Presley Scoops Another Number One.

Elvis Presley has recorded his third
number one in January with "It's Now or
Never", the Official UK Charts Company says. The reissue was
Elvis's 21st
British number one -- more than any other solo artist -- and comes
more than
27 years after his death. The song is one of 18 Elvis number ones
being
re-released in consecutive weeks, in time to cash in before the
50-year
copyright protection on sound recordings in most European countries
expires
on his earlier hits. Ashanti's "Only U" entered the singles
charts in second
place and last week's number one, "Goodies", by 18-year-old
American R&B
singer Ciara Harris dropped to third place.
The charity hit "Grief Never Grows Old" which was released
to raise money
for victims of the devastating Asian tsunami came in at fourth place.
The
song was written by former DJ Mike Read and featured Cliff Richard,
Bee Gees
Robin and Barry Gibb and Boy George. Former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman,
opera
singer Russell Watson and Kenny Jones of The Who also appeared on the
track.
Veteran electronic dance duo the Chemical Brothers dropped two places
to
fifth with "Galvanize", taken from their new album
"Push The Button" and
dance hit "Shine" by LoveFreekz entered the charts in sixth
place. London
pop quartet Athlete were in seventh place with "Wires" above
three new
entries. Boy band Freefaller entered the charts in eighth place with
"Do
This Do That", Xzibit entered in ninth with "Hey Now (Mean
Muggin) and trio
Hanson rounded out the top ten with "Penny & Me".
Elvis is also listed #20 with "A Fool Such I" and #40 with
"One Night".

CD:UK #1 Prediction.
The UK chart show CD:UK listed Elvis'
single "It's Now Or Never" at #1. This
is a good indication, but the real chart is compiled on Sunday,
including
the Saturday sales. Last week "Ciara" sold enough copies on
the last day to
keep Elvis from the #1 spot. The #3 single is a chartity single in aid
of
the Tsunamy disaster, so that could easily top the charts too.
# 1 Elvis - It's Now Or Never
# 2 Ashanti
# 3 One World Project - Grief Never Grows Old

Love Elvis Billboard Review.

On the Billboard website this review of
the latest love songs compilation
"Love, Elvis" was added. It shows well produced Elvis'
releases can get the
credit they deserve.
Simply put, nobody could sing a love song like Elvis. And just in time
for
Valentine's Day, RCA's latest in an ambitious line of Elvis releases is
a
24-song collection where the artist's lovin' cup runneth over. At his
best,
as on "Are You Lonesome Tonight" "Can't Help Falling in
Love" and "Love Me
Tender," Presley evokes an unequaled intimacy that reminds us why
so many
otherwise reserved women clamored for his sweat-stained scarves. The
rumbling "It's Now or Never" and more rocking fare like the
trademark
stuttering vocal of "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" never
sounded
better. More produced cuts like "Always on My Mind" and the
soaring, live
"It's Impossible" remain passionately delivered, and "The
Fever" is pure
sex. There's some cool, lesser-known stuff here, too, including the
surfer-rumba "Surrender" and the swaying "It Hurts
Me." A previously
unreleased take on "For the Good Times" is softly swaying
perfection. The
operatic "Unchained Melody," recorded live just months before
Elvis' death,
is stunning and sad. Lovingly packaged and flawlessly remastered, this
is
Elvis, and we still miss him. (Originally Reviewed by RW: February 05,

The Kauai Planning Commission has
approved a $200 million restoration of the
famed Coco Palms Resort, which has been closed since it was heavily
damaged
by Hurricane Iniki in September 1992. Developer Richard Weiser plans to
spend that amount to restore the hotel to look as close as possible to
the
Coco Palms in its glory days in the 1950s and 1960s. Construction will

was
Hawaii's most devastating storm, which passed directly over the Island

LATEST NEWS FROM BMG (UK)
INON ( It's Now Or Never ) is still ahead in sales as of today. It could
very well grab the number one spot, although we must remember what
happened
with AFSAI last week with there being no copies left to purchase.
I have just returned from Milton Keynes Shopping Centre, one of the
biggest
in the UK and unfortunately have to report that neither HMV, Virgin or
Woolworths have any copies of INON for sale, despite what was promised
yesterday. Further, staff have not heard about the new policy from BMG(UK).
The salesperson in Virgin stated that Ciara was No.1 with 'Goodies' and
yet
they were selling very few.
The good news is that the 68 Comeback Special has returned to No.1 in
the
Virgin Music DVD Charts with Aloha No.2. Both titles knocking the Live
Aid
DVD into third place. Fantastic!
Other good news from Sony BMG(UK) is that 'Love, Elvis' will be TV
promoted
and the company are really hoping for great things with this one.

other
credits include Cop Land and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Randy Quaid co-stars as Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

Priscilla
Beaulieu Presley, the King's wife. The miniseries recounts Elvis'
relationship with teenage Priscilla even as he fell for Hollywood
starlet
Ann-Margret (Rose McGowan).
Bernath appeared in the Bollywood period drama Kisna and has been cast
in
Living Neon Dreams opposite Marilyn Manson. According to this report,
Bernath studied at the Old Vic Theatre School in London but dropped out
to
star in Kisna.
Also joining the miniseries is Tim Guinee who portrays the man who
discovered Elvis, late Sun Records producer Sam Phillips. Guinee's
credits
include Ladder 49 (opposite Robert Patrick), Blade and John Carpenter's
Vampires. He also starred in the short-lived TV series Strange World,
and
guest-starred on The Practice opposite Elvis co-star Manheim.

Biloxi paralegal was a devoted fan of Elvis.
Anyone visiting Connie Mercer's domain at the Biloxi City Attorney's
Office
does a double take. There, in cutout form, is a bigger-than-life Elvis,
a
hint at her devotion to The King. But this week, sadness cloaks the
office
of the paralegal described by city attorney Ronnie Cochran as his right
hand. The 49-year-old Biloxi native died unexpectedly after heart
surgery.
On Monday, Mercer's dad took Elvis memorabilia from her apartment to the
office so they will have mementos of their colleague, who by all
accounts
was a "real friend," an excellent baker, an avid reader and a
computer whiz.
In July, Mercer nearly lost a lifetime Elvis collection when her
apartment
complex caught fire, but her belongings were saved by a fire wall. At
the
time she was at the movies with her mother, which they did together
every
weekend.

BMG's Elvis UK #1 Singles Project.
BMG continues its very sucessful program of reissuing Elvis's #1 singles
in
the UK. Go to www.elvis18uk1s.com
for information about this promotion. The
limited edition singles have been selling out quickly, which has left
many
fans in the UK temporarily unable to obtain them. To learn how BMG-UK is
addressing this issue, please scroll down to read the special ELVIS FOR
EVERYBODY message from the record company to UK Elvis fans. Fans outside
the
UK wanting to get the reissued singles for your collection, relax and
watch
for upcoming information about the international roll-out of the Elvis
singles program scheduled for later this year.
ELVIS FOR EVERYBODY.
To commemorate the anniversary of Elvis' 70th birthday, SONY BMG
embarked on
a groundbreaking plan to release all his UK #1 singles over consecutive
weeks, starting Jan 3rd 2004.
To make them appealing to Elvis' loyal fans, the company decided to
package
each single with original artwork and make them limited and numbered.
Using
previous sales of Elvis singles as a guide it was decided to manufacture
30,000 singles - 20,000 CD's and 10,000 10"'s.
Due to the unique nature and timing of this campaign, the UK's enduring
love
of The King and his music, in addition to the huge media interest the
release of these singles has caused, demand for these classic
chart-toppers
quickly outweighed the stock in the shops.
The decision to increase the pressing runs of both formats was quickly
implemented and this additional stock continues to be delivered into
record
stores this week (January 26).
However the company, as well as the retail trade and the media, continue
to
be inundated by fans who are desperate to find copies of the releases to
complete their box sets.
In reaction to the fans comments and stock availability, the company has
now
decided to make ALL singles, from the first release, 'Jailhouse Rock',
to
the current 'It's Now Or Never', and all future singles, available in
non-limited, non-numbered editions.
This means that every record store in the UK is able to order unlimited
quantities of each single though this additional stock will not be
numbered
as previous singles have been. The company will also manufacture more of
the
CD and 10" boxes which house this single collection. These will be
available
from April 25th 2005.
As Elvis sang. 'A little less conversation a little more action' and we
hope
these actions will give the huge number of UK fans what they want: Elvis
back in the charts through national availability of these historic
singles
that will complete this unique, amazing collection.

"The Wonder Of You"

Ray Peterson, singer of 'Tell Laura I Love Her' died Smyrna, TN, 25 Jan.
2005.
Raymond Peterson, singer: born Denton, Texas 23 April 1939; married (four
sons, three daughters)
In 1958 Stan Schulman heard him singing in a club and became his
manager.
RCA was looking for new talent as Elvis Presley was serving in the US
Army
and the label wanted some new teen idols. Rod Lauren, Johnny Restivo and
Ray
Peterson were all signed to RCA, but only Peterson had any real success.
His
first single was a revival of Little Willie John's "Fever",
but his record
was to be eclipsed by Peggy Lee's interpretation. Further singles -
"Let's
Try Romance", "Tail Light" and "Shirley Purly"
- did little, although it was
clear that Peterson had a strong voice.
The songwriter Baker Knight had written "The Wonder of You"
for one of RCA's
top artists, Perry Como, but Como's producer did not think it suitable.
As
he left the office, Knight met Peterson and offered him the song.
"The
Wonder of You" became a Top Thirty US hit, though in the UK
Peterson's
version was overshadowed by a cover from Ronnie Hilton.
Elvis Presley's pianist and arranger Glen D. Hardin recalls that, when
Presley returned to live performance in 1969. Elvis called and said to
me,
"Do you remember that old song, 'The Wonder of You'? I want to do
it
tomorrow night on the first show." I just said "OK" and
worked through the
night on the arrangement.
Presley recorded the song live and then rang Peterson to say that he was
releasing it. "You don't have to ask me, you're Elvis Presley," said
Peterson. "Yes, I do," said Presley, "You're Ray Peterson."
Ray Peterson & Elvis
Ray Peterson told me a story about how, on one of his many appearances
on
the hit music variety television show, "Shindig," in the mid
60s, Elvis
Presley telephoned him.
It seems that it was the 10th anniversary of Elvis Presley being in the
music business & on that special "Shindig," broadcast, Ray
Peterson had
performed 4 of Elvis Presley's songs. Well, the phone rang & it was
Elvis
Presley. The "King Of Rock & Roll," was in town filming a
movie & he had
seen the show.
Elvis asked Ray if he could possibly have lunch with him that day. Well
when
"The King Of Rock & Roll," summoned you to lunch, you
didn't exactly turn
him down.
Over lunch Elvis told Ray how much he had enjoyed Ray's performances of
his
songs and he wanted to know if it would be alright with Ray, If he
recorded
one of Rays songs, "The Wonder of You," on his next album.
"Can you believe that. Here's Elvis Presley asking permission to
record one
of my songs. Of course he didn't need my permission, but it was just a
great
gesture, by a great guy".
"The Wonder of You," went on to become Elvis Presley's biggest
selling
ballad. Elvis & Ray became very good friends & remained so,
until Elvis'
untimely death in 1977.

1955: When Elvis Conquered Cleveland
By Roger Hall
EPGold Columnist
To celebrate what would haven bis his
70th birthday, what follows are some
lesser known facts abaout Elvis 50 years ago.
Most fans know about the first SUN
recordings and his travel through the South
to promote his records. At this time he was known as "The
Hillybilly Cat"
or "The Memphis Flash," and was traveling with his combo of
guitarist Scotty Moore
and bassist Bill Black. But what may not be known was the first city
outside the South
to champion Elvis was in Cleveland, Ohio.
Elvis made at least five-apperances in
Cleveland in 1955, including the 20 October
filming of the famous documentary, THE PIED PIPER OF CLEVELAND.
This seems the right city in the North
for Elvis to make it first. Alan Freed made his first
success on radio in Cleveland. But it wasn't Freed who championed Elvis.
In fact, Freed
didn't seem to have much interest in the young rockabilly singer from
Memphis.
Instead it was two local disc jockeys,
Tom Edwards and Bill Randle, who promoted
Elvis in Cleveland.
For more information and a list of
dates in 1955, see;

Did you witness dawn of Elvis' career?
Request tests recall of longtime Biloxians.

Has anyone seen Elvis Presley in Biloxi?
This is meant as a historical question, not one of those modern "Elvis
never
died" searches. A foremost authority on The King wants to know if
any
Biloxians, or South Mississippians for that matter, remember 1955 when
Elvis
performed in the area. What did he wear to concerts or to local clubs
where
he might have picked up a spur-of-the-moment microphone. What did he
sing?
What kind of shoes did he wear?
Ernst Jørgensen is piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of the 18 months
from
July 1954 when "That's All Right" hit the charts to December
1955 when
Elvis' shy, sandy-haired country boy ways morphed to make him King of
Rock
'n' Roll.
During those 18 months Elvis traveled the South with bandsmen Scotty
Moore
and Bill Black, recorded at Memphis' Sun Records and performed at least
six
times in Biloxi at Keesler Air Force Base, the Biloxi Community House
and
the Slavonian Lodge.
But no photographs and little description of those or other 1955
performances have surfaced.
Enter The Elvis Hunter, as the music media has dubbed this researcher
and
producer for Elvis' record label RCA, a subsidiary of Sony/BMG. Jørgensen
is
asking people who might have attended any of those Biloxi concerts or
clubs
to dig into their memories, photo collections and maybe even audio
tapes.
"I suffer from a frustration of early Elvis in Biloxi before he
became all
headliners and television," Jørgensen said.
"We know Elvis came to Biloxi in 1956, too, but by then he was
already a
sensation. What we are trying to do is tell the early Elvis from those
18
months." Jørgensen is credited with Elvis' second comeback of
popularity by
diminishing "fat Elvis" images that overshadowed his music for
the decade
after his untimely death.
This year on the 50th anniversary of Elvis' step into show business,
Jørgensen will publish a book and CDs on that long-overlooked 18-month
period. As RCA's resident Elvis expert he has a number of other projects
under his belt, including "Elvis Day by Day." Jørgensen, who
lives in
Denmark, is working with associate researcher Danny Kane of Louisiana to
help dig through the large number of responses that come whenever a
different town is queried about early Elvis visits. They hope the same
will
happen with the Biloxi request.
"Elvis is a Mississippi native son," Kane said, "so for
us Biloxi is Elvis'
back yard, and we know there are some good stories just waiting to be
told."
"What makes Elvis bigger than life? First of all, Elvis had three
fundamental advantages: musically very talented, good voice, good looks.
The
key element was Elvis' ability to combine elements of all types of
American
music into his own music, without the usual prejudice of most artists.
On a
last note, I believe that dying young often creates legends. The 'tragedy'
touches our most basic human feelings."
Ernst Jørgensen
Your Elvis stories What: The search is on for the early Elvis Presley.
Ernst
Jørgensen and Danny Kane are researching Elvis' visits to the
small-town
South in the 18 months from July 1954 to December 1955, to be included
in a
50th anniversary RCA release of music and timeline of memories. Such
stories
will help document the early career of this American icon.

Announcement of the new DVD "Elvis
- Adrenaline '71"

Last summer, with only a little
advertisement the producers put out a new
DVD called "Elvis - Adrenaline '70" and took the fans by
surprise this way.
The DVD contained like "Elvis: Behind The Image" newly
discovered Super8 footage
laser transfered in the well known quality from the original reels. The
concept was (and of course still is) to set the focus on a specific year
but
concentrating only on the Las Vegas concerts of that time. That's why
the
fan got almost 40 minutes of great footage from the Summer Festival
August
1970. An additional documentary covered with pictures and short
videoclips
the return to live performing in a never before done way.
"Praytome Publishing" is proud to announce today that the
production on
"Elvis - Adrenaline '71"
has already startet so that in the near future you'll have the 2nd
volume of
this "Las Vegas - Elvis DVD Anthology" in your hands. Like its
predecessor
"Elvis - Adrenaline '71" will have again crystal clear Super
8mm Footage
transfered digitally for the first time. Please, contact your local
Elvis
dealer for more information on this release or visit this website:

Apache Junction Residents Trying To
Save Presley Chapel
The faded white-clapboard chapel at
Apacheland Movie Ranch stirs visions of
movie- star cowboys, gunfights and dusty Western towns. But the only
battle
it faces now is the one residents are fighting to preserve this little
piece
of Hollywood tucked into the Superstition Mountains.
Apacheland was built east of Apache Junction, near Gold Canyon, in 1960
to
attract filmmakers. A bearded Elvis Presley started in the 1969 movie
"Charro!," which was filmed at Apacheland. The set was used
often in the TV
show "Death Valley Days," which featured Ronald Reagan and ran
from 1962 to
1975.
Two fires and waning interest from Hollywood persuaded owners Ed and Sue
Birmingham to sell the property to residential developers last year.
Nearby
residents are trying to raise $30,000 to relocate the chapel, which they
call the Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel, and the barn to the Superstition
Mountain Museum nearby. The barn and the chapel are the only two
original
buildings to survive both the 1969 and the 2004 fires.
"Apacheland is what made Gold Canyon what it was," said
resident Phil Rauso
Jr. "To let them go would be letting a piece of the history of this
area
go."
The museum has until May to get the buildings moved.
Museum director George Johnston said the barn has been taken apart and
the
pieces moved to a field next to the museum, but organizers still need to
get
the chapel moved.
The expense, he said, will come with putting the buildings back together
on
new foundations with new plumbing and wiring.
"We need a lot of funds," he said. A few thousand dollars was
raised from a
recent benefit and raffle tickets sold at the museum.
Gold Canyon resident Marta Saint-James said she contacted the Elvis
Foundation for financial assistance, but got no response.
"For years and years we've had weddings, funerals, everything at
that
chapel," she said. "It's part of the community."
Rauso had archived quite a bit of the Apacheland memorabilia before the
second fire and hopes to turn the chapel into a small museum. He has
concrete footprints made by stars that used the set, including Jerry Van
Dyke, Denver Pyle and Warren Oates. He also has movie props, scripts and
photos.
"I stumbled upon the place and just fell in love with it,"
Rauso said.
Johnston said he hopes one day to make the chapel available for weddings
and
events.
"We are always getting questions from people who want to get
married in
there," Johnston said. "That's why we think it's important to
preserve it if
we can."
The barn will be used for storage for the museum.

Update From Cool Clarity:
After taking the number one position for
two weeks in a row with reissues of
former chart toppers, the ghost of Elvis Presley gets a rude awakening
this
week, with what was expected to be another number one - A Fool Such As I
-
faltering at the last minute, and having to settle for a number two
debut,
writes Alan Jones.
In Presley's stead is Ciara, whose Goodies put on a late surge, selling
6,238 copies on Saturday to take its week's sales to 21,128, while the
increasingly hard to find, limited edition Presley single added a
miserable
1,236 sales to its tally, to total 20,002 for the week.
Ciara's tally is 3.2% up on the all-time low number one tally of 20,463

number one and the chart's 1,000th champion last

FTD have informed us today that they
unfortunately have to change their
release schedule for the FOLLOW THAT DREAM releases. There are several
reasons for this, but the most important one is the time factor is the
pressure to deliver higher quality and a substantial number of releases,
is more than they can handle within the time constraints. By sticking to
four release dates only, a good portion of the time consuming non
creative work will be limited.
They're returning to a policy of 4 release dates per year: Jan, April,
July and October. They aim to have the product ready for release around
the first of each of these months. They will release the regular
digipack releases each quarter and in most cases there will be extra
releases coming out at the same time: "Classic Albums", books
or other
projects.
The new release dates are as follows:
April 1st:
The Live In Las Vegas 1975 SOUNDBOARD - no title yet
Rockin' Across Texas - Stanley Oberst's book with 2 soundboards
Elvis Is Back - 2 CD Classic album
July 1st
A yet to be determined regular release

Elvis Presley Scores A Hat Trick.
Elvis Presley has clocked up his third
number one single in as many weeks
this week in the UK.
Elvis' 'A Fool Such As I' will replace his 'One Night' at number one
which
replaced his 'Jailhouse Rock' just one week ago.
'A Fool Such As I' will then become the 1001st number one single in the
UK
since charts began in 1952. Elvis therefore has the 999th, 1000th and
1001st
number one singles.

The momentum is being driven by a Sony-BMG campaign to promote what
would
have been the 70th birthday of Elvis this month.

of
Elvis' eighteen number one hits in the UK this year

Confused On Updated New FTD
& FTD Special Editions CD Releases?
Taken from the ElvisNews website:
Here are a few small updates on future Follow That Dream releases. Ernst

The album "Raised On Rock" is listed high on the "updated

no release date has been planned yet. IF Elvis'last show from

is to be released as a soundboard on the Follow That Dream label an
opportunity could be October, but as Ernst put it "I doubt it".

Well, Ernst maybe you find my news also boring.....lol.
Just a few Questions to you first, Ernst
Is it decided that the FTD - Sun book has three or four Cd's?
Not decided Andylon - it looks like 3, but if you find a concert
from 1955
including ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK and ONLY YOU, maybe be 4.
So keep looking.

Pot Luck", "Today" ,
"Raised On Rock" and
"Promised Land" , you also had in mind to release these
on 2 Cd FTD
Spec.Ed... still planning to?(besides the two FTD Spec.Ed 2Cd's
Elvis Is
Back and Today)
Yes, we will concentrate on updating albums from all over Elvis'
career -
I feel that RAISED ON ROCK is another priority!
And the retail price, will this be the same as the NewYears Eve 2 cd?
Yes.
Any other deleted title from the catalogue in mind?
Don't know. yet.
What about Indy Elvis's last show.. will this be done this year, Ernst?
There will be no other soundboards in the first 6 months.
Maybe Indy in the fall!

RECORD-BREAKER ELVIS HAS LEFT THE
BUILDING.
FANS of a music legend are all shook up
in a quest to buy the latest release
from the superstar on sale in stores across Denbighshire. In celebration
of
Elvis Presley's 70th birthday, his record label is reissuing all 18 of
his
number ones in chronological order.
The first re-release, Jailhouse Rock, went straight to number one and
his
fans were crying with joy in the chapel this weekend when One Night
scooped
the coveted honour of being the UK's 1,000 top single.
The superstar's success gives him the most number ones in music with a
tally
of 20, beating the Beatles who have 17. Fans are finding it difficult to
get
hold of a copy of this week's release, A Fool Such As I, as many stores
are
carrying a limited stock of the single.
The Free Press has learnt that fans in Denbigh were forced to surrender
their quest for the single in the town's Woolworths branch as a devoted
Elvis music lover snapped up the store's supply of three copies on
Monday
morning. A spokesman for Woolworths confirmed the sale at Denbigh and
added:
"Because it's a limited edition the record company have published
very few.
"We have had very few copies across the country. We are trying to
get more
copies into the stores this week."
Elvis could make it an American trilogy of number ones this weekend with
A
Fool Such As I. Woolworths has been inundated with calls on how to get
hold
of the single, the spokesman said.
"It will almost certainly be number one on Sunday but it all
depends on
stock," he said. "It all depends if another single comes in
late due to the
fact that Elvis has been hard to get hold of."

TOPT Turns To Elvis Impersonator.
Top of the Pops has turned to the star of
Elvis Presley musical Jailhouse
Rock after the late rock legend scooped the UK's 1,000th number one
single.
Mario Kombou, who plays the Presley role on stage, will sing One Night
on
Friday's BBC One show as producers are unable to use Presley video
footage.
It is his second number one in a row. The show used Presley photos last
week. Presley will feature in the charts for several more months as all
18
of his original UK chart-toppers are reissued.
Tribute
A Top of the Pops spokesperson said: "It's a very special number
one as it's
the UK's 1,000th. "We wanted to pay tribute to Elvis in the best
way we knew
how, so we thought getting a professional would be the best way for Top
of
the Pops to do that."
Kombou is likely to appear on the show again next week as the next
Presley
re-release, A Fool Such As I, is on course to give him his third number
one
in three weeks. Kombou plays Vince Everett in Jailhouse Rock - the same
role
Presley played in the 1957 film of the same name.

Man who claims Elvis is father now
wants a little less conversation.
"Tim Farrell mum as he keeps waiting
to access singer's DNA"
The wait has turned to months. The hope to learn the truth is still
there,
sure, but the wait is beginning to gnaw at him. Is he the son of Elvis
Presley?
Five months after he hired an attorney to seek the approval of the
Presley
estate to undergo a DNA test, former Jackson resident Tim Farrell
continues
to pursue the answer to that question. And he's gotten about nowhere.
''If it was Joe Blow next door, we probably would have gotten this done
already,'' Farrell said, speaking from his home in Michigan. ''But it
wasn't.''
The 49-year-old Farrell, a 1973 graduate of Jackson Central-Merry High
School, is in pursuit of a DNA test two years after his mother made a
death-bed confession claiming that Elvis was his father.
However, Farrell's pursuit has been hampered. He dumped a Tuscumbia, Ala.,
attorney, and there has been little to no response from the Presley
estate,
as far as Farrell knows. He recently declined to name his new attorney
and
was careful with his words. ''I'm not at liberty to give you a lot,''
Farrell said.
''We're trying not to be public with this. We want to do it with a
little
class.'' But even then, the frustration of the wait appeared to be
weighing
on him. ''It's just taking forever,'' he groaned.
From the start, Farrell figured he would need to present an airtight
case to
the Presley estate in order to gain access to Elvis' DNA. The big hurdle,
Farrell and his family acknowledged, was winning the approval of Lisa
Marie
Presley, the King's daughter. Elvis Presley Enterprises says that Elvis'
will lists Lisa Marie as the King's only child and, therefore, she is
the
sole heir to the estate. Todd Morgan, a spokesman for Elvis Presley
Enterprises, could not be reached for comment.
It'll be interesting if Farrell can make his case. He is relying on a
statement from his dying mother that was made with no one else in the
hospital room. Rebecca Holland Stewart died on Sept. 19, 2002.
Farrell also will use three other pieces of information as leverage that
he
has learned in the time since his mother's death. His sister, Regina
Holland
of Tuscumbia, has said their mother claimed to have had a tryst with
Elvis
in August 1954 after he performed at a venue called the Eagle's Nest in
Memphis.
The family also found a dated letter from a Nebraska woman who responded
to
his mother's inquiry wondering whether the woman knew the truth. The
family
said it also found a dusty address book that curiously contains names of
Presley family members.
According to a copy of Farrell's birth certificate, his father is listed
as
James Farrell, who was a U.S. Navy man. Farrell and his sister say that
man
has denied he is the father. The date on Farrell's birth certificate is
April 2, 1955. According to fan Web sites, Elvis performed twice in

Elvis Rules on Cup day.
While on an equine theme, first there was
Elvestroem, now Elvis Rules.
With refreshments and a hat the order of the day, punters spent up big
in
rural Western Australia with local horse Solar Impact starting out clear
favourite for the 2100m long race.
However it was outsider and fellow Geraldton horse Elvis Rules who took
out
line honours by half a length from Collins Street and Polish Raider. The
surprise win wasn't welcomed by bookmakers but had the punters smiling,
with
Elvis Rules paying about $38 on the tote.
In what trainer Tom Brown described as a perfectly ridden race, jockey
Shaun
McGruddy had a dream run after stepping in as a last minute replacement
for
Jonathon Pouillet who was stood down. Elvis Rules owner Mel Thompson was
also ecstatic with the win after collecting the $21,000 first prize
cheque.

Creative casting...Elvis style.
New CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tessler
brought the house down in her
inaugural session with TV critics yesterday. While announcing casting
for a
May mini-series on Elvis Presley, Tessler said Camryn Manheim, the
plus-size
former star of The Practice, would play the role of pinup-gorgeous
Ann-Margret, Elvis' onetime costar and girlfriend. After she quickly
corrected herself - Manheim will play Elvis' mother, don't you know -
CBS
Chairman, Leslie Moonves chimed in: "Who said creative casting was
dead?"

EPE blames BBC.
This message is being sent out in
response to all who e-mailed Graceland/EPE
regarding our not licensing Elvis footage to the BBC's "Top of the
Pops"
program for the show's feature on Elvis's new #1 UK single "Jailhouse
Rock."
EPE has had to turn down all footage requests from the BBC since 2002,
when
an as yet unresolved dispute between the two companies arose. EPE had
licensed footage to the BBC for one of their programs and then they
re-used
that material for other programming despite the fact that the usage
agreement specified that re-use was prohibited without separate,
specific
permission from EPE. The BBC has been mostly unresponsive about the
matter,
which EPE has been proactive in trying to resolve. Unfortunately, the
special opportunity with "Top of the Pops" had to be turned
down, as with
all BBC footage requests while the infringement issue remains unsettled.
It does appear that the high-profile nature of this most recent EPE
turndown
of a BBC footage request has caught the attention of BBC staff higher up
than those EPE has been in communication with about the infringement
matter.
We hope resolution of the issue will come swiftly, hopefully before this
week's edition of "Top of the Pops" when "One Night,"
Elvis's latest #1
single in the UK should be featured.
We are as disappointed as the Elvis fans are about not having Elvis
properly
represented on the "Top of the Pops" program during the
current and exciting
wave of success his legacy is enjoying with BMG's great Elvis UK #1
singles
reissue promotion. The BBC is to blame, yet EPE is getting bashed for
it.

Ebony's Double, Last of EP's Horses,
Dies at Age 32.

Ebony's Double, a Tennessee Walking Horse
and the last of Elvis Presley's
surviving horses, died suddenly on Friday, January 14, 2005. He was 32
years old.
When Elvis died, there were still five horses at Graceland, all of which,
with superior veterinary care, lived well into old age and were seen by
Graceland tour visitors. They were: Rising Sun, a golden palomino
quarter
horse and Elvis's personal favorite, which he acquired in 1967; Memphis,
a
Tennessee Walking Horse Elvis acquired in the 1960s; Mare Ingram, a
mixed
breed grade mare Elvis acquired in the 1960s and humorously named in
dubious
honor of the Mayor Bill Ingram of Memphis; Moriah, Lisa Marie Presley's
pony; and Ebony's Double, a Tennessee Walking Horse Elvis acquired in
1975.
When Rising Sun died in 1986, EPE did a national search and acquired a
distant relative of Sun's and named him Sun's Reflection. He, along with
Ebony's Secret Threat, a Tennessee Walking Horse acquired by Priscilla
Presley in 1983, continue to live at Graceland.

All Shook Up' an efficient tale
full of Elvis.

Production an amiable, brainless love
story with surprising appeal.
By Michael Phillips Tribune theater critic
The Beach Boys were so right. Wouldn't it be nice? Wouldn't it be nice
to
peer a decade or two into the future and assess, in total, all 900,000
shows
in the ever-growing, ever-retro genre of the songbook musical?
Look at this year alone. Thanks to the success of "Smokey Joe's
Cafe"
(Leiber and Stoller), "Movin' Out" (Billy Joel) and especially
"Mamma Mia!"
(ABBA), we have a Beach Boys tuner, "Good Vibrations,"
currently emanating
the wrong sort of vibrational buzz from the neighborhood of Broadway.
"Lennon," due in New York this summer, will in one way or
another do John
Lennon.
In the pipeline, more promisingly, there's a Four Seasons bio-musical
("Jersey Boys") from the La Jolla Playhouse. There has been
talk of a show
built upon the catalog of the band Chicago and, from Twyla Tharp, a Bob
Dylan ballet. Practically all that remains is a show based on the rock
band
Boston. Or Kansas.
Without a crystal ball, it's impossible to say where the amiably
brainless
Elvis Presley-sprung musical "All Shook Up" will fall in the
early 21st
Century scheme of things. Who knows? The show, which started previewing
in
late 2004 back when we were young and innocent, finally opened its
pre-Broadway run Thursday at the Cadillac Palace. It may well end up
being
one of the better songbook musicals, which may not say much, but . . .
well,
it may not say much.
Square little town A tick over two hours in length, "All Shook Up"
takes
place, as we're informed by a projection, "once upon a time . . .
in a
square little town, in the middle of a square state . . . in the middle
of a
square decade."
This is sexually repressed William Inge territory, a few counties over
from
"Picnic." The town is ruled by a highly starched mayor (Alix
Korey) who
eagerly enforces the "Mamie EisenhowerDecency Act," meaning
"no public
necking, no boogie-woogie."
Grooving to a new beat Sweet young Natalie (Jenn Gambatese), the local
grease monkey, pines for the highway, while her father (Jonathan Hadary),
a
widower, spends time at the local tavern. Dentist-in-training Dennis (Jim
Price) is crazy for Natalie, but he cannot muster the courage to tell
her.
Quicker `n you can say "Footloose," a magical hunk with a
helluva pelvis
arrives in the form of Chad (Cheyenne Jackson). Quicker `n you can say
"Bye
Bye Birdie," the town is moving and, in fact, grooving to a whole
new beat,
courtesy of the Elvis Presley estate.
"You must resist the temptation of lowbrow culture!" warns the
mayor, who
obviously never backed a jukebox musical. Chad falls for Miss Sandra (Leah
Hocking), the proprietress of the local museum located in a trailer.
Natalie's heart goes thumpa-thumpa for Chad, so she disguises herself as
a
cycle-ridin' man in order to get in good with her heart's desire. If
that
last plot wrinkle sounds like Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night,"
you're thinking
exactly as librettist Joe DiPietro is thinking. DiPietro is best known
for
"I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," and those who
enjoyed that show
probably will enjoy this one.
"All Shook Up" is crowded with Shakespearean references to
sonnets and Romeo
and Juliet and forbidden love, but there's enough "Twelfth Night"
in it to
put it on a list including "Your Own Thing" and "Play On!,"
two official
"Twelfth Night" musical adaptations.
Any time anyone spies their true love in "All Shook Up," the
character sings
a few bars of "One Night With You" while the action freezes.
It is a musical
running gag typical of the genre, and the show.
Many of the Elvis hits are here, in a breathless 26-song roster: "Love
Me
Tender," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog,"
"Teddy Bear," "Don't Be Cruel,"
"Jailhouse Rock." DiPietro's book scenes juggle a lot of
romantic subplots,
including an interracial romance between the mayor's son (Curtis
Holbrook),
who puts the "white boy" in "white boy," and the
defiant African-American
daughter (Nikki M. James) of the local barkeep (Sharon Wilkins). Doesn't
ring true.
Here is where DiPietro and director Christopher Ashley haven't done the
right groundwork. I know it's a fairy tale, but this is pre-Civil Rights
era
1955. Right away -- in a stunningly well-integrated saloon of white and
black patrons -- you're unable to fully buy the world of "All Shook
Up." Act
2, set in an abandoned fairground standing in for a Shakespearean forest,
is
a fair bit better and wittier bookwise, with Chad unable to resolve his
feelings for his new sidekick, "Ed" -- Natalie in drag.
The leads are more likable than memorable, which is generally true of
the
show itself. In the supporting ranks Price's uber-nerd Dennis (excellent
knee-knocking dance moves), in particular, does wonders with DiPietro's
patronizing hick-town gags. When Price and a jittery, surprisingly
unrelaxed
Hadary share a scene, you may be seeing the least rural, least authentic
heartland portrayals imaginable, even within the realm of musical
comedy.
"All Shook Up" is not authentic in any way, shape or form. It
is an
efficiently paced fraud, yet a fraud with more audience appeal than many
might expect. Scenic designer David Rockwell does artfully and well with
his
fetching two- and three-dimensional modes of transportation --
characters
come and go on cycles, a Greyhound bus, a bicycle -- although his
fairground
setting lacks visual appeal. Not that anybody on stage notices the
scenery.
There's little breathing room or downtime in "All Shook Up,"
which makes it
harder to connect with the romances. The pacing makes "Mamma Mia!"
look like
"Show Boat." Even those who have a hunka hunka time of it may
find
themselves more stirred than shaken, let alone actually all shaken up.
But
as nostalgia-mongering projects go, you could do worse. I certainly
have. I
saw a "Mad Max"-style Doors musical called "Celebration
of the Lizard" once.
"All Shook Up" runs through Jan. 23 at Cadillac Palace Theatre.

Elvis 'set for chart hat-trick'

number ones are being re-released.
Elvis Presley's 18 original UK number ones are being re-released
The late US legend Elvis Presley is likely to score his third UK number
one
single in three weeks on Sunday, according to early sales figures.
The king of rock 'n' roll has already had consecutive chart-toppers with
Jailhouse Rock and One Night.
A Fool Such As I, the next in a series of 18 reissues, is on course to
beat
the Chemical Brothers to the top.
But his next single, It's Now Or Never, will face a challenge from
tsunami
charity single Grief Never Grows Old.
Sir Cliff Richard, Russell Watson, Boy George, Bill Wyman and members of
the
Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, America and the Eagles are expected to feature
on
the charity song.
Limited releases
Bookmakers have offered odds of 10/1 for all Presley's 18 hits to go
back to
number one.
A Fool Such As I would become the 1,001st number one single in UK chart
history after One Night took the 1,000th place on Sunday.
The latest release is currently outselling the Chemical Brothers'
comeback
single Galvanize plus other new releases from Athlete, Ciara and Feeder.
Presley's 18 original number ones are being reissued as limited release
singles, with fans eager to buy the set to fill a collector's box that
went
on sale in the first week.
Record company Sony BMG is now manufacturing 5,000 more copies of each
single than originally planned to meet demand, taking the total number
of
copies of each song on sale to about 28,000.

Elvis set for No1 again.

ELVIS Presley is set to break another
record on Sunday by scoring his third
No1 in as many weeks.
The re-release of A Fool Such As I is outselling closest rival The
Chemical
Brothers by three to one, and would give the music legend his 21st
chart-topper.
Elvis is currently holding the top spot with the 1,000th No1, One Night.
The week before he topped the chart with Jailhouse Rock.
Each of the King's 18 chart-toppers is being re-released to mark what
would
have been his 70th birthday.
Monday sees the release of It's Now Or Never - one of his most memorable
hits and a possible fourth No1.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM BMG(UK)
RE.SINGLES SUPPLY.
"Dear Elvis fans,
We have been inundated with calls this week from Elvis fans who have not
been able to buy this weeks single. Demand, it seems has outstripped
supply.
As we have said in previous statements, we made a marketing decision to
limit the quantities of each release to make them collectible and
hopefully
increase demand to ensure we would get Elvis back to the top of the
charts,
where the fans want to see him. This decision was based on previous
sales
history. However, it seems that as the media interest in Elvis has built
around this campaign, more and more people want to buy the Elvis
singles.
As a result of this we are manufacturing an additional 5,000 copies of
each
single. These 5,000 are in addition to the already increased run from
last
week meaning that in total we are producing over 50% more singles than
we
originally planned.
We hope that with this much increased quantity that fans who bought the
original box will now be able to complete their sets without having to
pay
inflated prices for the product.
Additional quantities of 'Jailhouse Rock', 'One Night' and 'A Fool Such
As
I' on CD will be manufactured however instore dates will vary so please
check with your local retailer for further information.
Additional quantities of 'One Night' and A Fool Such As I' 10" will
be
instore from January 27th.
All other releases will see their additional quantities instore on the
day
of release.
Thank you for your patience and your continued support, we
wholeheartedly
apologise again for any issues incurred trying to purchase singles but
please rest assured we are doing all we can to resolve them."

The Life And Times Of A Rock 'n'
Roll Deejay.

Dewey and Elvis
The Life and Times of a Rock 'n' Roll Deejay
Louis Cantor
The Red, Hot and Blue deejay who helped legitimize race music and
introduce
Elvis Presley to the world
It all started in 1949 when Memphis's own WDIA became the first radio
station in the country to switch to all-black programming. After WDIA
went
off the air, WHBQ decided to capture some of their newly discovered
black
audience by putting "Daddy-O-Dewey" Phillips--the most popular
white deejay
in the mid-South-- on a new show, Red, Hot and Blue. Although the show
originally aired for just fifteen minutes a night, its impact was
immeasurable.
While Elvis and Sun Records were still virtually unknown--and two full
years
before Alan Freed famously "discovered" rock 'n' roll--Dewey
Phillips was
playing Howlin' Wolf, B. B. King, and Muddy Waters. Phillips is part of
rock
'n' roll history for being the first major disc jockey to play Elvis
Presley
(and subsequently to conduct the first live, on-air interview with Elvis).
Louis Cantor argues, however, for an expanded understanding of
Phillips's
role in turning a huge white audience on to previously forbidden race
music.
Phillips's zeal for rhythm and blues legitimized the sound and set the
stage
for both Elvis's subsequent success and the rock 'n' roll revolution of
the
1950s.
Using personal interviews, documentary sources, and the oral history
collections at the Center for Southern Folklore and the University of
Memphis, Cantor presents a very personal view of the disc jockey while
arguing for his place as an essential part of rock 'n' roll history.
Loaded
with anecdotes and insights about key figures, including Elvis's close
friend George Klein and Sun Records's Sam Phillips, Dewey and Elvis will
be
irresistible to anyone interested in Elvis, the Memphis music scene, or
the
history of rock 'n' roll.
A volume in the series Music in American Life
LOUIS CANTOR is professor emeritus of history at Indiana University. He
now
lives in Memphis, Tennessee, and is the author of Wheelin' on Beale: How
WDIA-Memphis Became the Nation's First All-Black Radio Station and
Created
the Sound That Changed America, and A Prologue to the Protest Movement:

Second only to Graceland,
Lauderdale Courts is the Memphis home.

Second only to Graceland, Lauderdale
Courts is the Memphis home Elvis lived
in the longest. From September 1949 to January 1953 Elvis Presley and
his
parents, Gladys and Vernon, lived at 185 Winchester, Apartment 328 in
Lauderdale Courts. "The Courts" proved to be a pivotal place
for Elvis as he
developed his unique style, for it was here where a shy Elvis would
practice
the guitar in the basement laundry room. He would also meet and play
with
the other musicians who lived in The Courts. Elvis would stroll to
nearby
Beale Street and gain inspiration from famous blues artists. You could
find
him listening to records at Poplar Tunes record store around the corner
and
Sun Studio was just over a mile away. It was here, in this close knit
community, that Elvis met girlfriends, attended Humes High and developed
as
a performer.
More importantly, it was where Elvis would garner the affirmation of
friends
and neighbors as he performed in the wonderfully designed communal
courtyards and mall of Lauderdale Courts.
Scheduled for the wrecking ball in the mid-nineties, Elvis' teenage home
was
saved by the efforts of Elvis fans, Memphis Heritage preservation
organization, the City of Memphis and Memphis developers Jack Belz and
Henry
Turley. On the National Register of Historic Places, Lauderdale Courts,
now
renamed Uptown Square, has been renovated to become Downtown Memphis'
hippest new address. It is part of the innovative Uptown Memphis
development.
The apartment, # 328, has been lovingly revived to reflect the life and
times of Vernon, Gladys and young Elvis in the early 1950s.
Go back to the days of innocence, bobby socks and DA hairstyles. Visit a
simpler time when Memphis invented America's Blues, Soul and Rock 'n'
Roll.
Walk the courtyards where Elvis would first perform for family and
friends.
Gaze out his bedroom window where he would sit and play for passersby.

Announcement of the new book "Elvis:
Behind The Image Vol.2"

In 2003 Bud Glass and Praytome Publishing
released "Elvis: Behind The Image" The Book.
The DVD with the same title was already released when the book came out
but
contrary to the rumours, the book did not contain snapshots from the
concerts to be seen on DVD.
The book, because of its style, layout and content, became quickly the
queen
of candid books. (Click here to see sample pictures:
http://www.behind-the-image.de/htm-data/news/englisch/index.htm).
While the interviews on DVD try to bring a little light into the private
life style of our man, the book continues to do so with its great
pictures.
Today Praytome Publishing is proud to be able to announce the follow up
to
the first volume:
"Elvis - Behind The Image -
Welcome To His World - The Book Volume 2"
A new high quality hardcover book full of colour candids to feast your
eyes
on.
Bud Glass has compiled more interesting stories about Elvis, taken
directly
from the diary of Sandi Miller.
Again Russ Howe shares his collection with rare and unique Elvis
pictures
you've never seen before.
While Volume 1 had the "California Homes" as a special
highlight be
surprised what Volume 2 will come up with !

Elvis Still King with Britain's
1,000th No. 1.
Elvis Presley notched another musical
milestone Sunday when a re-release of
his 1959 hit "One Night" became the 1,000th song to top the
British pop
charts.
The limited-edition re-issue quickly sold out across Britain and was
fetching as much as $74 a copy on auction Web sites such as eBay even
before
it hit No. 1.
The growling, bluesy song became the 1,000th chart topper more than 50
years
after Al Martino crooned his way to No. 1 with "Here In My Heart,"
the first
song to top Britain's popular music charts.
The "One Night" re-issue was Elvis's 20th British No. 1 --
more than any
other solo artist -- and came just a week after a re-release of his 1957
thumping classic "Jailhouse Rock" topped the UK chart.
Elvis's record label is re-releasing 18 No. 1's in consecutive weeks, in
time to cash in before the 50-year copyright protection on sound
recordings
in most European countries expires on his earlier hits.
The King of Rock and Roll's latest No. 1 comes more than 27 years after
his
death.
"He was the best and there'll never be anyone like him," said
Sid Shaw, who
has written several books on Elvis and runs an Elvis memorabilia shop in
London.
"He's as popular as he ever was, especially in Britain. There's
something in
his voice, his songs, his moves, you just can't forget him," Shaw
told
Reuters.
Welsh band Manic Street Preachers fell just shy of taking the 1000th
number
one from Elvis, entering at No. 2 with "Empty Souls."

CBS began shooting Elvis,

It's springtime for Elvis, with a passel
of projects honoring the King's
milestone birthday this year. (He would have turned 70 on Jan. 8.)
CBS began shooting Elvis, a miniseries starring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (Bend
It Like Beckham), this week in New Orleans. Now comes word the network
has
added Elvis by the Presleys, a two-hour documentary with rare archival
footage, home movies and photos, and interviews with ex-wife Priscilla,
daughter Lisa Marie and other relatives and friends. They're joined May
3 by
a double-CD "soundtrack" (Sony/BMG) and a book (Crown) that
includes
handwritten notes and other memorabilia from Elvis' scrapbook. And a
musical, All Shook Up - based on Presley's songs - hits Broadway March
24.
Unlike past biopics, both TV projects, which are set to air in May, are
sanctioned by the singer's estate, so they'll have access to Presley's
original recordings and unseen photos from the family's vault. The
special
is a family saga, says producer David Saltz, "telling the story
about what
it was like being inside the gates of Graceland looking out."

Elvis fans meet his first love.

An audience with June Juanico is one of
the last stops for these British
fans' Southern tour of all things Elvis.
"You kinda have to pinch yourself when you meet people associated
with
Elvis," says London resident Chris Lehane.
"Even walking around Graceland you think, I can't believe these
people
really knew Elvis, when you think what a huge person he was and
entertainer
he was."
"He's number one in the UK at the moment with Jailhouse Rock,"
says Northern
Ireland native David Hawthorne. But June knew him before Graceland and
super
stardom. She knew Elvis as a 20-year-old rock and roll singer who liked
to
vacation on the coast.
"They decided they wanted to come to Biloxi because they had heard
about a
girlfriend that Elvis had in Biloxi and him staying here at Gulf Hills
Resort," says June.
"This was his playground during the summer of 1955." It was
that summer that
Elvis met 17-year-old June at a concert at Keesler Air Force Base and
asked
her to show him around her hometown.
"That morning lasted until 6am," says June. "We exchanged
a lot of words and
conversation and kisses. That's the first time I ever kissed on a first
date." That first date blossomed into a nearly two year long
courtship
between the future king and his coastal queen. It's a love story June
chronicled in a book and enjoys sharing with his fans.
"The two questions that are asked the most from different fans was
'Is Elvis
a good kisser?'," says June. "And my answer is 'yes.'
And then they said, 'Was he good in bed?' and I said, 'He was a perfect
gentleman. And that's all I have to say about that.'"

The book :
The book really lives up to its title and gives the answer to the
question
"Who's Born To Rock?" not only with its fantastic graphical
material !
Elvis - Born To Rock
The time is over
to put one single photo
on a single page
and call it a book !
The front row ticket given by the book not only brings you back to 1975,
it
builds up the sold out arenas and coliseums again in your mind; it
brings
the excitment that is in the air to your home; it transports the
hysteric
screams and the thunderous applause from the past to the present and
comes
with a tour schedule, every candidate for presidency would have won the
elections with.
Elvis - 100% live on stage
The Content :
The majority of the photos, taken during Elvis long concert tours in the
70s, are so called live candids. That means, photos with small
Instamatic
cameras with small flashbulbs, with only a small coverage concerning the
illumination, and with a fixed focal distance, allowing no zooms. The
advantage to these photos is that you can see mostly the entire stage,
including Elvis and all his musicians. The disadvantage is, it was
impossible to see a close-up image of Elvis. You could not see any
facial
expressions or details of his beautiful costumes.
The fan shots are still very valuable to the collector, because they a
historic account of Elvis at different venues in different outfits.
Especially since very little video or photo material of this nature has
ever
been officially released.The content:
"Elvis - Born To Rock" offers the fan more than 320 photos on
over 150
pages, and the majority of the shots are professionally taken and in
brilliant color.
A few fans managed, however, to smuggle high quality equipment into the
concerts. The better equipment opened up completely different
possibilities
to the hobby-photographer. Elvis as single image on the photo - that
never
existed before. The word of these more professional, close-up photos of
Elvis spread quickly in the fan scene, so it was not astonishing that
names
like Keith Alverson, Sean Shaver or George Hill were called
"official"
Elvis-photographers.

Evening Show
July 19, 1975
This title, official Elvis-photographer, can only Ed Bonja claim for
himself, whose images were not only released in a book, but they were
published for the fans already in the 70s due to the decision of the
Colonel, to use Bonja's pictures for a LP cover. The difference from all
published picures so far is that the fans get nearly for the first time,
pictures taken with professional 35mm equipment. James Faro,
photographer of
this illustrated book, had the opportunity to have Elvis so near to his
lens
that no disturbing heads or fan posters obstruct the view of the
observer to
the King. Sometimes it is mysterious how it is possible to take a photo
the
way that it seems the photographer stood together with Elvis on stage.
If
you look at the photo of the cover of the book it seems as if there had
been
a photo session and Elvis posed for the photographer. The depth of
sharpness
of the photos are so sensational that even the small details of the
colorful
jumpsuits are outstandingly visible
Photos from the book "Elvis - Born To Rock"
Matinee Show - July 19, 1975
The book celebrates the two concerts of July 19th 1975 in a unique and
impressive manner. It starts with the appearance at the airport as Elvis
flies into New York. It shows Elvis on the way to the hotel from the
airport, from the hotel to the Nassau Colisuem, and finally Elvis on
stage.
Also included are interesting photos of the Nassau coliseum, concert
tickets
and actual memorabilia that was sold during this tour in 1975.
In this book you will see much more than usual 10-15 pictures of a
typical
photo set that is traded by photo collectors
Born To Rock will NOT contain the usual known pictures from the soft
cover
book of John Reggiero, published in 1979.
The concert photos of "Born To Rock" are unreleased pictures,
which have
never been published and here for the first time see the light of day.
The complete concert operation - and complete means for the producers
from
the beginning until the end - are here illustrated. All striking events
of
the show are captured here in pictures for posterity so you can always
"relive" them again - only in the memory of people who were
actually in the
audience themselves can there be seen a more vivid impression.
Largo - 27. Juni 1976 The photographer James Faro was in the
fortunate
situation not only to be at the two Uniondale shows, he was able to
experience Elvis in 1975 & 1976 on stage. His shots from June 27th
1976 have
found their way to the bonus chapter of the "Born To Rock"
book. Gaze at the
glory of the "Pre-Historic Bird Suit" while running over the
pages and
follow the concert by means of the stories and newspaper reviews as if
you
were actually there.
The Realization:
Evening Performance - 19. Juli 1975 Because the format of the Behind The
Image book proved itself, "Praytome Publishing" decided to
stabilize the
standard and to expand it in certain areas. The important attributes
like
hard cover and manually binded, as well as high gloss paper were adopted.
By
Bud Glass's decision to integrate a bonus chapter, the number of pages
was
increased to nearly 160 pages and beats the pants off the values of the
previous product. Production wise, the complete book was this time
provided
with a print varnishing. This method guarantees that (especially on
pictures
with dark areas) the fingerprints don't remain visible and so the single
pages will always look new and unread.
Like on the DVD productions of "Praytome Publishing" and
"Bud Glass
Productions" where it is always resorted to the original material
(at the
Super 8 material the original reel is used as source), the photographs
in
this book was taken nearly exclusively from the 35mm original negatives.
Our
special thanks to Bob Klein, who provided most of the material used in
Born
To Rock, from his photo archive.
With "Born To Rock" you're getting an all around - carefree -
complete
package.
Besides the uncountable photos, a lot of information is waiting for you.
Overviews on the according tour schedule with statements of places and
experience reports of fans, who experienced the concerts live, news
paper
articles, listings from 1975 directly with events concerning Elvis and a
short overview on the most important world events of that time. . These
mentioned attributes mark out the "Born To Rock" project and
ensure that -
without a doubt - the product may be called a book

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM SONY/BMG(UK)
RE. SUPPLY/DEMAND PROBLEMS.
To embark on what is truly a
groundbreaking venture to release 18 #1 singles
over consecutive weeks and get Elvis and his music to a mass audience is
something we are all very proud to be involved in. If you listened to a
radio, watched a television or opened a paper over the last few weeks
you
couldn't miss positive editorial on Presley. Getting Elvis his 19th #1
was
the icing on the cake. The only downside to the project is that we've
had
some calls concerning issues locating stock of One Night and we really
want
to address this.
In recent years RCA have released a number of singles of Presley
material -
Suspicious Minds Live, A Little Less Conversation, Rubberneckin', If I
Can
Dream & That's All Right. However the 18 UK #1 singles project is
completely
unique and something that no other company or artist has attempted. As
this
concept is so original we had no guide to how each single would perform.
Most non remix singles of Presley issued recently sell around 15,000
copies
first week so based on this, the quantities we manufactured for each
single
in the 18UK1s project should be more than adequate to satisfy demand.
We made a marketing decision to limit the quantities of each release to
make
them collectible, prevent overstocks at retail and hopefully increase
demand
to ensure we did get Elvis back to the top of the charts, where the fans
want to see him. The manufacturing run was based on previous sales
history
as stated and market forces (the sales of singles are declining hugely).
Our
goal was to sell around 60-70% of the quantities in store week one of
release with the other 30-40% selling out over the weeks post this.
Retail
sold 60% of their stock of Jailhouse Rock and All Shook Up week one
which
was exactly as expected.
Unfortunately, due to huge media interest in the 1000th single and
certain
'non fans' buying singles to sell on ebay etc real fans have had
difficulty
purchasing One Night. To counter this we have a swap facility on this
website and have decided to manufacture additional stocks on One Night
and
future releases whilst demand remains so high.
I wholeheartedly apologies for any issues incurred trying to purchase
singles but pls rest assured we are doing all we can to resolve them.
It is worth noting that the Rolling Stones and The Beatles last had a
number
1 in 1969, with Sinatra last topping the UK charts in 1967. In the last
3
years Elvis has had 2 #1 singles and 2 Top 5 releases. This is due to
the
amazing quality and lasting appeal of the music Elvis created, the power
of
his image, the work of us all at RCA but primarily because of you the
fans.
Let's all be proud that the King still reigns.

Did Sinatra Contract Ruin Jones/Presley

1960 he'd signed a contract saying that he wouldn't do guest spots on TV
until he'd done another Sinatra show. "He didn't want to sing with
Sinatra
again. Well, that's what he told me anyway."

Elvis single all set to be UK's
1000th number one.
ELVIS PRESLEY is on course to make
history on Sunday by landing the 1000th
UK number one.
The re-release of his single One Night is outselling nearest rival Manic
Street Preachers by 5000 copies.
Elvis currently holds the 999th number one spot with Jailhouse Rock. His
record company is releasing all 18 of his original number ones at the
rate
of one per week to mark what would have been his 70th year.
One Night first topped the charts on January 23, 1959.
HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "It's looking pretty certain
that Elvis
will claim the UK charts 1000th number one single. It's fantastic news
given
that the honour could have fallen to an unknown artist or a bland
single.
"With the obvious exception of The Beatles, there is no other act
in the
history of popular music which has the iconic, enduring and collectible
appeal of Elvis. "Who else could keep breaking chart records some
50 years
after his first number one and nearly 30 years after his death?
"The key to Elvis's continuing chart success is that he has a
massively
loyal following, while also appealing to a new generation of music fans
who
think he's pretty cool."
If One Night does top the chart, it will give Elvis his 20th number one
-
three more than The Beatles. Bookmaker William Hill has slashed the odds
of
Elvis landing the 1000th number one this weekend to 1/8.

Estelle Brown: Hurt, But Strong.

Not-so-good news from Chicago. Estelle
Brown (Sweet Inspirations) fell from
her chair during a concert last week. She broke her arm, but felt strong
enough to continue the show. By now, she's home, resting and waiting
until
her arm is healed.
Between 1969 and 1977 the Sweet Inspirations were the female backing
vocal
group of Elvis. Estelle nor Myrna Smith missed one show with Elvis. We
hope
that she get well enough by the time Elvis The Concert comes to Europe.

In 1956 Elvis wanted to be just one
of the GIs.

Elvis Presley.
In 1956 I was a chaplain with the Third Armored Division in West Germany.
Elvis Presley, then serving in the Army in Texas, was sent overseas to
join
the division. My first contact with Elvis was when he went to a local
military movie theater to see his most recent film, "King Creole."
There was
such a mob to greet him that a near-riot broke out. Military police had
to
escort him out of the theater.
Elvis was a very religious person and he wanted to attend Sunday
services in
the military chapel. However, it was decided that this was not advisable
because of the zthat his presence would cause. The problem was that
several
hundred dependents of the military families who lived in the area were
intense Elvis fans.
When Elvis was promoted to Specizalist 4, he was eligible to live off
post.
He rented a large home (called a villa) in the nearby town of Bad
Nauheim.
Every afternoon hordes of fans, mostly teenagers, were waiting for him
when
he arrived home from his duty. He usually stood in the door for a while
and
signed autographs.
Well, shops in nearby towns carried postcards and photographs of Elvis.
They
were already for sale before he arrived in Germany. Fans bought these
cards
and pictures of Elvis and asked him to sign them.
My young sons, Coleman and Donald, took advantage of this opportunity.
Theyz
went back and stood in line several times until they secured extra
signed
cards, most of which they traded at school for baseball cards, comics
and
other items.
One encounter I had with Elvis was certainly one to remember. My home
base
was in Butzbach, where I preached in my chapel and served the needs of
the
military and their families. I was often sent to Grafenwoht, a couple of
hundred miles across Germany, for field duty with the troops in
training.
Grafenwoht was located in East Germany near the Czechoslovakian border.
This
had been Hitler's training ground for his troops.
I was billeted in the former German officers' club where Hitler's elite
officers of the Luftwaffe were housed. Late one night I arrived in my
Jeep
after visiting soldiers in the field. My driver stopped to let me out at
the
entrance of the club. As I stepped out of my Jeep, unbeknownst to me,
another Jeep pulled alongside. The driver stepped out with his back to
me
and accidentally stepped on my foot. He jumped back, saluted me and
quickly
apologized.
It was Elvis Presley! After a brief conversation, we went our separate
ways.
Elvis was the Jeep driver for his company commander. He was well-liked
by
his fellow soldiers and asked for no special favors. He also declined to
be
assigned to special services because he felt this would be like
"show
business" and not allow him to be a real soldier. Incidentally,
soon after
he arrived in Germany he bought a TV for the dormitory that he shared
with
several other men.
After my family and I moved back to the States, I was released from the
Army. I moved to Memphis where I was called to be the editor of the
Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Conversion.
I visited Elvis at his famous home, Graceland.
Also, I was a speaker at a youth service at Bellevue Baptist Church.
During
my message I told about my encounters with Elvis in Germany, as I knew
among
these hundreds of young people there would be Elvis fans. At the end of
the
services, several teenagers came zto me asking questions about Elvis.
Two
young girls lingered behind to talk to me, they had a request -- they
asked
me to allow them to touch the foot that Elvis had stepped on.
And my wife, Sarah, had her own Elvis tale. She went almost every
Saturday
to a beauty parlor, Patricia's Little Sister, at McLean and Madison in
Midtown. The owner had been Elvis's hairdresser. He traveled with Elvis
to
Las Vegas, Hollywood, New York and other places to do his hair for his
shows
and concerts. He told my wife about his adventures with Elvis and about
meeting other famous people. One time Elvis dropped by the beauty shop
and
handed the owner the keys for a white, deluxe Cadillac. Sarah saw this
car
parked in front of the shop most of the time whenever she went to get
her
hair done.

Elvis Hits #1 in the UK with "Jailhouse
Rock"

Jailhouse Rock

Elvis has just hit the #1 spot on the UK
singles chart with a reissue of
Jailhouse Rock, and midweek sales of his latest single "One Night"
suggest
that he will soar to the top of the charts yet again this weekend.
If "One Night" does top the charts yet again this weekend
Elvis will have
the 1,000th UK #1 hit and take his total chart topping hits to 20 -
three
more than The Beatles.
HMV chart expert Gennaro Castaldo said: "It's looking pretty
certain that
Elvis will claim the UK charts 1,000th Number One single, which is
fantastic
news given that the honour could have fallen to an unknown artist or a
pretty bland single.
One Night

Elvis' "One Night" is currently
outselling Manic Street Preachers' latest
single 'Empty Souls', which is at Number Two, and the re-release of The
Killers' former hit 'Somebody Told Me', at Number Three, by around 5,000
copies.
"With the obvious exception of The Beatles, there is no other act

history of popular music which has the iconic, enduring and collectible
appeal of Elvis. Who else could keep breaking chart records some 50

Elvis Odds On For 1000th Number One-bookies
After taking a number of large bets, bookies William Hill have slashed
the
odds on Elvis having the 1000th No.1 this weekend from Even money to a
1/8
near certainty. On Sunday Elvis racked up his 19th number 1 single and
this
weeks release of One Night looks almost certain to rack up his 20th No.1
on
Sunday. There are a number of other contenders who are in with a
sporting
chance and Hills make Ciara, a 19 year old R & B act from the States,
joint
second favourite with the Scissor Sisters at 14/1. The outsiders include
The
Killers 20/1, Steve Brookstein 25/1 and the Roosters at 33/1
"Last week we were offering Even money that Elvis would have the
1000th
number one but we had not factored in the fanatical nature of Elvis
fans.
Judging by the weight of money that we have seen for Elvis it looks like
the
Elvis juggernaut is definitely on the road. That said, we probably owe
Elvis
fans a payout as we have a taken a number of bets over the years on
Elvis to
be found alive which is currently 1000/1." said Hills spokesman
Rupert Adams

The 50 Biggest Hits In Australian
Chart History.

Each year one song outperforms all others
to be the highest-selling single
in Australia. Chart statistician Gavin Ryan has compiled the 50
biggest-selling singles in Australian chart history.
"Can't Help Falling In Love" is Elvis Presley's only entry as
being the
biggest seller in 1962. In 1961 Elvis had the number 2 song of the year
with
"Wooden Heart".
Elvis had a single in the top 10 every year from 1959 to 1965. No other
artist has done such a thing, the Beatles only having a top 10 year end
hit
in four of their charting years. "Can't Help Falling In Love"
was not Elvis'
biggest-charting song, that honour goes to "It's Now Or Never"
in 1960, but
this song did spend 5 Months in the charts, and was the number 1 single
for
1962. It was also Elvis' sixth No. 1 song of 11 in Australia.
The Beatles are the only artist or group to have more than two songs
make
the number 1 spot with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (1964) and
"Ob La Di, Ob
La Da" / "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (1969)

Lisa Marie On Estate Sale.
Here is part of an interview Lisa Marie
did with Rolling Stone magazine on
the Estate Sale. Lisa Marie Presley says she didn't "go nuts".
Doing the best thing :
When Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie sold eighty-five percent of the
multi-million Elvis Presley Estates last month to Robert F.X. Sillerman,
the
billionaire investor announced his intention to "take risks on
bigger
opportunities" with the King's name and image.
Speaking exclusively with Rolling Stone, Presley confesses that the
decision
to sell was not easy, and expresses confidence in the direction in which
Sillerman will take the Elvis brand. "It's not like I just went
nuts and
sold it," says Lisa Marie, who in reality spent years searching for
the
right buyer. "I don't know if people have this misconception that
we're
going to build a giant casino on the lawn of Graceland, or that Elvis
condoms are going to be mass-distributed throughout the world, but
that's
not going to happen."
Sillerman, who will manage the estate through his company CFX, declined
to
offer specific marketing plans, but he says people shouldn't expect
Elvis to
start appearing in TV commercials, or that the market will be flooded
with
T-shirts and mini-Graceland models. "Less is more," he says.
"I think
overexposure diminishes the value of Elvis." He does, however, see
big money
in Elvis' future -- he may invest in projects such as Elvis-themed
entertainment in Las Vegas or in Japan and Europe, where the King's
allure
is huge. More than half of the 10 million-plus sales of the 2002 release
30
#1 Hits came from outside America.
Lisa Marie retains fifteen percent of the estate, as well as the deed to
Graceland and all of Elvis' personal belongings. She also has veto power
over any unorthodox new venture. "He cannot do anything that hasn't
been
historically done," Presley says of Sillerman. "That's the
thing we still
wanted control of, and that was a big part of our process: 'Is this
person
going to do something crazy that we have no control over"' No stone
was left
unturned in making sure that that wasn't the case. That's why it took a
long
time to find the right person."
Sillerman bought the bulk of the estate for cash, stocks and debt
forgiveness totaling $100 million, including fifty percent of Elvis'
publishing rights (the singer sold the majority of his master rights
back to
RCA in 1973). The mogul -- who sold his massive concert-promotion
business,
SFX Entertainment, to radio conglomerate Clear Channel in 2001 for more
than
$4 billion -- plans to form partnerships with a variety of artists
through
CFX.
Elvis, who would have turned seventy on January 8th, has topped Forbes'
list
of top dead-celebrity incomes for the past four years; in 2003 the King
made
a profit of $12 million on nearly $45 million in revenues, mostly
generated
from merchandising and Graceland tourism. In December, a fan in North
Carolina used eBay to sell some water from a Styrofoam cup that Elvis
supposedly drank from -- for $455. (He recently sold an appearance by
the
cup itself. Winning bid: $305.)
Though some fans on Elvis Web sites have expressed outrage over the
estate's
sale, Lisa Marie says her father would be pleased.
"Would he have wanted me to do the best thing for the future, for
expanding
the estate, for protecting his family?" she asks. "The answer
would have
been 'Hell, yes.'"

A Candle In The Wind.

Bill Burk's new book will be titled
"Elvis Aaron Presley - A Candle In The
Wind". This new A4 size 100 pages coffee table book will mostly be
a photo
book with rare pictures Bill has been saving up for several years now.
But
it will contain several stories too; stories about Elvis and girlfriends,
Elvis and police, Elvis and black entertainers, Elvis and co-stars,
Elvis
and the Memphis Mafia ... and the centrepiece, the untold stories.
The very first story in the book, which Bill got in August 1987, will be
"the most unusual story of an Elvis concert you will ever read"
as Bill Burk
told us. He aims for a release in late February 2005, but realistically
it
could slip to March 2005.

Awards Presentation At Graceland.

Following is a press release from the
RIAA:
With the Gold certification of "Good Rockin' Tonight" the
sophomore single
released by the incomparable Elvis Presley, the musical icon added
another
achievement to his legendary career after surpassing 50 million in U.S.
single sales according to the Recording Industry Association of America
(RIAA).
"We're honored to be a part of yet another milestone is the
legendary career
of Elvis Presley," said RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Bainwol. "His
contributions to the musical landscape are unchallenged and this
announcement serves as yet another indication that he will never be
forgotten."
On Saturday, January 8th at 9:00 a.m., a special presentation took place
on
the grounds of the historic Graceland Mansion where Elvis Presley
Enterprises was presented with an RIAA certified sales award
commemorating
the achievement.
Originally released on Sam Phillips' Sun Records in September 1954,
sales
documentation was recently uncovered that allowed SOony BMG Music
Entertainment, the parent company of the Elvis Presley catalog, to
request a
certification audit.
Once completed, the Gold certification, representing 500,000 in domestic
sales, was awarded cementing Presley's grip as the artist with more
certified singles than anyone in music history. Sir Elton John ranks a
distant second, having sold more than 21 million singles over his
four-decade career.
In all, Presley has earned 53 Gold singles, 27 of which have been
certified
Platinum with seven being certified multi-Platinum. His best selling
single
remains "Hound Dog / Don't Be Cruel."
In August 2002, the RIAA announced that Presley's album sales had
finally
passed the previously elusive 100 million sales mark and his overall
U.S.
album sales total currently stands at more than 116 million, maintaining
his
place as the best selling solo artist in history.
In addition to being the standard bearer for certified singles, Presley
has
received more Gold and Platinum records than any other artist with 97
Gold
records, 55 of which have been certified Platinum, and 25 have gone on
to
multi-Platinum status. His highest certified album is Elvis' Christmas
Album
that has been certified for the sale of more than nine million copies.
The firm of Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman audit all certification
requests for
the RIAA's Gold and Platinum award program.
Following is a statement issued by Sony/BMG (RCA Records label) for the
awards presentation at Graceland:
Today is an incredibly exciting day for all of us as we celebrate with
our
partners at EPE and Elvis fans around the world another successful
milestone. We are proud to announce that, "Good Rockin Tonight,"
recorded at
historic Sun Studio 50 years ago, has been certified Gold by the RIAA.
As
you may remember, his first single "That's All Right" was
certified gold
last July. We proudly present this plaque to Elvis Presley Enterprises
to
commemorate one more sales milestone. Expect many more to come in 2005.
As a
result of this certification, Elvis Presley surpasses 50 million in US
singles sales and is therefore placed in history as the artist with more
certified singles than anyone in music history. On Behalf of BMG, we
sincerely Thank YOU all so much for making all this possible! Look
forward
to many more certifications over the course of the year.

Jorgensen Looking For Fans Who Saw
Elvis In 1955 Asheville.
Does anyone still remember when Elvis
played Asheville back in 1955? Over in
Denmark, the King's premier producer and archivist wants to know. Ernst
Jorgensen is chasing the ultimate rock `n' roll cold case file. He's
gathering details of Presley's life in 1955, just before he became a
star.
That includes two shows Elvis did here in May and September of '55 at
the
old City Auditorium (now Thomas Wolfe Auditorium). Both were country
concerts, headlined by the late great Grand Ole Opry star Hank Snow.
For Jorgensen, time is not on his side. A half-century after a lean
young
Elvis barnstormed the country, seeking fame and fortune, memories are
fast
fading away. Jorgensen - who produces all of today's Elvis albums for
RCA -
is compiling this material for yet another project, a book and CD set to
be
published later this year. "We are trying to document his rise to
fame,"
Jorgensen said, in a phone call from his home in rural Denmark, an hour
outside Copenhagen.
The King's life after 1956 is well recorded in history. But it's that
one
year, 1955, that remains something of a mystery.
The timing is perfect. This weekend, Elvis would have turned 70. Of
course,
he departed this world in 1977, or so they say.
On the road
Fresh out of Memphis and looking to strike it big, Elvis was the
original
road warrior in late 1954 and throughout 1955, Jorgensen said. He did
about
250 shows that year, "in beer joints, football stadiums,
schools," wherever
he could pull a crowd.
"We've found some shots where he was playing on a flatbed
truck," Jorgsensen
said.
In a few markets, Elvis was already a solo star. But most towns, he
couldn't
draw a crowd alone. So in May and September of `55, he toured with Snow
and
other country acts. "He wasn't big enough to go in alone in
Asheville,"
Jorgensen said.
Just the facts
Elvis slipped into town for two gigs at old City Auditorium.
On May 17, 1955, he was part of Hank Snow's Jamboree, which also
featured
the Rainbow Ranch Boys, Martha Carson and the Country Gentlemen. Slim
Whitman, Elvis with Bill and Scotty, The Davis Sisters, Skeeter &
Georgie,
Jimmy Rogers Snow and Onie Wheeler.
A few months later, and building up steam, the future King returned on
Sept.
16, 1955, for a "Grand Ole Opry" concert, again starring Snow
with the
Louvin Brothers, Cowboy Copas, The Rainbow Ranch Boys, Scotty and Bill,
the
Alabama Sundusters, Ken Marvin ("your favorite DJ"), emcee Red
Kirk and
Elvis ("back by popular demand!").
Searching for evidence
Other than two small ads in the old Asheville Citizen and Asheville
Times
newspapers, little is recorded about those two dates. Jorgensen hopes
that
someone may have a few memories. Or perhaps, have made a snapshot or two.
"We don't want people to invent anything, but they might remember
what car
he arrived in, or a song he did," Jorgensen said. These little
clues -
especially the photos - paint a unique portrait of the soon-to-be star.
"His
wardrobe changed from 1954 to 1955," the producer said. Through
pictures,
Jorgensen can tell "when he bought a new coat or a new pair of
pants," he said.
Closing the book
Jorgensen, who co-authored the book "Elvis Day by Day," will
use these 1955
memories in a new book and CD project, to be published later this year.
"Hopefully, this will be the true tribute, full of these little
anecdotes,"
he said. "It will be the reference point for everything early Elvis."
Meanwhile, Jorgensen is working on yet another Elvis CD "Love,"
a collection
of his romantic material for Valentine's Day, and a video and CD
project,
"Elvis by the Presleys," with the King's life told by his
former wife
Priscilla and his daughter Lisa Marie
Sharing the memories
Fans who saw Elvis in `55, either here or somewhere else, can e-mail
Jorgensen's U.S. researcher Danny Kane at DannyKane@cox.net
or call (718)
247-4448 and leave a message on the voice mail. CD prizes will be
awarded
for the best information and photos.

Band's Version Of One-time Presley
Tune Hits Sour Note.
As if the incoming Legislature didn't
have enough problems, a high school
band's rendition of a tune that was an Elvis Presley hit decades ago
drew a
complaint from a newly elected member of the Senate. The Richland Center
High School band played "An American Trilogy" at the Senate's
inaugural
ceremony at the Capitol Monday - the first day of a session expected to
be
dominated by battles over budget-cutting, a tax-freeze amendment and a
myriad of other issues.
Sen. Spencer Coggs, who is black, said he was shocked, as were his
family
and other guests, to hear the strains of the Southern anthem "Dixie"
played
in the Senate chamber as part of the trilogy, along with "The
Battle Hymn of
the Republic" and "All My Trials." Coggs, a Democrat from
Milwaukee,
complained in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz,
R-Richland
Center.
"Whether the slight was intentional or not, the selection was not
appropriate," he wrote, noting that "Dixie" is often
associated with
slavery. "While now it should be unnecessary to suggest, in the
future a
list of songs should be submitted prior to a performance and the list
should
be reviewed for its appropriateness," he said. "It is
unfortunate that this
special day was marred by such an unnecessary event."
Schultz had invited the band and choir to play at the ceremony. He said
the
complaint caught him by surprise. "A simple apology is what's
needed,"
Schultz said, "and I will certainly be happy to do that." He
said he wasn't
aware of every musical selection the band prepared for the event, and
the
piece has some historical significance. "But I want everyone to
feel
included. If Sen. Coggs felt offended, I would want to extend my hand in
apology."

Hundreds Gather to Fete Elvis'
70th.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Would the pompadour be gray? Would
arthritis have stilled
the swiveling hips? Would the lip now curl above false teeth? If he were
still alive, Elvis Presley would have turned 70 on Saturday. But old age
and
the unfortunate problem of being deceased haven't slowed down the King.
"There's no age to him," said Jerry Engelby, one of 800 or so
fans gathered
on Graceland's front lawn for a cake cutting and "Happy Birthday"
sing-along. "He's just Elvis."
For the faithful, with "Good Rockin' Tonight" blasting from a
pair of
speakers, Elvis was as hot (or as cool) as ever.
That he was born in 1935 and died in 1977 did little to tarnish the
fans'
memories of a rock 'n' roll rebel or bespangled superstar.
"In the movies we're watching, he's still just Elvis. The songs
we're
hearing, he's still just Elvis," said Engelby, 62, of Jefferson
City, Mo.,
who wears pink and black to Graceland because Presley favored those
colors
early in his career.
That career, which began in 1954, is still strong, too, with Presley's
run
as a star lasting longer after death than in life. And now, at 70, Elvis
may
be on the cusp of a whole new phase in his career.
Elvis Presley Enterprises, the business arm of the estate, brought in
$45
million last year, making Elvis one of the top earning dead entertainers
in
the world.
Since his death, the estate, including the rights to his name and image,
have been solely owned by his only heir, daughter Lisa Marie Presley.
But now, Robert F.X. Sillerman, the founder of music and sports promoter
SFX
Entertainment, is in the process of buying 85 percent of the estate's
assets. He plans to take the business public and look for new markets
for
Elvis ventures \ perhaps shops, museums or other attractions elsewhere
in
the United States or abroad.
Lisa Marie Presley will keep title to Graceland itself and the house
will
generally remain unchanged.
While Graceland draws 600,000 visitors a year, thousands of them from
other
countries, the estate has focused most of its business in the United
States.
"The demand for Elvis is already in place and strong in all kinds
of places
all over the world: Australia, Japan, Asia, Europe," said Jack
Soden,
Graceland's top executive. "This gives us more resources to do more
things,
bigger things and to do them sooner."
Many in the birthday crowd at Graceland were from abroad, including
several
hundred in a tour group from Great Britain.
Ester Blajer, 59, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, said she believes Presley
would have turned more to gospel music had he not died young. As a
teenager,
Blajer wrote to a celebrity magazine's pen pal page and began
corresponding
with other Elvis fans around the world.
"One pen pal, we have been writing for 42 years," Blajer said.
"I just spent
Christmas and New Year with her in Madison, Wisconsin."
After singing "Happy Birthday," the fans packed in around an
outdoor stage
to cheer the cutting of a white and yellow birthday cake with Presley's
image outlined in icing. Most also paid visits to Presley's grave in a
small
garden beside Graceland, many leaving flowers, teddy bears or other
small
tributes.
A birthday dance, featuring a band playing Elvis music, was scheduled
Saturday night at a hotel near Graceland and The Official Elvis Presley
Fan
Club of Great Britain planned a brunch and disco party on Sunday.
Word that new owners are taking over Graceland's business affairs and
will
control how Presley is marketed has some fans apprehensive.
They want Elvis presented to the world the way they still remember him.
"That's good if it's done in a positive way, the way that Elvis
would have
wanted it," said fan Engelby. "You have to always think of
what would Elvis
want. He would want us to love each other, bond together as a family and
be
kind and giving. We're Elvis family, not just fans."

What if his beat went on? As
Elvis celebrates 70, how might his career have continued?
The king of rock and roll moved easily from "Hound
Dog" to "How Great Thou
Art," and, had he been resuscitated in 1977, a newly
health-conscious Elvis
likely would have moved closer to his gospel roots. That's the one major
consensus among a sampling of musicians and friends of Elvis.
What if Elvis had lived? He would have been 70 today. We asked people
from
Memphis Mafia members to superstar singers to the entertainment magnate
who
recently bought the bulk of Elvis's estate what a septuagenarian King
would
be doing.
Elvis's brush with death would have steered him to clean living, said
Robert
F. X. Sillerman, head of CKX, the New York company that last month
acquired
an 85 percent interest in Elvis Presley Enterprises. "Knowing his
interest
in the martial arts, I don't think there's any question that he would
have
turned to a health regimen. I think he would have become the poster boy
for
fitness," says Sillerman.
He would need the energy, says Sillerman, envisioning Elvis as a "heritage
artist," like Mick Jagger, Simon and Garfunkel and the Eagles, who
could
still draw huge crowds for occasional performances. "If he were
still
interested in performing he would be the only one around the country who
could consistently sell out stadiums."
Sillerman sees Elvis's love of gospel music -- the music that won his
only
Grammy awards -- as likely "accentuated by his journey into a
healthy life .
. . But I don't think that would mean that he wouldn't continue to
perform
traditional rock and roll."
In fact, Elvis would have been a "lightning rod" for music
creators and
producers, helping keep rock alive for the fans, young and old, who
still
leave standing room only for major rock acts. Sillerman said Simon and
Garfunkel, who drew more than a half million fans to a concert in Rome
last
year, help prove there is a huge audience of fans, young and old, with
"a
desire to immerse themselves in this kind of music."
Whatever Elvis sang, it would have been "melodic and powerful music
that
would not have been influenced by rap and hip hop," Sillerman
suggests.
Soul superstar Isaac Hayes, who shared the top of the charts with Elvis
in
the 70s, says he didn't get to know Elvis, but, like Sillerman, he
doesn't
see Elvis emulating the hip hop music styles of the 21st Century. "How
many
rock and rollers do you see doing rap or hip hop? Do you see Jerry Lee
Lewis
doing it? Willie Nelson? Elvis was a good ol' boy, a Southern dude. I
don't
see him doing hip hop. He was influenced by black music, but black music
of
a different kind."
Hayes also sees Elvis returning to the movies and "getting more
serious in
his acting."
Petula Clark, the British singer who shared the record charts with Elvis
in
the mid-60s, also sees Elvis as a "serious actor. He was never
given the
opportunity to star in a serious movie. I think he would probably have
been
a very good actor, like Sinatra if you like. He was very charismatic on
the
screen. In a way I liked him better on the screen because you could get
closer to him."
Clark says the British invasion, including herself and the Beatles, owed
a
major debt to Elvis and the rock revolution he helped create. Clark says
she
and the Beatles had listened to Elvis in the beginning and "assimilated"
his
music the way Elvis had assimilated gospel, the blues and rhythm and
blues
into rock and roll. "The Beatles sort of digested all of this
American music
which we had been hearing for all of these years and regurgitated it so
that
it sounded different. It came out with a more Liverpool accent. The
Beatles
put some real lyrics to it and some real music, and George Martin
produced
these records as if they were little masterpieces. The Beatles opened up
the
gates for the rest of us to get through."
Still, Clark says no one "shoved Elvis off his throne. He was the
King
everywhere, and he would have remained the King."
Clark says she appeared in a touring production of "Sunset
Boulevard" five
years ago. During its Memphis run, she visited Beale Street every night
and
was persuaded to sing. "I got up and sang 'Hound Dog,' and I had
never sung
'Hound Dog' in my life. It was incredible. It was just incredible. I
felt
like Elvis was right there with me."
Another musician, former Box Tops drummer Thomas Boggs, who felt the
fame of
a hit song ("The Letter" in 1967) says Elvis's downfall was
partly due to
isolation. "They didn't know what to do with a star like that."
Boggs, who
later founded the restaurant chain Huey's, says Elvis "would still
be the
King," but he would have become more involved in gospel music and
would have
ventured into the business world, including a restaurant chain.
Knox Phillips, son of Elvis's first record producer, Sam Phillips,
agrees
that gospel music would have been Elvis's true calling late in life.
"He
would have put his heart and soul into gospel. It would have made him
much
happier. I think he would have influenced a lot of people, and he would
have
been out of the rat race of trying to compete with the latest rap or hip
hop
artists."
Former University of Memphis communications professor John Bakke, who
staged
the first scholarly conference on Elvis in 1979, sees Elvis so immersed
in
gospel music that he "would probably have a cable TV show, probably
broadcasting from Mud Island. I think he would be heir apparent to Jerry
Falwell's old-time gospel hour, and he would have a tremendous audience.
I
don't see him as a preacher, but he had a deep reverence for religious
tradition, especially in song."
Bakke says Elvis likely would have given up on the movies. "I just
don't
think that's where his heart was." Instead, he might have gotten
into the
business world, likely buying an interest in the Memphis Grizzlies.
Two of Elvis's closest friends, Memphis Mafia member Jerry Schilling and
disk jockey George Klein, also see Elvis as a businessman late in life.
Both
say Elvis wanted to form his own production company, producing films and
record acts.
Both say Elvis would have continued his singing career, finally touring
Europe, which his manager, Col. Tom Parker, never allowed him to do. And
he
would have atoned for his formulaic movie career by starring in and
possibly
producing his own films. If not heavy drama, Elvis might have been in an
action series like Dean Martin in the Matt Helm detective series, says
Schilling.
Both say Elvis would have kept Graceland as long as he lived, but Klein
says
he might have turned it into a museum by now and sought more privacy by
moving east "out past Collierville."
From there, he would have overseen a business empire that would have
included at least one Elvis Presley Casino in Tunica and probably others
in
Las Vegas and Atlantic City, says Klein.
And, no, there would be no rap or hip hop music in his repertoire.
"I
guarantee you that wouldn't have happened," says Schilling.
"He wasn't into
hard rock either.

19 or 999 for Elvis in UK.
More than a quarter of a century after his death Elvis Presley is well
on
his way to reach the top of the British charts, the BBC reported on
wednesday. In Great Britain the newly released "Jailhouse
Rock" outclasses
the version Steve Brockstein did of "Against all Odds". 27
years after his
passing this could well mean that Elvis could become number 1 in the
British
hitparade on sunday.
If he does, it will be the 19th British number one for the American
rock'n
roller. The last time was in June 2002, with the remix of the lesser
known
song "A little less Conversation". "Jailhouse Rock"
may also become the
999th number one in the history of the British charts, possibly even
number
thousand.

Elvis Reaches Another Milestone
WASHINGTON, January 7, 2005 - With the Gold certification of "Good
Rockin'
Tonight" the sophomore single released by the incomparable Elvis
Presley,
the musical icon added another achievement to his legendary career after
surpassing 50 million in U.S. single sales according to the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Originally released on Sam Phillips' Sun Records in September 1954,
sales
documentation was recently uncovered that allowed SonyBMG, the parent
company of the Elvis Presley catalog, to request a certification audit.

Celebrity Clothier Manuel Helps
Elvis, Dylan Sparkle.
By Pat Harris.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - The Mexican-born fashion designer who
created
glittering jackets for such stars as Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton
thinks
that today's celebrities don't measure up.
The man whose rhinestone fetish puts the sparkle in the stage presence
of
many stars is silver-haired Manuel Cuevas, 65, who reserves his harshest
criticism for men's lack of fashion sense.
"You get young men who don't have the culture or the brains to
understand
culture with their plastic hats and bad-looking jeans. They actually
look
dirty," said the designer, who is based in Nashville and is known
by his
first name.
Manuel made his name designing glittering outfits for dozens of movie
and
music stars including Parton, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, who once wore a
Manuel suit while performing for the pope.
He outfitted Elvis Presley with his first spangled outfit and put the
skulls
and roses on the Grateful Dead's duds and the tongue on outfits worn by
the
Rolling Stones.
DESIGNING WITH 'NUDIE'
Manuel, who is the subject of a current exhibition at a museum in
Nashville,
first picked up a sewing needle at age 7. After earning a college degree
with a major in psychology he emigrated to Los Angeles from his native
Coalcoman, along Mexico's central Pacific coast.
He got his start with famed Hollywood designer "Nudie" Cohn,
turning out
conventional attire for such actors as Robert Mitchum, Robert Taylor,
Robert
Redford, Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen and Frank Sinatra -- the crooner
once
gave Manuel a $1,000 tip.
He also worked with Edith Head, a top clothing designer to the Hollywood
movie studios, helping outfit James Dean for the movie "Giant,"
Paul Newman
for "Cool Hand Luke" and John Travolta for "Urban
Cowboy."
"But I wanted to do more than conventional designs," he said.
"As a kid, I
was always the white bean in the black bean soup."
Thus began his foray into sequins and spangles
"Everything I create is for a unique personality," he said of
his intensely
detailed, hand-embroidered outfits that sell for as much as $25,000. One
he
created for Johnny Cash recently sold at auction for $67,000.
Asked how many rhinestones he uses in a typical outfit, Manuel said:
"About
ten thousand in the jacket alone. But it's worth it."
Cash thanked Manuel for his work with the gift of a guitar inscribed
with
the words "Keep on Pickin'."
"That goes back to 1957 or so when his song 'I Walk the Line' was a
big
hit," Manuel said in a recent interview prior to the opening of the
exhibition of his work at the Frist Art Center.
"I designed for (Cash's wife) June Carter Cash, too, something I
really
enjoyed. I like to make women pretty.
"I've never understood why they choose white for bridal gowns. They
should
be like beautiful flowerpots with lots of color. I have designed many
gowns
for women that brought out their distinctive beauty."
Couture for men is on a downswing, he said.
"Men don't dress well. They're too conservative. They should let
the
designer do the designing," said Manuel, who moved his business to
Nashville
in 1989.
The exhibition, "Manuel: Star-Spangled Couture" continues
through May 22.
Manuel needed a decade to create the exhibit's centerpiece: 50 dazzling
red,
white and blue jackets honoring each U.S. state.
Tennessee's jacket features a sewn Grand Ole Opry backdrop, while
Alabama's
is adorned with a U.S. Space Camp badge and Alaska's garment has
reindeer
and native art.
A side gallery features suits worn by Mike Mills of the rock band REM,
Joe
Perry of Aerosmith, Dwight Yoakum (bearing his trademark slashed knees)
and
Linda Ronstadt.

Band's Version Of One-time Presley
Tune Hits Sour Note.
As if the incoming Legislature didn't have enough problems, a high
school
band's rendition of a tune that was an Elvis Presley hit decades ago
drew a
complaint from a newly elected member of the Senate.
"But I want everyone to
feel
included. If Sen. Coggs felt offended, I would want to extend my hand in
apology."

Hour
Elvis Radio Show on This Week in New York City.
For those of you living in or around the New York City, there will be an
excellent radio show about Elvis on all this week. It will be on WCBS-FM
101.1 tonight, tomorrow night, Thursday and Friday nights. Each
installment
runs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. It is hosted by "Mr. Music" Norm N.
Nite, a DJ
who truly reveres Elvis. According to the promo, the 8 hour how will
feature
more than 100 of his greatest hits.
When I was a kid in the mid-80s, Nite hosted a similar show (all in one
day). It was great - I heard things that I had never heard before (back
when
I only knew some of his greatest hits). I amsure he'll play lots of the
lost
hits, maybe even an FTD cut or too. I know I'll be tuning in.
In fact, CBS-FM is playing Elvis all week, so it should be a great week.
Finally, the station is sidestepping its recent Beatles and pre-64 bias.

Kingsmill Insults The Memory of
Elvis.

Photo: Kingsmill's loaf shaped as Elvis' head
The UK's Elvisly Yours website is doing a petition to stop "Kingsmill
insult
of the King". From the site:
Kingsmill is the leading brand of bread in the UK. They started a TV
promotion using "The King" and an American Elvis tribute
artist in their TV
commercial campaign costing £7 million. It is a just a silly spoof
about a
50's Elvis , the King, their brand name and how Kingsmill (the King of
breads) is now baked "By Appointment to the King".
The campaign was harmless and was a bit of fun. Sadly their campaign
will
now turn decidedly sick as they are now in the process of baking loaves
of
bread in the shape of Elvis' head and if you find "Elvis' head"
in your
packet. wow you can win a prize. There will be thousands of loaves of
bread
in the UK depicting the head of Elvis Presley. Not only can you but a
loaf
of bread in the shape of Elvis' head you are even encouraged by the
marketing department of Allied Bakeries to "toast" the King
and why not bite
off Elvis' nose, chin or swallow the whole head whole? How many loaves
will
have Elvis' face missing a nose or lips? Will the bread become squashed
looking like something out of a horror movie? I cannot think of any
advertising campaign as sick as this atrocity and promoted by none other
than Associated British Food's no.1 brand of bread in the UK, Kingsmill.
Perhaps "Sickmill" is a more appropriate name. Does their
Chief Executive
Officer know he is going to insult millions of Elvis fans, Elvis family
and
his memory?

RENE SHUMAN And Angel-Eye

The first time I'd heard about
Rene Shuman was back in 1985. Rene did an almost perfect
Elvis imitation in a Dutch TV Program called "The Soundmix
Show". In the grand final he
ended at 2nd place. Even now I can't remember who won the final , but I
was very impressed
about Rene's performance. Shortly after the Sound Mix Show, he recorded
a song called
"But Where My Love". This beautiful song had all the elements
to become a hit and it made
it's entrance in the Top 10. Since then, he recorded several records
with as an absolute highlight
the song "On Top Of The World", which was written by Phil
Everly, Together they sing a duet
on this record. In the early 90's I was involved with several
Elvis meetings organized by the Dutch
fanclub "It's Elvis Time". It's there where I met Rene several
times and got a change to see him perform
live on stage. In 1997, he performed on the 20th Anniversary party
in Memphis, Tennessee, and was
one of the big attractions over there. In his career he recorded songs
with The Jordaniares, cut some
demo's in Nashville, Tennessee, and in 2003 he recorded the Elvis song
"Don't Be Cruel" together with
the talented Angel-Eye. Another highlight took place in 2004 where
Rene and Angel-Eye did an excellent
performance with the TCB band In Paradiso, Amsterdam, last year.
And now, only one week before the Elvis Birthday party In Beverwijk, I'm
looking forward to see Rene and
Angel-Eye do their thing live on stage. You still have the change to be
there as well.
Just call the following phone-numbers;
Voorverkoop : 0251-270653 or
0251-243703
Or you can buy them at the
International Elvis Shop in Beverwijk.
I've put 2 clips of their performances on EPGold so you can see it
yourself.
