Elvis couple's
baby name dilemma.
A Belgian couple whose 15 children's
names are linked to Elvis Presley say
they cannot think of a name for their 16th child.
Jean-Pierre and Carine Antheunis, from Gent in Belgium, are lifelong
Elvis
fans and their children's names include Elvis, Priscilla, Dakota and
Tennessee.
But the pair have said they don't know what to call their new baby
boy.
"If it had been a girl we would have called her Linda. Elvis
once had a
lover with that name," said Jean-Pierre.
"But we have run out of ideas for a boy."
They are now thinking of calling him Ohio: "There's no
connection with
Elvis, but it's in America," he added.
Speaking to daily newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, Jean-Pierre said
they would
not need to worry about finding more names in the future, as Ohio
would be
their last.
"My wife is now 40 and we have decided to stop there. Sixteen
children are
enough for us," he said.

ELVIS RADIO
Soon To Be On The Air Via Satellite.

SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO AND GRACELAND CREATE ALL-ELVIS PRESLEY RADIO
CHANNEL
"Elvis was a great fan of all
new technologies in entertainment and
communication. He was always the first person to get the latest
gadgetry.
I'm sure Elvis would have been SIRIUS Satellite Radio's first
subscriber and
would have had their rock, gospel and country programming going
non-stop at
home and on the road. It's such a great way to receive one's
favorite music
and I know he'd be beaming with pride at having his very own
station." -
Priscilla Presley
NEW YORK - June 28, 2004 - SIRIUS (NASDAQ: SIRI), the premium
satellite
radio provider known for delivering the very best in commercial-free
music
and sports programming to cars and homes across the country, today
announced
the launch of Elvis Radio, a 24/7 all-Elvis Presley® radio channel.
All day,
every day, Elvis Radio will celebrate "The King of Rock 'n'
Roll®" by airing
the entire spectrum of his career: His extensive catalog of hit
singles ...
the rarities ... the 'B' sides ... the 'Sun' years . the movie
soundtracks
... and his wonderful concerts. Elvis Radio will be hosted daily by
SIRIUS
DJs from a specially designed studio in the Plaza at Graceland,
Elvis'
Memphis, TN home.
Elvis Radio will debut July 2 on SIRIUS with a spectacular live
broadcast
from Memphis, TN. Elvis fans from around the world are expected at
Graceland
and the Sun Studio during the Fourth of July weekend to celebrate
the 50th
anniversary of Elvis' first single, "That's All Right."
"Elvis Presley was a true pioneer, a man of many firsts in our
world," said
Jack Soden, President & CEO of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.
"It seems
natural for Elvis to be the first artist to have a satellite radio
station
exclusively devoted to his work. It's especially fitting that the
launch of
Elvis Radio happens to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the
beginning
of his career. What a great way to celebrate!"
Scott Greenstein, President of Entertainment and Sports, SIRIUS,
said,
"Fifty years after his first single, Elvis Presley still casts
a spell over
music lovers, songwriters and musicians everywhere; this is
evidenced by the
throngs of visitors to Graceland and the millions who buy his
records each
year. SIRIUS is committed to providing unique and innovative content
to our
subscribers that they can't get anywhere else - Elvis Radio is yet
another
example of that commitment."
The partnership between SIRIUS and Elvis Presley Enterprises calls
for
SIRIUS radios to be sold at Graceland gift shops and on Elvis.com.
Elvis
Radio will be available in all guest rooms at Memphis' Heartbreak
Hotel and
will play throughout the day in the public areas at Graceland.
SIRIUS and
Elvis Radio will be promoted on Elvis.com, to Elvis fan clubs and to
Elvis
e-mail lists.
"No artist in the history of recorded music made an impact on
rock 'n' roll
as Elvis did," said Steve Blatter, Vice President of Music
Programming,
SIRIUS. "Through his music, Elvis changed America and the
world. We're proud
to have worked closely with the Elvis estate to create Elvis
Radio."
SIRIUS consultant Walter Sabo, who initiated the discussions for
Elvis Radio
said, "Rock radio exists because of Elvis - yet Elvis Presley's
music can't
be heard on very many radio stations anymore. Today, Elvis fans -
and that's
all of us - can hear Elvis, uncensored, from the hips up and down,
on
SIRIUS."

"The King of Rock'n'Roll is back in the building for his fourth

It's Memphis, 1965. An increasingly withdrawn Elvis passes his

worry, and so is
his famously hucksterish manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Things only get worse when the King finds out that someone has been

that
Colonel Tom's been paying off their parents to keep the scandal out

HMV UK
Celebrate 50th Anniversary Of Rock and Roll.

Release date: 5-7-2004 Catalogue
Number: 82876619211
Side A: 1 That's All Right Side B : 2. Blue Moon Of
Kentucky
A press release from HMV celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rock
and Roll.
A 10-inch vinyl limited edition of Elvis Presley's That's All Right
- the
record that many believe launched rock 'n' roll 50 years ago - is
available
exclusively at HMV's 180-plus stores in the UK and Ireland and
through its
online site at HMV.co.uk on Monday 5th July 2004.
That date is the precise 50th anniversary of Elvis recording the
single at
the Sun Studios in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday 5th
July
1954. That's All Right changed the world - John Lennon would later
famously
remark that "before Elvis there was nothing" - but has
remarkably never been
released as a single in the UK.
HMV's 10-inch vinyl version is almost certain to become a
collectors' item.
Only 5000, individually numbered, copies are being pressed and
there's every
chance they will be sold out on the day of release - many the 1000
available
on
HMV.co.uk, for example, have already been accounted for through
customer
pre-orders.
Uniquely, the single appears on the original Sun Records - the small
independent label that released the record in America 50 years ago -
and
features the original b-side, Blue Moon of Kentucky.
Following last year's huge hit with 'A Little Less Conversation'
this early
public demand for the single suggests that Elvis may well be in line
for
further chart success, and he may even extend his record of UK
number ones
to 19 - pulling two ahead of the Beatles on 17 and five in front of
Cliff
Richard, who has 14.
Says Steve Gallant, HMV Product Director: "Given the enduring
appeal of
Elvis - and the significance of his first recording - we're sure
there is
going to be enormous demand for this special edition. Our advice,
therefore,
is to get to the stores early - because once we've sold out, this
item will
be deleted and there'll be no other way of getting it.
"From HMV's perspective, this release is also very much part of
our
heritage. As the country's oldest music retailer - HMV opened for
business
in 1921 - we're the only one to have sold every Elvis record as they
were
released in the UK. We should also add that when Elvis's records
were first
released in the UK - in 1956 - they originally appeared on the HMV
label."
The single's release comes as part of a global party to celebrate
the birth
of rock 'n' roll. At 5.00 pm (BST) on 5th July, for instance, radio
stations
around the world will be encouraged to simultaneously play That's
All Right.
On the same day BMG are also releasing:
A three-track CD single of That's All Right, featuring the original
Blue
Moon of Kentucky b-side plus an alternative take of That's All
Right.
The Elvis at Sun album, featuring all the tracks Elvis recorded
during his
two years with the legendary label. This includes all five singles
plus rare
alternate takes.
The Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD, featuring the
two
complete jam sessions and Elvis's two solo concerts that originally
comprised his historic Comeback special. These four shows have never
been
released in their entirety.
The Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD, a two disc set
featuring
all the performance material shot for Elvis's 1973 Aloha from Hawaii
television show - at the time the world's biggest TV event with a
1.5
billion audience across 40 countries
The Kings of Rock 'n Roll album featuring Elvis together with
contributions
from such legends as Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Little
Richard, .Cliff Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Shreveport sets
50th anniversary Elvis bash.
Walk into Shreveport's Municipal
Auditorium and you can almost hear the
rhythmic thrum of guitars, the screams of teenagers swooning over
the latest
heart throb -- Elvis. And you don't need to ask Elvis who?
On Oct. 15, 1954, 19-year-old Elvis Presley waited his turn to
appear in
front of an audience on a nationally telecast radio show -- the
Louisiana
Hayride. It was his first career performance, the beginning of a
dramatic
change in how the world viewed music and entertainment.
Rock music and memories will be the focus of a special Oct. 16
concert in
the auditorium when Shreveport salutes Elvis, the king of rock and
roll,
during a 50th anniversary celebration.
Performing will be Elvis' friends. The TCB Band, including
Shreveport's
native son and internationally acclaimed guitarist, James Burton,
will join
original Hayride drummer DJ Fontana, the Jordanaires and Terry Mike
Jeffey
for the night.
The Friends of the Municipal Auditorium have organized the concert
bash.
Tickets go on sale Monday, July 12. Prices are $25, $35 and $45.
Groups of
15 or more can purchase tickets for $20 per person. For information,
visit
the Friends of the Municipal Auditorium Web site,
http://www.stageofstars.com
or call the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra
office, 318-227-8863.
Proceeds from the concert will go to help the Friends of the
Municipal
breathe life back into the historic building with projects that
include
restoration, museum exhibits, guided tours and educational programs.
Designed by architect Samuel Weiner and built in the 1920s, the
building is
considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco construction in
Louisiana.
It has hosted circuses, concerts, sporting events, plays and
political
rallys. In 1954 when Elvis first appeared on its stage, the
auditorium also
saw appearances by the St. Louis Symphony and Houston Symphony.
The Hayride, or "Cradle to the Stars" as it was often
called, was the
catalyst for not just Elvis' career. The weekly radio program on
Shreveport's KWKH began April 3, 1948. Admission was 30 cents or 60
cents,
including tax. In its first 10 years, the Hayride launched the
careers of
Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, Faron Young, Slim Whitman, Johnny
Horton, Johnny
Cash, George Jones, Bob Luman and many others.
The auditorium continues to be a popular site for special events
because of
its size and proximity to I-20 and I-49. And it's address has been
re-named
-- 705 Elvis Presley Avenue. Some of the history is on display at
the Stage
of Stars Museum, which opened this summer in the Municipal
Audi-torium. The
museum's regular Saturday hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. A tour, including
a walk
across the "stage of stars," takes about 30 minutes.
Groups can schedule tours anytime by contacting the

Director of
Elvis' '68 comeback special talks about The King.
Steve Binder had the guts to tell
Elvis Presley his career was in the toilet
and scored a rare victory in a power struggle with the singer's
domineering
manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker.
Then Binder went out, turned a brainstorm into a jam session and
directed
the TV special that put the spark back in Elvis and restored him to
greatness.
That was in June 1968. Fast-forward 36 years, when a deluxe
seven-hour DVD
edition of Binder's Elvis show was released this week as part of a
celebration of an Elvis milestone.
July 5 marks the 50th anniversary of that 1954 day that Elvis walked
into
Sun Studios in Memphis, Tenn., to cut his first record, "That's
All Right."
Many consider that moment to be the birth of rock 'n' roll, though
others
trace rock's origins back further.
A DVD of a 1973 Elvis Hawaii special and two CDs of historic music
from
Elvis and others also were released Tuesday.
Suddenly, with the big 5-0 milestone looming, many are talkin' Elvis
again.
Binder has loads of memories from working with The King all those
years ago
-- vivid, fond, funny and otherwise.
"If someone had told me back then that I would be getting
interviewed in
2004 about the Elvis special we did, I would have said, 'No way,'
" Binder,
now 62, said from a couch in his Mandalay Bay, Calif., townhouse
recently.
After the 1968 special, Elvis had a new spotlight and hit Vegas
shows almost
up until his death in 1977 at age 42.
Parker died in 1997 at age 87. Binder has had a long career as
director and
producer. But for a few memorable weeks in 1968, they were together,
making
a little magic and history.
The original show, called simply "Elvis," aired on NBC on
Dec. 3, 1968. If
Parker had had his way, it likely would have been just another show
with a
celebrity singing Christmas chestnuts, probably soon forgotten. But
in
Binder's hands, and with The King's backing, it became legendary.
Binder got the idea to have Elvis and friends jam onstage,
performing his
hits and interacting with the crowd -- a forerunner of the so-called
"Unplugged" concept long before MTV even existed. He had
Elvis do numbers
with a full orchestra as well.
What they caught was Elvis on fire, dressed in a tight black leather
suit
for the jam sessions, oozing charisma, energy and sexuality. He was
back.
Almost four decades later, the show still resonates in many places,
including at Elvis' sprawling Graceland complex in Memphis.
"It was career salvation," said Todd Morgan, director of
media and creative
development for Elvis Presley Enterprises there and also one of the
producers of the new DVD on the 1968 show.
"Of course, who could possibly know what would have happened if
the TV
special hadn't come along. Maybe there would have been another way
to reboot
his career. But who knows?"
Binder grew up in Los Angeles, went to film school at the University
of
Southern California and did radio during an ensuing Army stint.
Later, he
landed a job on a New York-based music show called
"Hullabaloo" and then
directed TV specials for Leslie Uggams, and another with Petula
Clark and
Harry Belafonte.
After the Clark-Belafonte special, Binder got a call from Bob
Finkel, an
executive producer at NBC. Parker, Finkel told him, had struck a
deal with
the network to do an Elvis special. Finkel wanted Binder to direct
and
co-produce it. Binder was 26.
"I was so young," Binder said. "I couldn't believe
all this was happening."
Binder agreed to a meeting with Elvis. The two hit it off, even
though
Binder was frank with The King.
"Basically, I told him I thought his career was in the
toilet," Binder said.
Binder pitched a rough outline for the show; Elvis liked it. They
agreed
that Elvis would go off to Hawaii to get in shape for the special.
They
started putting the show together in June 1968.
Binder was determined to make the suave Elvis and his music the
show's
focus. Parker had other ideas: He wanted the show to be Elvis doing
20
Christmas songs, with no talking between numbers.
Every night after rehearsals and tapings, Binder noticed that Elvis
would go
to his dressing room and jam away with old friends. They would sing,
play
and joke.
"I said: 'Wait a minute, this is history. I want to film this,'
" Binder
said. "And Elvis had a great sense of humor; I was determined
to get that in
there."
Parker at first said no to taping in the dressing room but later
relented on
the idea as long as they did it on the studio stage. So the
jam-session
portion of the show was born.
"I was certainly fascinated by Elvis, but truthfully, I was not
into his
music," Binder said. "I liked the West Coast sound, the
Beach Boys and such.
On the other hand, when I saw him perform through my camera lens, I
accepted
him for how great he really was."
"The cool part for me seeing it through the lens was seeing him
visually
build his confidence," Binder said. "When he realized they
(the studio
audience) loved him, he simply could not give them enough."
Once taping was over, Parker found out about the show's thrust and
threatened to pull out of the project unless NBC included at least
one
Christmas song. Fortunately, Binder said, during one improv session
Elvis
had sung "Blue Christmas" and he had it on tape, so he
agreed to throw that
in. Binder edited the show down, and showed Elvis the final product.
The
King, he said, was pleased with it.
Parker offered Binder the directorial helm of Elvis' next movie,
1969's
"Charro," but later reneged on it when they got into a
dispute over music
royalties from the special. Binder and Elvis never spoke again.
Binder would go on to do TV shows involving Mac Davis, Barry
Manilow, Diana
Ross, Patti LaBelle, Michelle Kwan and others. The Elvis special, he
said,
taught him that sometimes you have to stick to your guns.
"I can't tell you how many times I've been told, 'You'll never
get work in
this town again.' But I've had steady work for four decades."

Message From
BMG: Aloha Disc 1 Technical Glitch.

What's the story on the Aloha Disc 1
technical glitch we're hearing
about for PAL discs distributed outside North America?
Message from BMG:
There is a glitch in the DVD in countries which use the
PAL format. The segment is 17 minutes of footage where the crowd is
waiting for Elvis to arrive by helicopter. At exactly 4:59 there is
an
"end code" which causes the picture to jump to the next
Chapter
(Rehearsal Concert). This is the glitch on the DVD.
All of the footage is actually there. You can see it by
hitting the "skip" button on your remote at 4:58 and that
will make the
program jump over the "end code" and allow the arrival
footage to
continue. At the end of the 17 minutes you must return to the main
menu
to proceed with Chapter 2.
Please note at 4:59 where the glitch occurs, Elvis has
not arrived yet. The shot is actually of a lamp post. If you follow
this
procedure you will not miss any Elvis footage!
We apologize for any inconvenience.
Note: Latest news - Hopefully in two weeks the Aloha
Deluxe-set will be
available without this error.
More details from BMG soon on this matter.

Q & A: 1st
Annual Special Edition Cameo Girl Collectible Vase.

We've received a lot of questions
about the upcoming limited run on the
Special Edition Cameo Girl and wanted to share the answers here.
Don't
forget, you must order yours before July 30.
Q: What are Cameo Girls?
A: Cameo Girls is a collection of figural head vases that portrays
ten
beautiful and fashionable ladies, and depicts the fascinating roles
they've
played throughout some of history's most memorable moments and eras.
Each
lady has her own ageless personality, and she represents uniquely
historical
periods and stories that are complemented by elaborately detailed
costuming,
hairstyle, and impeccable makeup and accessories. Judith, who is
graceful,
well brought up and a little pampered takes us back to Valentine's
Day in
1875, recalls the glamour of Hollywood in the 30's, and enjoys life,
latte,
and the dot.com era in 2001. Eve is a classic beauty and a little
reserved,
but she does have a rebellious streak, like the night she dances
with
bootleggers in the 20's and played folk music on a 12-string guitar
in the
70's. Celeste, who is of African American descent, is elegant and
artistic.
In the 20's she became a star of musical revues under the bright
lights of
Harlem, and ventured on to Broadway acclaim in 1987. Abigail, who
portrays
our 50's teen, has been a WWII nurse, the belle of the Masquerade
ball in
1780, and the grand lady in 1911's Easter Parade. Six other ladies;
Angeline, Clarissa, Eloise, Sasha, Blythe, and Martina make up the
rest of
the Cameo Girls collection. Together the ladies define the greatest
moments
of history in 87 intriguingly beautiful designs.

Q: What makes this piece so special?
A: Beyond the fact that it commemorates Elvis' first recording and
the 50th
Anniversary of Rock and Roll, Cameo Girls distinguish themselves
from other
head vases in the extremely high quality seen in their intricate
sculpting
detail, exquisite handpainting, and authentic and elaborate
costuming for
the eras they represent. Lady head vases were originally popular in
the
1950's when florists used them to promote flower sales. They were
originally
ceramic and lacking in great detail. Today's Cameo Girls lady vase
uses a
reliable material that retains much of the original sculpting
detail because it doesn't have to be fired.
Q: Are Cameo Girls considered a real collectible?
A: Yes! In only a few short years, the interest in the collection
generates
new excitement with every introduction. Cameo Girls collectors are a
passionate group that eagerly await the next arrivals to see what
new
adventures and eras the ladies are going to represent. Many order
sight
unseen knowing they won't be disappointed. Collectors say,
"It's like
waiting to relive history," through each beautiful and
captivating lady.
Even collectors of the earlier vintage vases are recognizing the
artistry in
these new lady vases. Some avid collectors favor the entire
collection,
while others find it fascinating to collect only certain ladies.
Q: Do Cameo Girls appreciate in value?
A: Yes, again. Traditionally most Cameo Girls will sell or resell
for 2 to 3
times their original price. However, Cameo Girls have sold on Ebay
for
upwards of $800. Most recently, Abigail 1953 sold for $459 and
Celeste 1987
for $319. In the past month, another 50 designs have sold at
considerable
increases over their original price. Some other Internet websites
devoted
entirely to lady head vases, also offer online auctions for
collectors.
Q: Have Cameo Girls ever sold on QVC?
A: Yes, Cameo Girls have sold on QVC shopping channel, and sold very
quickly. During the first airing, which offered approximately 500
pieces of
a single Cameo Girl design, the featured piece was on the air less
than a
minute and a half before selling out. For the second airing, two
Cameo Girls
designs were featured. Approximately 1000 pieces completely sold out
within
six to eight minutes. The Cameo Girls offered in the sale were
limited
edition collectible pieces from the Cameo Girls collection, but they
sold,
not only for collectible value and distinction, but as home decor
and accent
pieces, as well.
Q: Why would I want "Abigail 1954 - Let's Rock?"
A: Abigail 1954 is one of those special collectible pieces, that
because of
its relevance to Elvis and Rock and Roll's 50th Anniversary, tends
to
generate even more excitement in the collectible community. It also
marks
the first time Cameo Girls has ever introduced a "special
edition" piece.
Typically, any collectible design associated with clubs,
memberships, first
editions, and special events appreciate more rapidly because they
become
increasingly more difficult to find as interest in the collection
grows.
Q: Where can I find other Cameo Girls?
A: The Cameo Girls collection is available at many fine gift and
collectibles stores nationwide, as well as internet sites that
specialize in
lady head vases. A search of the Internet using Cameo Girls or Lady
Head
Vases should bring up several interesting websites. Some of these
sites
offer newsletters, buy and sell opportunities, and information on
lady vase
shows and conventions.

Todd Morgan In
ICE Magazine.
This interview is from the second
update from ICE magazine publisher Pete
Howard. A third mailing will go out later.
In the current issue of ICE, we have a long article on BMG
Heritage's
upcoming Elvis Presley titles: a single CD called Elvis at Sun and
two
multi-disc DVD sets, Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition
DVD and
Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD.
In the article, we interviewed both Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, who
produced the
new Sun disc, and Todd Morgan of Elvis Presley Enterprises, who
worked on
the two DVD sets. In both cases, they had much more to say than we
had room
to print, so wefre delightfully making up for that here in the
Daily News
Flash. Last Friday, we had Jorgensen talking about Elvis at Sun;
this week,
we're presenting overflow from Todd Morgan's interview about the
DVDs. In
all cases, none of these quotes made it into the ICE article.
Naturally, once the conversation got going, Morgan had plenty of
anecdotes
about what he'd been observing the last few months. And the good
news is,
with the '68 Comeback Special, fans are going to see nearly
everything he
did... including four intimate shows in front of a tiny audience,
two
performed with Elvis sitting down, two with him standing up.
"One thing that's really funny, "Morgan tells ICE,"
is that in the first
stand-up, Elvis does this killer version of 'Blue Suede Shoes.' It
seems
that the band is a little off, and he can't get 'em right. He's
smiling,
it's very charming... and then there comes a point where he can't
get them
to stop! [laughter] He's out there workin' his ass off, and then he
just
kind of surrenders to it. You just have to see it.
"As an illustration of how complete we're being, at the end of
the '68 show
the credits roll... and he's up in the red Elvis letters playing
guitar. You
get the original broadcast version of the show, which has the
rolling
credits, but... you also get the footage that they shot for the
credits
rolling, without the credits. We really mean comprehensive!
"Another thing that was very moving was to watch all three
takes of 'If I
Can Dream.' They used the third one for the TV special. To watch the
process
of him getting to that... the first one was wonderful; the next one
was at
another level. And then he gets to the one that [made it]. That is
probably
my single favorite vocal performance of his career."
Although the '68 Comeback Special has been released in several forms
before
- or part of it, we should say - interestingly, Morgan and the other
two
producers decided not to view them first for reference.
"We went back to the original tapes and started from
scratch," he says, "and
we didn't really look at anything that had been done before; we just
went
with completely fresh eyes. We simply went in there with the
original tapes,
transferred to digital, and started from the top. We put our choices
up on
the screens in the editing bay, and discussed it moment-by-moment,
what
angle to go to. We worked with a marvelous editor and co-producer
[Ray Hovey
and Gary Miller], so it's beautifully done, but it's got a raw
quality to
it.
"Early in the process we developed this term: 'maximum
Elvisness.' It means
if your choices are a shaky shot of Elvis which is great but the
cameraman
wasn't quite locked down, or a lame audience shot, we went with the
shaky
Elvis shot.
"I can remember there in the editing bay, pushing my chair back
several
times during this process, just thinking, 'My God... was anybody
ever that
great, that beautiful, that charismatic, that talented?' And the
answer is,
'No.'"
Morgan also had a cute little anecdote that only tape archivists can
appreciate: "In those days, they'd recycle tape a lot; we found
with '68,
some of our tapes had Elvis recorded over [Rowan & Martin's]
Laugh-In. When
Elvis runs out on some of our tapes, you pick up some Laugh-In stuff
[laughing]!"
That's all for today; thanks for stopping by. The third and final
part of
our Elvis DailyNews Flash will run later this week.

he was
famous, Elvis's personal style, like his music, had such a direct
impact on
his audience that it continues to permeate our world to this day.
With Elvis
Presley: The Man. The Life. The Legend. (Atria Books), Pamela Clarke
Keogh
compellingly examines Elvis's life and style to reveal the generous,
complex, spiritual man behind the fourteen-carat gold sunglasses and
answers
the question "why Elvis matters."
From his modest beginnings in a two-room house to his meteoric rise
to fame,
Elvis Presley is the story of one man's life. An American story, it
tells of
a man, a boy, really, born poor in Tupelo, Mississippi. But he could
do one
thing: he could sing to break your heart.
Elvis was the first. Before the Beatles, before the Rolling Stones,
before
U2, before Eminem, there was Elvis. The original Slim Shady, he was
black
and white, rhythm and country, hot and cool. His appearance on Ed
Sullivan
ripped the 1950's in half, and America was never the same. In the
beginning,
Elvis did not understand the audience's ferocious response to him.
But he
quickly learned to harness it, toying with his screaming fans like a
lover.
Onstage, something came over him. He was a different person - freer,
able to
express himself, musically articulate as he never was in
conversation.
People loved him and he gave their love back to them in kind.
The first modern superstar, Elvis was almost pure style. Tolstoy
believed
that one way to judge art was if it got a response - either good or
bad.
Everything about Elvis was provocative. His clothes, his hair, the
way he
sang, the way he moved on stage, his half kidding sneer. Adults,
church
leaders, the great dull morass that makes up acceptable society
considered
Elvis a joke but Leonard Bernstein saw his impact: "Elvis
Presley is the
greatest cultural force in the Twentieth Century," he
proclaimed. "He
introduced the beat to everything and he changed everything - music,
language, clothes. It's a whole new social revolution - the Sixties
came
from it."
In addition to his extraordinary talent, physical beauty and the
sheer fun
of being the biggest entertainer in the world, Elvis Presley: The
Man. The
Life. The Legend. explores the shadows of Presley's life - which
were as
necessary to his stardom as the spotlight. While exploring his
ambition,
desire, fame, life on the road, women and money, Elvis Presley: The
Man. The
Life. The Legend. also examines the cost of being an artist in
today's
society.
Written with the assistance of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Elvis
Presley: The
Man. The Life. The Legend. draws on extensive research and
interviews with
Presley friends and family, including Priscilla Presley, Joe
Esposito, Jerry
Schilling, Larry Geller, Bernard Lansky, famed Hollywood
photographer Bob
Willoughby and designer Bill Belew. Granted access to the Graceland
archives, Keogh culled thousands of images to choose the over 100
color and
black and white photographs in the book, many of which have rarely
been seen
before.
In Elvis Presley: The Man. The Life. The Legend. Keogh introduces
readers to
the distinct Elvises that emerged throughout his career, complete
with
fascinating insights into his life and times. The result is both an
entertaining exploration of the King of Rock and Roll and a timely,
provocative celebration of what Presley means to America today. It
is a book
no fan - or future fan - should be without.

EBONY'S DOUBLE:
Last Horse Elvis Brought To Graceland.

Elvis' last horse keeps gait at
Graceland.
Anything having to do with Elvis is popular and loved the world
over.
His music, his home, his cars, his outfits, nothing escapes adoring
fans.
Yet it is the horses in the pasture that intrigue so many of the
visitors to
Graceland.
Objects may paint the picture of a man, but a horse can reflect a
man's
being, somehow capturing spirit and soul.
However only one horse remains since Elvis' death August 16, 1977:
EBONY'S
DOUBLE, a 31 year-old, registered Tennessee Walking Horse, the last
living
horse that he purchased.
EBONY'S DOUBLE resides in the pastures and barn on the property at
Graceland, the home of Elvis, in Memphis, Tenn. He shares his
paddocks with
two other horses, EBONY'S SECRET THREAT and SUN'S REFLECTION.
Together they are on display for all the King's adoring fans,
enjoying the
lush bermuda paddocks behind the mansion.
The horses are cared for with 24 hour a day attention by a staff
specifically assigned to the herd.
The original barn, built by the previous owner Dr. Thomas Moore who
had it
for his show cattle, still stands as the primary working facility
for the
horses. It is kept in immaculate shape: not a cobweb to be found; no
pile
left standing for long.
Each horse has an individual stall with name plate and cooling fans.
They
are bathed often in the summer and vacuumed regularly in the winter.
An alternate section of the barn is like a small arena with an
"open door
policy" for the horses; a haven from inclement whether or to
take a nap in
the shade.
EBONY'S DOUBLE is a picture of age, yet maintained grace; a living
vessel
that is the spirit of Elvis.
"Elvis was fascinated by Walking Horses," says Alene
Alexander, barn
supervisor at Graceland. "He loved to watch them work."
EBONY'S DOUBLE was a two year-old when Elvis first saw him at the
George L.
Lennox farm, near Collierville, home of the renowned CARBON COPY.
EBONY'S DOUBLE captivated Elvis with more than an impressive gait,
however.
As Alene tells the story, he was wearing red leg wraps which against
his
black body was an striking combination for Elvis. So much so, that
Elvis
offered to buy the horse.
The son of 1962 World Champion EBONY MASTERPIECE was delivered to
Graceland
by the Lennox farm without the red leg wraps. Elvis was not certain
that
this horse was the same he had purchased.
"So he had them put the red leg wraps back on," says
Alene. Elvis then knew
this was his horse.
EBONY'S DOUBLE joined many other horses while at Graceland, the herd
reaching as high as twenty.
It seems Elvis could not get enough of horses and the pleasure they
gave
him, especially time he spent riding with friends.
"Elvis bought horses, trucks and trailers for everyone,"
says Alene. "At
that time, that was the thing to have. He was such a generous
man."
In a June 1999 article for EQUUS magazine, Christine Barakat wrote
of Elvis'
horsemanship.
"In the 'Sincerely Elvis' museum, I was captivated by an old
home movie of
Elvis riding in a paddock at Graceland. In fact, I watched the film
many
times. It was clear that Elvis wasn't just a "movie star
cowboy" - he was
actually a very good rider, with kind hands, a secure seat and good
sense of
balance. The museum also displayed the singer's well-used saddles,
bridles
and muddy boots: It was obvious Elvis loved and enjoyed his horses
as much
as I do my own."
"When Elvis learned to ride, he was told he had to cool out his
horse
carefully by walking him," Alene says. "So he'd ride for
15 minutes and then
walk the horse three times as long. Everyone teased him about that,
but he
wanted to be sure the horse was properly cooled."
EBONY'S DOUBLE was never shown in competition, yet, in 1983, he
found
himself on the greatest stage of the Walking Horse world.
Ebony's Double was invited to be officially retired at the Tennessee
Walking
Horse National Celebration in a ceremony usually reserved for horses
earning
world championships.
The trip to Shelbyville was hard on EBONY'S legs and the day of the
ceremony
he was having difficulty finding his gait.
There was a great deal of worry among the contingent, including
Elvis' wife,
Priscilla, who was in attendance for the special ceremony.
Yet, with 40,000 expectant people filling the stands, they knew they
could
not disappoint.
When EBONY'S DOUBLE entered the arena, with Alene up,
"something magical
happened," she says. "He smoothed out and showed
beautifully."
At the Celebration, in memory of Elvis, the Graceland Challenge
Trophy is
presented to the winner of the Junior Walking Horse Championship
Stake.
When Graceland opened to the public in 1982, there were four other
horses:
RISING SUN, a registered Palomino Quarter Horse, was Elvis'
favorite;
MEMPHIS, an unregistered Walking Horse; MORIAH, a Shetland pony
which he
purchased for Lisa Marie to ride; and MARE INGRAM, a mixed-grade bay
horse
which was named, in a turn of "fair play," for Memphis
Mayor Ingram who had
renamed a stretch of Highway 51, "Elvis Presley
Boulevard."
"It is Graceland's policy to always have horses at
Graceland," says Alene.
"Elvis bought Graceland so he could have horses. His first
acquisition was a
pair of mules for his father, Vernon."
Standing with the policy of Graceland, they continue to reflect the
composition of the horses when they pass away.
"When we replace a horse, we try to stay as true to the
bloodlines as
possible."
Such is the case with SUN'S REFLECTION, purchased in 1988 after
RISING SUN
passed in 1986. SUN'S REFLECTION is also a Golden Palomino, not only
related
in bloodline as a cousin, but also purchased from the same man,
Robert Boyd,
who sold Elvis RISING SUN.
"There will always be a Golden Palomino at Graceland,"
states Alene.
There have been numerous other horses at Graceland, which although
unrelated, have been adopted or donated to provide retiring horses a
good
home.
Since all three are getting up in age, "we just don't want to
risk them
being injured by other and younger horses since they are getting so
old."
The pursuit of adoption reflects the compassion Elvis had for
horses, and
even for animals in general, a trait shared equally by Priscilla and
Lisa
Marie.
When Priscilla and Lisa Marie make return trips to Graceland, a
fairly
regular occurrence, the never fail to visit the barn.
"They always come spend time here at the barn," says
Alene, "to pet, brush
and feed the horses."
The barn and horses certainly must serve as a welcome and comforting
haven,
as they must have been for Elvis. A place to provide sanctuary and
pleasure.
The apparent luxury of being a Graceland horse does not depict the
gravity
of caring for an senior horse and the effort put out by an extremely
dedicated staff.
With the opening of Graceland in 1982, Alene Alexander had signed on
to be a
tour guide. When she saw the horses, she immediately put a resume
together
to offer to care for the horses. Being a Walking Horse owner and
having
shown a world champion, MISS GO GIRL, Jack Soden, President and CEO
of Elvis
Presley Enterprises, Inc., did not hesitate to appointed her
Graceland's
stable supervisor.
Her dedication to the horses mirrors the commitment of Graceland to
maintain
the remembrance of Elvis.
"The executive staff has never denied any request concerning
the care of the
horses," Alene reports. "I tell them what I need and I get
it. Their concern
for the horses is without question."
Dr. Susanne Taylor is the "house" vet on call 24 hours a
day. "She is
available to us whenever we need her. Given her experience with
caring for
senior horses we could not ask for better."
Lim Couch served as a farrier for Elvis during his lifetime, and
continues
in that capacity today for Graceland. In addition to keeping the
horses
properly shod, the owner of Mid-South Farrier Supply in Hernando,
Miss.
keeps the stables fully stocked with all their vitamin, nutrition,
hoof
care, and horse grooming supplies.
Senior Associate Cecil Carney is "the mystery employee."
"He is the only employee of Graceland who no one ever
sees," jokes Alene.
Arriving early in the morning and late in the evenings after
Graceland is
closed, the stealthy stable hand's work rarely goes unnoticed.
Without fail,
seven days a week Cecil feeds, cleans, bails hay, and keeps the
pastures
green.
Associate Susan Couch, daughter of Lim, manages the daytime chores,
feeding
and grooming. "She keeps our horses the best they can be
kept."
Susan has been working there for just over a year and came at a
critical
time in "OLD EBONY'S" life.
The Walking Horse had dropped over 100 pounds in a short period of
time and
Graceland feared the worst for him.
But Susan recalled an article she read in the Mid-South Horse Review
about
how Sandra Jackson of Oxford, Miss. had restored the health of her
senior
Walking Horse by feeding him a diet of warm mash composed of beet
pulp and
mixed feed soaked in mineral oil and water.
The situation for Jackson's horse was similar to EBONY'S, his teeth
were
worn and painful, making eating difficult and consumption
inadequate. The
palatable mash recipe provided the necessary nutrients to help EBONY
put the
weight back on.
"Now they get a 'hot lunch' three times a day," says
Susan, who prepares the
meals for the horses each day.
"I really believe that we have gained at least ten more years
with this
horse," remarks Alene.
However, it seems EBONY'S DOUBLE does have a bit of a sweet tooth
and
indulges in the occasional sugar cookie and Pepsi from a can, a
trick Elvis
had taught him. He does not follow Elvis' penchant for fried peanut
butter
and banana sandwiches, but does like a peanut butter cracker every
once in a
while.
Despite the treats, diets and work on the horses are a very serious
endeavor, coupled with heaps of loving care.
"A running joke around here is that the horses around the world
all share a
dream of getting to retire at Graceland." writes Todd Morgan,
Director of
Media and Creative Development for Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.,
in an
official response to a visitors' inquiry. "Another running joke
amongst our
very well treated employees is that the real dream job around here
is to be
a Graceland horse. These babies each have individualized health
care,
individualized diets, lavish love and attention, a vet on call 24
hours a
day."
The Mid-South Horse Review would like to thank Elvis Presley
Enterprises,
Inc. for permission to use the photographs and information included
in this
article.
