording of Elvis Presley, bar none.
Sadly, this concert has never been released with its pitch corrected.
ALL LPs and CDs present tracks 1, 3, 4 and 5 speeded way up, while track 2 runs
much too slowly; however, with the proper speed adjustments exclusively heard
here at :
http://www.elvisrecordings.com/houston1.htm
The music comes alive with the pure excitement of the Hillbilly Cat!One even
notices moments like Elvis shouting "let's get hot" during several Scotty Moore
solos!
If this ever gets reissued properly (and it should) 'Get Hot' would be a most
appropriate title.
It should be noted here the tape mix is voice-heavy, but it captures what it was
like to BE THERE in 1955.

The Killer Stays Cocky As Ever.

Jerry Lee Lewis doesn't do phoners. So, when you want to interview the rock
legend who jump-started a generation with songs like "Great Balls of Fire," you
have to e-mail his manager, who e-mails his lawyer, who goes over the questions
and then submits the queries to Lewis.
While it's kind of annoying, the process seems to work. Here are "The Killer's"
thoughts on a few topics including rock 'n' roll and his upcoming new album,
"The Pilgrim."
Question: You're playing a concert here on Wednesday. Some people in Sioux Falls
are wondering if you can still kick out a wild and flamboyant show at age 70?
Answer: I still rock 'n' roll as well as I ever did. I probably won't set the
piano on fire anymore - the fire marshals kind of frown on that. But people seem
to love my shows.
Q: Your new record, "The Pilgrim," was slated for a March release. How did it
feel to record with the likes of Little Richard, Mick Jagger, Toby Keith and Kid
Rock?
A: Is it slated for a March release? No, I'm kidding; the date just keeps
changing. We all had a lot of fun making this album. I've worked with Richard
for years and always enjoy it. Mick and I have worked together, too. It's kind
of funny, but in the song that Mick and I do, "Evening Gown," our voices sound
remarkably alike. I never noticed that before. Toby Keith was a pleasure to work
with.
Kid and and I really hit it off. We did "Whole Lotta Shakin' " live on the
Willie Nelson special last year and he got up on the piano like I used to do.
When the song was over, I took the keyboard cover off the piano and just handed
it out to the audience. When we left the stage, they were still passing that
cover around the audience! All in all, it was great working with those guys and
every other artist on the album! There's so many talented people on this album,
just so much good music. I'm really proud of it.
Q: What's the best song on "The Pilgrim?"
A: The best song? I can't even begin to tell you. They're all good, but I think
my personal favorite is "Twilight" by Robbie Robertson.
Q: Are you going to perform some of the material from "The Pilgrim" here in
Sioux Falls?
A: I'm sure I'll do a song or two from the album. I've been performing "Rock and
Roll" and "Before the Night is Over" in my past few shows. But, you know, I
really don't ever know what I'm going to play. I don't work from a song list. I
just play what I feel like playing.
Q: Where did your manic stage flamboyance, like kicking the bench away, sitting
on the keys, come from? Was it practiced or did you just move as the moment
compelled you to?
A: I was just giving them hard down rock and roll that first time when I
kicked it over. They loved it so I just kept on doing it.
Q: As a man who grew up in a religious home, was it painful or frustrating to
hear people call your songs the "devil's music?"
A: No, it never really bothered me what people said. I've always known that my
talent was God-given.
Q: Have you seen "Walk the Line?" If so, did you agree with the portrayal of you
in the movie?
A: No, I haven't seen it yet. I'll probably see it when it comes out on DVD.
Several people that I know have seen it, though, and they said Waylon Payne did
a really good job. I met him a few weeks ago and my daughter, Phoebe, told me
later that he walked off and fainted. Can you believe that?
Q: Why do you think more young rockers don't play the piano?
A: A piano has 88 strings; a guitar has 6. The piano is a much more complex
instrument.
Q: If there hadn't been the backlash from you marrying Myra, would you have been
bigger than Elvis?
A: It's been said many times that I would have been.
Q: You've been alive through the entire lifetime of rock 'n' roll. In your
opinion, who are the most important musicians in the history of the genre?
A: The most important stylists in musical history are Hank Williams, Al Jolsen,
Jimmy Rogers and Jerry Lee Lewis. Hank Williams' writing is distinctive, and
you'll never hear a Hank Williams with a sharp note in it. He sang everything
flat. Jimmy Rogers, the "Singing Brakeman" started the whole thing as a kind of
"blues yodeller." Al Jolsen was the first crooner; he'd walk out without a
microphone and just grab the audience by crooning directly to him. And my style
is distinctive because I just naturally blended boogie woogie, gospel and rock
'n' roll. I never said I was the greatest, just the best.
Q: Do you still carry a gun?
A: Not often. I do still collect guns, and I'll carry one if I think I need
it.
Q: What song do you want played at your funeral?
A: Well, I think that question's a little premature. I haven't got that far yet.

Priscilla offended by tabloid headline.
Priscilla Presley says she is offended by suggestions there is something wacky
about her family. Tabloid magazines this week labelled as "kooky kabuki" her
daughter Lisa Marie's marriage to musician Michael Lockwood in Japan, with both
wearing kimonos.
"It does offend me," Presley told AAP in Sydney. "It was not wacky in any sense
of the word because you appreciate a culture and you appreciate tradition, that
is wacky for somebody to say that."Lisa Marie and Lockwood exchanged vows in a
traditional Japanese ceremony on January 22, both wearing traditional Japanese
costumes. It was a fourth marriage for Lisa Marie who has previously been
married to Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson and Danny Keough, the father of her two
children. Priscilla Presley walked her daughter down the aisle and gave her
away.
"The wackyness isn't on our end," said Presley. "I don't think we have ever been
known to be wacky."Maybe having lived our whole lives in front of everyone,
things might look that way but this was so well thought out and she is very
happy." Presley described Lisa Marie's wedding as "beautiful". "The wedding was
everything she wanted and the mood was so tranquil and very traditional in
dress," she said. Priscilla Presley arrived in Australia on Saturday for the
worldwide launch of her bed linen range with Australian fashion designer Bruno
Schiavi, titled The Priscilla Presley Collection. The 60-year-old was married to
Elvis from 1967 to 1973 and has two children, Lisa Marie with Presley and
Navarone Garibaldi with partner Marco Garibaldi. She acknowledged that Elvis,
who died of a heart attack in 1977, was always going to be a big part of her
life.
"It was such an impactful era that I think everyone feels they own a little bit
of Elvis," she said after the launch at Sydney's inner city Myer department
store. "As far as separating myself, I can't really deny that was history and I
was very much a part of history in that sense. "It was a great time, a great era
and a great loss".

Elvis Well Over One Billion Now - Source:
Ernst Jorgenson.
Hey you all, I had a chance to read an interesting letter today from Ernst
Jorgenson to a friend of mine in the music business and Ernst has little doubt
in his mind that Elvis not only has sold over a billion records, but has outsold
the Beatles (who would be second) by a great deal.
I will try to get the letter and post it when I can, but the points I recall are
as follows. For one, Elvis had a huge lead being first out of the gate and
being, of course, the number one selling artist of the 1950s and an
unprecedented sales phenomenon to that point at that. And even though people act
as if Elvis somehow musically went away in the 1960s while making his movies,
Ernst mentioned that he was still the number two selling artist in the decade at
that time only behind the Beatles. He mentioned that people should get a copy of
Billboard where it lists its greatest artists (through the 20th Century) and
make note of the point scoring system where points are awarded to an artist for
their record achievements and make note of the fact that Elvis exceeds 5000
points while the second place Beatles barely passed the 3,000 mark overall. As
he mentioned, Elvis was #1 in the 50s, #2 in the 60s and #11 in the 70s while
the Beatles didn't even register in the top 20 during the decade of the 70s.
Ernst mentions too, that Elvis' 70s ranking in that book is also artifically low
because it has not been updated with Elvis' record sales from 77 through the end
of 79.
He also pointed out that Elvis was well ahead of the Beatles still in 1970 and
that Elvis - worldwide - sold excellently in the 70s while the Beatles had
disbanded.
Also, from his talks with industry execs. with RCA etc., Elvis' sales from the
period of 77-80 were unmatched worldwide and truly put the icing on the cake.
And it is those sales records that Ernst and others have continually looked for
with him saying that they have found some of what they were looking for.
(whatever that means as I wish he would give specifics) He did reference - for
example - Moody Blue as not even being represented for even half its sales US
sales saying they had the proof on it. (Why has there been no certification
upgrade as of yet I do not know)
He did mention, though, that the Beatles marketing and sales were much better in
the 90s, but that Elvis already had a significant lead, never went
away and has always been a steady seller worldwide with events such as the
Anniversary of his death always helping to spark sales worldwide. There was also
mention that Elvis has been around for fifty years now and that with so many
years gone by and so many different outlets for record sales (like Time Life and
various specials as seen on TV) Ie. I have never heard of it, but he mentioned
an album that came with posters called Elvis From Hollywood in the 70s - sold
over TV - that sold millions upon millions that is not counted and so on.
Has anyone heard of this album? Apparently, it was a several record set and came
with record album size photos of Elvis in Concert. This was just an example of
many Ernst gave where Elvis sold millions upon million of records and they show
up no where in his RIAA statistics. Oh, as to Moody Blue, he did not give a
specific number but did say it would not surprise him if Moody Blue were truly
Elvis' only 10 million selling album. He also said Aloha from Hawaii numbers are
low too and gave other examples I do not remember.

The Bright & Exciting Future of the Graceland
Visitor Experience.
Following is a press release from EPE's parent company, CKX, Inc.:
Company Looks to Preserve Elvis Presley's Historic Home, While Adding to
Visitors' Experiences and the Memphis Economy
NEW YORK, Feb. 23, 2006 - Capitalizing on the ever-growing national and
international fascination with Elvis Presley, CKX, Inc. (Nasdaq: CKXE) -- which
controls Elvis Presley Enterprises and substantially all assets comprising the
Presley estate -- has held meetings with prominent Memphis, Tennessee officials
to explore ways to expand upon and further promote the legacy of the King of
Rock and Roll.
With Graceland already one of the five most visited home museums in the nation
and the most famous home in America after the White House, the discussions have
focused on CKX's desire to grow the Graceland experience as the centerpiece of
the Whitehaven section of Memphis. While plans and designs have not been
finalized, CKX outlined significant aspects of the proposal to officials.
Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CKX, commented,
"As we are upon the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley's explosion into our
culture, it is only fitting that Graceland assumes an even more prominent role
in American culture and tourism."
Working in conjunction with Bob Weis Design Island Associates, a world-renowned
design firm, the goal is to enhance the visitor's experience in the area
surrounding Graceland while preserving the integrity of the original mansion.
"For years, Elvis Presley Enterprises and the Presley family have envisioned a
project like this," said Jack Soden, Chief Executive Officer of Elvis Presley
Enterprises. "We are thrilled to be able to move this concept forward."
Sillerman added, "To date, Elvis's fans have only seen a small fraction of the
hundreds of thousands of Elvis artifacts currently warehoused. We're thrilled
that beginning next month, with the Elvis '56 and Elvis After Dark exhibits and
continuing through the proposed expansion, fans will have the opportunity to
view more and more of this never-before-seen array of items."
The Elvis '56 exhibit is part of Graceland's year-long celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the year Elvis Presley's career exploded and the music and
popular culture of the world changed forever. The exhibit highlights his
historic television appearances, his memorable concerts, his first mega-hit
recordings, his first movie, the introduction of the big business of Elvis
merchandising, and the first home his success allowed him to purchase for his
family.
The Elvis After Dark exhibit is themed around that fact that, for much of his
life, Elvis Presley was a "night person." After the sun went down, he'd
go on after-hours shopping sprees at department stores; rent out the Memphis
Fairgrounds as his own personal amusement park; turn the Memphian movie theater
into a private screening room for himself and his friends; host parties at home
and at local clubs; or schedule late-night appointments with his jeweler. In
short, he made Memphis his nighttime playground.

Billionaire Mogul Has Big Plans For
Graceland.
Robert F.X. Sillerman, the billionaire media mogul who owns a controlling stake

attraction on par with Disneyworld and double the 600,000 visitors who annually
visit the King's former home. Sillerman wants to partner with local government
and business leaders to help make that happen.
"I want to let them know about some exciting things we hope to bring to
Memphis," said Sillerman, who also owns the smash-hit television show "American
Idol. We want to improve the fan experience and attract even more people to
Graceland and we are going to present some ideas that include a refurbishment of
the area, not just relating to Graceland but some scenic improvements to the
area that involve local officials."

What Elvis Needs Is An Opera.
Robert Sandall asks was The King's life too tragic for a musical? Given the
never-ending appeal of all things Elvis - from the music to the memorabilia, and
let's not forget the moon sightings - you would assume that Presley musicals
must be a regular box-office earner. You might also expect that a life as
studded with historic events and immortal tunes as his would have attracted some
of the most illustrious names of musical theatre.
Not so, however. In the 28 years since he died, there have been only two serious
attempts to render the King and his catalogue on stage in Britain. The first,
masterminded by the veteran pop impresario Jack Good at London's New Astoria
theatre, appeared shortly after Elvis's death in 1977 and was aimed squarely at
the grieving fans.
A rather hurried re-telling of the life, with 82 songs attached, Elvis: On Stage
was significant mainly for kickstarting the cult of the impersonators. Reviews
tended to focus on the relative plausibility of Shakin' Stevens and P J Proby as
the young and not-so-young Elvises respectively. The drama, such as it was, was
straight off the CV, and there was little in the way of dialogue. The playwright
Alan Bleasdale headed bang in the opposite direction six years later with Are
You Lonesome Tonight?
Bleasdale's Liverpool Playhouse production took the music as read, and focused
on Presley in his declining years, portraying a reclusive fatso holed up in
Graceland and contrasting this sad grotesque with the lean, mean rock and roller
of the 1950s. It was a well-received and powerful drama that contained a few
excerpts of Presley songs - but it was hardly a musical.
Since then, the boom in stage musicals with pop themes has pretty much passed
Elvis by. The most recent attempt to hitch him to the Mamma Mia! bandwagon was
All Shook Up, an ambitious American farrago that grafted a selection of 24 Elvis
classics, along with the plot of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, on to a love story
set in Sticksville USA in the 1950s. It closed last September after only four
months on Broadway.
There is one clear difficulty with Elvis musicals that shun the All Shook Up
route and take as their subject the man and his music. How do you reconcile the
joyous exuberance of his finest songs with the claustrophobic squalor that took
over his life? Ironically, it was the decision of Presley's manipulative manager
Colonel Parker to sign him up for a string of shoddy film musicals that fenced
him off from his audience, and precipitated his descent into cheeseburger hell.
But just try to find the emotional equivalent of that in the Elvis songbook.
Conveying the ruined grandeur of the poor boy from Mississippi who changed the
world then lost his soul and died on the lav is a tough call for something as
cheerful sounding as "Elvis: The Musical". This guy, you begin to suspect,
requires nothing less than an original operatic score to himself.
In the absence of that, maybe, just maybe, This is Elvis: Viva Las Vegas! has
the answer. This new musical, which is currently touring the country before -
demand permitting - transferring to the West End in the summer, looks closely at
the only remotely happy phase of Elvis's later career. It covers his triumphant
comeback on an NBC TV special in 1968 - in which he appeared clad in black
leather with a 30-inch waist and a guitar - and his subsequent, disastrous
installation as an uber-crooner in the International Hotel in Las Vegas in 1970.
The Vegas contract was the last, and perhaps the most damaging, of the Colonel's
money-driven betrayals of his dependably gullible client. While the paperwork on
the deal was being signed off, Elvis was dreaming of touring the South
performing outdoors with his band on the back of a flatbed truck. The tour never
happened; instead the King was progressively dethroned by stage fright,
prescription drugs and mountainous quantities of junk food.
For the Elvis faithful however, memories are not made of this, and the new
musical knows it. Thirty of the greatest hits, played by an 18-piece band, and a
lead with form - Simon Bowman, whose performance as Elvis in Bleasdale's Are You
Lonesome Tonight? was widely praised - are trying to keep the legend alive
without losing sight of the guy who created it. If it works, it will be a first.
If not, Elvis will have to stay in that limbo to which our collective creative
imagination seems to have banished him: the moon.
'This is Elvis' UK tour dates include the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh (0131 529
6000), Mar 6-11 and the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham (0870 607 7533), Mar
13-18.

Memphis Summers Are So Hot.....

Memphis summers are so hot and humid that the air sticks to human skin like a
glove. It was on such a day in August 1953 that a shy 18-year-old cradling a
battered, beat-up guitar entered the Sun Records office at 706 Union Avenue.
Elvis Presley had passed that way often, walking, driving. Perhaps he had
hesitated once or twice outside, simply to make note of the location. "When he
finally entered," writes Peter Guralnick in Last Train To Memphis (1994), "there
is little question that he stepped through the doorway with the idea, if not of
stardom, at the very least of being discovered."
Since Elvis worked five days a week at a local machinist's shop, he showed up at
Sun Records on a Saturday. It was hot, and there was no air conditioning in the
waiting room. Marion Keisker, the office manager, looked up from her typewriter
to see him approach. "Can I help you?" she asked. She could barely hear his
mumbled reply that he wanted to make a record. Marion told him it would cost
$3.98, plus tax. For another dollar, he could have a taped copy as well. But he
chose the less expensive option.
Marion started up a conversation with the nervous Elvis. He said, "If you know
anyone that needs a singer." And Marion asked, "What kind of singer are you?" He
replied, "I sing all kinds." She said, "Who do you sound like?" To which Elvis
replied, "I don't sound like nobody."
Elvis was ushered into the studio, where it was obvious from the first quivering
notes of the first song he sang that there was something unique about him. When
he finished one song, he embarked upon "That's When Your Heartaches Begin," a
ballad the Ink Spots had originally cut in 1941-and simply declared "That's the
end" at the conclusion of the song. He then looked expectantly at the man in the
control booth. Sam Phillips nodded and said politely that he was an
"interesting" singer. "We might give you a call sometime." Thus began a
relationship that by late 1954 saw Presley emerging as America's greatest pop
icon.
That the rock 'n' roll revolution would be ushered in by Sam Phillips is not all
that surprising. The son of poor tenant farmers, as a child Phillips worked in
the cotton fields of Alabama with black laborers. "A day didn't go by when I
didn't hear black folks singing in the cotton fields," he said. Phillips, thus,
recognized his musical roots and was always savvy to new sounds. He saw in Elvis
what he had been looking for-a white singer who sounded black-and recorded
Presley's first five singles. The first became a hit, a 1954 cover of black
bluesman Arthur Crudup's "That's Alright, Mama." "God only knows that we didn't
know it would have the response that it would have," Phillips said in 1997. "But
I always knew that the rebellion of young people, which is as natural as
breathing, would be a part of that breakthrough."
Phillips began in music as a radio station engineer and later as a disc jockey
at stations in Alabama and Nashville before moving to Memphis. When he began
recording artists, he dealt with many black singers. As more black-oriented
labels began to emerge, however, they sought more control over the recordings
they issued. As a result, Phillips turned to white artists with the motto, "We
Record Anything, Anywhere, Anytime." In the process, he merged white country
music with black rhythm and blues to create a new sound. "What there was a need
for," Phillips would later say, "was a rhythm that had a very pronounced beat, a
joyous sound and a quality that young people could identify with."
Phillips lived up to his motto. After signing Presley to the Sun Records label,
he went on to produce some of the greatest pop recording artists of all time.
These included Jerry Lee Lewis ("Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On"), Carl Perkins
("Blue Suede Shoes") and Johnny Cash ("I Walk the Line"). Phillips also gave a
home to Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Charlie Rich and Howlin' Wolf, among many
others.
Before the 1950s had ended, the tentacles of the Sun Records sound had permeated
virtually every crook and crevice in the western world. Phillips also helped
influence what later became the British Invasion. In fact, it was the joy found
in the early Sun releases that was reflected in the music of The Beatles and
caught the ear of young Robert Zimmerman, later to become Bob Dylan.
A mark of the high regard in which Sun Records was held is reflected in the
number of tribute records about the label-including The Lovin' Spoonful's
"Nashville Cats" in 1971 and John Fogerty's 1985 "Big Train from Memphis." Thus,
it's fitting that Phillips was the first non-performer to be inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. And the Sun Records location was recently
named a national historical site (the first recording studio to be afforded this
honor).
Sam Phillips continued to work up until his death last week at the age of 80 in
Memphis. "I'll never retire. I'm just using up somebody else's oxygen if I
retire," he said in a 2000 interview.
Phillips died knowing he was leaving a huge legacy-one that began in the South,
as fueled by black musicians, and later finding root in the hearts of the youth
in the 1950s. But he never lost sight of the fact that rock 'n' roll originated
and thrived in a frantic atmosphere filled with wild-eyed abandon. "We're all
crazy," Phillips has said of himself and his Sun charges. "But it's a type of
insanity that borders on genius. I really feel that. To be as free as you have
to be for any kind of music, you almost have to be in another dimension. And to
do the broad expanse of rock and roll takes an element of mind expansion that
people less creative would term insanity." Thanks for the insanity, Sam.

THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE BUT MORE OF THE SAME.

A DREAM CONCERT EXPERIENCE IS JUST A DREAM BUT WITH SILLERMANS MILLIONS IT COULD
HAVE BEEN A REALITY!
EPE have announced a "spectacular concert event" to mark the 30th Anniversaryof
Elvis' death. Yes! A spectacular concert event starring Elvis Presley via video,
accompanied live by a large cast of singers and musicians who worked with him.
Hang on, are you sure that the "Spectacular Concert Event" isn't the show
formally known as "Elvis The Concert" which were performed in Memphis in 1997
and 2002?
It has been speculated and discussed by fans around the world for years and
many, including us, were hoping that for the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death,
EPE would have set its sights on making the concert event of the
year.....Anywhere!
Especially when you remember that Bob Sillerman, who's company, CKXE is valued
at over One Billion dollars, now owns Elvis Presley Enterprises and
entertainment company 19 Entertainment, who of course work closely with BMG on
the American Idol show.
A live show produced in the same way as the excellent "Elvis The Concert" but
with some of the worlds major performers singing on stage with the King himself
in a duet along with some of the top musicians backing them up.
The concert would not only sell out in hours but it would be a global event with
sponsors lining up to pay for prime advertising, Television companies would be
battling for the rights to screen such an historic and musically important event
and the following DVD, album and single release would sell tens of millions of
copies around the world.
But with the old management at EPE still firmly in place, innovative and
groundbreaking ideas will not be forthcoming! EPE, you need to Speculate to
accumulate, if you can work with everyone involved and not demand ridiculous
fee's then everyone wins. And you may well help bring in the next generation of
Elvis fans with money ready to spend in your souvenir shops.

Elvis Breaks Through.

Photo:Performing "Heartbreak Hotel" in June 1956.
(BETTMANN/CORBIS)
Fifty years ago today, on February 22, 1956, a song inspired by a suicide note
and sung by a greasy-haired new musical talent entered Billboard's pop music top
ten. The song was "Heartbreak Hotel." The singer, as Life magazine put it, was a
21-year-old "hillbilly who howls." His name was Elvis Presley. The American
music scene would never be the same.
The Presley phenomenon had been gathering steam for months. The scene at a
concert in Jacksonville, Florida, the previous May had given a hint of things to
come. Some 14,000 teenage fans had turned out to hear Elvis. He had casually
said, "I'll see you all backstage, girls." A riot followed after the show, with
thousands of teenagers mobbing their idol.
But by early 1956 Presley's popularity still hadn't spread much beyond the
South. In November he had played at the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in
Port Arthur, Texas, with an audience of 100 people. He continued to perform on
the Louisiana Hayride country-music radio show, a job he had signed up for in
1954 at $18 a shot. He had recorded some classic tunes with Sam Phillips's Sun
Records, but he had yet to score with a hit song.
Two developments had just put the spurs to his career. First, Elvis had
jettisoned his manager and hired Colonel Tom Parker, an ex-circus worker with a
genius for promotion. Parker had taken the cowboy singer Eddy Arnold and made
him a star in the 1940s, complete with movie contract and Las Vegas bookings. He
was hoping to do the same with Elvis.
The second development was that Elvis had signed with a major record label. RCA
Records had bought out his contract from the musically innovative but
financially strapped Phillips. Parker had induced the New York company to gamble
$35,000 on his unproven Memphis crooner.
While Parker adroitly handled the singer's business arrangements, Elvis himself
shaped the music. "Heartbreak Hotel" was a strange choice for his first single
on the new label, but it did reflect his eclectic musical sensibility. The
country musician Tommy Durden had read the previous year about a well-dressed
man who had killed himself and left a note that said, "I walk a lonely street."
Durden talked over the story with Mae Axton, a schoolteacher and publicist for
Parker in north Florida; she suggested erecting "Heartbreak Hotel" at the end of
that street, and the two wrote the song about it in half an hour. Axton offered
Elvis a third of the writing credit if he would record it.
"Heartbreak Hotel" was a moody number with a jazzy tang and a tragic motif.
Record executives questioned whether it would appeal to Elvis's teenage
constituency. It did. The melancholy lyric and plaintive melody, the alteration
between wild shouting and sob-laden crooning-it all exactly captured the Elvis
mystique. His musical judgment was vindicated. "I'm so lonely I could die," he
sang, and the teenagers responded.
Presley was a great fan of the cinematic poses of Marlon Brando and James Dean,
and he dreamed of becoming an actor himself. "Heartbreak Hotel" reflected the
influence of movies like 1955's Rebel Without a Cause, in which Dean brilliantly
acted out teenage angst.
Elvis's emphatic, reverberating rendition of the song, together with Tom
Parker's relentless promotion, made for an unprecedented hit. After the
single reached the charts in February, it soared to number one by the end of
March. It sold a million copies in just eight weeks.
The record turned Presley into a focus of nationwide youth hysteria. The
phenomenon was not entirely new. Frank Sinatra had set off paroxysms among
bobby-soxers in the 1940s, and hordes had gone wild over Rudy Vallee in the
1930s. But no performer had approached Elvis Presley's popularity.
Controversy helped. The bump-and-grind dance steps he worked into his act, along
with the insinuation that dripped from his voice, were "deeply disturbing to
civic leaders, clergymen, some parents," as Life noted. A Miami paper labeled
his performances "obscene." A Jacksonville judge threatened him with jail.
One-night stands and radio could take a performer only so far. In previous
decades it had been Hollywood movies that raised singers to the status of
superstar, and Parker immediately began to negotiate a movie contract for Elvis.
But by the 1950s a new medium was available, and television would become the
engine of the singer's rise. He first appeared on the small screen in January
1956, singing on a show hosted by the swing-era stars Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.
Most of the audience that night tuned in to the more sophisticated Perry Como
Show on another network. But in September, when he made his first appearance on
The Ed Sullivan Show, he drew 82 percent of the television audience-an
incredible 54 million viewers. He had become a national sensation.
His impact was monumental. "Heartbreak Hotel" topped the lists in both pop and
country. He soon had number-one songs in three pop-chart categories
simultaneously. He remained in the top ten continuously for the next seven
years, and he launched the rock-and-roll juggernaut that would establish the
style as the dominant form of popular music for the remainder of the century.
But in 1956 his fans weren't thinking about his place in music history. As one
15-year-old girl declared, "When he does that on TV, I get down on the floor and
scream."

Priscilla Presley to visit Australia next
week.

Priscilla Presley is launching her new signature range of linen in Australia.
The Sydney Morning Herald recently carried the following report: Elvis fans
showed a flicker of excitement last week with news Priscilla Presley is planning
a visit to Australia to launch a signature range of linen.
Of course, it wasn't the upmarket sheets that got fans excited, rather the
prospect of the King's wife being here in the flesh. Insiders say Presley is
heading to Australia a couple of days before the official Sydney launch of her
signature range on February 28.
That means she'll have some time off to relax, which might just include watching
a few shows at Melbourne's upcoming fashion festival. The business relationship
between Presley and Sydney-raised designer Bruno Schiavi - who helped her design
the linen range - is interesting because it shows off Schiavi's strengthening
reputation among international celebrities. Schiavi, who initially found fame
inventing the pocket sock (as you do), developed a strong local reputation
working on signature lines for celebrities such as Delta Goodrem and Mark
Philippoussis before shifting to the US. Fans can see Priscilla at the launch of
her range of New Luxury Bed Linen at Sydney's Myer Store in Pitt Street Mall on
Tuesday 28 February. The launch is at 12.00pm (noon) and there will be an
instore signing of purchased products by Priscilla between 1.30pm and 2.30pm in
the Level 2 Manchester Department.

FTD bought Speedway and Clambake

According to a posting from Ger Rijff on a message board, the guy behind the
Bilko and Fort Baxter labels sold his outtakes of Speedway and Clambake to FTD

John Walker asks if this makes BMG/FTD hypocritical?: actively working with the
bootleg police to shut down these underground operations while at the same time
buying their material.

person behind the labels...
Ger Rijff then posted:
"The old Sergeant visits this mb ? Does he really?! He's such a sweet guy, you

uncle VIK came on the scene 25 years ago with The Loving You Sessions, on vinyl

His aunt did the Pink & Black label, and his cousin played around with the
Laurel label... Then there was his father in law, fooling around with the
Rough Cut Diamonds albums and, if Im not mistaken the releases on the Mystery

ask the Sarge what other labels he and his family were responsible for...

Elvis behind the Scenes.
On April 14 & 15, ElvisMatters launches a new in-depth series about Elvis.

This yearly 'event' aims at fans who wish to know everything about Elvis. Two
conditions for the American invitees: they have to had an undeniable influence
on the life of Elvis - but at the same time, they must have kept a low profile:
no books, no documentaries.
Our first guest is somebody who worked for Elvis in between 1975-1977, being
responsible for his stage and casual wardrobe. More important: he's the one that
introduced Elvis to racquetball.
On top of that, he refused to cooperate with the West brothers for their book
"Elvis - What Happened", and that alone makes him a VIP in our eyes: Dean

PRESTWICK PLAQUE REMOVED.
Val Phillips has informed us that the plaque commemorating ElvisPresley landed
at Prestwick Airport in 1960 is no longer displayed in the airport at the
moment?
Val had emailed the airport to ask where it was sited, as she was planning her
firstvisit to go and see and take photos for her collection. But the reply was
not whatshe expected!
According to an airport spokesperson, "There used to be a plaque in the bar that
was called Graceland's. The bar was recently refurbished by new owners and has a
new identity so at the moment the plaque is not in the terminal building."
The spokesperson goes on to say, "I think our new owners Infratil are waiting
forthe airport to be fully refurbished which we are in the middle of before they
put the plaque back up."
I hope that everyone will keep an eye on this to make sure that the plaque does
get put back up, not forgotten like in Hawaii for the Arizona Memorial.

Elvis Presley - Desert Storm: The Shattering
Of A Myth.

Releasedate March 10,2006.
When Elvis Presley prowled the stage on 2nd September 1974, he could never have
imagined this would become his most infamous performance since he'd last wooed
audiences with his "pelvic gyrations" in the 1950's. He was now a living legend.
He didn't have to prove himself to anyone. Or did he? Why did the King get angry
that night? Darrin Lee has painstakingly disassembled every aspect of the
concert that was to become known as Desert Storm. His detractors said that
Elvis' words were nothing but the mad ramblings of a junkie.
This book uncovers the real, vulnerable Elvis. Elvis wanted to be heard that
night. Now, at last, he has been given a voice. This is truly the shattering of
a myth. This gripping and extensively researched book has it all: The Drugs
Dialogue. The pater-nity suit. Priscilla and Mike Stone. The media allegations.
Sensei Ed Parker and The Karate Dialogue. The author, a lifelong Elvis fan, has
uncovered the facts behind the fabrications and come up with some startling and
suprising conclusions. This is a true story. This is the story of Desert Storm.

New Elvis Photos Found In Graceland Archives.

An envelope of negatives was recently discovered by archivists working at the
Graceland archives. This photo, from one of those negatives, features Elvis as
he waits to complete his paperwork before boarding a bus with twelve other
recruits.
Other photos, all taken on the day Elvis was inducted into the army, on March
24, 1958, feature Elvis having breakfast, signing autographs, and
more.
These photos have probably not been seen since they were given to Vernon
Presley, Elvis's father, and he filed them away many years ago.
Because of the large number of documents, contracts, letters and other
materials, that are in the Graceland collection, there is an ongoing project
to scan and artifact everything in the collection.

Elvis Still Rockin' At Turnpike Lane
Station.
A REWORKING of London's world-renowned Tube map to chart the best of 20th
century music has seen Elvis Presley hip-swing his way into Turnpike Lane
station.
A glut of stars have descended on the classic Tube map, with each line
representing a musical genre, and each station an artist. Funk maestro and
Godfather of Soul James Brown has taken up residence in Finsbury Park, where the
Piccadilly and Victoria Lines (renamed the Blues & Country and Funk Lines)
converge, recognising his transcendence of genres. Also running through Haringey
is the Hip-Hop Line (the Northern Line), which sees
trailblazers Run-DMC occupy Highgate and veteran rapper-turned-actor LL Cool J
take over Archway station.
The map was drawn up by music writer Dorian Lynskey, who said: "The different
character of each line lent itself to a genre. Pop intersects with
everything else so that had to be the Circle line. Classical music occupies its
own sphere - perfect for the Docklands Light Railway."
LU Managing Director, Tim O'Toole said: "The Underground and music are essential
elements in the vitality of London. The Tube and music are
synonymous in many Londoners' minds, through the songs or the memory of travel
to a fondly recalled gig."
The famous Underground map was designed by Harry Beck in 1933. Previous
adaptations of the map include Simon Patterson's The Great Bear designed in 1992
which features philosophers, actors and politicians.

Lisa Marie Presley Married

LOS ANGELES - Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of rock 'n' roll king Elvis Presley, has married guitarist and music producer Michael Lockwood in a ceremony in Kyoto, Japan, her publicist said Thursday. Presley, 38, and Lockwood exchanged vows in a traditional Japanese ceremony on Jan. 22, spokesman Paul Bloch said.
It was Presley's fourth marriage. She was previously married to Nicolas Cage, Michael Jackson and Danny Keough, who is the father of her two children.
The bride's mother, actress Priscilla Presley, walked her daughter down the aisle and gave her away, Bloch said.
Daughter Riley Keough was maid of honor and son Benjamin Keough was a groomsman.
The best man was Presley's first husband Danny Keough.
Also attending the wedding were Lockwood's parents, Vivian and William Lockwood.
Lockwood was Presley's musical director and is listed as executive producer on her 2005 album "Now What."
Presley lives in the Los Angeles area but Bloch said he didn't know where the couple planned to live.

The Elvis Presley Show - Holding Down The
Fort.
Right after " Elvis - A Legendary Performer Volume 8 " the Madison label
will issue a double CD set titled " The Elvis Presley Show - Holding Down
The Fort, " featuring the much-heralded Fort Worth, Texas concert from June
3, 1976. About five years ago Madison issued portions of this show,
unfortunately far from complete and in lesser sound quality. However, this
2006 collection will be taken from a first generation soundboard recording
in superb sound quality. And the packaging will include a 16 page,
illustrated booklet with relevant text. But there's more!
For the first time, this " 30th Anniversary Edition " will feature all the
music from the " pre-show, " with Joe Guercio and the Hot Hilton Horns, J.D.
Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, and The Sweet Inspirations. All these
performances will be as presented that night in Fort Worth. Highlights from
the first CD include " When The Saints Go Marching In " and "You'll Never
Walk Alone" from the Stamps, and the Sweet Inspirations energetic vocals on
" Philadelphia Freedom, " " Lady Marmalade " and a medley of Stevie Wonder
hits. The stand up comedian Jackie Kahane's set was not recorded and will
not appear on this release.
Elvis' concert itself will feature all the tracks previously released on
Madison's Cajun Tornado, but this time in great sound quality from the first
generation soundboard recording and in unbroken running order. Some of the
previously unreleased performances will include " If You Love Me (Let Me
Know), " " Heartbreak Hotel, " " Help Me " and many more. Don't miss the
dynamic 1976 return of The Elvis Presley Show to Cowtown.

Manuel Cuevas instrumental with Elvis'
fashions.
Quite possibly the coolest collection of the week came from a 73-year-old
Country & Western legend. Take that fashion snobs!
I don't listen to country music, but after living in the beautiful state of
Colorado for six years now, I'm embracing Western style. I wear my Frye
boots all the time. I own a pair of cowboy boots. I even bought a pair of
Uggs (OK, not Western, but definitely Colorado). I love my Rockmount shirts.
And, if only I could afford it (up to $4,500 for a ready-to-wear outfit),
I'd be buying up all of Manuel Cuevas's first New York Fashion Week line.
And, then, I'd buy up all the men's line for my husband. The coolest leather
jackets, shearling coats and customized denim are the height of cowboy
couture. Some fast facts on Cuevas, courtesy The Daily: In the 1960s, he was
head tailor for Nudie Cohn, Hollywood's celebrated rodeo clothing designer,
where he made duds for Hank Williams, Roy Rogers, John Wayne and Dolly
Parton. "I've known Dolly since she was in training bras," he says.
When Walk the Line became a hit song, Johnny Cash ordered nine outfits to
take on the road. "I made the outfits, and he called me and said, 'I
received my suits, but how come they're all black?' It just became his thing
for his whole life. We were very close."
Manuel was key in developing Elvis's aesthetic, beginning with the famous
gold lame jacket. "It was the most horrible suit I ever made in my
life...But it turned out to be his most famous look." He also made the 70s
white rhinestone and fringe Vegas jumpsuits.
In 1967, Manuel designed the Beatles' uniforms for the Sgt. Pepper album.
"Those guys were just fun people, great kids, and everybody loved them all
over the world. I could have thrown a sheet on them, and everyone would've
loved it."
Manuel is credited with designing not only the Grateful Dead's skull and
rose logo but also the Rolling Stones tongue. "I made a pillow with the
tongue image on it for Mick's birthday. When I make something for someone, I
find a part of them -- with Mick it was a big mouth and a loose tongue."

I could have thrown a sheet on them, and everyone would've
loved it."

Hill (AKA Sue Silver) died in a fatal car accident on Friday.
Judy was a supporter a well loved person in the Elvis community.
Sue/Judy was a teacher who always showed her kids that she loved Elvis and
we know that she will be terribly missed.
