Bush greets Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi.

http://www.commercialappeal.com/

WASHINGTON - President Bush welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to the White House this morning in an elaborate South Lawn ceremony.

Bush talked of the close ties between the two countries that were at war just over 60 years ago, and thanked Koizumi for his willingness to back him on Iraq and other issues.

But quickly getting to the real purpose of the Japanese leader's state visit, Bush added: "Officially, hefs here to see the President ? but I know the highlight of his visit will be paying his respects to the King," referring to their trip to Graceland on Friday.

Koizumi spoke of his deep friendship with and trust of the President in his remarks.

Two hours later, in a joint press conference in the East Room, the president and Bush both referred repeatedly to the Graceland visit. In his opening remarks, Bush noted that he had given Koizumi an Elvis-themed gift.

The exchange went like this:

Bush: "And, plus, as you all know, it's become quite well-known that we're going to visit Graceland tomorrow. He's an Elvis fan. Laura and I gave him a jukebox as a gift, and I can't -- what was the first song you put on? It wasn't 'Hound Dog,' it was --

Koizumi: "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You."

Bush: "See, he loves Elvis, and I couldn't think of a better way to honor my friend (than) by going to Graceland. But it also sends a signal about how close our relationship is."

Taking his first question from the Associated Press's Terry Hunt, Bush told the reporter he was reminded of "one of Elvis's greatest songs, 'Don't Be Cruel.' So keep that in mind, Hunt, when you ask your question."

After taking some questions, including two from Japanese reporters traveling with him, Koizumi ended the press conference with another Elvisism.

"Thank you very much, American people, for 'Love Me Tender.' "

Elvis' Birthplace - Is It The Real One?

In the latest issue of Sid Shaw's excellent "Elvisly Yours Cyber Newsletter". Folowing on earlier reports that the Presley's Tupelo home is currently sited in an incorrect spot, Sid now questions whether the one-room shack is in fact the real one.

Sid says:

"Doubts are emerging that the shack in Tupelo, described as the birthplace, was never set foot in by Elvis Presley. Over the years I took the "Elvisly Yours Fan Club" tours to Tupelo and heard all sorts of rumours about the authenticity of the birthplace.  I was always impressed with the dignity of Tupelo and the tranquility of the Park they created in Elvis' memory that I just let the matter rest, especially compared to the crass commercialism of Graceland.

However, there are members of Elvis' family now openly stating the shack is not genuine and it is just a replica of the real birthplace, including an aunt who was present at the birth and she is still alive.

Local folklore suggests the shack was moved from the original street in Tupelo and rebuilt at the Park thus making it a tourist attraction and now money-spinner. Apparently, the land on which the Park was built is owned by a wealthy landowner in Tupelo, so it has been very convenient and lucrative for him for the shack to be called the birthplace. It is believed the original house still exists, yet somehow the shack you see in Tupelo has
been allowed to keep the mythology of the birthplace.

There is even a historical marker and I wonder what research was conducted by the Agency that issues such markers? I will be writing to them for an explanation and with our contacts in Tupelo will disclose further information to be published in future Cyber Newsletters. It seems the "Presleys" have not been treated well in that part of the South and there are still many, many of them. In fact, a genealogist in Verona Mississippi claims to have found 1,500 Presleys in the family database".

Elvis Chapel Rises From The Ashes.

The King may be gone, but his legacy lives on at the foot of the Superstition Mountains. The Superstition Mountain Historical Society and Museum in Apache Junction will soon unveil the Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel.

The building was salvaged from Apacheland Movie Ranch, which was almost entirely destroyed in a February 2004 fire. The chapel is a relic of "Charro!" - the legendary performer's brief foray into Western movies. The chapel is scheduled to open in October, and patrons are already lining up. It will cost $300 to rent for a wedding, money that will benefit the historical society. Historical society officials said they've taken calls from Elvis fans who were married at Apacheland and want to renew their vows in the same chapel. They've also received reservation requests from people who want to exchange vows there for the first time.

"Those Elvis fans are really crazy," said George Johnston, president emeritus of the Superstition Mountain Historical Society. "Well, maybe not crazy. More like enthusiastic."

Hank Sheffer, a volunteer who described himself as "one of the local characters," said it was funny to imagine Elvis fans so dedicated that they reserved a building bearing his name before construction actually finished. Once finished, the Elvis Presley Chapel will display artifacts from the Superstition Mountain Museum. The historical society added two storage rooms to hide the exhibits during ceremonies, leaving room for about 60 people. Johnston said one of the project's next steps will be to replace the steeple, which sat beside the chapel in the dust.

Johnston said he doesn't know of any other Elvisthemed chapel in the Valley. He said the historical society recently received an order for 50 of their new Elvis Presley Chapel shirts - from Lagos, Nigeria.

The owners of Apacheland donated the Elvis Presley Chapel and a barn used in the television series "The Rifleman" - the only remnants left by the fire of a property once popular with tourists. Volunteers then dismantled and transported the chapel and barn to the museum, which opened in 2003. Johnston said the origin of the Apacheland fire is just another Superstition Mountain mystery.

"Nobody knows," Johnston said. "But that place was a tinderbox."

The $30,000 budget for the chapel project came from donations of money, building materials and labor. Sheffer said one of the project's major challenges was to convert the chapel from a prop on a movie set into a structure that will house real people, and to do both while maintaining its authenticity. "Problem being the county is insisting that reconstruction go according to code," he said. "All the naysayers wanted to say it isn't the original chapel. "But it is."

New Stage Musical "Walking In Memphis".

HE may be dead, but his spirit is very much alive in the hip-swinging, velvet-voiced Shaky Russell. An Elvis award-winning performer, he has co-devised the show Walking in Memphis (with Duck Chowles of The Barnyard Theatre Productions) which is sure to have audiences "all shook up" in South Africa.

This charismatic singer has wowed audiences both nationally and internationally, and taking Memphis itself by storm was the ultimate accolade. Shaky is one of today's supreme Elvis Presley tribute performers with a style and energy that resonates of the King himself. He doesn't impersonate, nor does he imitate. "What I do is not a 'rip off' but a spectacular tribute. I don't talk to the audiences as Elvis, but about Elvis," says 24-year-old Shaky. His career highlight was visiting Memphis, Tennessee, and being the only South African to have performed at Elvis's home, Graceland. Shaky also had a chance to record at the legendary Sun Studio which was home to many stars including Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and, of course, Elvis himself.

"I was bouncing to the tunes of Elvis before I could walk," quips Shaky and with his very apt name, it seems pre-determined that his life was going to be intertwined with one of the world's greatest musical legends. The Barnyard is now ready to shake, rattle and roll. There is a cross section of tributes to him with the likes of Marc Cohn's "Walking in Memphis", ZZ Top's "Viva Las Vegas", UB40's "Can't Help Falling In Love" and the Fine Young Cannibals' "Suspicious Minds".

In addition to The King's classics such as "Blue Suede Shoes", "Devil In Disguise", "Are You Lonesome Tonight", "Love Me Tender" and "Jailhouse Rock", audiences can expect to hear his recent remix "Little Less Conversation". Paying tribute to The King will be an eleven-piece cast lead by five vocalists. Audience members can bring their own food and buy beverages at the theatre. The doors open at 18:30 and the show starts at 20:00.Walking in Memphis opens on 4 July and the first week includes a special offer of "buy 1 get 1 free". Bookings essential on 083 913 3434 or at the theatre on 021 914 8898 between 9:00 and 17:00.

I was 14 years old and had just gone to Cyprus on holiday for the first time with my Mum. The news broke out on the radio and television. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. I felt like I'd lost a member of my family. I found one Elvis record which I played over and over again. I'd cried for hours. The next day, I called my father and asked him to save every newspaper he could buy. He did. When I got home, I read every article and wept once again. Today, I still have those newspapers. I still love the man and his music, even to the point where I have given my first-born son Elvis' middle name, 'Aaron'.

I was 11 years old when Elvis died. At that time, I spent days in the mountains. I read about his death in a newspaper but no emotions. I actually didn't understand what had happened. Two months later, I watched Fun in Acapulco on our TV. I fell in love with Elvis from the first sight. And . I started crying. We miss Elvis very much here in Poland. 'We' means Polish fans in 'Raised on Rock' fan club.

Graceland's Big DayGraceland has new paint on the fences

freshly trimmed bushes and a cleaning job worthy of heads of state.

"Every little detail will be pristine," said Graceland chief executive officer Jack Soden. "There's the joke that you ought to have a big party at your house at least once a year, because if you've got really important guests coming you go the extra step to make sure everything is perfect."

For Soden, who has greeted 15 million guests in 24 years, "the fact is nobody can remember a day like this one."

President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush are accompanying Japan's No. 1 Elvis fan, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, on a tour of Graceland.

It is the first Graceland tour by a sitting U.S. president. Former president Jimmy Carter, who had left office, visited during his daughter's graduation from Memphis College of Art in 1991. That was on a winter day, a Tuesday, when the mansion was closed, said Graceland spokesman Todd Morgan.

Morgan said Koizumi's visit will include eight rooms in the 15-room mansion with Koizumi seeing what other Elvis fans see. The distinction is that the mansion will be closed to other guests until about 12:30 p.m. while Priscilla Presley and daughter Lisa Marie Presley conduct the tour with Soden and Morgan -- all under the scrutiny of security teams from the White House and the Japanese Embassy.

Morgan could not discuss security, but he said advance teams have been busy for several weeks "doing all of the things you would expect. It feels like we're living in an episode of 'The West Wing.' "

He said Koizumi is not fluent in English and will use a translator regularly used by the White House for meetings with the prime minister. Graceland's pre-recorded audio tour is offered in Japanese, but Morgan said, "It was determined by all parties it would be a much more enjoyable experience to be a conversational tour with no headsets."

Morgan said he is unsure who else might accompany Koizumi, but Soden said the prime minister's brother, Masaya Koizumi, is a likely guest. He said the brother helped organize installation of an Elvis statue in a Tokyo park.

One Japanese newspaper correspondent offered to coach Soden on appropriate Japanese phrases to use in greeting Koizumi, but Soden declined the offer. "With my luck, I would think I had it down, then screw it up," he said.

Morgan said it is traditional to offer gifts to visiting dignitaries. Graceland, one of the nation's busiest licensing agents, has hundreds of options from key chains and Teddy bears to leather jackets and a jukebox. Morgan said Graceland staff members were still debating Thursday what to present the Bushes and Koizumi. "If we told ahead of time it wouldn't be a surprise," he said, declining to be more specific about gifts being considered.

As for the tour itself, Morgan said it will include the living room, music room, dining room, the Vernon and Gladys Presley bedroom, the kitchen, the pool room, the TV room, and the infamous Jungle Room. It will not include the upstairs which has the Elvis bedroom, a study, a "wardrobe room" and Lisa Marie Presley's nursery.

Beyond the house, the tour includes trophy and racquetball buildings, Vernon Presley's office and smaller exhibit areas. Those exterior buildings include Elvis' gold records and jumpsuits.

Regular tourists will be delayed by the prime minister's tour with tours of Graceland resuming at 12:30 p.m. The Elvis car museum in the Graceland Plaza shopping complex is being used as a national media center with public tours resuming there at 2 p.m. All other attractions will be open all day as usual.

Morgan said the visit is "a very big day for us, not just professionally but personally. It's really special. Elvis has such universal appeal. These people go everywhere and meet everybody.

"They lead fascinating lives, but it doesn't matter where they're from or what walk of life they're from, they still appreciate Elvis."

Elvis souvenirs for Japanese prime minister.

Fans of Elvis are already lining up to present Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi with memorabilia during his visit to Memphis, including locks of the king of rock 'n' roll's jet-black hair. Tom Morgan Jr., a retired sheriff's deputy who handled security for Presley's funeral in 1977, said he's willing to hand over several locks of hair from a baseball-sized stash that the singer's barber (Homer Gillard) gave him. The prime minister and the Bushes will have lunch at the Rendez-Vous, Memphis' most famous barbecue restaurant.

Christopher  Lee appreciating the talents of Elvis Presley.

"Veteran actor CHRISTOPHER LEE has never heard a ROLLING STONES song, because he doesn't think he'll like them.

However, the 84-year-old's lack of enthusiasm for popular music hasn't stopped him from appreciating the talents of ELVIS PRESLEY and soul singer LIONEL RICHIE.

He says, "I've only once in my life been to a disco, and I left after about ten minutes.

"I think I may have heard THE BEATLES - on the radio, without realising who there were. But I have never heard The Rolling Stones.

They don't seem the kind of music I would like, so why bother?

"But I'll tell you one thing: Elvis was a damn good singer - he didn't just gyrate. And I saw LIONEL RICHIE give a very clever performance in Geneva a couple of years ago. He was absolutely brilliant."

Tupelo Tourism Officials Invite Koizumi To Elvis Birthplace.

Tourism officials here await word on whether Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will visit Elvis Presley's birthplace after he tours the rock legend's Graceland estate in Memphis.

Tupelo's Convention and Visitors Bureau issued the invitation to Koizumi, who like many people in Japan, is a big fan of the late rock 'n' roll star. Tourism officials said the proposed visit to the northeast Mississippi city would follow Koizumi's June 30 trip to Memphis with President Bush.

An appearance by the Japanese prime minister would be a big boost for international tourism promotion in Tupelo, local officials acknowledged.

"What we'd like to see from this is more Japanese visitors. That's the whole purpose of it," said CVB executive director Linda Butler Johnson, who says Japan is one of the best-represented countries in foreign visitors to Presley's birthplace.

The Elvis Presley Fan Club in Japan claims to be the largest in Asia with a 5,000-strong membership. Another 2,000 people or so belong to the recently formed Elvis Presley Society in Japan, said society president - and occasional Elvis impersonator - Tomikazu Taguchi. The even newer C'mon Elvis Fans in Japan is on a much smaller scale, with a membership in the dozens.

The invitation originally went to both Koizumi and Bush, but Bush's schedule won't allow a side trip, said Craig Ray, Mississippi Development Authority director of tourism.

Ray, who worked at the White House under the current president and his
father George H.W. Bush, speculated that Koizumi might have more free time.

"We have a really good shot at the prime minister coming to Tupelo," said Ray, who forwarded Butler Johnson's invitation for Koizumi to the Japanese Embassy.

Organizers said the prime minister's visit could include a trip to the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum and a tour of popular Elvis sites like Tupelo Hardware, where Presley purchased his first guitar, and Johnnie's Drive In, where he used to hang out.

Presley was born in Tupelo but moved with his parents in 1948 to Memphis, Tennessee, where he later began his recording career. Presley died in Memphis on Aug. 16, 1977.

Small Memphis Museum Buys Elvis Presley's Favourite Roller Coaster.

The owners of a small museum wanted a piece of Elvis Presley's favourite amusement park ride but ended up instead with the whole thing - a roller coaster called the Zippin Pippin.

The Pippin was bought by the city's park commission in 1947. Most of the superstructure for its 850 metres of track was replaced over the years but it's still billed as one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the country. The ride was a top attraction at Libertyland, a 30-year-old amusement park Presley often rented for private parties.

Libertyland is closing and its rides and concession stands were sold at auction Wednesday.

Robert Reynolds and Stephen Shutts, partners in a travelling museum called the Honky Tonk Hall of Fame & Rock-N-Roll Roadshow, showed up planning to bid on one of the roller coaster cars.

Instead, they bought the whole Pippin for $2,500 US. It went cheap because the sale agreement gives the buyer a month to take it down and haul it away.

Reynolds said he had not yet decided what they will do with the Pippin.

"There's 30 days to figure it out. . . . The car is all we needed," he said.

What Kind Of Car Would Elvis Drive?

Photo:1977 Cadillac Seville

When a shy young man named Elvis Aaron Presley escaped the poverty of northeastern Mississippi's hill country, and gyrated onto the music scene in the mid-1950s, he was part of a revolution in music and in culture. His "rock-a-billy," a unique blend of black blues, gospel and country music went mainstream, a revelation to youth in a soon to be unsegregated South. It epitomized a changing society.  Elvis' 1977 Cadillac Seville

With the Depression a bad memory and the Second World War over, it was an optimistic time, and no one was more optimistic than General Motors. It bestrode the industry like a colossus, selling every second car in America and Canada.

And standing atop its automotive hierarchy was the undisputed pinnacle of automobile luxury: Cadillac, the King of Cars and symbol of success. It is only fitting then that Elvis, "The King", would aspire to a Cadillac to tell the world that this poor Mississippi boy had arrived. And tell it he did. Over the years he owned more than 100 Cadillacs, including sedans, convertibles and coupes, from his first 1954 model to a 1977 Seville.

If Elvis were here today what would he drive? No doubt it would be a Cadillac, likely an XLR-V, Cadillac's range-topping, high performance, hardtop convertible. It would appeal to his patriotism because it, and the CTS and others, exemplifies GM's and Cadillac's resurgence.

Elvis liked flash and style, and none has it more than the low-slung, high powered XLR-V. From its polished wire-mesh grille to its sterling silver finished wheels, it would have said Elvis. And he would have loved it.

Elvis fans relive their memories each year at Collingwood's Elvis Festival.

This year's the festival will be held from July 26 to 30. The Elvis Festival in Downtown Collingwood has become the largest festival of its kind world-wide.

Tens of thousands of visitors from across North America make the trip to Collingwood to enjoy a weekend of music and the popular Saturday morning Elvis Classic Car Parade. For more information, phone 1-877-446-0824.

Davy Jones Has Lunched An Atack On Dead Rockers.

MONKEES frontman DAVY JONES has launched an astonishing attack on dead rockers KURT COBAIN, JIMI HENDRIX, ELVIS PRESLEY and JANIS JOPLIN, questioning why society worships people who wasted their lives.

The 61-year-old I'M A BELIEVER singer insists they wouldn't have been idolised if they were still alive.

Jones says, "I don't have a lot of respect for people like Jimi Hendrix, or Kurt Cobain, or Janis Joplin or Elvis Presley, because they all killed themselves in one way or another.

"Although I often wonder what they'd be doing now if they were still alive.Would they be these crumbling lookalikes of the same people, greeting people at the entrance of Caesar's Palace?"

WAS ELVIS GAY?

According to this author of his book ", David Bret, "Elvis: The Hollywood Years;

Elvis was Gay!!!

David Bret writes in his book:

Elvis' Manager Tom Parker "held secret information about a homosexual affair between Elvis and actor Nick Adams over his head like a sword.

He made it clear that ... if Elvis didn't toe the line, he'd let it get out.

At that time, it could well have ruined his career. That is why Parker had so much control over him."  The same happened for this reason that Elvis was forbidden to record any new songs from the duo songwriters Leiber and Stoller.

Tupelo Invites Japanese Leader To Elvis' Birthplace.

Tourism leaders here have asked one of the world's biggest Elvis fans to visit the King's birthplace after a stop by Graceland next week. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi received an invitation from the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau to tour Elvis' hometown after his June 30 trip to Memphis with President George Bush. Tupelo officials are still waiting for word on Koizumi's intentions, but if the die-hard Elvis fan comes, his visit will be a big boost for international tourism promotion here.

"What we'd like to see from this is more Japanese visitors. That's the whole purpose of it," said CVB executive director Linda Butler Johnson, who termed Japan one of the best-represented countries in foreign visitors to the rock n' roll icon's birthplace.

Johnson originally sent an invitation to both Koizumi and Bush, but Bush's schedule won't allow a side trip, said Craig Ray, Mississippi Development Authority director of tourism. A White House spokesman was still trying to confirm that by Thursday evening. Ray, who worked at the White House under the current president and his father George H.W. Bush, speculated that Koizumi might have more free time.

"We have a really good shot at the prime minister coming to Tupelo," said Ray, who forwarded Butler Johnson's invitation for Koizumi to the Japanese Embassy.

The prime minister's visit would include a trip to the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum and a tour of popular Elvis sites like Tupelo Hardware, where the King purchased his first guitar, and Johnnie's Drive In, where he used to hang out. Regardless of either man's ability to see Tupelo, the CVB prepared gift baskets for Bush and Koizumi that Butler Johnson took to Graceland on Wednesday. Baskets include gifts like mugs, T-shirts, posters and notebooks donated by the birthplace and museum, the Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association and the CVB. Koizumi, who shares a Jan. 8 birthday with Elvis, requested the chance to see Graceland during his June 28-30 visit to the United States.

Elvis Statuue Back In Vegas.

Elvis Presley's life-size bronze statue, which stood in the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel lobby for oh, so many years, is back in public view. First dedicated in 1978, the somewhat ungainly pose of Elvis, guitar slung over his shoulder and holding a microphone in his left hand, was re-dedicated June 21.

But it wasn't inside the hotel. This time, Elvis the Pelvis has been kicked outdoors to a garden area, standing atop a pedestal with embedded spotlights.

A new bronze plaque at the rock 'n' roll idol's feet reads:

ELVIS: "THE KING" OF LAS VEGAS An eight-year exclusive run in the Las Vegas Hilton Showroom 837 consecutive sold-out performances entertained some 2.5 million people enough to fill the Rose Bowl 25 times over! LAS VEGAS' ALL-TIME FAVORITE, AND SUCCESSFUL PERFORMER

Elvis Presley's Las Vegas connection was given a boost by his 1964 film "Viva Las Vegas!" opposite Ann-Margret, who drove him wild before Elvis could drive his racing car in the first Las Vegas Grand Prix.

'Yakety Sax' man swings through

June 22, 2006 I took sax from different styles, and venues asked me to learn to play a little different, a little more commercial. Everything in Boots Randolph's life has come in cycles.

At 13, the budding musician vowed to escape farm living. At 79, the acclaimed saxophonist loves his 150-acre spread outside Nashville.

In the 1940s and '50s, Randolph played every nightclub and dinner theater he could hustle. More than two decades later, he owned his own Nashville nightclub, opening doors to other climbing stars.

Through the '60s, Randolph was a sought-after session player, adding sax to albums for Connie Francis, Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley. Later this month, he'll release 'Candy,' an album of standards that he's never recorded before.

'I think probably everything averages out and goes together to make the world I'm in and the work I do,' Randolph said. 'Fortunately, I'm playing and doing the things I'd like to do even if I didn't get paid.'

Randolph will make his Northland debut at 7:30 p.m. Saturday as he opens the season for the Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center in Solon Springs.

ROCK JUST STARTING

Randolph's first love was jazz and big band music. He picked up the saxophone at 16 and honed his skills with the U.S. Army Band in the mid-'40s. When he started gigging in clubs, he recalls rock 'n' roll was just starting and country wasn't mainstream so he became a part of the scene that helped rockabilly evolve and created the pop-country amalgam called the Nashville sound.

'The word jazz, it wasn't a dirty word, but it wasn't something you wanted to be associated with because jazz players didn't make a lot of money,' Randolph said. 'I took sax from different styles, and venues asked me to learn to play a little different, a little more commercial.'

Randolph is best known for his first album, 'Yakety Sax,' released in 1963. He's one of those musicians whom many people have heard but don't realize it's him. After making a name for himself on the club circuit, Randolph became a regular in Nashville studios, averaging more than 200 sessions a year in the 1960s.

Randolph played on 'This Is...Brenda,' an album by then 16-year-old sensation Brenda Lee. 'It was scary that such a little girl could sing that good,' he remembered.

PLAYED WITH THE KING

Randolph performed on Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Woman' and Elvis Presley's 1960 album, 'Elvis Is Back.' He also performed on eight of Presley's movies.

'It was eerie to walk into the studio with someone like Elvis. You knew something was there, that he had some kind of spirit,' Randolph said.

And Randolph even played on R.E.O. Speedwagon's 1972 album, 'R.E.O. 2.'

'By having the experiences that I had playing all types of music, I was able to adjust to those (artists') different styles pretty easily,' the sax man said. 'And I used a touch of jazz in everything I played.'

Regardless of his success in studio, the club scene was the most fulfilling for Randolph, he said. It spurred him to open his namesake restaurant and nightclub in Nashville in 1977. In the '70s and '80s, Nashville was booming and Randolph was able to ride the tide of an ever-growing music scene that didn't have enough clubs to accommodate all the acts. He said he drew 200 people a night, serving supper along with a concert by his 10-piece band and guest musicians.

Randolph sold the club in 1994 to retire and spend more time with his family on his Nashville farm.

'I miss it a lot. I miss it a lot. I spent a lot of years in those nightclubs. It was not a hard job for me. It was the most rewarding, financially as well as performing,' he said.

Randolph still performs 30-40 shows a year, mostly music festivals and fairs throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. He said his latest album, 'Candy,' features one of his best solos ever along with tunes such as 'I'll Be Seeing You' and 'Cry Me A River.'

While most of his audience remembers the first versions of these tunes, Randolph thinks his music still reaches younger music fans.

'I get to the kids of that audience and even some of them grandkids because mom and dad don't like what the kids like today,' Randolph said. 'A lot of times the younger folk will come around and they we say, 'We like your kind of music. We never heard it before.' I guess I'm one of the few people keeping my nose to the grindstone preserving it.'

Elvis Zippin Pippin sold for $2,500.

On the news at 5 yesterday on WPTY:

The Zippin Pippin, the most prominent and historic ride at Libertyland, sold for $2,500 today at public auction.

The historic roller coaster, reportedly Elvis Presley's favorite ride, had been in operation since 1923. It was among an estimated 100 items Mid-South Fair officials put up for auction Wednesday as they prepare to close the park and sell off the assets to recoup losses.

Topping the money list was the Kamikazi, which sold for $190,000, followed by the Rebellion at $155,000. The park's other roller coaster, the Revolution, sold for $55,000.

About 75 people paid the $10 fee to take part in the auction that started around 10:30 a.m. and wrapped up shortly after 3 p.m.

The auction was conducted by Norton Auctioneers of Coldwater, Mich., which specializes in the auction and appraisal of amusement parks, carnivals, Halloween attractions, zoos, water parks and other tourist attractions.

Fair and auction officials had estimated that the sale could bring in as much as $1 million. Billy Orr, president and CEO of the Mid-South Fair, said after the auction they expected the sales total to be close to that figure.

A final tally was not expected until Thursday.

Those buying the items have 30 days to remove them from the park, Orr said.

Elvis was gay claim resurfaces.

JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS is convinced ELVIS PRESLEY was homosexual - as he is suspicious of his glitzy wardrobe and maternal attachment. The Irish actor, who played the title role in 2005 TV film ELVIS, has branded the HEARTBREAK HOTEL rocker "the gayest f**king thing on two legs" after time spent researching the star yielded truly camp results. He says, "Anyone who lives with their mama that long and dresses up in that much spangly gold with black lacquer on their eyes has definitely got something going on." Angry fans can write to Rhys-Meyers: Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Buttevant, County Cork, Ireland.

Hotel Chisca Faces Possible Demolition.

Toward the end of the public tour visitors get to take of Sun Studio, the tour guide punches a button on a large piece of recording equipment, sending the wound-up voice of deejay Dewey Phillips howling through the speakers. It's an old broadcast of his once popular "Red Hot and Blue" radio program on WHBQ, broadcast in the 1950s from the mezzanine level of the Hotel Chisca in Downtown Memphis. If newly filed real estate development plans are to be believed, the recording may soon be one of the few remaining mementos of the historic hotel, which was built in 1913 and once served as the headquarters of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC).

A development partnership - Area Hotels LLC - has submitted a set of plans to Memphis and Shelby County planners showing a four-story Hilton Garden Inn being built at the southwest corner of Second Street and Linden Avenue. The eight-story-tall Chisca sits to the east of that land at 272 South Main St. Blowing in the wind But it's unclear, based on the documents, what the hotel development now means for the Chisca, which preservationists once were confident could be preserved and renovated. David Pear, a consultant with the Memphis firm Pinkowski & Co., has worked in recent months with the project's developers, and said the plan originally was to save the hotel. But the cost became prohibitive to update it for use as a new hotel structure, he said. "And I think the plan was then to tear it down," Pear said. That's what current drawings, which city-county planners are now reviewing, also suggest could be on the way. "As you look at their drawing, you see that they're talking about moving an alley, and the way that they show that alley looks to me like it has to go through the Chisca - although that's not what's directly in front of us right now to review," said planner Don Jones. "So there's some things about their drawing that make you scratch your head and say, 'Now wait a minute, how does that affect the Chisca?'"

Hotel Chisca
Where? 272 South Main St.
When? Built in 1913
History;

Besides the Elvis connection, the Chisca was donated to the Church of God in Christ for $10 in the 1970s. COGIC bought other properties Downtown during that time with the idea of creating something called the Saint Center, a cultural complex for the black Pentecostal denomination's faithful. But plans for it ultimately fell through. The Chisca served as COGIC's headquarters from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. The group left the hotel around that time because of maintenance expenses, moving to the Mason Temple at 930 Mason St. Downtown, where it has been ever since. Beat to the chase  Last year, COGIC announced a splashy $80 million redevelopment for the four-block hotel site, a plan that included a new 110-unit Hilton Homewood Suites and the redevelopment of the Chisca into a 150-room Hilton Garden Inn. The idea for the Hilton Homewood Suites apparently has been scrapped, as the application currently in the site review process only includes the Hilton Garden Inn. Jim Schumpert, who works in the landscape architecture and planning department of The Reaves Firm, said COGIC has put together other partnerships in the past to develop the hotel project, but none panned out. And the current developer, Schumpert said, is passionate about making something happen. "I think the developer wanted to keep this kind of quiet until he made a formal announcement of it, but it is public record at this point," said Schumpert, whose firm is working on the project's site plan. "And he's very adamant about this. He's not blowing smoke. He will develop the project, one way or another here."

Schumpert said the developer will be re-submitting a set of plans to city-county officials soon, once they've been fine-tuned. And in the new version, he added, the Chisca won't be touched. "The problem is there's a lot of opposition to tearing down the Chisca hotel," he said. "But what a lot of people don't realize is that it is prohibitively expensive to refurbish, despite what people will tell you. So our new plan is just to leave the hotel alone." Vacant - and vast But the significance of that is unclear. It's long been understood that the impetus for the project was to shore up the neglected Chisca and the land surrounding it. In essence, a new Hilton hotel would stand next to the still forlorn historic building. In addition to once serving as COGIC's headquarters, perhaps the Chisca's biggest claim to fame is it's where Elvis Presley's landmark record, "That's All Right(Mama)," first was broadcast in July 1954. Phillips gave the record a test spin a few days after Elvis recorded it at Sun Studio and ended up playing it several times back-to-back on his show that night.

Phillips, still remembered by some Memphians by his nickname as "Daddy-O-Dewey," also conducted Elvis' first radio interview on his show at the hotel. The Chisca is the place where it all happened, where the frenetic deejay spun rock and blues records and uttered catch phrases - still famous today - like: "Get yourself a wheelbarrow load of mad hogs, run 'em through the front door, and tell 'em Phillips sent ya." "Tearing down the Chisca would be an affront to Memphis' music history, to the memory of Dewey Phillips and to Elvis Presley," said Mike McCarthy, who works at Sun Studio. "The problem is that people eventually left Downtown - it doesn't mean the buildings are inferior." Diane Gordon, a spokesperson for the South Main Arts District, said the Chisca isn't beyond salvaging. The property has a balance of more than $190,000 in taxes and other charges due, according to City of Memphis records. No meetings have been scheduled yet with any city boards - the Memphis City Council and the Memphis Landmarks Commission, for example - that would have to weigh in on any demolition plans.

No upstairs peek for the Pres & Japanese PM.

Photo : Pres & Japanese PM September 25, 2001

The prime minister can even warble another rendition of "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," as he did at a birthday party for Bush last year.

But there are some things even presidents and prime ministers can't do at Graceland. When the two leaders and first lady Laura Bush visit Elvis Presley's home June 30, the legendary singer's private bedroom and the adjoining bath where he collapsed and died in 1977 will remain off-limits.

The Memphis trip is a farewell gift from Bush to Koizumi, a big-time Elvis fan who will be leaving office in September.

For the most part, Koizumi (pictured opposite) and the Bushes will see the same Graceland other visitors see: the shag carpets and ceramic monkeys of the Jungle Room, which Elvis famously furnished with a 30-minute shopping spree; the glossy black baby grand piano near the living room's white, 4.5-meter sofa; and hundreds of gold records, jumpsuits and guitars in Graceland's museums.

Graceland opened in 1982. Each year more than 600,000 tourists tromp through its first floor and basement playrooms, and visit Presley's grave beside the swimming pool. But the home's upstairs is closed to the public.
The tour won't be completely standard fare, however. It will be led by Presley's only child and heir, daughter Lisa Marie, and her mother, Priscilla. Lisa Marie Presley turned over management of Graceland and sold the rights to her father's name and image last year to CKX Inc., an entertainment company that also owns the "American Idol" TV show. Graceland's new bosses won't be around for the president's visit because "they didn't want to get in the way," Soden said.
"This is not a photo op for the prime minister," he said. "This is truly a heartfelt desire to tour Graceland, and the president and the first lady want the prime minister to have that experience."

Bush and Koizumi are the first sitting heads of state to visit Graceland, but Soden's staff is accustomed to dealing with high-profile visitors. "We're always ready for visitors great and small," Soden said. "Every hour of every day we're fulfilling somebody's dream. They dream of coming and seeing Graceland and this is their moment. And that's true for the prime minister."

Presley has been one of Japan's most popular American entertainers since the 1950s and more than 2,000 Japanese tourists visited Graceland last year. The Elvis Presley Fan Club of Tokyo boasts more than 3,000 members, and The Elvis Presley Society of Japan lists 2,000. Four years ago, Japanese fans quickly bought all 200,000 copies of a limited-edition Elvis CD featuring 25 songs selected by Koizumi.

Geoff Hurst the only man to score a hat trick in a world Cup final, had this to say ....

Amongst several questions thrown at him, about football, etc, the reporter asked him the following:

If you invited three people, alive or dead, to a dinner party who would they be and why?

The first two would be Alf Ramsey and the late Sir Bobby Moore, who were both huge influences on my life from a professional point of view. Alf picked me when perhaps other England managers may not have picked a Geoff Hurst. Sir Bobby was a great pleasure to play alongside for 15 years for both West Ham and England. The third would be Elvis: my wife is a huge fan of Elvis and I'd have loved to have shared a conversation with him and recounted the story to her. The first record I bought for my wife was "GI Blues".

KD Lang And Elvis

kd Lang and Elvis: Canadian songstress k.d lang has just released her retrospective album 'Reintarnation' a best-of anthology of her independent country songs. With a look and even the quiff of Elvis, along with a voice like Roy Orbison's, k.d. lang has always carried a similar emotional musical theme throughout her career.

The cover of her new album is yet another hommage to Elvis' first LP. When asked about the cover kd said, "I just liked the idea of taking Elvis' album cover, along with The Clash's seminal 'London Calling', as I always used to get compared to Sid Vicious and Elvis Presley when I was doing country. And so I just thought that that was a tip of the hat to the people who used to call me a 'CowPunk.' It sort of goes back to the combination of Rockabilly and Punk."

In the past k.d Lang has commented on Elvis saying, "He had total love in his eyes when he performed. He was the total androgenous beauty. I would practice Elvis in front of the mirror when I was twelve or thirteen years old."

In 1979 The Clash also noted the power of Elvis on the cover of their ground breaking album 'London Calling' (above).

Audubon Drive sale spin-off news.

FEDERAL BANKRUPTCY COURT has issued a continuance in the 26 June re-hearing of the bankruptcy case approved last February by Mike Freeman and Cindy Hazen. New hearing will be 9.30 a.m. 10 July.

Freeman and Hazen filed bankruptcy listing $43,000 to creditors.  At the time, they were listing the house's value at about $200,000.  When it sold (twice) for over $900,000, the Court was asking why the house was not listed at the higher price and why could not the creditors been paid their $43,000 out of that.

Once those figures became known, all kinds of people have been asking:  "WHY even file bankruptcy when, even at $200,000, the $43,000 could easily have been paid off?" ALSO, our legal people cannot find a divorce on record in Shelby County; though they are saying they are divorced.

Meanwhile, Uri Geller, whose $905,000 bid thru eBay was first accepted, then rejected in favor of Curb's reported $1 million bid, seems bent on staying in the fight for the long run. Both Geller and Curb have DEEP Pocket$ ... so, barring an out of court settlement (which some say will never happen), this sale could be in the courts for a long, long time.

Sillerman after Riviera Hotel - Elvis back in Vegas??

Elvis World's Bill Burk tells he received the following news from a contact in the know: THIS JUST IN from my source in Las Vegas, who has a strong inside informant.

He says that as of yesterday, Bob Sillerman, new owner of EPE, is still "very much in the hunt" to buy the Riviera Hotel on Vegas' Strip as part of his planned Elvis presence which, we have been told, would still be "a couple of years away" if it were started on today.

BUT, BOOK IT --- Elvis will return to Vegas!

Elvis Tops Forbes List Again.

Elvis Presley, Albert Einstein, Kurt Cobain, Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe continue to earn enviable incomes from the grave, according to Forbes magazine. Presley, who died in 1977, raked in an estimated $52 million last year.

Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, generated about $50 million. Most of that came when his widow,  Courtney Love, sold 25 percent of Nirvana's song catalog in April. Einstein, who has been dead for more than 50 years, took in about $20 million in 2005, Forbes estimates.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem controls the famed thinker's estate and collects $5 million a year from the use of his images. The university also earns royalties from Disney's line of Baby Einstein toys and videos, Forbes reports, which generated $400 million in sales last year. Warhol died in 1987.

Still, he earned $16 million last year through the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, which owns his estate. Monroe, who died in 1962, generated $8 million in 2005.

FedEx Forum Confirmed For "Elvis: The 30th Anniversary Concert" .

Elvis Presley Enterprises is excited to share with you that FedEx Forum is now confirmed as the venue for Elvis: The 30th Anniversary Concert, to be presented on August 16, 2007 as part of Elvis Week 2007 in Memphis, Tennessee.  By policy of FedEx Forum we had to wait until our contract with them was finalized before announcing the location.  That involved process wrapped up within the last 24 hours.

Production-wise the concert, as previously announced, will be something on the scale of our major concert presentations for the 20th Anniversary in 1997 (Mid-South Coliseum) and the 25th Anniversary in 2002 (The Pyramid).  Once again we will bring together a large cast of Elvis's former bandmates playing live on stage with Elvis Presley, via video, starring in the show. Another truly historic and unforgettable event.

Signed so far are Joe Guercio (musical director & conductor) and the TCB Band:  James Burton (lead guitar), Glen D. Hardin (piano), Jerry Scheff (bass guitar) and Ronnie Tutt (drums).  Many other Elvis bandmates are already "holding the date" and each will be announced as their commitments to the show firm up over the course of the weeks and months ahead.

Tickets are expected to go on sale sometime in the third or fourth quarter of this year.  The on-sale date will be announced well in advance to give fans time to prepare.

Elvis - The Sound Of Vegas Volume 1

The S&R records label announced its 5th CD release scheduled in early July and titled "The Sound Of Vegas Vol. 1". It will feature previously unreleased audience recording of Elvis concert in Las Vegas, August 08, 1973 Dinner show. SR label is dedicated mostly to the releasing of early seventies Elvis' performances, but the producers decided to give the life to a parallel project called the "Sound Of Vegas", related to the 1973 - 1974 years when Elvis' rock'n'roll attitude started to disappear and his live act was transformed to a solid, professional performance closer to the musical feeling of other Las Vegas entertainers.

This first one - an early August 1973 concert - is taken from an excellent quality audience recorded tape and the show last about 60 minutes. It is a great performance with Elvis in good mood and strong voice. The highlights of the concert are gospel "How Great Thou Art" and Elvis' "personal" number "My Boy" but all the repertoire is well performed without weak moments. The CD contains a deluxe 8-page full color booklet with many rare photos taken in Las Vegas in August-September 1973. The sound was professionally restored for the best possible listening pleasure.

Track listing :

2001 Theme /  See See Rider / I Got A Woman / Love Me / Steamroller Blues / You Gave Me A Mountain / Trouble / Blue Suede Shoes / Rock Medley / Love Me Tender / Hound Dog / Fever / Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel / What Now My Love / Suspicious Minds / Band Introduction / My Boy / I Can't Stop Loving You / An American Trilogy / How Great Thou Art / Release Me / Can't Help Falling In Love / Closing Riff.

Elvis and Juliet Stage Play Review.

FRED Willard has long proved he's funny in both films ("Best in Show") and television ("Fernwood 2Nite"). With "Elvis and Juliet," a purported comedy written by his wife, Mary, he proves himself a loyal husband, as well - going way beyond the demands of any marriage vows.

Willard plays Arthur Julius Lesley, a successful Elvis impersonator who wants his son, Elvis Aaron (Haskell King), to follow in his footsteps. Elvis, who's in love with his refined Yale classmate, Juliet (Lori Gardner), would prefer to be an economist.

The resulting culture clash is less funny than you think. Elvis' side - they live in Vegas, natch - boasts an astrology- obsessed mother (Pamela Paul), a trashy sister (Bridget Clark) who dresses in the style of '80s-era Madonna, and a lounge-lizard uncle (David Rasche, TV's "Sledge Hammer" who performs as both Frank and Dean in a Rat Pack tribute show. Not surprisingly, their visit to New Haven, Connecticut, to meet Juliet's conservative parents (Warren Kelly and Carole Monferdini), the sort who have a portrait of Thomas Hardy on the wall, doesn't go well, though their teenage son (Justin Schultz) woos the Madonna clone with an impromptu rap performance.

Lacking any genuine wit, the show sputters along in sub-sitcom style for nearly two hours. Willard delivers a surprisingly subdued performance that, with the exception of the sequined jumpsuit he wears in the second act, doesn't even reflect his character's obsession. Only Rasche, delivering his smarmy dialogue with a hammy comic assurance, seems to be having any fun.

Fortunate Son: The Life of Elvis Presley

By Charles Ponce de Leon 256 Pages, hard Cover.

Release date July 25,2006, by  Hill And Wang.
(ISBN: 080903042X)

Sypnonis:

"Days before his death, Elvis Presley saw a chance to earn the U.S. Marshal's badge President Nixon had given him in the Oval Office back in 1970, where, in his bejeweled leisure suit, the drug-addicted Elvis had sworn himself to law and order. Spying a fight breaking out between two men and a gas station attendant, an overweight Elvis did his best to leap out of his limo and strike a karate pose. He was met with stunned disbelief and requests for autographs; when his police escort finally arrived, it was in hopes of a photo with the King.

In the 1950s Elvis was celebrity's perfect storm. Gifted, charismatic, and telegenic, he was a rebel rooted in conservative Southern working-class morals. By the late 1960s, the storm had largely passed. A surging popular culture had upended those morals, and what had once seemed rebellious looked more and more reactionary. Far from daring and racy, Elvis's moves seemed treacle; rather than trendsetting, his musical talent seemed grist for country ballads. Charles Ponce de Leon's brilliant Fortunate Son succinctly places Elvis's life within the larger shifts that redefined the cultural landscape during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, discovering in the mounting ironies of Elvis's waning success the seeds of the mythology we live with today."

Elvis Inspired Tom Jones To Sing.

Sir Tom Jones has revealed Elvis Presley inspired him to become a singer. The veteran star, who shot to fame in the 60s with his hit 'It's Not Unusual' says watching 'The King' as a youngster made him realise what it took to become a star. Tom, who is adored by legions of female fans, insists Elvis taught him that sex appeal was just as important as talent.

Elvis In Top 10 Celebrity Ghost List.

According to The Hollywood News Web site - which sounds very official and professional but is, in fact, just something compiled by two young writers - Elvis Presley is one of our country's top-10 "celebrity ghosts."

"Not only is this legendary singer believed to haunt his beloved home in Memphis, but also stagehands working at the Las Vegas Hilton (where he often performed in the early 1970's) have reported regularly seeing him dressed in his famous white-sequined suit."

He ranks above other Hollywood legends such as James Dean and John Wayne, but at #3 is beaten by Marilyn Monroe (#2) and Rudolph Valentino(#1).

NEW ELVIS TRIBUTE ALBUM FEATURING THE JORDANAIRES

Photo:  "Robert Gordon is the real deal".
- Jerry Lee Lewis -

Rockabilly legend Robert Gordon ("Red Hot") and guitarhero Chris Spedding (Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music, Katie Melua, etc.) just returned from Nashville, where they recorded 15 Elvis songs for their upcoming album, a tribute to the King Of Rock 'n' Roll.

Gordon, who still remembers the impact of hearing 'Heartbreak Hotel' at the age of nine, says that recording this album together with the Jordanaires was "exciting, exhilerating and exhausting... but wow, what an album! I can't wait for everyone to hear this album, which features the fabulous Jordanaires on 9 of the 15 tracks"

New off-Broadway play Elvis and Juliet

Fred Willard, star of such film mockumentaries was "Waiting for Guffman" and "Best in Show," is dressed as Elvis in a new Off-Broadway play which opened June 7. This indicates that he is not acting in a revival of Ibsen's The Master Builder or Strindberg's The Father. Still, he is playing a patriarch in the new comedy, Elvis and Juliet, by his wife Mary Willard. Future in-laws clash in the play when the daughter of conservatives falls in love with the scion of a family of Vegas tribute artists. Previews began June 2 in a production by The Abingdon Theatre Company.

Yvonne Conybeare directs the play about college sweethearts Juliet Jones and Elvis Lesley, whose "upcoming nuptials will soon face the truest test of love-watching their two families come together for the first time." Juliet is from a family of "conservative Connecticut academics," while Elvis hails from "a flamboyant Las Vegas clan of tribute artists." The work is billed as "a comedy about culture clash, family values and a little hunka hunka burning love."

Fred Willard ("Everybody Loves Raymond") plays "The King" of the Lesley clan, and David Rasche (Manhattan Theatre Club's Moonlight and Magnolias, TV's "Sledge Hammer") is "his Rat Pack-lovin' brother." The cast also features Bridget Clark, Lori Gardner (as Juliet), Warren Kelley (as the Connecticut dad), Haskell King (as Elvis), Christy McIntosh, Carole Monferdini, Pamela Paul and Justin Schultz

Elvis House Causes Conflict.

What started out as a simple eBay bid for a Memphis house once owned by Elvis Presley has turned into a fight for possession of the King's former
home.

The Nashville Tennessean reports that after psychic Uri Geller and his partners placed the winning bid of $905,100 for the home on eBay, they found it had been sold to the American music promoter Mike Curb for $1 million.

Uri Geller already told news papers that he will sue Mike and Cindy Freeman-Hazen, but he may loose that battle as eBay indicated that a purchase of a house via internet is "not a legal binding contract". Claiming the rejection of their bid was unfair, one of Geller's partners, Peter Gleason, responded by initiating an inquest into a recent bankruptcy case of the home's owners, Cindy Hazen and Mike Freeman.

The recently divorced couple had cleared up $43,000 in debt through the case, in which they claimed the value of the home to be only $236,000, the Tennessean reports.

A bankruptcy trustee then opened the case to determine whether profits from the sale of the home should be seized to pay the couple's creditors, a move that could bring the court to reverse all the sellers' actions.

"I think it says a lot about Uri Geller and Peter Gleason that they want to dwell on the pain we've been through in the past year," Hazen told the
Tennessean.

Elvis And Juliet.

A new Elvis themed play entitled "Elvis and Juliet" is set to debut June 7, 2006 in New York. Also featuring Bridget Clark, Lori Gardner, Warren Kelley, Haskell King, Christy McIntosh, Carole Monferdini, Pamela Paul, and Justin Schultz. The play by Mary Willard is billed as "a comedy about culture clash, family values and a little hunka-hunka burning love."

Synopsis:

College sweethearts Juliet Jones and Elvis Lesley's upcoming nuptials will soon face the truest test of love - watching their two families come together for the first time. Juliet's from a family of conservative Connecticut academics; Elvis is from a flamboyant Las Vegas clan of "tribute artists." Elvis Has Entered The Building.

Elvis Presley's stint in the U.S. Army has come to mark the end of the first
wave of American rock n' roll, as well as the most vital part of his music
career.

But for Harold Heikkinen, it was a time he'll never forget.

The Atlantic Mine resident, then serving in Germany, played alongside in the
Combat Command A band for five months in late 1958 and early 1959, including
variety shows aboard the U.S.S. Randall with Presley.

Photographs he took during those concerts are now on display at Dee Stadium
in Houghton, Michigan as part of the yearly Copper Country Photo Exhibit.

Photo Dee Stadium

Heikkinen, who joined the Army one week before Presley did, first met him in Ft. Hood, Texas.

The two also rode the same train to the Brooklyn Army Terminal, and from there, rode aboard the U.S.S. Randall. There, Heikkinen played trumpet in jam sessions, while Charlie Hodge, who would go on to be a longtime associate of Presley's, played guitar and sang. Presley, breaking from his showbiz routine, stuck to piano.

"He was really an excellent piano player," Heikkinen said.

Though he was in the Army, Presley was never just an ordinary soldier, Heikkinen said.

"Wherever he was, there was a lot of electricity in the room," he said. "He was very charismatic."

After arrival, Presley headed to Friedburg with the 3rd Armored Division. As in America, people flocked to Elvis wherever he went -especially the girls. He remembered being in line at a PX store when the girls behind the counter caught wind of Presley's presence outside.

"We could have walked off with everything they had," Heikkinen said. "They were all outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of Elvis."

As Heikkinen recalls, Presley flouted military conventions, getting written up three times for delinquency. Infractions included driving his Cadillac onto his base during basic training. During his acquaintance with Presley, Heikkinen also obtained several autographs, the value of which he said ranges from $1,000 to $12,000.

The autographs will only be available to the public during times when the booth is watched.

Heikkinen also plans to display photos of numerous other entertainers who performed for the servicemen, including Bob Hope, Johnny Cash and Neil
Sedaka. Other items include a letter from the Green Bay Packers offering a $110-per-game contract to University of Michigan standout Gerald Ford (which he declined).

Heikkinen had already been part of last year's events with photos of Atlantic Mine. But his past as a member of Elvis's band had come as a shock to Ralph Raffaelli, director of the exhibit.

"We didn't know he was in possession of all this information," he said.

The exhibit is one of many at the Dee this year. Other booths cover the German prisoner of war camp in Sidnaw, the history of professional hockey in the Keweenaw and Wilbert Junttila, a Calumet High School graduate whose aerial exploits against the Germans in World War II earned him the nickname "The Flying Finn."

In July, Raffaelli said, the exhibit will offer seniors a combination tour and lunch/cruise aboard the Keweenaw Star. Additionally, Raffaelli said, they're trying to persuade Gov. Jennifer Granholm to make a visit for the summer.

"She's got an interest in history, and the Copper Country, so she likes it up here," he said.

The photo exhibits at the Dee Stadium are available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

Ernst Jorgensen FTD Updates.

In the latest The Man And His Music magazine Ernst Jorgensen talks about his upcoming SUN project. In this article he says he found a new live version of the classic "That's All Right". quoting the magazine, the version is recorded in Meridian in 1955.

In the same article Ernst Jorgensen says another FTD book / CD project is in the works. It is entitled "Writing For The King".

"Ken Sharp, who handled that excellent interview with Ernst Jrgensen in "Record Collector" a month or two back, has apparently queried a selection of Elvis songwriters.A disc of Elvis outtakes and a disc of Elvis songwriters demos will be included".

From author Bill Bram ("Elvis As The One Called Charro") we received this update:

Ken has obtained well over 100 interviews with songwriters, most of which I have never heard speak before about Elvis, certainly not in the detail that is required. Including big names such as: Mac Davis, Phil Spector, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, etc. And many lesser known, but equally as important, writers. Loads of new information.

The cherry on the cake is the "discovery" of dozens of new demos that the songwriters submitted to Elvis that haven't seen the light of day since they were produced. This will be a must for Elvis fans. I can't wait to see the final product.

68 Comeback DVD Cover And Content.

In the 1950's, singer Elvis Presley led the rock 'n' roll revolution in music and pop culture. In the 1960's he concentrated mainly on his successful movie career. By 1968, it had been more than seven years since he had appeared on stage in front of a live audience. In his first television special, clad in his now-iconic black leather suit, Elvis performed classic hits both on stage alone and, in sequences generally regarded as the forerunner of today's popular "unplugged" jam sessions, with friends and original bandmates. The program also included splashy production numbers. Usually referred to as the '68 Comeback Special, the actual name of the program was Elvis. Taped in June 1968 in Burbank, it first aired that December 3rd on NBC - the network's biggest ratings victory that year and the season's top-rated show. It stands today as one of the great moments in rock music history and as a stunningly brilliant milestone in Elvis Presley's career. After this triumph Elvis poured renewed creative vigor into his recording work, wrapped up his movie contract obligations and returned full-time to the concert stage, beginning a new and exciting era of the Elvis phenomenon.

Elvis ('68 Comeback Special) (76:12)

A new 2006 edit of Elvis not seen on any DVD release to date, expanded with content not included in the original broadcast. The edits/expansion involve the "black leather" footage. All production numbers appear in their original form for television but for the tweaks/expansions made for 1980s home video releases.

Opening Production Number: Trouble/Guitar Man

That's All Right / Baby, What You Want Me To Do

Medley: Heartbreak Hotel / Hound Dog / All Shook Up

Can't Help Falling in Love / Jailhouse Rock / Don't Be Cruel / Blue Suede Shoes / Love Me Tender / Baby What You Want Me To Do - Impromptu jam.

Gospel Production Number: Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child / Where Could I Go But To The Lord / Up Above My Head / Saved

Lawdy, Miss Clawdy / Are You Lonesome Tonight / Trying To Get To You / Tiger Man / When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again / One Night / Memories

Guitar Man Production Number: Nothingville / Guitar Man / Let Yourself Go / Guitar Man / Big Boss Man / It Hurts Me / Guitar Man / Little Egypt / Trouble / Guitar Man

If I Can Dream - white suit.

Credits (with Elvis footage choreographed to A Little Less Conversation)DVD Promo Spots

The original videotape material for this program has been digitally remastered and restored. The audio, originally recorded in mono, has been digitally remastered and re-channeled for Dolby Digital stereo and 5.1 surround. Presented in its 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio.

NOTE: The two solo mini-concerts and the two jam sessions from which the "black leather" performances were derived are found in their entirety on Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD (7-hour, 4-disc set), along with an adapted version of the original broadcast special, the raw elements and unused takes from the production numbers, and a special white suit/black leather suit presentation of Elvis's performance of If I Can Dream.

Having Fun With Elvis In Burbank (09:25)

Elvis had a tremendous sense of humor and during the production of the 1968 TV special there were many funny moments. In 2004, as part of the promotion surrounding the release of Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD, there were special screenings of selected material from the deluxe set in Regal Theatres in a number of cities in the United States. In the Regal Theatres program we included a specially assembled 6-minute/16-second collection of funny moments, which audiences greatly enjoyed. This was put together after all content for the deluxe set had been finalized and discs had been manufactured, so it was not part of the deluxe set. For the single-disc release Elvis: '68 Comeback Special Edition we decided fans would enjoy having this "funny reel" as bonus material, so we went back into the studio to refine and expand it into a 9-minute/25-second feature we know you will love. (To get an idea of how delightful it is you can watch the shorter version from the Regal Theatres program, which has been posted in the Multi-Media Gallery on the '68/Aloha DVD site since 2004.)

Photo Gallery

Photographs of Elvis from the rehearsals and production of the 1968 TV special and the birthday party for Elvis's manager Colonel Tom Parker at the studio. (Photo selections from these categories have been posted in the Multi-Media Gallery on the '68/Aloha DVD site since 2004. There are some variations between what is on the site and what is on the disc.)

Three takes from the Guitar Man production number featuring the dancers' karate segment and Elvis's final portion of the song It Hurts Me were inadvertently left off of Disc 3 of the 2004 release Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD. The one tape containing these three takeshad not made it into the inventory of raw tapes when the digital transfers used for the deluxe DVD set were made and were found later. We provide these takes here. Enjoy

Aloha DVD Cover And Content.

Elvis Presley made television and entertainment history with his Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii concert, performed at the Honolulu International Center Arena on January 14, 1973. Beamed live via Globecam Satellite to various countries and on a delayed basis to approximately thirty European countries, it first aired in America that April 4th on NBC in edited form, including four "insert" songs shot just after concert. In all, the concert was seen in about forty countries by 1-to-1.5 billion people that year, a global ratings smash. Never before had one performer held the world's attention in such a way. Aloha from Hawaii presents Elvis Presley at the pinnacle of his superstardom, giving one of the most outstanding concert performances of his career.

Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii Concert (63:18)
January 14, 1973

The complete concert with the minor deletions made for the American television special restored and with the trendy but distracting multi-screen effects of the 1973 television presentation virtually eliminated.

Opening Riff / See See Rider / Burning Love / Something / You Gave Me a Mountain / Steamroller Blues / My Way / Love Me / Johnny B. Goode / It's Over / Blue Suede Shoes / I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry / I Can't Stop Loving You / Hound Dog / What Now My Love / Fever / Welcome To My World / Suspicious Minds / Introductions by Elvis / I'll Remember You / Medley: Long Tall Sally/Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On / An American Trilogy / A Big Hunk O' Love / Can't Help Falling in Love / Closing Vamp / Credits (with Elvis footage choreographed to the closing vamp.) / DVD Promo Spots

This edit is shorter than the one for this concert on Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD because the opening theme Also Sprach Zarathustra heard while the screen is black awaiting the footage of Elvis's stage entrance to begin is not included and the footage of the cast on stage after Elvis has left and the closing vamp continues to play is not included. Other than that this edit is the same as found in the deluxe set but for a correctional tweak to Elvis's introduction of J.D. Sumner & The Stamps and The Sweet Inspirations.

The original videotape material for this program has been digitally re-mastered and restored. The original multi-track audio has been digitally re-mastered and remixed for Dolby Digital stereo and 5.1 surround. Presented in its 4:3 (1.33:1) aspect ratio.

Post-Concert "Insert" Songs for TV Special (14:30)

The master takes of the "insert" songs for the American broadcast - the four songs that were used and the one that wasn't.

Blue Hawaii / Ku-U-I-Po / No More (not used in the broadcast) / Hawaiian Wedding Song / Early Morning Rain

NOTE: This concert also is found on Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD (4-hour, 2-disc set), which includes the American broadcast version, all takes of the "insert" songs, the entire dress rehearsal concert and the complete raw footage of the "arrival in Hawaii" sequence shot for the original TV special intro.

Other photos including a shot of Elvis with producer/director Marty Pasetta. (Photo selections from the first two categories have been posted in the '68/Aloha site's Multi-Media Gallery since 2004. Audubon Drive

Audubon Drive ContinuedUri Geller's dream of turning the first home Elvis Presley owned into a museum dedicated to the paranormal has been dealt a setback nearly as bizarre as the spoon-bending trick that made the Israeli-born psychic famous.

Geller, who thought he had purchased the Memphis property in an eBay auction last month for $905,100, (481,000 pounds) learnt on Friday the sellers had turned around and sold the 3,000-square-foot (280-sq-metres) house to a foundation set up by Mike Curb, the long-time music producer.

The King of rock 'n' roll lived in the house at 1034 Audubon Dr. for 13 months before moving to Graceland, the now-famous Memphis estate where he died in 1977.

It was not immediately clear what Curb, elected lieutenant governor of California in the late 1970s, paid for the four-bedroom, two-bath home Elvis bought in 1956 with royalties from "Heartbreak Hotel."

What was clear late on Friday was that Geller was preparing for a protracted legal fight to get the house back. "We are absolutely, mind-blown angry," Geller told Reuters by telephone from his home in London. "Of course we're going to sue."

Geller and his two partners, New York lawyer Pete Gleason and Lisbeth Silvandersson, a Swedish-born jewellery maker who lives in England, may not be able to pursue a breach of contract claim against the sellers.

That's because eBay maintains real estate auctions on its site are marketing events, and not actual sales.

"The platform we provide in real estate really serves to generate interest," EBay spokeswoman Catherine England told Reuters. "... It isn't a legally binding contract."

And yet another odd twist may yet give Geller a chance.

The sellers, a husband and wife, recently had their debts discharged in bankruptcy court, Doug Alrutz, Geller's Memphis lawyer, told Reuters.

While the couple had included the home in their list of assets, the court did not appreciate its value. As a result, the bankruptcy trustee is now thinking about reopening the case, a move that could lead the court to reverse all the sellers' actions, Alrutz said.
