March of Dimes Marks 5oth Anniversary.
MCLEAN, Va., April 26 /PRNewswire/ --
Fifty years ago today, thousands of
parents drove their school-age children to designated sites across the
country for immunizations of an experimental vaccine that they hoped would
stop, once and for all, the raging polio epidemic that was leaving young
Americans paralyzed and sometimes dead. Organized on the grass-roots level
by the March of Dimes, this was the largest voluntary clinical field trial
ever undertaken. One year later, the Salk vaccine was declared "safe,
potent
and effective" and polio was virtually eliminated from North America
and,
hopefully, from the world by 2005.
Today's anniversary celebration was also marked by the launch of the new
book "Images of America: March of Dimes," featuring hundreds of
historic
photos from the Salk vaccine field trials to celebrities, such as Elvis
Presley, Louis Armstrong, Marilyn Monroe, and Lucille Ball, who supported
the March of Dimes during the polio years. More information about the book
and March of Dimes Polio Pioneers can be found at marchofdimes.com/polio.

Elvis on Stage Revisited - Live Vegas
Recordings from February 1970 FTD
Release Date: July 1, 2004.
Elvis On Stage Revisited is the WORKING title for a compilation of
live
recordings from Elvis's Las Vegas engagement of February 1970.
Note : Ernst Jorgensen NEVER denied the fact that this release will be the
next one.
Ernst Only stated on Ep.Gold ( two weeks ago ) after insinuations were
made
"it would be a soundboard - release and contain rehearsals"
on this new
FTD Cd, wich Ernst stated this was NOT the case.
Also the tracklisting was published on other sites , was according to
Ernst a educated guessing, since he did not even had the change to decide
wich songs will be on it.
And even the title was not decided two weeks ago.
And again at this moment "On Stage Revisited" is the
Working title.

adulthood as fans everywhere will join to celebrate the art form's 50th
anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, BMG Strategic Marketing Group
will issue four special releases that embody the inherent spirit and history
of rock. This includes: the official CD of the 50th anniversary "Memphis

record, as well as two comprehensive, deluxe Elvis Presley DVD box sets,

To help commemorate the anniversary and promote the companion CDs and DVDs,
BMG and Elvis Presley Enterprises are working with an impressive roster of
marketing partners including The Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau,
Sun
Studio, Hard Rock Cafe, TV Guide, Rolling Stone, QVC, Pepsi, Miller Beer,
Warner Bros., and others. Together, these companies will create innovative
and memorable events, promotions and partnerships to celebrate one of the
most relevant anniversaries in pop culture history.
On July 5, 1954 Elvis Presley recorded his first hit song, "That's All
Right" at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. Historians the world
over
point to this one occurrence as the official arrival of rock 'n' roll, and
now, 50 years later, millions will celebrate this landmark, with the
majority of the events emanating from the music's birthplace and Elvis's
home - Memphis. To celebrate, BMG Strategic Marketing has assembled original
master recordings of quintessential rock 'n' roll music from artists who
were born in Memphis, or those closely associated with it, for the official
CD compilation of the anniversary "Memphis Celebrates 50 Years of Rock
n'
Roll."
"Memphis Celebrates 50 Years of Rock n' Roll" features a diverse
array of
musicians such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King,
Otis Redding and Dusty Springfield, among others, singing some of rock's
most indelible songs, including the song that started it all "That's
All
Right " by Presley. (A full track listing is attached.)
"That's All Right" also appears on the BMG compilation "ELVIS
AT SUN," the
definitive collection of Presley's work at this historic studio, recorded
with the legendary producer Sam Phillips. "ELVIS AT SUN" is the
single CD of
all of Elvis's Sun master recordings updated for improved audio quality,
featuring many performances recorded from newly found tapes.
"Rock 'n' roll has been the soundtrack for several generations of fans
and
through the years BMG Music has been one of its foremost archivists,"
said
Executive Vice President of BMG Strategic Marketing, Joe DiMuro. "Now,
we
are proud to be able to continue the tradition and release these storied
recordings for people to rediscover where it all began."
In addition to the two CD releases, BMG Strategic Marketing has partnered
with Elvis Presley Enterprises to distribute two comprehensive deluxe DVD
box sets chronicling two of Elvis Presley's most memorable television
appearances. The DVDs "ELVIS: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD"
and
"ELVIS, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD" feature all the
previously
released material and an abundance of previously unreleased footage.
The Aloha set :
retail $ 29,95. ( 242 min.)
The "ELVIS: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD" is a
three-disc set
featuring all the material shot for Elvis Presley's 1968 television special,
which is considered one of rock 'n' roll's greatest moments on television
and one of the most magical and important moments of Elvis's career. The
original broadcast version of the special is included for historical
context. The DVD set features the two complete jam session concerts and the
two complete solo concerts - all with Elvis in black leather - that were
shot as the resource for the heart of the original broadcast. These four
concerts have never been released in their entirety. Also included are all
takes of the material shot for the original broadcast's two big production
numbers and for the show's opening and closing segments. Over half of the
seven hours of material on this set is previously unreleased. The material
is presented with newly re-mastered sound and picture.
Retail Price; $49.95 ( 440 min.)
"ELVIS, Aloha from Hawaii - Deluxe Edition DVD" is a two-disc set
featuring
all the performance material formally shot in conjunction with Elvis's
"Aloha from Hawaii" television special - an historic concert event
seen in
more than 40 countries by 1.5 billion people when it initially aired in
1973. The original American broadcast version of the show is included for
historical context. The DVD set features the complete concert that was
adapted for that special and the complete rehearsal concert performed two
days before. Both concerts are presented with newly re-mastered sound and
picture and are being released in their complete, uncut form for the first
time. Also included is the raw, uncut footage shot for the "Elvis
arrives"
sequence of the special's original opening and the raw, uncut performance
footage of songs recorded for the after-show session that Elvis taped as a
resource of extra material for the American broadcast.

As A Child, Bush Wanted To Be Elvis.
During the 1950s when he was in the fourth
grade, President George W. Bush's
greatest aspiration was to be Elvis Presley, First Lady Laura Bush said
Wednesday during a ceremony to honor Teacher of the Year.
Laura Bush said the president's mother Barbara Bush had to rescue her son
from the principal's office after he used charcoal to draw sideburns on his
face and he disrupted his music class.
These remarks by the First Lady Mrs Bush where made to the 2004 National and
State Teachers of the Year. Full transcript below. Relevant comments in
blue.
MRS. BUSH: Welcome everyone, welcome to the Rose Garden. This is the perfect
day to be here in the Rose Garden, and it's such a wonderful opportunity for
us to be able to honor great teachers from all around our country.
Congratulations to all of the teachers here who have been chosen as the
Teacher of the Year from your state. Thank you for your dedication to
America's children.
I also want to thank the members of Congress who are here with us today.
John Adams, the first President to live here in the White House, was a
congressman, but he was also a lawyer and a writer and a teacher. But Adams
didn't quite take to teaching. He once referred to some of his students as
"little runtlings." (Laughter.) I know none of you have ever
thought
anything like that. (Laughter.)
But John Adams knew that education was vital for the development of our
country, and for the development of our character. He once said, "There
are
two educations -- one should teach us how to make a living, and the other
should teach us how to live." And I know that every one of you do both.
I know how rewarding and how challenging teaching can be and what a
remarkable difference a teacher can make in the life of a child. When I was
eight years old, I made the decision to become a teacher. My mother said she
knew I'd be a teacher when she heard me scolding my dolls for not paying
attention. (Laughter.) But I wanted to teach because I loved school and I
loved my 2nd grade teacher -- I wanted to be just like her.
And, certainly, one of my most memorable days was my very first day
teaching. I had everything ready in the classroom: the pencils were
sharpened, the chairs were perfectly positioned, and then the children
walked in. Well, some walked in, some ran, and a few were pulled in by their
parents. (Laughter.) I had earned a teaching degree, but no textbook could
prepare me for the pressure of 20 sets of eyes staring at me with total
expectation. At 9:00 a.m. we started to work. We recited the alphabet and
numbers. We colored and we put together puzzles. We read a few books. And a
few more. And by 9:15 a.m., I'd gone through my entire day's lesson plans.
(Laughter and applause.)
Even if teachers don't fill every day with lesson plans, we know that
teachers fill children's lives with hope. Congratulations to every one of
you, and especially to the four finalists for the National Teacher of the
Year -- Jason Fulmer, Dennis Griner, Kyle Hileman, and Kathy Mellor.
Each of you are remarkable teachers, and you're also role models and
friends, and sometimes even surrogate parents. You listen, you challenge,
you motivate and mentor. And you inspire children to believe that they can
do anything, or be anything they want -- even if they dream of becoming
Elvis - (laughter) -- which was one little boy's hope who grew up in
Midland, Texas. In the late 1950s, many children across the country dreamed
of being just like Elvis. (Laughter.) And one little student found the
inspiration to follow his dream in his 4th grade music class.
One day, my mother-in-law, Barbara Bush, received a call from the school
principal, who said that George was in his office. She was shocked. George
was a perfect student who was well-behaved and earned straight A's. She
hurried to Sam Houston Elementary determined to give the principal a piece
of her mind. But Barbara had to bite her tongue when the principal reported
that George had disrupted his music class. In true Elvis fashion, he'd taken
a piece of charcoal and drawn sideburns and then tried to perform for the
other children. (Laughter.)
America's teachers help prepare writers, and doctors, and even the Elvis' of
tomorrow. Our next speaker never made it to the Ed Sullivan Show, but this
stage will have to do. Ladies and gentlemen, my husband, President George W.
Bush. (Applause.)
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all, very much. Please be seated. Welcome to the
Rose Garden.
I told you not to tell the Elvis story. (Laughter.)
She told it anyway, didn't she?
Every President since Harry Truman has presented this award -- Teacher of
the Year Award. And there's a good reason for that. When you're in the
company of some of the nation's finest citizens, our greatest teachers,
you're in the company of people who give their hearts and their careers to
improving the lives of children. You're in the company of the best of our
country.
I want to congratulate the teachers who are here from around the country. It
is a -- it is a great experience for Laura and me to greet you in the Oval
Office. I guess the word I would describe the teachers who came through is
they're joyous people. There's such a joy that radiates on your face and in
your character. And on behalf of our nation, I want to thank you for what
you do. You make a great contribution. (Applause.)
In spite of the fact that she told the Elvis story, the best decision I made
was to marry a teacher. Laura is a great First Lady for our country, and I'm
really proud of her. (Applause.)
Besides the distinguished teachers who are here, I see we've got some other
distinguished citizens with us today. Gene Hickok is the Deputy Secretary of
the Department of Education. Thank you for coming, Gene. I'm glad you're
here. From the great state of Kansas, Senator Brownback and Congressman
Dennis Moore. I'm honored you both are here. Thanks for coming. I appreciate
the fact that Lindsey Graham from South Carolina is here, and Congressman
Gresham Barrett. Thank you both for coming.
I see Maria Cantwell, Senator from the state of Washington is with us today,
and Congressman George Nethercutt. Appreciate you all being here. I
appreciate so very much the Governor of the great state of Rhode Island, and
the First Lady, Sue, is with us. Thank you both for being here today --
honored you took time to come. I'm confident our honoree is really pleased
you're here.
I appreciate the fact that Senator Chafee -- Senator Linc Chafee -- and
Senator Jack Reed have joined us. Thank you for coming. And Congressman Jim
Langevin is with us, as well. Good to see you, friend. I'm glad you're back.
I also, too, want to congratulate the National Teacher of the Year
finalists: Kyle Hileman, from DeSoto, Kansas; Jason Fulmer, from
Graniteville, South Carolina -- you've been there, haven't you, Senator?
That's good. (Laughter.) Dennis Griner, from Palouse, Washington. And, of
course, our honoree, Kathy Mellor.
I also want to congratulate Kathy's family, Duke and her three children who
have joined us today. I know there are some friends here with Kathy. Chris
Sirr is with Kathy. She came all the way over, and I know there's other
friends, as well, and I'm honored that they would take time out of their
lives to support their friend and honor their -- honor their buddy in what
is an important moment for our nation as we honor those who dedicate their
lives to teaching.
I want to thank Tom Houlihan, who is the Executive Director of the Council
of Chief State School Officers. Ernie Fleishman, the Senior Vice President
of Education of Scholastic, Inc., thank you for being here. I want to thank
the Council of Chief State School Officers and Scholastic, Inc. for
organizing this program. I also want to thank Peter McWalters, who's the
Chief State School Officer of Rhode Island.
Welcome, everybody. Thanks for coming. (Applause.)
It is fitting we have this annual ceremony because teachers are charged with
a great mission. You do the vital work of teaching our children. You give
them the skills that will help them succeed. You lay the foundation for
realizing the American Dream.
You do more than that, though. You kindle imaginations. You foster a love
for learning that can last a lifetime. What a fantastic gift to give a
child. The best teachers treat every child with dignity and fairness and
insist that their students treat others the same way. And through your
encouragement and caring, you teach the students to respect themselves.
To a child, it's a special feeling when a teacher knows your name, and asks
your opinion, cares what you think, and gives you encouragement. For some
students, unfortunately, you might be the only person who does that. Anyone
who has visited the classroom can see that teaching demands poise and
warmth, and oftentimes, extraordinary patience -- as my 4th grade teacher
had to show. (Laughter.) Yet, only the family members of teachers know some
of the other traits that define great teachers. They've seen you stay up
late rewriting lesson plans. They've seen you seek new ways to advance your
skills. They've seen you somehow summon the energy to make an after-school
game or a play. For you, teaching is not just a profession, it's a calling
you have answered. And we thank you for that. We thank you from the bottom
of our hearts. (Applause.)
We ask a lot from our teachers, and you're right to expect a lot from
society. I oftentimes say to people that if you're interested in being a
responsible citizen, and you're worried about the quality of the education
in the community in which you live, do something about it. Support your
schools. Support your teachers. Make a difference. As opposed to sitting on
the outside complaining, get involved, help people search for excellence.
State government has got a responsibility, as well. I used to say when I was
governor of Texas, education is to a state what defense is to the national
government -- it's the most important priority. If people are worried about
the quality of the education in the state in which they live, get your
governors to make education the number one priority of the state.
And finally, the federal government has got a role to play, as well. We've
increased spending here by 43 percent. The next budget will make it 50
percent over the past four years. In other words, there's a role for the
federal government. Under the No Child Left Behind, we're making sure that
federal money actually goes to help students learn.
I love the spirit of the No Child Left Behind Act, by the way. It's what I
call challenging the softy bigotry of low expectations. You see, the reason
you're Teachers of the Year is because you set high expectations. You know
in your heart of hearts every child can learn. You're willing to raise that
bar, to set high standards.
I appreciate so very much the willingness for teachers also to use the
accountability systems to determine whether or not what you're doing is
working. It's a vital part of making sure that no child gets left behind.
But make no mistake about it, we understand here in Washington that the
people who really make student achievement possible are the good-hearted
teachers who work hard every single day to make sure that no child is left
behind. And that's why we honor you here in the Rose Garden.
Our 2004 National Teacher of the Year is Kathy Mellor. She embodies the
qualities that all students and parents hope for in a teacher. For nearly 20
years, Ms. Mellor has taught English as a second language in North
Kingstown, Rhode Island. Kathy redesigned her district's ESL program to
better integrate students with their English-speaking classmates. And the
educational benefits of her innovation have been clear.
As the parents of one of Mrs. Mellor's students wrote, "My daughter's
English improved unbelievably that year." Gosh, that must be the best
words
a teacher can hear: "My daughter's English improved unbelievably that
year."
At the end of the year, she was able to finish her regular class
assignments. The mom said, she's able to do so alone, or with a little help
from her.
Ms. Mellor's creative approach extends well beyond the classroom. She
applied for and received a grant to teach English to the mothers of her ESL
students. What a great gift. What a caring soul. Working with two
colleagues, Ms. Mellor taught a group of women for two-and-a-half years. At
the end of the program, the women's language skills and personal confidence
were both vastly improved, and many went on to further education and to new
jobs.
Ms. Mellor's 19 years in North Kingstown has earned her the reputation for
creativity and caring and consistent success. She's humble and generous,
always willing to share credit with others, and committed to serving as a
mentor to every colleague. Because she understands the importance of her
work, her energy and her spirit have never waned. As Kathy put it, "After
many years, I still look forward to Monday mornings. Working with this
diverse community of learners and their supportive families is one of the
most rewarding things I have ever done or ever could do." No wonder
she's
Teacher of the Year.
Every teacher here has chosen a rewarding and optimistic profession. And the
families of America are glad that people like you show up every Monday
morning. I thank each of you for your skill and dedication. I thank you for
being an integral part of making sure America is a hopeful and optimistic
country for all.
And now, it's my honor to introduce and to present this award to the
National Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Kathy Mellor. (Applause.)

DETAILS :
This 'musical inventory' is the product of over 30 years' original research

Elvis' Palm Springs home sold for
$1.25M.

A home in Palm Springs, California,
owned in the '70s by Elvis and Priscilla
Presley has been sold for $1.25 million. The 5,000-square-foot house, with
five bedrooms and 4˝ bathrooms, is in the Old Tuscany area of Palm
Springs,
in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains.
Considered a historic site by the city, the 1946 house is protected
against
demolition; any changes to the exterior are subject to planning-department
review. The Presleys bought the house in 1970 for $85,000. They were
divorced in 1973. The rock star owned it until he died in 1977.
Preserving the exterior may mean maintaining a spa that the King of Rock
'n'
Roll had built into an outside corner of his property. The spa is covered
by
a gazebo, which shielded Elvis from helicopters. The home sits on nearly
two
residential-zoned hilltop acres with valley views and also has a sauna and
a
steam room. It was a party house for Elvis.

The UK Commemorates JULY 5th 1954.
Elvisly Yours are organising the biggest
Elvis Event in UK history when we
hope to have 50 Elvis Tribute Artists outdoors our shop on Baker Street on
a
London double-decker open top bus singing, "That's All Right" at
5pm on July
5th 2004. This is the exact time (11am in Memphis) that TV and Radio
Stations all over the world will play "That's All Right" to
commemorate the
50th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll. We want the streets to be filled with
Elvis fans and the ETA's celebrating the music of Elvis Presley. This is a
Golden Anniversary and the last major Elvis worldwide celebration and it
is
FREE. The 25th Anniversary of Elvis' death was massive but this Elvis
Event,
the 50th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll will be even bigger. Throughout the
World this historical event is known as an "Elvis Moment in
Time" but we
want the UK celebration to be the biggest and best.
Be part of history, finish work earlier or take the day off, come straight
from school or college, catch a bus, boat, train or plane and share your
love for Elvis Presley on July 5th 2004. It is going to be a glorious,
historic musical celebration for Elvis and a day you will be able to tell
your grandchildren about. Although, our July 5th 2004 is in memory of that
earth-shattering day 50 years ago when Elvis recorded his first record at
"Sun Studios" the Event will probably turn into the world's
greatest outside
Elvis Presley karaoke show. Also, importantly we will be using the
occasion
to raise money for the 'Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre' for Cancer
Support.
Bring along all your family and friends and tell them to pass the word to
join in history being made for our man, Elvis, at 5pm on July 5th 2004 at

D. EDWARD STANLEY ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT
OF FIRST FEATURE FILM AT AMERICAN
FILM MARKET.

DALLAS, TX-(FEBUARY 26, 2004) D. Edward
Stanley, independent film producer
and president of Impello Films Inc., announced the development of his
first
feature film "THE HEADHUNTER" at the American Film Market (AFM)
held in
Santa Monica, California February 25 to March 3, 2004. Stanley, the film's
writer/producer, is drawing from the wealth of his own life experiences to
bring this powerful original story to the screen. Experiences which for
Stanley, began when he was four-years-old and suddenly found himself
living
in the Graceland Mansion with new big brother Elvis Presley following the
1960 marriage of his mother Dee to Vernon Presley, Elvis's widowed father.
THE HEADHUNTER hits high gear with its portrayal of Stanley as a
16-year-old
high school student who just 24 hours later finds himself with the biggest
and hottest rock show of the 70's as a personal bodyguard to the King of
Rock and Roll. Growing up fast, Stanley quickly builds a repertoire of
skills from martial arts to guarding the secrets of his big brother. From
1972 to 1977 Elvis refuses to leave the house without Stanley. The film
chronicles the close relationship and experiences of the two brothers on
and
off the road from the frightening pressures of tour schedules and Elvis's
use and abuse of prescribed medications to the tragic toll of the
fast-paced
lifestyle on the world famous rock star and his young stepbrother. The
pivotal moment for both men comes on August 16, 1977 when all Stanley's
consummate bodyguard skills, devotion and love are not enough to save
Elvis
from the one person that proves fatal - himself.
"This movie isn't about high
collars and sideburns," Stanley said. "It's not
a story about Elvis Presley. It's a true story about what it was like for
me
at the age of sixteen to be plunged into the surrealistic,
self-destructive
world of an international icon. An icon who was also my big brother,
surrogate father, mentor and friend."
Stanley has written four books on his legendary stepbrother including
co-authoring "Elvis We Love You Tender" which earned a place on
the New York
Times' best sellers list. He is considered a leading authority on the life
and times of his legendary stepbrother. As president of Impello Films, Inc.,
D. Edward draws from the wealth of his own life experiences to bring
powerful original stories to the screen for theatrical distribution.
Stanley's THE HEADHUNTER is scheduled to go into pre-production in early
2004.

King of the West End.
First came Abba, then there was Queen
and Rod Stewart ... and last night saw
the premiere of what looks set to become the King of West End musicals.
The latest big-budget show based on the music of a rock legend opened to
huge acclaim from the audience of stars who danced in the aisles at the
Piccadilly Theatre from the moment the curtain lifted.
Antony Costa of Blue sported a pair of Elvis cufflinks and dragged fellow
bandmate Duncan James to his feet to jive to Suspicious Minds and The
Wonder
of You. "I'm a massive Elvis fan," he said. "My dad used to
sing his songs
to me and I wanted to grow up to be the guy.

"The show was great - and Mario
Kombou, the guy who plays him, is Greek like
me. His voice was fantastic."
Former BBC director general Greg Dyke raved: "It's real old-fashioned
entertainment and I adore Elvis - I was up there with the best of them
having a proper old boogie".
Outhwaite had recovered quickly from the Baftas party the night before.
"I'm
not an Elvis fan at all but I love musicals and this one was really good
fun."
Tamsin Outhwaite loved the musical
At the premiere party at the Café de Paris, Sir Tim Rice said: "I
thought
the musical had a real vibrancy and I imagine it is going to be a big hit.
It's a feel-good show."
Critical reception was slightly less enthusiastic - the Evening Standard's
Nick Curtis thought the show was " slightly tacky". But Elvis's
first cousin
Donna Presley said it was "a real labour of love." The daughter
of Elvis's
aunt Nash had flown from Memphis to help promote the show.
She praised the Rob Bettinson and Alan Jamespenned production despite the
fact that it has not secured the rights to use the title song and other
favourites.
"Elvis would have been so honoured
and humbled to have seen his movie turned
into a musical here in London," she said.

Presley Still Makes A Difference.
Part of the legend of Elvis Presley was
his gargantuan appetite for
gift-giving. He gave Lincolns and Cadillacs to total strangers; jewelry
and
guns to girlfriends and even President Richard Nixon. He paid department
stores to open late at night for private shopping sprees for his friends.
The Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards Gala honors Priscilla Presley with the
humanitarian award. His ex-wife and board chairwoman and president of
Elvis
Presley Enterprises, Priscilla Presley, thinks Elvis just had a big
capacity
for caring. And now, she is continuing his quest to make dreams come true.
Presley supports many charity organizations through Elvis Presley
Enterprises, the company that markets Elvis products and manages his
intellectual copyrights, among other functions. One of the charities is
Presley Place, a Memphis shelter for battered and abused women. But the
mission of the Dream Foundation struck a chord. Presley has been national
ambassador for the Wish Foundation for more than three years.

Elvis honoured by Presley tartan.

Elvis Presley visited Scotland briefly
in 1960.
A special Presley tartan has been designed to honour the King of Rock and
Roll's north east of Scotland roots.
Elvis's alleged roots can be traced back to tiny Lonmay in Aberdeenshire.
Now an official Presley of Lonmay tartan has been invented. It is made up
of
four different colours - blue, grey, green and yellow.
The kilt even comes complete with a sporran engraved with thistles and a
bald eagle - marking the Scottish and American link.
Lonmay's only hotel now plans to deck itself out in the tartan in
recognition of the Elvis connection.
The Presley of Lonmay tartan inventor, Mike King, is a known tartan
designer
and director of the Aberdeen menswear and tartan hire family firm Philip
King.
Elvis link
He hopes the Presley of Lonmay tartan will win fans throughout the world.
Mr King, 59, said: "I am very proud of this Presley of Lonmay tartan
as I
bought his records when I was younger and am a fan.
"We used blue to represent the nearby town of Peterhead - the Blue
Toon - as
well as grey for the skies, green for countryside grass, and yellow for
local cornfields.
"The sporran is gold and engraved with thistles and a bald eagle to
show the
Scottish and American link."
David Gibbins, owner of Lonmay's Ban-Car Hotel, said: "It's a great
idea and
I wish the kilt maker luck.
"It's a nice tartan.
"We are refurbishing our lounge so we plan to use the Presley of
Lonmay
tartan to re-decorate."
Ian Hainey, Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board's spokesman, said:
"Hopefully this is the start of entrepreneurs and local businesses
moving in
to take advantage of the Elvis link and help tourism in the area."

EMI denies allegations it inflated music
sales.
LONDON, April 8 (Reuters) - British music
company EMI <EMI.L> denied
allegations on Thursday that it tried to manipulate record sales figures,
while a lawmaker in California said he was studying the charges.
The allegations stem from a dispute between EMI, the world's third-largest
music company and home to artists including Norah Jones and Coldplay, and
the hip-hop record label Avatar.
After their distribution deal went sour last year, EMI filed a lawsuit
seeking more than $1 million it said is owed by Avatar. Avatar countersued
for breach of contract and alleged that EMI hired consultants to illicitly
inflate sales figures and push a record up the charts.
"EMI does not engage in these alleged practices. This is a red herring
attempt by Avatar to divert from a lawsuit EMI filed to recover more than a
million dollars Avatar owes EMI from a former distribution deal," EMI
said
in a statement.
California-based Avatar could not be reached for comment.
The New York Post, quoting a deposition in the case, reported that former
EMI executive Gene Rumsey described under oath a practice whereby retailers
were "given free copies of an album by an independent marketing company
and
for that (are) asked to scan the record more times than they actually sell
it". According to a separate story in the Los Angeles Times, California
State Senator Kevin Murray, head of the California Senate's committee on the
entertainment industry, is reviewing the allegations.
Earlier this week, a music industry trade body said that 2003 global music
sales declined 7.3 percent, the largest drop in more than 20 years.

Two New Import Audience CD's
from Memory Records.
New CDs from Memory Records
Memory Records will release two CDs in April 2004.
Those two shows were recorded from the audience and hereunder some of the
details given by Memory Records on these upcoming releases.
On The Road Again

"The tremendous success of the August/September Las Vegas season was
followed by a short tour across the southern states and Elvis was ready to
appear in West Coast cities for the first time since the 1950s. Memorial
Coliseum in Portland, Oregon was the second stop of the tour and Elvis's
high spirit is apparent from his first step on the stage. During the usual
kissing song "Love Me Tender", Elvis rearranged the lyrics
".for my darling
I love you, cause you took the pill." perhaps due to a recent
paternity
suit? A humble and heartfelt "How Great Thou Art" is among the
best
performances of the evening. This is only the second live performance and
thus is closer to the 1966 studio master than later live versions, which
are
more dramatic and monumental. Elvis is whisked from the venue and the
11,800
attendants have once again witnessed Elvis Presley back On The Road Again."
Shining In Portland

"The year is 1973 and a lot of
things have changed since Elvis' last visit
to Portland. During the February 1973 Las Vegas visit, it was apparent
Elvis
was not well physically and psychologically. Nevertheless, he finished the
season with an excellent closing night on February 23. Two months later he
was back on tour starting with a solid show in Phoenix, Arizona. In the
middle of the tour Elvis played in Portland again. It was the same venue,
mostly the same band, but Elvis was a different singer resulting in a
different show. This performance is tighter and more polished than the
1970
concert. Some songs were performed with great care and passion, especially
the semi-biographic dramatic ballads "You Gave Me A Mountain",
"What Now My
Love" and "I'm Leavin'". Among the highlights of this show
is "Steamroller
Blues" which Elvis introduces as "My latest record, ladies and
gentlemen".and had been the most recent single taken from the live
"Aloha"
album. This one-hour with The King culminates with a killer rockin'
version
of Elvis' 1958 hit A Big Hunk 'O Love."

Hi again Ernst,
There was some comotion about the new
release on the FTD CD July 1st.
This was the announcement :
On Stage Revisited - Rehearsals & Alt. Live Performances.
The July 1st, 2004 Release will be a CD containing rehearsals and
alternate
live performances from February 1970 in Las Vegas, NV. The Elvis Fan Club
Of
Great Britain sent an order form for this with the April FTD releases and
mentioned the following tracks :
Proud Mary/ Sweet Caroline / Dont Cry Daddy / Kentucky Rain / It Hurts Me
/
The Wonder Of You / Release Me / See See Rider / Polk Salad Annie / Walk A
Mile In My Shoes / I Can't Stop Lovin You / All Shook Up / In The Ghetto /
Suspicius Minds / I Got A Woman / Hound Dog / Long Tall Sally / Love Me
Tender / Can't Help Falling In Love.
The FTD soundtrack '' Paradise Hawaiian Style '' will be also released at
the same time.
You confirmed me that this was NOT true and told me that the release would
contain RCA- Recordings, since there were insinuations made on other sites
these were soundboard recordings and rehearsals.
Let us make this straight for the readers, Andylon.
Ist of all there is NO tiitle yet for this release.
Second we have NO rehearsals on this CD.
We do use alternate takes.
Ernst, I do not understand at all the track-listing that is going arround
on
other the sites.
Also this is not accurate, Andylon
We even did not even have the time to look into it, to decide wich
songs
will be released for this FTD CD.
We are working hard on the May 15 th releases.
So, how come there is a tracking-list published, Ernst?
I really don't know, I'm afraid some educated guessings were made.
What about the Elvis At Sun CD, there was a statement made by Joe Dimuro
there is a possibility that there will be an unreleased Sun recording
added
for this release?
Well. I am afraid it will not happen, Andylon.
Till now we were not able to make the deal and next week the Master has to
be ready.
But IF the deal is made within a week or so, be sure we will make an
official anoouncement right away.
Also there was a mentioning that your FTD Book & CD ( title not known
yet)
was cancelled.
No, also this is also not accurate, this will be released and maybe we
will
issue at the end of the year another FTD Book&CD.
We just have to wait and see, Andylon.
Well, again thanks Ernst for making some topics clear.

Elvis-The Concert Goes to Hawaii and
Singapore.

Elvis-The Concert, the touring
production that reunites Elvis (via video)
with his former bandmates live on stage, will play the Honolulu
International Center arena in Hawaii on August 15, 2004 and the Singapore
Indoor Stadium in Singapore on August 21, 2004. Show times (both are in
the
evening), ticket links and other details will be posted as soon as
possible.
The very moment we have updates, we will always post them on this site and
issue E-newsletter alerts. If you are signed up for our free E-newsletter
service, then you'll always have the latest information as soon as it's
available.
Elvis-The Concert is produced and presented by Stig Edgren and his company,
SEG Events, in association with Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. Edgren
received an invitation for the show to have a very special one-show
booking
in Singapore. Even though the show is not touring at present and no tours
are specifically in the works at this time, this rare one-off opportunity
worked out. It is confirmed. Also confirmed is the stop in Hawaii with a
show at the Honolulu International Center, where Elvis performed his
historic 1973 Aloha from Hawaii concert.
Before the questions start pouring in - no, there will not be a
re-creation
of the Aloha show for this booking at the H.I.C. arena. It will be
essentially the latest edition of the regular tour program for Elvis-The
Concert. Re-working all the Elvis video material and music charts,
prepping
the show production team, booking the rehearsals and all else that would
have to happen for changing everything to just Aloha material is not
feasible for SEG to do for this gig - let alone a full-out re-creation of
the Aloha production. But, about half the regular Elvis-The Concert
programming is already made up of the finest performances from the Aloha
show anyway, so a lot of the emotions of a re-creation will be felt by all.
There has always been a desire by SEG, EPE and the show cast to take
Elvis-The Concert to Hawaii - particularly to the H.I.C. arena - and this
sudden opportunity to do so and having it all work out is a wonderful and
exciting surprise.

Elvis Hat For Auction.
During Cooper Owen's forthcoming
"At The Movies Virtual auction" on the 28th
April, Elvis' "Stay Away Joe Hat" will be for sale:
A fawn coloured felt stetson hat purported to have been part of Elvis
Presley' wardrobe on the 1968 film Stay Away Joe. The hat has makers label
Resistol Self. Conforming XXX Beaver inside. The hat also has a Metro
Goldwyn Mayer Pictures label , and numerous hand written notes inside,
such
as Stay Away Joe, Elvis Presley and Return To Wardrobe. The outside of the
hat is signed Elvis Presley, Burgess Meredith and Joan Blondell. The hat
has
a small tear on one side, and as such was not used in the film itself, but
a
Stetson, believed to be this one, was placed for sale at an auction held
at
Elvis' Circle G Ranch, on November 5 1968.
The hat is accompanied by a typed letter, with original envelope, on Metro
Goldwyn Mayer Pictures headed paper, dated 1970. The letter explains that
a
Stetson was withdrawn from use in the film (Stay Away Joe) due to damage
and
that at a later date was included with various other Elvis related film
items at the 'Circle G Ranch' Arizona. The letter is from Edith Head, of
the
Wardrobe Department, MGM Studios. Intrestingly the letter refers to the
filming taking place in late 1968, when in fact the film was made in 1967
and released in 1968.

From the Memphis Convention &
Visitors Bureau & Goodman Media.
Memphis is leading the nation in a
celebration of the 50th Anniversary of
Rock 'n' Roll and will host a "Global Moment in Time" on July 5,
2004 - 50
years to the day when Elvis recorded "That's All Right" at Sun
Studio in
Memphis. This recording became a pivotal moment in rock history and is
considered "the big bang" in the dawn of the rock 'n' roll era.
On July 5th at 12 noon (ET), radio stations across the world are
encouraged
to simultaneously play "That's All Right." This will hopefully
mark the
largest playing of a single song at the same moment in history.
We encourage you to call your local radio stations to get them on board to
commemorate this musical milestone and to help us mark 50 Years of Rock
'n'
Roll. Stations or radio personnel seeking additional information can
contact
Goodman Media at (212) 576-2700, extension 239.
It's very likely that there will be a LIVE satellite feed directly from
Sun
Studio that will be available to radio stations that morning. Thus,
stations
are invited to carry the playing of "That's All Right" emanating
directly
from Sun. Cool, huh?

First-Ever Greatest Hits Gospel Album Features all of Elvis' Greatest
Inspirational Recordings/ Single
"Who Am I" Available on Rick Hendrix Co.
New York, NY, NY - Elvis Presley is an entertainment legend whose
influence
on the music industry is unsurpassed. While many people may at first
associate Elvis with rock music, some of Elvis' most profound influences,
and his most popular recordings, have been gospel music. More than 250
million Elvis gospel recordings have been sold in the U.S. alone, but
never
before has there been a greatest hits collection of these inspirational
songs. On March 23rd, BMG Strategic Marketing Group/RCA Music Group will
release the single-disc Elvis gospel compilation: "ELVIS ULTIMATE
GOSPEL."
Growing up, religious music played a central role in Elvis' daily life.
The Presley family attended The First Assembly of God Church in small-town
Tupelo, Mississippi. When Elvis was just three or four years old, he would
walk up to the choir in the middle of church and start beating time. As a
teenager in Memphis, Elvis and his friends would sneak into churches in
primarily black neighborhoods just to listen to the music. The welcoming
congregations and stirring music
inspired Elvis' appreciation of the
multiple facets of religious music. Elvis and his family were also fans of
the Grand Ol' Opry, a syndicated Nashville radio broadcast with country
music stars who often included religious songs in their repertoire. Elvis
went on to record gospel albums himself, with his first, "How Great
Thou
Art" winning Elvis his first Grammy Award. "How Great Thou
Art" mesmerized
many fans who had never even heard gospel music. Elvis went on to win two
more Grammy Awards in his lifetime for his gospel efforts.
Scheduled for release on March 23, 2004, "ELVIS ULTIMATE
GOSPEL," is one of
the most highly-anticipated CDs of the year. The long-overdue album is the
first-ever greatest hits single-disc Elvis gospel compilation from BMG,
with
all of Elvis' greatest inspirational recordings. With more than an hour of
music on 24 tracks, this album is the ultimate collection of Elvis gospel
hits. "ELVIS ULTIMATE GOSPEL" provides testament to Elvis'
musical
excellence and acknowledges the priceless contribution of the talented
songwriters, musicians and producers involved.
BMG is the global music division of Bertelsmann AG, one of the world's

'68 Comeback And Aloha Deluxe - Ed.
DVD.
Todd Morgan EPE:
We've not actually sat down and tallied up how many hours and minutes of
our
comprehensive '68 and Aloha sets have not ever been in release. We
probably
need to come up with at least an approximation sometime soon. Both figures
cited by this journalist are inaccurate and exaggerated. He must have
misunderstood what he was told by BMG.
This was not a big formal announcement. Just a general "what's going
on"
interview done with BMG. As soon as absolutely every little aspect of the
'68 and Aloha DVD content is locked in and cannot change, we will do a
big,
formal announcement with every detail. We know that if we say anything
about
content and one little thing changes, we'll get crucified. We expect no
problems or disappointments. Actually, the information is all typed up and
ready to post as soon as every detail is finalized. No one is more anxious
to get the word out than we are. It gets more exciting by the day around
here as the release date approaches and the work continues into its final
stages.

Here are 2 responses about these
rumours;

We won't removed this news because we
have no reasons to think this is an
April Fool's joke.
We don't think that the English fan club printed a pre-order form for
making
a joke. It has also been confirmed by Todd Slaughter to a friend of mine (
the e-mail was forwarded to us ). '' On Stage Revisited '' is a tentative
title and could be changed later on.
I can also add that from another source we know that '' It Hurts Me '' has
been indeed done in a rehearsal and would last about 1 minute ( more or
less
). We don't know if it has been performed live and recorded on stage but
the
rehearsal does exist.
The person who wrote it's a joke is a joke by itself.

JUNKIE XL. Interview.
Being big in Japan is not all it's
cracked up to be. Just ask Dutch DJ Tom
Holkenborg, who as Junkie XL took an obscure Elvis song called "A
Little
Less Conversation" and remixed it into an enormous international hit.
Even
though he had already released two albums and established himself as an
electronic-music producer, it was this one-off project that grabbed the
attention of the monster pop establishment.
"You've got to understand what happened," Holkenborg says,
sitting in his
Los Angeles studio. "Before that remix, Elvis was banned to Time-Life
magazine compilations that you could only order from the TV late at night.
When that song became No. 1 in something like 24 countries, Elvis became a
new industry product. His CDs became massive. What goes on in the brain of
a
record company guy when that happens is, 'Who's dead? Who had an amazing
career years ago? Who can we bring back to life?'"
More remix offers came flooding in: Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, even
The
Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever." Holkenborg balked. He
never intended
for Junkie XL to become such a crassly commercial enterprise. In fact, he
only got a one-time fee for his work on "A Little Less Conversation,"
a
project commissioned by an advertising agency for a sneaker commercial. He
flatly isn't interested in repeating the trick.
"The Elvis thing was an unknown track that fit well with the context
of the
advertisement," he says. "That
was the reason I did it. Nike put $90 million
into the marketing, and that's basically how it became a hit. I had
nothing
to do with it, and I wasn't really proud of that process."
Instead, Holkenborg is using his new profile to revitalize the Junkie XL
brand. After a pair of joyless albums that attempted to mash up techno and
rock - Saturday Teenage Kick (1997) and Big Sounds of the Drags (1999),
both
on Roadrunner Records - his latest finds him teaming up with several
celebrity fans and pulling off the ultimate concept album.
Radio JXL: A Broadcast From the Computer Hell Cabin (Koch, 2004) is based
on
an imaginary pirate-radio broadcast that sees guest vocalists - including
Gary Numan, Chuck D, Peter Tosh, The Cure's Robert Smith and Depeche
Mode's
Dave Gahan - putting their distinctive imprints on Holkenborg's trance
compositions. It works surprisingly well, certainly better than Paul
Oakenfold's similarly ambitious Bunkka (Maverick, 2002), and is a far
better
prospect than, say, a big-beat makeover of Sinatra's "My Way."
Holkenborg says that despite all their elaborate electronic trappings,
most
of the songs from Hell Cabin started out on guitars. "It's completely
different than writing on a keyboard," he explains. "The ideas
for the
melody come from guitar." After he gets the basic premise down, he
then
builds up the songs in Digidesign Pro Tools.
Half of Holkenborg's studio is
analog, with a large number of vintage synths
and old outboard gear like tube compressors and equalizers and reverbs.
The
other half comprises state-of-the-art digital technology, with a number of
Macs loaded with all of the latest software. "I use Logic, Reason,
Live and
Cubase and try to benefit from them as much as possible," he says.
"But I
use each program for what it does best, its specialty."
Holkenborg still puts out remixes; his version of Gahan's "Dirty
Sticky
Floors" was a huge club hit. But these days, his time is equally
divided
between producing associates such as Sasha and Digweed, sound designing
for
major motion-picture companies and making his imaginary radio station into
reality through the Junkie XL Website. "The guy who invents the
48-hour day
is going to get a big hug from me," Holkenborg says with a

Gospel CD First of Several New Elvis
Releases.

Elvis is back, baby -- and this time
he's found religion.
BMG has released "Elvis Ultimate Gospel", the first
greatest-hits collection
of Elvis Presley's gospel recordings.
"Elvis Ultimate Gospel" features such classic Elvis gospel tunes
as "How
Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace," "Crying in the
Chapel" and "(There'll Be)
Peace in the Valley (For Me)." The tracks were mastered from original
mastering tapes using direct stream digital for premium sound quality.
While Elvis has long been known as the king of rock 'n' roll, he also has
sold more than 250 million gospel recordings in the United States,
according
to BMG/RCA. This week, "Elvis Ultimate Gospel" debuts on the
Billboard Top
Contemporary Christian chart at No. 9 and on the Top Country Albums chart
at
No. 30.
Within the BMG Strategic Marketing Group, an "Elvis Team" was
formed two
years ago to concentrate solely on the Elvis Presley franchise.
Joe DiMuro, the group's executive VP, says the team is dedicated to
catalog
and product management, A&R development, marketing and promotion.
The Elvis Team is taking a multi-pronged marketing approach to promoting
the
album, including working with NASCAR's fan list (which fits the record's
demographic) to initiate e-mail blasts through Elvis Presley Enterprises'
(EPE) Web site at elvis.com. BMG has its own Web site to promote the CD,
elvisultimategospel.com.
And beginning in April, a track from the album will be featured in 900
movie
theaters, including selected Regal and
United Artists venues, under a deal
with Cinema Sounds.
The Elvis Team has been working on radio promotions, with key gospel and
crossover stations offering promotional trips to Graceland, prize packages
and content giveaways, DiMuro says. The team currently is preparing
projects
around July 5, the 50-year anniversary of the birth of rock 'n' roll.
BMG and EPE is scheduled to release "The '68 Comeback"
deluxe-edition DVD
June 22.
The three-disc set contains seven hours of content showcasing
never-before-seen performances, the original unedited TV special as it
aired
and all the outtakes from the skits.
"Aloha From Hawaii" will be released at the same time. The
double-DVD will
have special packaging with three to four hours of previously unreleased
material and content.
Another Elvis project to look out for is "Elvis at Sun", a
compilation of
Elvis' greatest recordings at Sun Studios, DiMuro says. The Elvis Team
says
there is a possibility that this will include a previously unreleased
track.
As already mentioned, FTD are planning an "Elvis At Sun" book
with a three
CD set in 2005. In a recent interview with ICE Magazine, Ernst Jorgensen
says that "hopefully BMG will have a three CD set with everything
Elvis ever
recorded for Sun, from the worst sounding acetate ever - of the Louisiana
Hayride - to all the Sun masters. It will be very limited, probably just
5,000 copies, a labor of love".

Lost voice' of Sixties soul.
TIMI YURO was among the most powerful
and emotional singers of the 1960s.
Her passion and commitment did not fall far short of Aretha Franklin's,
and
Dinah Washington once said of her, "Timi's voice doesn't come from
the
throat, but from the heart. She doesn't just sing the song, she lives it."
She was born Rosemarie Timotea Aurro into an Italian-American family in
Chicago in 1940, and her mother encouraged her to sing. The family moved
to
Los Angeles in 1952 where Frankie Laine's vocal coach was so impressed
that
she gave Timi free training. By the time she was 14, she was singing as
Timi
Yuro in night-clubs, although her mother disapproved and interrupted one
performance by shouting, "This is your last song, young lady."
Yuro's
parents had a restaurant in Hollywood and she became their resident singer.
Timi Yuro was signed to Liberty Records in late 1959, but she was not
happy
at being asked to record lightweight pop songs. She gatecrashed an
executive
meeting and threatened to tear up her contract unless she could record as
she wanted. She then broke into an impassioned rendition of "Hurt",
which
had been a rhythm and blues hit for Roy Hamilton in 1954.
"Hurt" was a remarkable recording debut for Yuro - the power,
the confidence
and the feeling for lyrics are all in place. It went to No 4 on the US
charts in 1961, with the B-side, "I Apologise", also making the
charts. The
gimmick of the small girl with the man's voice meant nothing here in
Britain, possibly because we already had Helen Shapiro, and Yuro never
made
the UK charts.
She included Johnnie Ray's "Cry" on her first LP, Hurt!!!!!!!,
the
punctuation being Liberty's, and then recorded a single, "I Believe",
with
Ray. A driving revival of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" came next,
and a new
song, "Count Everything", inspired by the Drifters, deserved to
do better.
In 1962, when Yuro's record producer Clyde Otis left Liberty, Phil Spector
was asked to take over her recording of Otis's song "What's a Matter
Baby".
Spector gave her big voice an even bigger backing and the grandiose record
returned her to the US Top Twenty. An
album should have followed, but
Spector had other commitments.
Also in 1962, Burt Bacharach arranged one of his best songs, "The
Love of a
Boy", for Yuro. She also befriended Willie Nelson, a struggling
songwriter
who was trying to place his songs. Her parents would feed him for free at
their restaurant.
Ray Charles's LP Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music came out in
1962. Yuro was impressed and in 1963 recorded an album of her own in the
same vein, Make the World Go Away. The song selection was excellent and
included some of Willie Nelson's compositions. The single of the title
track
made the US Top Thirty and Yuro toured the UK with Brook Benton, Dion,
Lesley Gore and Trini Lopez: Yuro opened the show with her gospel number
"Sinner Man", a hard act to follow.
In 1964 Yuro moved to Mercury Records and, although she made fine records
for them, notably "You Can Have Him", she had no chart success.
In 1968 she
rejoined Liberty and recorded two singles in the UK, "Something Bad
on My
Mind" and "Interlude", the underrated title song from the
Oskar Werner film.
In 1994 Morrissey and Siouxsie made the UK Top Thirty with a revival of
"Interlude".
In 1969 Yuro married Robert Selnick and left the music business to raise a
family. Both the Manhattans and Elvis Presley had success with "Hurt"
in
1976, which encouraged her to start performing again. Some of her old
recordings found favour with Northern Soul clubbers, notably "Can't
Stop
Running Away" and "It'll Never Be Over For Me".
Yuro lost her voice in 1980 and underwent surgery for throat cancer.
Around
the same time, a re-recording of "Hurt" was a hit in Holland
and, when she
was able to sing again, she recorded two albums for the Dutch market. In
1982 Willie Nelson repaid her earlier kindness by lending her both his
band
and his recording studio for an album, Timi Yuro - Today, which also
featured his guest vocals. She lost her voice again in 1984 and had been
fighting cancer ever since.
In the 1990s there was renewed UK interest in her work, with two excellent
compilations - The Lost Voice of Soul! (1993) and The Voice That Got Away
(1996).
Rosemarie Timotea Aurro (Timi Yuro), singer: born Chicago 4 August 1940;
married 1969 Robert Selnick; died Las Vegas 30 March 2004.

Al Dvorin to host the TCB Reunion in

The TCB show featuring John Wilkinson,
will be an historic event. The

Master of Ceremonies for the celebration of "50 Years of Rock 'n'

Dvorin - who booked Elvis even before he was contracted by Tom
Parker - has
agreed to host these very special shows on October 2nd and 3rd. Al Dvorin
is
known all over the world for his booming voice ("Ladies and
Gentlemen, Elvis

the
Elvis organisation. Al saw the rise of a very young Elvis in 1954, upto
the
American icon he is today. To quote big Al: "I did every job for
Elvis,
except wash his hair..."

Lisa Presley Promises To
Return to Australia.
The King is gone, but his daughter intends to be back - or at least
that is
the promise Lisa Marie Presley made to fans after the final show of her
Australian tour last Sunday.

Performing at the Crown Palladium, Presley and her band pulled off a
gutsy
and surprisingly moving show, with Elvis's daughter showered by gifts,
flowers and the occasional marriage proposal, from the reverent audience.
But the show did not stop after the stage lights went down.
Unlike many touring acts who choose hot night spots, exclusive clubs,
pricey
bars or five-star restaurants to wind down in after their show, Presley,
her
mum Priscilla, band and entourage kept the party going at P.J. O'Brien's
pub
at Southgate.
In true rock-star fashion, mother and daughter were chauffeured in
separate
cars the one block from Crown Towers to Southgate, arriving about 11.30pm.
Presley and her party of 30 did not book the venue, nor request a private
VIP section.
Instead they mingled with drinkers, danced to the house band and Presley
enjoyed a couple of pints of Guinness.
Among the revellers were a 100-strong Welsh choir that was passing through
Melbourne.
"At one stage there were about 100 blokes standing around serenading
her in
Welsh," recalled an observer.
"I don't think she had a clue what they were going on about, but she
enjoyed
it.
"There were some pretty happy Irish people going up and chatting to
her and
she did not seem to mind."
After the band finished its set, Presley started requesting songs -
nothing
by Elvis -- though she resisted the temptation to get up on stage and join
the jam.
Presley left the building about 4am, telling her fellow carousers that she
was nine songs into her next album, which is being produced by Grammy
winner
Linda Perry, and planned to be back in Melbourne in September.

Elvis lives on, is really
crazy-kooky.

Elvis Presley died at Graceland on Tues., Aug. 16, 1977, having owned
and
lived in the mansion for the last 20 years of his life. I visited the
500-acre site on Tues., Mar. 16 with several friends, having driven much
of
the previous day from New Orleans. A ticket for a tour of the "Graceland
Mansion" costs upwards of $15 and will not gain you admittance into
the
Elvis Presley Automobile Museum or "Sincerely, Elvis," the Elvis
Presley
memorabilia museum, nor will it allow you the opportunity to take
self-guided tours through Elvis' two custom airplanes (although these
planes
are visible beyond a fence from the red carpet walkway up to the ticket
office). At nearly $30, the Platinum Tour, as in million-seller, provides
entrance into all of these attractions and lasts approximately three hours.
GETTY IMAGES
Who the hell is this clown?
I will not go over every step of the tour (that is, only the house
tour).
However, certain elements are worth mentioning. To begin with, the house
itself is charmingly unprepossessing. Ascending the hill in the shuttle
bus
while Elvis sang "Welcome to My World" on the personal audio
headset, one
sees the house appear, relatively diminutive, modestly adorned, properly
crowning its hill. It is not the house that I, at least, expected to have
housed the King of Rock-'n-Roll for two decades, at times for days and
days
on end. In fact, nothing about the place suggests even a single element
of
"Elvisness," let alone rock-'n-roll music, narcotic addiction,
familial
strife, and so on. This is perhaps the most interesting thing about
Graceland. That is, everything is left unsaid.
The audio tour takes the visitor through the famously-hospitable Presley
living and dining rooms, the kitchen with its two vintage security
monitors,
the basement corridors lined with gold and platinum records, and video
screens showing Elvis' various notorious television appearances, then with
Elvis' army gear and the elaborate costumes worn throughout his extended
film career, a room showcasing the King's taste in clothing, furniture,
and
handguns, up through the ominous "Jungle Room" den, out to the
pasture and
stables (which, though rather expansive, were home to only two horses when
I
visited), the trophy room, and the racquet ball court also lined with
records and screens, and finally into the "Meditation Garden"
wherein lie
Elvis, his parents Vernon and Gladys, and his grandmother, Minnie.
But what about paranoia, mysticism, or mindless self-destruction, or
exhaustion and misunderstanding, or impossible wealth and fame? The
Presley
household was, according to the Estate of Elvis Presley, entirely idyllic,
decent, and simple. Now, I am by no means saying it was otherwise-this is
not my place, of course-but I was and still am under the impression that
things were not as clean-cut All-American as apple pie. The Estate would
have visitors believe otherwise: Among the giant-armed lion-legged couches
in the "Jungle Room" and the lush curtains on all the windows is
only a
single, sheeping mention of divorce. Drug-related subjects, images of Lisa
Marie after eaery childhood, details of the deaths of any members of the
Presley family, and so on are all completely absent.
Now, I accept the argument that goes something like, "But we want to
keep
the beautiful memories alive, and why remind us of such painful, confused
times?" Well, O.K., I agree that the inclination is to idealize this
somewhat otherworldly man but I would counter by saying that, in the end,
Graceland provides its visitors with absolutely everything but Elvis
himself, and by this, I mean Elvis the human being, the real person who
combed his hair, called his parents, served his country, and performed
stunningly. The individual presented on this tour is only a fantastic
construction, a composite of facts and dreamy rumors, false ideals, and
phony wishes. Accordingly, I remember feeling disbelief at the final,
impossible sight of the grave, the only lasting reminder of the King's
physical presence.
Graceland is an astonishing place. It is the final, triumphant
transformation of a beautiful human being into revenue. It represents a
shockingly reductive take on American history, a masterpiece of
revisionism.
When it turns out that the whole place is not a cruel, tongue-in-cheek
farce, it is quite frankly heartbreaking.

Elvis McPresley.

The small town of Lonmay in Scotland may well be flocked with Elvisfans
this
nex summer. Author Allan Morrison traced the roots of Elvis, and much to
his
surprise he ended up in.... Scotland. He found records showing that
Elispeth
Leg married Andrew Presley in Lonmay on August 27, 1713. Their son, also
named Andrew, became the first Presley in America when he arrived in
North-Carolina in 1745. In 1935 one of his descendants, Vernon Presley,
became father of Elvis Presley. The town counsel of Lonmay, where still
many
Presley's and Presly's live, has already invited Elvisfans from all over
the
world to spend their holidays in the Scottish village.
