About HDCD
High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD) is a patented encode/decode
process for delivering the full richness and detail of the original
microphone feed on Compact Discs and DVD-Audio. HDCD-encoded CDs sound
better because it is encoded with 20 bits of real musical information,
in
stead of the standard 16 bits encoding. HDCD overcomes the limitation
of the
16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the
additional 4
bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the
existing CD
format. With HDCD, you get the body, depth, and emotion of the
original
performance not a flat, digital imitation.
Note : HDCD and DSD? It even has a sticker saying Direct SBM!
Why use three
different sampling technologies (18-bit SBM-Direct, 20-bit HDCD and
then
1-bit/2.8Mhz DSD) on one disk? Nobody would engineer a disk that way!

Elvis Presley Festival Facing
Financial Losses.
Ticket sales were disappointing this
year and 2005 could be the last year
for the Elvis Presley Festival, organizers say. The Downtown Tupelo
Main
Street Association has reported a loss of $5,465 for the 2004
festival. It
was sixth year of the event which concluded Saturday.
This is the second consecutive year the event has lost money,
organizers
said. In 2003, the festival lost $2,642. "We can break even or
make a little
money, but we can't keep losing money," said Jim High, assistant
director of
Main Street.
The Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau cut its total allotment of
contributions to the festival from $100,000 in 2003 to $50,000 in
2004. "We
love festivals," said Linda Butler Johnson, CVB executive
director. "And we
love to help with seed money, but over a period of time we need to
pull back
and let them stand on their own feet."
Gary Bailey, festival chairman, said there are no plans to stop the
downtown
Tupelo festival after 2005, but it's a possibility if revenues don't
outpace
expenditures. "It is a serious situation," Bailey said.
"We have to do
whatever we can to make it successful next year." Presley was
born in
Tupelo.
The event has drawn some well-known musical acts in the last six
years,
including B.B. King and Rock-n-Roll pioneer Little Richard. High said
the
festival will most likely remain a two-day, ticketed event on Friday
and
Saturday with a free gospel program on Sunday. Bailey

Richard Davis
Memphis-born Richard Davis was many
things to Elvis: friend, valet,
bodyguard, even movie stand-in. He went to work for Elvis in the early
60'ies and their relationship continued up until Elvis's death in
1977. He
was present when Elvis met the Beatles in 1965, during the taping of
the '68
Comeback Special, the Vegas shows and on most of the studio recording
sessions. Davis never wrote a book "because there's never been a
book
written about Elvis yet that's totally truthfull. I don't agree with
books
(of the Memphis Mafia), because a lot is fabrication. They're only
written
to make money at Elvis's expense, and he's not here to defend
himself."
EPE is in touch with his family and will update the information as
soon as
possible.

HONORS THE KING OF ROCK N ROLL ON THE GENRES 50TH
ANNIVERSARY
Commemorative
Elvis Presley Issue Hits Newsstands on September 10th
New York, New York (August 26, 2004) - Billboard,
the world's leading music and entertainment trade publication, salutes
Elvis Presley and the 50th anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll, with a special
report in the Sept. 18 issue of magazine. The special issue will
be available on newsstands Sept. 10th and will also be posted
on www.billboard.com.
Fans can also purchase the Elvis Presley special issue online at www.orderbillboard.com.
"Elvis: 50 Years of Rock 'n' Roll" reports on the enduring
impact of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, 50 years after the recording of his
first hit, "That's All Right," at Sun Studio in Memphis in
1954. His music has stood the test of time and even 27 years after
his death, Elvis is still considered one of the most influential figures
in pop culture and music history.
Elvis Presley has had over 149 songs on the Billboard Hot 100
Chart and earlier this year, the Recording Industry Association of
America (RIAA) confirmed that Presley is officially the best-selling
solo artist in U.S. history. Billboard will honor Elvis by
comprehensively exploring his role in society and how he helped change
music forever.
The Billboard report will feature:
* An introductory essay on Presley's ongoing cultural significance,
written by veteran music journalist Wayne Robins.
* A comprehensive overview of the campaign by Presley's record company
to introduce his music to a new generation through hit albums such as
"Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits" and the recent release of expanded DVD
versions of "Elvis: â"68 Comeback Special" and"
Elvis, Aloha From Hawaii."
* An exclusive Q&A interview with Jack Soden, president of Elvis
Presley Enterprises, on keeping Presley's legacy alive -- including news
of the upcoming TV and book project, tentatively titled "Elvis By
The Presleys."
* A look back at that Sun Studio recording session in July 1954, which
help launch Rock 'n' Roll, with comments from Presley's guitarist,
Scotty Moore.
* An exclusive recap of every No. 1 single Presley recorded on the
Billboard charts.
"At the heart of it all," says Jack Soden president of Elvis
Presley Enterprises, "is always the power of the music."

Sony keeps eye on MGM.
TOKYO Sony said on Monday that it was
still interested in buying
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer after a report that Time Warner was nearing the
final
stages of a rival bid.
"We are still interested in MGM, but it's a negotiation, and it
will be done
when it is done," said Keita Sanekata, a Sony spokesman in
Tokyo. He
declined to comment further.
At stake are about 4,000 MGM movie titles, including the "James
Bond" and
"Rocky" series, which would bring the Sony chairman
Nobuyuki Idei closer to
making his Tokyo-based company also a supplier of content for
consumer
electronics products.
Kirk Kerkorian, the controlling stakeholder in Los Angeles-based
MGM, may
select a buyer in the next few weeks, The Financial Times reported
on
Monday, citing unidentified sources. New York-based Time Warner
values MGM's
debt and equity at $4.8 billion, the report said.
The Time Warner chief executive, Dick Parsons, has yet to persuade
his board
to support an acquisition, the paper said.
In April, a consortium led by Sony of America made a $5 billion bid
for MGM
and agreed to an exclusive negotiating period. But Sony was unable
to
complete the deal quickly, having become bogged down in negotiations
with
its own backers. This failure to complete the deal appears to have
opened up
the field to rival bids.

(1974), "The Man in
the Santa Claus Suit" (1979), "Angel on My Shoulder"
(1980) and 1982's "My
Palikari," starring Telly Savalas. And he contributed to such
series as
"Arrest and Trial," "Kraft Suspense Theatre,"
"Love, American Style" and
"Mary Tyler Moore."
An irrepressible raconteur, Kirgo entered show business when his
1958 comic
novel "Hercules, the Big Greek Story" caught the attention
of Jack Paar, who
invited Kirgo to become a guest on his talk show. That, in turn,
brought the
writer to Los Angeles in 1962 when he became a regular panelist on
"Your
First Impression," the game show produced by Monty Hall.
Kirgo, who received the President's Award from P.E.N. in 1988, also
was a
board member of the Writers Guild Foundation, a member of the
Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a founding member of the
National Film
Preservation Board of the Library of Congress.
He his survived by his wife, Angela Wales Kirgo, program director of
the
Writers Guild Foundation; his children Julie, Dinah and Nick, from
his
marriage to Terry Newell, who died in 1986; his stepson, Alec
Perrin; his
sister, Rita; and four grandchildren.
A memorial will be held at the WGA at a date to be determined.

Mother Maybelle's Guitar At Hall
Of Fame.
One of country music's most important
pieces of history is now home at the
Country Music Hall of Fame. It's a guitar once owned by Mother
Maybelle
Carter. And on Monday, some of country's biggest stars passed it
around.
It's a guitar that changed country music forever. It was Mother
Maybelle
Carter who first introduced the guitar as a lead instrument in
country
music. While touring with the Carter family in the 50's, Elvis
Presley often
borrowed Maybelle's guitar when he'd break a string on his. In June,
a
Murfreesboro philanthropist pledged a million dollars to the museum
so it
could purchase the priceless instrument.

The Pied Piper of Cleveland: A Day in the Life of a Famous Disc
Jockey, (1955)
Elvis Presley's first film is a documentary on the career of disc
jockey
Bill Randle, who in the 1950s was as well known as Alan Freed. Due
to legal
problems over ownership of the film, this movie was only shown in
public
once, and has yet to be released officially. Universal Studios
reportedly
still has the negatives in its vaults.

Filmed for the Movie Short "The Pied Piper Of Cleveland - A Day
In The Life
Of A Famous Disc Jockey"
Prior to one of his first TV appearances on "Stage Show",
Elvis is
introduced with the comment that he had recently appeared in a movie
short.
This is the film that was being referred to.
More info:
In the fall of 1955, Wain attended a concert Randle was promoting.
"There
was this kid I had never heard of, singing and shaking his
hips," said Wain.
"When it was over, Randle turns to me and says, 'This guy is
going to be the
biggest star in America.' I said, 'Yeah, right.' "
The kid was Elvis Presley.
It was only Presley's second foray to the North. Randle was playing
up his
records in Cleveland and had him on the bill that day with headliner
Pat
Boone and Bill Haley and the Comets.
The two concerts, at Brooklyn High School and St. Michael's Hall,
have
become part of rock lore, because they were filmed for a Universal
short on
"The Pied Piper of Cleveland," namely Randle. The DJ
wisely had the film
crew, against their objections, shoot the kid from Mississippi. It
is the
only footage of the early Elvis. Randle reportedly sold the film
rights in
1992 for $1 million (an amount he later called "a lot of
baloney.")
Randle has said that he turned down an offer to manage the singer.
But in
January 1956, he did introduce Presley on his first national TV
appearance
on CBS' "Stage Show." By then, Randle was doing double
duty, also serving as
host of a popular Saturday afternoon show on WCBS in New York, where
he also
heavily featured Presley's music.
The question on everyone's lips is when is this great footage ever
going to
get a release?

Elvis legend takes his leave.

Al Dvorin, the announcer who made
famous the legendary phrase, "Elvis has
left the building", has died at the age of 81. Dvorin was
killed in a car
accident as he returned from an Elvis convention in California.
He first met Elvis Presley in 1955 and worked with him for 22 years,
helping
to organise his tours and personal appearances. It was in the early
1970s
that the star's manager, Colonel Parker, asked Dvorin to inform fans
after a
gig that Elvis would not be appearing for an encore.
Dvorin took the stage and made his now legendary announcement:
"Ladies and
gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and
goodnight."
The phrase, which was first uttered by other announcers early in
Presley's
career, became a staple at Elvis concerts and has lived on long past
the
star's death. But Dvorin was never paid a penny for the words, which
have
been reproduced countless times over the years, and he remained
bitter
towards Elvis Presley Enterprises, the multimillion-pound empire now
run by
the star's daughter, Lisa Marie.
Sid Shaw, owner of London memorabilia store Elvisly Yours and a
close friend
of Dvorin, said: "Of all the people I have met associated with
Elvis, he was
the nicest, funniest, smartest and most honest.
"He had so many great memories of Elvis that I always told him
he should
write a book. "But after Elvis died, he kept a low profile
because of his
friendship with Colonel Parker and because he didn't want to be seen
cashing
in on Elvis's death like so many others had done. "It was only
a few years
ago, after the Colonel died, that he decided to start attending
Elvis events
and conventions around the world to share some of his
memories."
At the time of the accident, Dvorin
was in a car driven by Ed Bonja, a
longtime Elvis photographer. A former band leader and talent agent
in
Chicago, Dvorin first met Elvis through his work with Colonel
Parker. He was
among those on Elvis's last tour in 1977. The singer died of heart
problems
and drug abuse that August.
A spokesman for the Elvis Presley estate in Graceland said: "He
was a
fixture in Elvis world. He'll be greatly missed."

VFW post pays own tribute to Elvis
in name.

Ptoto: Gene McPherson, Ted
Harris and D. J. Fontana pose with other Elvis
Presley Whitehaven VFW post 4935 veterans outside the building
During last year's Elvis Tribute Week, Ted Harris, a
singer/songwriter from
Georgia and a lifelong Elvis fan (he remembers watching the '68
comeback
special on television even though he was only 3 years old), thought
he would
like to do something different to honor Memphis's most famous
resident.
A Marine Corps and Navy veteran with 22 years of service, Harris is
proud
that Elvis Presley served in the armed forces and is impressed with
the way
he conducted himself during the two years he spent in the Army,
refusing all
special treatment offered to him. "He just wanted to be one of
the guys, a
regular soldier and I don't think that at the time his service was
as
appreciated as it should have been, nor has it really been
acknowledged
since," said Harris.
"When Elvis passed away, I understand there was a military
honor guard
standing by his coffin at the visitation but he should have had a
full
veteran's funeral service, he earned it." As Whitehaven VFW
Post 4935 junior
vice commander, Harris received no opposition when he decided to
pitch the
idea to the almost 300 members to rename the post the Elvis Presley
Whitehaven Memorial 4935.
The result was a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. on Aug. 7
attended by
Elvis's first drummer, the legendary D.J. Fontana. Harris's own
newly formed
band, The EP Express, gave a show at 3 to continue the daylong
dedication.
The 10-member band of seasoned and talented musicians includes
Harris's
wife, Cathy, who is a veteran of 21 years.
Harris hopes to bring in new and younger veterans as members, and
the public
is also welcome. "Elvis Presley was a great patriot who gave
unselfishly to
his country and the world," said Harris. "This is giving
him a little bit
back, we are proud to do this for him." Planned as a further
tribute, Harris
wants the members of Post 4935 to present Lisa Marie Presley and
Graceland
with an American flag on March 24, the anniversary of Elvis's
induction into
the Army. "I think Elvis would be pleased," Harris said.

Experiencing Elvis once more.

THESE four veteran musicians - Jerry
Scheff, Ronnie Tutt, Joe Guercio, Glen
Hardin - aren't exactly well-known names unless you're an avid music
fan.
Here's a clue: think Elvis Presley.
These four who played for him in the 70s can tell you all about the
King of
Rock's inimitable talent and style, or better still, show you what a
concert
with the King was like. Which is exactly what they're in town to do
-
they're performing Elvis - The Concert tomorrow.
And no, it's not an impersonation-type concert, thanks to
technology. Says
Stig Edgren, the producer of the concert: 'The most important thing
which is
also difficult to convey to people is that there won't be an
impersonator.
It's really Elvis.' Elvis in a video projection, that is.
The 'real' human beings on stage will be his original band members
and
backup singers - The Sweet Inspirations and The Stamps Quartet.
'What we've
done is to compile Elvis' isolated vocal tracks so that he's really
singing
and talking in the concert. This will be combined with footage of
his finest
concert performances,' says Mr Edgren in a phone interview from
Hawaii.
This is possible because such recordings were made because of
Elvis's fame.
Not all of the earlier stars had isolated vocal tracks, points out
Mr
Edgren. 'For anyone here who's seen a live performance, this would
bring
back very strong memories of the original concerts. In fact, the
show also
looks and sounds better because of improvements in sound and
lighting. We've
updated it in that sense.'
Elvis - The Concert has been performed over 100 times since 1998.
The show
was mooted by Graceland in 1997, and was so successful that it's
toured
internationally since its debut a year later. Mr Edgren, 50, was
approached
because of his experience in putting up world-class events -
developing a
new concert format by using state-of-the-art video projection
techniques to
create interactive shows.
His first live 'video duet' concert was pairing Natalie Cole and a
video
projection of her famous father, Nat King Cole, singing
Unforgettable.
Talking about what it was like to recruit the band members for this
performance, Mr Edgren reveals it did take a bit of arm-twisting.
'Back in the 90s, the band members hadn't done something like this
before,
and there's also an emotional concern for some of them. The first
time we
put video and the live band together, everybody had to stop for a
minute.'
He worked closely with Joe Guercio, the musical director and
conductor for
Elvis's shows from 1970 to 1976. Guercio created the now almost
iconic
six-note theme for Elvis's stage entrances and bows.
Ronnie Tutt was Elvis's drummer from 1969 to 1977, while Jerry
Scheff was
the bass guitarist. Glen Hardin will reprise his role on piano. A
total of
32 songs will be in the show. 'We chose the best songs to be
presented in
the 90s, and they also reflect the changes from an era to another,'
says Mr
Edgren. At least he won't have to worry that the crew will be mobbed
by
fanatic female fans before or after the concert.
'And Elvis won't need a dressing room either,' he quips. Elvis - The
Concert
is on at the Singapore Indoor Stadium tomorrow night at 8pm. Tickets
from
$100 to $300 are available from Sistic.

Guitarist James Burton praises
Elvis.

The soft-spoken Louisiana guitar
picker with a sugary drawl is visiting "my
momma" in Shreveport as he's about to embark on another Elvis
Presley world
tour.
"I always come to stay with momma before I go on tour,"
says Rock 'n Roll
Hall Fame guitar player James Burton on the phone.
"We're very close." Burton, who will perform Sunday night
in the "Elvis --
The Concert" extravaganza at the Blaisdell Arena, played lead
guitar for
Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley and a host of other legendary musicians.
The
concert reunites former Elvis band-mates live on stage with a
state-of-the-art video projector system, complete with a singing
Elvis.
In 1998, "Elvis -- The Concert" was designated a Guinness
World Record
holder as the first live tour headlined by a performer who is no
longer
living. (Presley died Aug. 16, 1997.)
The show's concept is to present an authentic as possible an Elvis
Presley
concert. Producers edited together a collection of Elvis' finest
concert
performances that exist on film and video and removed virtually all
sound
from the footage except for the man's vocal. Besides Burton, other
original
tour-mates of Elvis in the show include musical director and
conductor Joe
Guercio, Burton's mates in the Takin' Care of Business Band, pianist
Glen D.
Hardin, bassist Jerry Scheff and drummer Ronnie Tutt, and from
backup vocal
groups the Sweet Inspirations and the Stamps Quartet, Estelle Brown,
Myrna
Smith, Ed Enoch and Ed Hill.
Original principal orchestra members include Ron Feuer on keyboards
and Walt
Johnson on trumpet. BURTON, 65, got his first job at age 14 as a
member of
the house band on the popular radio show "Louisiana
Hayride," which Elvis
performed on early in his career.
It was on the radio show where Burton met Dale Hawkins, whose 1957
hit,
"Suzie Q," was the first in a string of hits to feature
the young Burton's
guitar work. On a trip to Los Angeles, Burton was in a recording
studio
where Ricky Nelson was also working. The singer heard Burton's
playing and
stopped by to meet him. "We were both 16, so we had that and
music in
common," said Burton, who had hoped himself to be a singer.
Nelson introduced Burton to his father Ozzie, who invited the
youngster to
perform on "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" TV
show. That gig led to a
six-year stint, 1958 to '64, recording and touring in Nelson's band
and
several cameos on the TV show whenever Ricky's music was showcased.
"Yeah, when I started working with Ricky, his dad Ozzie wanted
me to smile,
so I always had this dumb look on my face and I haven't been able to
break
it," he said, laughing. "My momma was mad when I went to
work with Ricky
because she was worried about me all the way out in L.A.," he
said. "I had
just turned 17."
But the Nelsons stepped up to the plate and let Burton live in their
home
for two years. Anyone who saw either Nelson or Elvis perform in
concert
couldn't miss Burton.

He was always either standing to the
left of Nelson or to the right of
Elvis. Because of his brilliant guitar playing -- Burton perfected a
style
he calls "chicken pickin' " -- his skills were in demand,
and has since
played on countless recording sessions since he first played lead on
that
Hawkins' classic.
"Gosh, I was working for everybody at one time it seemed,"
he said. "I was a
side musician for the Buffalo Springfield, Monkees, Elvis from 1969
until he
died in 1977, Gram Parsons, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, John
Denver, Buck
Owens, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. "I've played for two
Elvises, Presley
and Costello," he said.
"I just recorded some songs with Keith Richards, who's a good
friend. Keith
was the one who inducted me in that Hall of Fame. "The
recognition of
getting into the Hall of Fame was surprising," Burton said.
"I didn't know
anything about it until my friend (producer) Andy Paley called me
after
hearing the news on television. The Hall of Fame called to
congratulate me a
little later. I felt like I won an Oscar or something." Burton
played a
major role in popularizing a twangy Telecaster electric guitar sound
that
remains an integral part of country music to this day.
"Elvis was a very sweet, nice man," Burton said. "He
treated us like family,
real family. He was always asking how we were doing, how our
families were
doing and if we needed anything, anything, he would take care of it
and
sometimes we had no idea he was doing it.
"Maybe he gave too much of himself to everyone. "Elvis
touched people's
lives all over the world. He sang with passion and he loved, just
loved,
pleasing his fans."

Elvis infects the Lycos top 50.
While West Nile infects the American
populace, the Presley family infects
the Lycos 50.
First comes paterfamilias Elvis, who rises all the way to #6 on this
week's
list. Perhaps the hype over the 25th anniversary of his death will
put Elvis
at #1 next week.
Elvis' daughter Lisa Marie Presley also makes news this week with
her secret
Hawaiian wedding to actor Nicolas Cage. Combined searches for the
two
newlyweds put their nuptials at #42 on this week's list. Lisa Marie,
of
course, used to be married to Michael Jackson (involuntary shudder).
That means the entire Jackson family is now somewhat related to the
entire
Coppola clan, since Nicolas Cage is Francis Ford Coppola's nephew.
For fun,
see if you can connect Jason Schwartzman (the kid from Rushmore) to
80's R&B
star El DeBarge in six family relationships (answer at end of this
column).
Let's not forget about mom, now, either -- searches for Priscilla
Presley go
up 1600 percent this week.
(EIN note: each week the Lycos Internet search engine group - www.lycos.com
- publishes a list of the Top 50 search terms)

Presidential libraries seek
tourists in theme-park era.Elvis to help.
There is a challenge facing the
nation's 11 presidential libraries--soon to
be 12 with the opening of Bill Clinton's this fall--as they compete
for
visitors at a time when many tourists would rather be riding a
roller-coaster than sifting through presidential archives. And the
Clinton
presidential library has factored Elvis into its equation.
Although Ronald Reagan's death has led to a surge in visitors to his
presidential library, attendance at the nation's presidential
libraries
during the past five years has declined about 13 percent. To reverse
the
trend, libraries are adding attractions, turning to more-aggressive
marketing tactics and leaning on tourist attractions to promote
themselves.
The Reagan library is adding a jet that served as Air Force One
while Reagan
was in office. The library also envisions tour packages that could
include
stops at Disneyland and Sea World along with a trip to the Reagan
and Nixon
libraries.
Clinton Presidential Library officials in Little Rock, Ark., plan on
marketing the site with area attractions such as Elvis Presley's
Graceland,
two hours away in Memphis. Visitors also will be able to see
Clinton's
collection of Elvis memorabilia. "For all the libraries,
tourism depends on
how the institutions are promoted," said Jay Hakes, director of
the Jimmy
Carter Library in Atlanta. "Across the board, we need to be
more
aggressive."
The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library has not needed any intense
marketing
efforts this summer. More than 110,000 visitors have poured into the
complex
northwest of Los Angeles since the facility reopened June 14 after a
weeklong memorial to the late president. That is more than half the
attendance that the most popular library--Lyndon Johnson's in
Austin,
Texas--sees in an entire year.
The Reagan library, which had had a 31 percent drop in visitors
until the
former president's death, expects to log an unprecedented 400,000
visitors
by the end of the year. The goal of the libraries is the same: to
keep the
past fresh. Their strategies include rotating exhibits, having
speakers and
educational series and offering school tours.
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park has placed an
emphasis
on tourism. In addition to the Graceland marketing and Clinton's
Elvis
keepsakes, the $165 million library there will showcase an exhibit
on the
first family's White House pets--cat Socks and dog Buddy.
Also on display will be Mickey Mantle's rookie baseball card, which
was a
gift for the president. Presidential items will also be on display,
including an exhibit on his impeachment

Closing Night Sept 1973:
Why it is an essential purchase!
The next FTD has been announced as a soundboard from Elvis' Closing
Night
show in Las Vegas, September 1973. Although this concert has been
available
previously on bootleg, via a poor audience recording, at last the
Soundboard
is being released.
The discovery of this was announced via an EIN interview with Elvis
aficionado, Arjan Deelen, back in March 2002. He said at the time,
"There is
a soundboard from the closing show. A few tracks were released on
bootleg a
couple of years ago. For me, it's at No.1 on the list of soundboards
that
should be released, simply because it's such a remarkable show."
At the time Deelen and Dutch photographer, Laurens van Houten, were
producing the fabulous book 'Caught In A Trap' that focussed on the
September 1973 shows. An absolute must for any Elvis fan (see EIN
review) it
contained some astounding unreleased photos.
FTD have sensibly decided to use some of these photos on the digi-pack
cover
of the new CD. The cover has not been finalised (the front cover on
websites
is just a mock-up) but two of the photos that are being used, shown
here,
perfectly capture Elvis' mood on the night.
Any Elvis Opening or Closing performance usually captured Elvis in a
fiery
and energetic mood, with the common addition of extra and rare songs.
This
night was no different but with the added tension of Elvis being in a
bad
mood with the Hilton Hotel who had been nasty to an employee, Mario, who
Elvis had befriended. However Elvis was also in a playful mood since it
was
the end of another 58 routine showroom performances.
Elvis was looking forward to his own Vegas holiday with Linda Thompson -
Tom
Jones was also in town - and Elvis was about to have five months off
without
touring.
Because of his contradiction in moods the concert is one of Elvis' most
fascinating performances of all-time.
He arrived on stage with a monkey strapped onto his back.
He performed 'What Now My Love' while lying in a bed on-stage.
He determinedly sang the lyrics of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' while
the
band played 'Suspicious Minds' and did an outstandingly crazy version of
'Fever'.
He showed his anger with an X-rated version of 'Love Me Tender' singing,
"To
hell with the whole Hilton Hotel, and screw the showroom too."!
However Elvis also showed his love & inspiration, performing
stunning
versions of 'My Boy', 'How Great Thou Art', 'The First Time I Ever Saw
Your
Face', and a beautiful 'Softly As I Leave You' as well as a rockin'
'Mystery
Train'. (Note - on the CD we also get the added bonus of a rare live
'Trouble' from the Dinner Show.)
At the end of this amazing drama-packed show Elvis says, "I know we
kid a
lot and have fun and everything - but we really love to sing, play music
and
entertain people. As long as I can do that, I'll be a happy old
sonofabitch"!!
After the wrap party Elvis, who was getting more & more annoyed by
The
Colonel's management style, confronted the old man - and in the presence
of
the Memphis Mafia! Elvis, bristling with anger, shouted at Colonel
Parker
eventually telling him that he was fired! Parker responded with,
"You can't
fire me, I quit".
For 2 weeks Elvis then considered going with new management, like Jerry
Weintraub, but unfortunately The Colonel's threat of massive monetary
claims
against Elvis scared Vernon, (who was Elvis' accountant).
In the end the break-up was resolved and 2 weeks later Elvis went back
to
The Colonel, with the new potential challenges of Elvis touring overseas
therefore being lost forever. Had Elvis employed a proper accountant,
who
could have handled Colonel Parker's threats, things might have been
different.
Had Elvis hired new management things certainly would have been
different.
Whether these might have pulled Elvis out of his self-destructive path,
sadly we will never know.
This release will surely be one of FTD's most important and when
combined
with the excellent photos of the performance, via the book 'Caught in A
Trap', Elvis fans can truly experience the whole event.

for failing to include any black
artists on its series of commemorative rock 'n' roll cans.

component
of the promotion appropriately," the company said in a statement

Man Claims Elvis Is His Dad.
A Michigan man has hired an Alabama
attorney to help him prove he is the
illegitimate son of Elvis Presley, a Tennessee newspaper reported
Thursday.
Get ready, because geography isn't the only confusing element in this
story.
It started in Jackson, Tenn., where Tim Farrell said his mother admitted
on
her deathbed that she had sex on a beach with Elvis in 1954 and, indeed,
he
was the son of the King, the Sun said.
Farrell, 49, and now a resident of Jackson, Mich., told the newspaper
all he
wants is the Presley estate to agree to a DNA test. His half-sister,
Regina
Holland of Rogersville, Ala., is convinced her mother was telling the
truth
is leading the charge, the Sun said. "I know my mother didn't
lie," she
said.
Farrell has hired Steve Baccus, a Tuscumbia, Ala., attorney who said he
agreed to take the case because, "I thought this guy was in need of
some
help." Baccus said Farrell and Holland are not after any money or
any
portion of Lisa Marie Presley's estate. "They just want to know the
truth,
that's all," he said.
A spokesman for Elvis Presley Enterprises, which handles the estate,
said no
one had any comment on the claim or the DNA request "at this
point."

New Brazillian Book.

In Brazil a new book has been released.
The author is journalist and Elvis
fan Odair Braz Junior. The book is released for the 50th anniversary of
Rock
'n' Roll. This book of almost 100 pages tells the basic biography of
Elvis
including commentaries for more than 60 albums. In the last pages of the
booklet there's a list of Elvis best web sites in the net.
According to the author it is "just about his music: when he
recorded his
songs, the way he used to work at the studio, the musicians who played
with
him, his shows etc. It is a musical biography about Elvis and when I
write
about his life is through a musical point of view. Of course this kind
of
history is in another books but my book is aimed for young readers who
never
read anything about Elvis. Here in Brazil there aren't a lot of books
about
him and I believe that I tell a lot of things that young readers don't
know
about him."

Elvis On Las Vegas Walk Of Fame?
Within a year, tourists might be able to
stroll down a "walk of fame" on the
Las Vegas Strip. The Clark County Commission approved the idea today --
after the head of a Palm Springs, California company said he expects to
be
able to embed as many as 100 stars' names in the sidewalks. "As a
board we
believe in recognizing the talents of those who have contributed
significantly to the tremendous success of Southern Nevada," said
Commissioner Rory Reid. "What better way to do that than by
allowing our
millions of visitors, who walk the Strip each year, to see the names of
those important people displayed so prominently. "
No word yet who the first honorees might be. But it's a good bet that
Elvis
Presley and members of the Rat Pack will get a vote.

Miller's Rock 'N' Roll Cans Lack
Color.
A Miller Brewing promotion celebrating
the "50th Anniversary of Rock 'n'
Roll" has Rolling Stone cover shots of Elvis Presley, Blondie and
others on
eight commemorative beer cans. What's missing is a black artist
according to
Robert Thompson, a professor of pop culture at Syracuse University, said
the
absence is "beyond conspicuous" since black artists often are
credited with
inventing rock 'n' roll.
Gary Armstrong, chief marketing officer for Rolling Stone publisher
Wenner
Media, said race wasn't a consideration when choosing the artists.
"We
didn't even consciously think pro or con, the same way that the only
woman
on there is Blondie. We just went with the people that we thought were
appropriate," he said. "We went through (the covers) and said
these people
we don't think are appropriate or wouldn't appeal to Miller
drinkers."Armstrong noted Rolling Stone wasn't around for the birth
of rock
'n' roll - it was first published in 1967 - when many formative black
artists of the genre emerged. And many artists who appeared on covers
balked
at being associated with a promotion involving alcohol, he said.

World's First Elvis Coin And Stamp
Collection.

Below a press release from Morgan Mint on
their coin and stamp collection
honoring the 50th anniversary of "That's All Right."
Memphis Tennesee, August 15, 2004 -- Fifty years ago in 1954, Elvis
Presley
dared to rock. He recorded his first single release, "That's All
Right," for
the Sun Records label in Memphis. It marked the birth of Rock 'n' Roll
and
the start of Elvis' amazing career.
Today, during a star-studded celebration at Elvis' Graceland mansion in
Memphis, collectors were finally able to see the highly anticipated coin
and
stamp collection honoring the 50th anniversary of "That's All
Right." It is
the world's first official coin and stamp collection honoring a pivotal
event in Elvis' amazing career.
M Moshe Malamud, President of the Morgan Mint, unveiled the collection.
It
consists of official legal tender postage stamp sheets from the
governments
of Grenada and The Gambia, as well as a genuine U.S. Silver Dollar that
has
been officially colorized by the Morgan Mint. The collection is
authorized
by the issuing governments, Graceland and Elvis Presley Enterprises.
Each sheet of official legal tender stamps features classic images of
Elvis.
The stamps are legal for postage in the nations of issue and are
recognized
by every postal authority in the world, including the United States.
Unlike
the Elvis stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service over a decade ago,
however, these stamps are limited editions. Just a fraction of the stamp
sheets have been set aside for this unique collection.
The U.S. Silver Dollar was issued by the United States Mint under an Act
of
Congress and features a rare archival image of Elvis, together with the
caption "He Dared to Rock" and Elvis' official facsimile
signature. The coin
contains one full ounce of pure silver.
Based on the overwhelming popularity of Elvis Presley memorabilia,
Malamud
expects this collection to sell out quickly. "The U.S. Elvis stamp
was the
best-selling commemorative in history," said Malamud, "but
this 50th
anniversary collection is being released in a shockingly small edition
of
just thousands. I encourage all collectors to get theirs early, before
they
sell out."
The stamps and coins release was organized by the Inter-Governmental
Philatelic Corp. (IGPC), the world's largest pos
