Billboard Reviews Ultimate Gospel CD.

During his phenomenal career, Elvis Presley
won only three Grammy Awards,
and they were all for his gospel recordings.
Featuring 24 tracks on a single CD, this collection beautifully showcases
Presley's deep gospel roots. The packaging includes quotes from his mother,
Gladys, commenting on how her son always loved to sing in church.
Indeed, Presley's appreciation for the music is revealed on tracks like
"Swing Down Sweet Chariot." Timeless standards -- including "How
Great Thou
Art," "Amazing Grace" and "He Touched Me" -- are
delivered with a passion
and authority that is truly moving. And depending on the track, he is backed
by the Jordanaires, the Imperials Quartet and others.
This collection is not just a must for Elvis fans but for anyone who loves
great gospel music sung with power and conviction.

Scotty, Bill & D.J. Honored by
Memphis Chapter of NARAS.
MEMPHIS CHAPTER OF THE RECORDING ACADEMY®
TO HONOR 2004 MEMPHIS HEROES
AWARDS RECIPIENTS SCOTTY MOORE, BILL BLACK AND D. J. FONTANA.

Proceeds Benefit Recording Academy
Professional Education and Preservation
Initiatives
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Scotty Moore, the late
Bill Black, and D.J. Fontana have been named as the recipients of Memphis
Chapter Heroes Awards. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 13 at
the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts (255 N. Main Street, Memphis) and
will include live performances, awards and video tributes. Performing
artists include Ronnie McDowell, GRAMMY-winning recording artists the
Jordanaires, and three-time W.C. Handy Award winner Joe Louis Walker.
Tickets are currently available at all Ticketmaster locations, at
www.ticketmaster.com or by phone
(901.525.1515). Proceeds will benefit the
Recording Academy's professional education and preservation initiatives in
the Mid-South region.
The Chapter presents its Heroes Awards to honor outstanding artists who have
made an impact on America's music and popular culture. The gala event - a
scheduled part of Memphis' global celebration of the 50th anniversary of
rock and roll - will attract prominent recording artists, key entertainment
executives and community leaders from across the nation.
On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black's recording of
"That's All Right," produced by Sam Phillips for Sun Records, hit
the
airwaves and began a musical revolution. D. J. Fontana was added to the band
in 1955. Elvis of course, discovered ELVIS!, and together, with Sam Phillips
at the controls, they were launched into uncharted territory, fusing country
and blues traditions into sonic rocket fuel, creating a sound so powerful
that, even 50 years later, it still gets hormones percolating. This was the
group that stoked the mass hysteria, the screaming fans, the Presley-mania
that birthed the rock era. Like any great band, the musicians kept changing
and adapting, bringing new things into the mix.
They'd come together pretty much by accident, but that was the team that
Elvis brought up to the majors in 1956. They took the revolution worldwide
on RCA with such seminal rockers as "Hound Dog," "Don't Be
Cruel," "All
Shook Up," "Heartbreak Hotel" and dozens more, records that
have been such
an important part of lives for so long that it's doubtful most people can
remember when we first heard them. Today, you can still see the guys in
their '50s heyday, on the kinescopes of Ed Sullivan and the other variety
shows, and then onscreen in Elvis' early and best films, King Creole, Loving
You, Jailhouse Rock and GI Blues. All three musicians made important
contributions by shrugging off tradition, mixing country and blues and
opening broad new musical territory. They are widely acknowledged as the
first great rock and roll band, influencing rockers of later generations,
including the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Half a century after rock 'n' roll
was born, two of its founding fathers are still rocking hard.
The Heroes Awards is a great chance to see these legendary musicians
together again. It is impossible to imagine musicians more deserving of the
Recording Academy's Heroes Award than Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D. J.
Fontana.
Established in 1957, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences,
Inc., also known as the Recording Academy, is dedicated to improving the
quality of life and cultural condition for music and its makers. An
organization of musicians, producers and other recording professionals, the
Academy is internationally known for the GRAMMY Awards, and is responsible
for numerous groundbreaking professional development, cultural enrichment,
education and human services programs. The Memphis Chapter of the Recording
Academy, through its extensive program of initiatives, member benefits and
education programs, continues to pull the music community together by
developing local pride in the rich musical heritage of the region, and by
offering opportunities to young people interested in pursuing careers in
music. For more information, please visit www.grammy.com.

DISGRACELAND.
Don't be cruel, villagers tell Elvis empire.
VILLAGERS were shaken and rattled yesterday by threats over their Elvis
history. But they are vowing not to roll over after the mega-rich Presley
empire tried to warn them off.
Tiny Lonmay only discovered its links to Elvis's ancestors this week.
But yesterday within 48 hours of the Aberdeenshire village celebrating its
new-found fame, the money men in America were demanding their cut of any
money the villagers make from the connection.
Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc, who control rights to the rock legend's image
from his former home, Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee, said they objected
to unauthorised use of their trademarks.
But media director Todd Morgan added: 'We are always open to hearing
proposals from any entity seeking the appropriate and necessary
permissions.'
Last night, villagers were amazed at the huge corporation's stance.
The Ban Car Hotel has already discussed plans to commemorate Elvis, possibly
by changing its name to Heartbreak Hotel or renaming one of its dining
areas.
Barman Michael Stewart, 37, said: 'I can't believe Graceland are coming out
with this already. The place has been buzzing since we found out Elvis is
linked to the area.
'Everyone thinks it's great and we are planning to hold some kind of
celebration for his birthday.
'We're just having a bit of fun. I think the bosses at Graceland are getting
a little bit carried away.'
Banff and Buchan MSP Stewart Stevenson slammed Graceland's 'heavy- handed'
tactics.
He said: 'They should be flattered to be linked to Scotland. I am sure
whatever they try to do, we will see people coming from America and all over
the world to see where the great man came from.
'This is a gross over- reaction and if Graceland have a look at the
situation they will realise we are a little bit off taking over their
mantle.
'However, this might just spur on the couple of dozen residents of Lonmay to
do just that.'
The row started when Scots author Allan Morrison claimed this week he had
traced Elvis's ancestors back to Lonmay and tourism bosses predicted a surge
in visitors to the village.

EPE Comes Down Hard On Scottish
Village.
The Scottish village which says it's the
ancestral home of Elvis Presley,
has been told by the late singer's estate that it can't use his name.
Lonmay, in Aberdeenshire, has been told by Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc
that they object to any unauthorised use of their trademarks.
The company controls rights to the rock legend's image from his former home
- Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee.
Media director Todd Morgan said: "We are always open to hearing proposals

The Ban Car Hotel had discussed plans to commemorate Elvis, possibly by
changing its name to Heartbreak Hotel or renaming one of its dining areas.
Scottish author Allan Morrison claimed earlier this week he'd traced Elvis's
ancestors back to Lonmay.
Banff and Buchan MSP Stewart Stevenson criticised Graceland's 'heavy-handed'
tactics, says the Daily Record.
He said: "They should be flattered to be linked to Scotland. I am sure
whatever they try to do, we will see people coming from America and all over
the world to see where the great man came from. This is a gross
over-reaction and if Graceland have a look at the situation they will

Reaction Todd Morgan from EPE:
We plead innocent of all charges!
A couple of reporters doing stories on Elvis and Lonmay asked us how we'd
feel about Lonmay's using Elvis to promote tourism there and to do
merchandising. One asked if we object to unauthorized use of our trademarks
- yes, what trademark holder doesn't? One asked what the procedures are for
licensing and how we deal with infringements. These two reporters chose to
make stories suggesting that we were "warning" Lonmay or something
like
that. Absolutely not true.
We've actually not heard from any officials in Lonmay, but we'll probably
try to get in touch to let them know that a couple of recent news stories
are terribly misleading. We work with communities, museums, festivals,
charities and such all over the world with Elvis promotions all the time and
we'll look forward to hearing from the good people of Lonmay should they
want our assistance with something.
We all know how inaccurate the press has been over the years in their
stories about Elvis. It's painful that some of the fans who know this don't
stop and think that the things they read about EPE could be just as
inaccurate. The press, once again, has created a controversy where none
exists. They're very good at that.

Elvis on Cover of Rolling Stone - 50
Greatest Artists.

Elvis Presley is featured in the latest
edition of Rolling Stone magazine as
one of the fifty greatest artists of all time.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rock 'N Roll the magazine includes a
celebrity-written article about each artist. The excellent Elvis feature is
by Bono.
The Immortals are the greatest rock & roll artists of all time. They are
also more than that. The fifty men, women and bands celebrated in the
following pages are the singers, songwriters, record makers and performers
who are continually in the music -- as pioneers, teachers and stars;
touching our souls and pulling us to our feet, on a daily basis -- even when
they are no longer with us. And this is not just a list.
It is a fundamental lesson in the history of rock & roll and its
continuing
power to inspire and transform. The Immortals is a tribute to those who
created rock & roll, written by their peers and heirs, those who have
learned from their innovations, struggles and legacies.
This year, rock & roll turns fifty, and
this is the first of three special
issues Rolling Stone is publishing to mark the occasion. Scholars have
debated the precise birth date for as long as the music has been around. We
chose July 5th, 1954 -- the day Elvis Presley recorded "That's All Right"
at
Sun Studio in Memphis. On that date, the nineteen-year-old truck driver not
only made his first and most important single. He created a new world --
initiating a way of life and expression -- that, even at fifty, is still
evolving. There is no better standard for rock & roll immortality.
The Immortals began last year with the creation of a panel of fifty-five top
musicians, historians, industry executives and critics, selected by the
editors of Rolling Stone. Voters were asked to pick, in order of preference,
the twenty artists they deemed to be the most significant and influential of
rock's first fifty years, those whose work continues to have an impact
today. More than 125 artists were named. The ballots were tabulated
according to a weighted point system that was overseen by the international
accounting firm Ernst & Young.
Rolling Stone then asked a blue-ribbon
collection of singers, musicians and
producers to explore and describe the importance and impact of these
immortals: on the writers' own work and personal lives; on history and
society at large; and on generations to come. The stories and opinions, the
incisive analyses and open admissions of love and influence, are as exciting
and unpredictable as rock & roll itself. Van Morrison repays a lifetime of
soulful debt to Ray Charles. Robbie Robertson describes Bob Dylan typing out
his lyrics as they made Blonde on Blonde. Steven Van Zandt salutes the
original R&B genius of the Rolling Stones and their undiminished prowess
forty years later. Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers pays homage to the raw
power and fiercely independent spirit of Neil Young. And Little Richard
proves to be the world's greatest expert on -- who else? -- Little Richard.
He also makes an important distinction between success and immortality.
"I
wish a lot of things had been different," Richard writes. "I don't
think I
ever got what I really deserved." The Immortals is a commemoration of a
half-century of excitement, ambition and hit records. These are the
musicians and bands who gave us everything
they had, regardless of the
rewards, often against insurmountable odds. Here, Rolling Stone and the
artists who carry on their work try to give them back a little of what they
so richly deserve

Thieves took more than $300,000 worth of Elvis Presley's jewelry from the
museum, including his ruby diamond ring, a high school ring and a diamond
pendant and chain.
With the FBI involved, authorities will be able to search a database used by

information involving the theft of art or artifacts with significant
historical or artistic importance.

Elvis' Military Service Documented In
Exhibit.

The crowd cheers the unveiling of "Sgt.
Elvis Presley: Citizen Soldier"
exhibit spotlighting the entertainer's service in the Army. The exhibit will
be on display for a year.
For two years, Elvis Presley was merely a soldier in the U.S. Army.
Now an exhibit at Fort Knox features photos of Presley's time in the
service, his uniforms, videos of interviews, and various documents and
military paraphernalia used from 1958 through his discharge in 1960.
The Army drafted Elvis Presley and sent him to Germany with an armored
reconnaissance team - a route Presley took instead of opting into the USO
and entertaining the troops.
"He decided to play it straight and turned out to be a very good soldier,"
said Frank Jardim, director of the Patton Museum at Fort Knox.
The museum opened an exhibit Wednesday that will run for a year and document
Presley's time in the Army.
The idea behind the exhibit is to show how the military adapted to having
someone so famous in its midst and how a celebrity handled life as a drafted
soldier.
"Was it a normal military experience? No, it couldn't have been,"
Jardim
said. "That's what we want to show."
The museum arranged the exhibit through Elvis Presley Enterprises, which
controls the King's estate, because the type of training Presley received to
do reconnaissance for tanks is now done at Fort Knox, Jardim said.
Wednesday's opening coincides with the day Presley was inducted into the
Army.
Angie Marchese, archives manager at Graceland in Memphis, Tenn., said
Graceland agreed to the museum's request for an exhibit because Presley
served in the 3rd Armored Division once headed by Gen. George S. Patton.
"Elvis was an admirer of Patton," Marchese said. "Patton was
one of his
influences."
Jardim and Marchese said interest in Presley's Army service is high, with
the military constantly in the news right now.
"People are starting to appreciate that aspect," Marchese said.
"We expect a
good turnout."
The exhibit also depicts how Presley and his manager, Col. Tom Parker, kept
his career alive during the military
service.
On display are Christmas cards showing a young Presley in a soldier's
outfit. Those cards were sent by the thousands to fans around the world,
Jardim said.
The cards were a way for Presley to stay in contact with the legion of fans
that followed him and ease his anxieties about being out of the public eye
for two years.
"Privately, he was worried his career was going to be over," Jardim
said.
"Ironically, it helped him."
Upon his discharge, Presley's popularity remained high. While in the
military, he gained the respect of parents around the country and the
parents stopped objecting to their children listening to his music, Jardim
said.
Presley didn't leave his love of clothes when he joined the army. Tailored
uniforms are on display, although they lack his name tags. Gini Sinclair, a
spokeswoman for Fort Knox, said the military requires the name tags be
removed from uniforms when a soldier is discharged.
"You learn something new everyday,"
Jardim said. "I thought someone would
have ripped them off."
A kiosk will also play "GI Blues," the army-based movie Presley made
right
after his discharge.
"You've got to have a little Elvis music going with this exhibit,"
Jardim
said. "It's great material."

Elvis Presley-Inspired Musical
Jailhouse Rock Opens in London, March 26.
The new London show Jailhouse Rock - The
Musical, which is based on the 1957
Elvis Presley film, will begin performances at the Piccadilly Theatre
beginning March 26.
The show has already played in Plymouth and Manchester. Opening night on the
West End is April 16. It's directed by Rob Bettinson, who also co-wrote it
with Alan Janes.
The show contain 22 songs, some made famous by The King, some by his rock
and roll contemporaries. Titles include "Blue Suede Shoes," "Burning
Love,"
"Suspicious Minds," "Are You Lonesome Tonight," "Good
Rockin' Tonight," "A
Fool Such As I," "One Night," "Pretty Little Angel Eyes,"
"Big Rock Candy
Mountain," "This Ole House," "Always On My Mind,"
"The Wonder of You,"
"Memphis Tennessee," "Tutti Frutti" and eight others.
A theatrical row recently erupted between legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber
and Mike Stoller and the producers of the show. Leiber and Stoller made a
statement, complaining that their song gJailhouse Rockh is not, in fact,
in the show.
The musical's producers, Alan Janes and Jonathan Alver, fired back that
"the
history of rock and roll goes far beyond one song - no matter how good
Leiber and Stoller think their title is" and emphasized that the story is
being used "to explore the origins of rock and roll." They add that
"the
original film contained just seven songs, most of which have been ignored by
history and would not stand up in a West End production."
According to the statement, the producers
did try to get the rights for the
song "Jailhouse Rock" but were rebuffed. "Elvis Presley
Enterprises, Leiber
and Stoller's publishers, were approached repeatedly by us to grant a
license for the song . . . and they repeatedly declined on the basis that
they were creating their own Elvis compilation musical," says the
statement.
"We cannot imagine why they would now want to complain about their title
not
being in our show as they refused our repeated approaches."
Elvis is a hot theatrical commodity lately. Goodspeed Musicals will present
All Shook Up in spring 2004, and commercial producers Clear Channel
Entertainment and Miramax are aiming the show for a 2005 Broadway berth. Joe
DiPietro (The Thing About Men, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) will
pen the book of the original show, which does not have Elvis as a character.
Some 20 songs made famous by Elvis will reportedly be heard.
Additionally, Immortal Entertainment is developing a new musical based on
the relationship and eventual marriage between Elvis Presley and Priscilla
Beaulieu. Immortal's president, David Codikow, told Variety, "[Elvis and
Priscilla] lived their lives as a musical, and now we hope to bring it to
the stage. The story is as much about Elvis
and Priscilla's romance as it is
about the landscape of popular culture evolving before, during and after
their relationship." Because the rights to most of Elvis Presley's songs
are
unavailable, the Immortal project will include other music of the period.
The entertainment company also plans to launch an international search to
find actors suitable to portray both Presleys, who divorced in 1973.

Elvis Presley.

Out of Tupelo, Mississippi, out of Memphis,
Tennessee, came this green,
sharkskin-suited girl chaser, wearing eye shadow -- a trucker-dandy white
boy who must have risked his hide to act so black and dress so gay. This
wasn't New York or even New Orleans; this was Memphis in the Fifties. This
was punk rock. This was revolt. Elvis changed everything -- musically,
sexually, politically. In Elvis, you had the whole lot; it's all there in
that elastic voice and body. As he changed shape, so did the world: He was a
Fifties-style icon who was what the Sixties were capable of, and then
suddenly not. In the Seventies, he turned celebrity into a blood sport, but
interestingly, the more he fell to Earth, the more godlike he became to his
fans. His last performances showcase a voice even bigger than his gut, where
you cry real tears as the music messiah sings his tired heart out, turning
casino into temple.
In Elvis, you have the blueprint for rock & roll: The highness -- the
gospel
highs. The mud -- the Delta mud, the blues. Sexual liberation. Controversy.
Changing the way people feel about the world. It's all there with Elvis.
I was barely conscious when I saw the '68 comeback special, at eight years
old -- which was probably an advantage. I hadn't the critical faculties to
divide the different Elvises into different categories or sort through the
contradictions. Pretty much everything I want from guitar, bass and drums
was present: a performer annoyed by the distance from his audience; a
persona that made a prism of fame's wide-angle lens; a sexuality matched
only by a thirst for God's instruction.
But it's that elastic spastic dance that is the most difficult to explain --
hips that swivel from Europe to Africa, which is the whole point of America,
I guess. For an Irish boy, the voice might have explained the sexiness of
the U.S.A., but the dance explained the energy of this new world about to
boil over and scald the rest of us with new ideas on race, religion,
fashion, love and peace. These were ideas bigger than the man who would
break the ice for them, ideas that would later confound the man who took the
Anglo-Saxon stiff upper lip and curled it forever. He was "Elvis the
Pelvis," with one hand on the blues terminal and the other on the gospel,
which is the essence of rock & roll, a lightning flash running along his
spine, electroshock therapy for a generation about to refuse numbness, both
male and female, black and white.
I recently met with Coretta Scott King, John Lewis and some of the other
leaders of the American civil-rights movement, and they reminded me of the
cultural apartheid rock & roll was up against. I think the hill they
climbed
would have been much steeper were it not for the racial inroads black music
was making on white pop culture. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Creedence
Clearwater Revival were all introduced to the blues through Elvis. He was
already doing what the civil-rights movement was demanding: breaking down
barriers. You don't think of Elvis as political, but that is politics:
changing the way people see the world.
In the Eighties, U2 went to Memphis, to Sun
Studio -- the scene of rock &
roll's big bang. We were working with Elvis' engineer and music diviner,
Cowboy Jack Clement. He reopened the studio so we could cut some tracks
within the same four walls where Elvis recorded "Mystery Train." He
found
the old valve microphone the King had howled through; the reverb was the
same reverb: "Train I ride, sixteen coaches long." It was a small
tunnel of
a place, but there was a certain clarity to the sound. You can hear it in
those Sun records, and they are the ones for me -- leanness but not
meanness. The King didn't know he was the King yet. It's haunted, hunted,
spooky music. Elvis doesn't know where the train will take him, and that's
why we want to be passengers.
Jerry Schilling, the only one of the Memphis Mafia not to sell him out, told
me a story about when he used to live at Graceland, down by the squash
courts. He had a little room there, and he said that when Elvis was upset
and feeling out of kilter, he would leave the big house and go down to his
little gym, where there was a piano. With no one else around, his choice
would always be gospel, losing and finding himself in the old spirituals. He
was happiest when he was singing his way back to spiritual safety. But he
didn't stay long enough. Self-loathing was waiting back up at the house,
where Elvis was seen shooting at his TV screens, the Bible open beside him
at St. Paul's great ode to love, Corinthians 13. Elvis clearly didn't
believe God's grace was amazing enough.
Some commentators say it was the Army, others say it was Hollywood or Las
Vegas that brokehis spirit. The rock &
roll world certainly didn't like to
see their King doing what he was told. I think it was probably much more
likely his marriage or his mother -- or a finer fracture from earlier on,
like losing his twin brother, Jesse, at birth. Maybe it was just the big
arse of fame sitting on him.
I think the Vegas period is underrated. I find it the most emotional. By
that point Elvis was clearly not in control of his own life, and there is
this incredible pathos. The big opera voice of the later years -- that's the
one that really hurts me.
Why is it that we want our idols to die on a cross of their own making, and
if they don't, we want our money back? But you know, Elvis ate America
before America ate him.

JAILHOUSE ROCK TO BE BANNED IN USA.

The songwriters of Elvis Presley's classic 'Jailhouse
Rock', Jerry Leiber
and Mike Stoller are incensed that the UK production behind the new musical
is using their songtitle for a show that doesn't include the song.
In a statement Mike Stoller says "We feel that using the title of our
song
for their show is intentionally misleading the public. This use of a title
that we created is not only misleading, it is, in effect, preventing us from
using our own title for a possible future, legitimate production".
In fact, the only reason the song is not in the production is due to Elvis
Presley Enterprises refusing the company the rights to use it. The stage
show is based on the hit 1957 movie and the production company who had a
global success with Buddy have bought the rights to the story in order to
put on the stage play.
Leiber and Stoller can do nothing about the UK show Jailhouse Rock: The
Musical which opens in London's West End later this month, but say they will
take legal action if an attempt is made to bring the show to America.
"We are not the owners of the copyright outside of the US" Stoller
said. "We
don't know what the legal options are in the UK, but we will fight any
attempt to bring this production to the United States where we do own the
copyright."
Leiber and Stoller wrote not only the song 'Jailhouse Rock' in one
afternoon, but also many of the songs used in the Elvis movie including
"You're So Square Baby I Don't Care," "Treat Me Nice," and
"I Want To Be
Free."

Scotland All Shook Up.
Elvis touched people all over the globe, we
thought it was because of his
music, but now it seems it is because he is related to a lot of people all
around the world. The latest "family" is discovered in a tiny
village in
northeast Scotland.
The city is all shook up over claims that it is the ancestoral home of Elvis
Presley. There is not a chipshop nor cheeseburger to be found in the hamlet
of Lonmay in Aberdeenshire, but a Scottish author has found evidence that
Elvis' great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was married in the
village nearly 300 years ago.
Now the small community hopes it will be placed on the tourist map, with
notoriously obsessive Elvis fans paying homage to roots of the King of rock
n' roll. Parish records show that eight generations before Elvis was born in
1935, his ancestor Andrew Presley married Elspeth Leg in Lonmay on August
27, 1713. Their son, also called Andrew became a blacksmith and was the
first Presley to leave Scotland for America.
Villagers in Lonmay expressed suprise that their sleepy hamlet, which has
one hotel, but no shop, post-office,cafe or school, such be linked with such
a legendary figure as Elvis Presley.

Jailhouse Rock: The Musical to Open in
London Without the Song 'Jailhouse
Rock'.
It seems that something is missing from the new musical entitled "Jailhouse
Rock: The Musical" opening in London's West End later this month.
Ostensibly, this is a stage production reworking Elvis' 1957 film of the
same name. But the song "Jailhouse Rock" is nowhere to be heard and
the
songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller find that using the title
"Jailhouse Rock," which they created for both the film and the song,
is
offensive and misleading to the public.
Back in 1957, with a working title "Ghost of a Chance," Leiber &
Stoller, in
one afternoon, wrote several songs for the film including "Jailhouse
Rock,"
"You're So Square Baby I Don't Care," "Treat Me Nice," and
"I Want To Be
Free." When MGM heard "Jailhouse Rock," they changed the name
of the film
and licensed the title from Leiber & Stoller for theatrical release. Not
one
of the Leiber & Stoller songs from the film is included in this UK theatre
production.
This great songwriting team wrote several other Presley hits including
"Hound Dog," "Don't," "Love Me" and "Loving
You" among many others.
"We feel that using the title of our song for their show is intentionally
misleading the public. This use of a title that we created is not only
misleading, it is, in effect, preventing us from using our own title for a
possible future, legitimate production," said Mike Stoller. He continued,
"We are not the owners of the copyright outside of the US. We don't know
what the legal options are in the UK, but we will fight any attempt to bring
this production to the United States where we do own the copyright."
Other Leiber & Stoller songs that defined the era of Rock & Roll
include,
"Kansas City," "Stand By Me," "Love Potion #9,"
"Charlie Brown," "Yakety
Yak," "Poison Ivy" and "On Broadway" to name just a
few.

2nd To Bowie.
In "The Independent on Sunday" magazine: "The Sunday Review"
they list: "The
Best Dressed Pop Acts in the World Ever !" Voted by 'a panel of pop
stylists, fashion experts and music critics' , the 20 acts listed include
Marvin Gaye at 20, Marc Bolan [18], The Beatles [15], Jimi Hendrix [14],
Grace Jones [11], Madonna [5], & Debbie Harry [3].
David Bowie was the winner, Elvis came in at two.
The blurb says:
The history.
What do you mean the history? This man's history is history.
The look
The tribute acts seem to favour the overweight Las Vegas-era King. Which
might be because that 1950s look could never be replicated.
The verdict
Dylan Jones, says "He was the first pop star and the first youth icon. He
was also the sexiest pop star of them all. At the time he looked as
different from everyone else in Memphis as an alien"
Joe Corre, co-founder of Agent Provocateur, says: "Even when he looked
naff,
he looked good" Of course, they had to spoil it all by putting under the
picture of a slim 60's Elvis in his car: "Yeah, let me see, I'll have
seven
Big Macs, fries and 23 milkshakes please".

Presley says Jackson was not inappropriate.

photo from Lisa's Melbourne press conference.
Lisa Marie Presley clarified her remarks in an Australian TV interview,
saying in a statement Wednesday that she never saw her ex-husband, Michael
Jackson, engage in inappropriate behavior with kids.
Elvis Presley's daughter, on a concert tour in Australia, said in an
interview broadcast Monday that she saw things she "couldn't do anything
about" during her 1994-96 marriage to Jackson.
"I was in no way referring to seeing something inappropriate with
children,
as I have stated publicly before. I never have," Presley said in a
statement
released by her Los Angeles publicist, Paul Bloch.
Without elaboration, Presley said during the talk show interview that she
felt powerless during the marriage to Jackson, who is charged in Santa
Barbara County with child molestation. The interview aired on Australian
Broadcasting Corp.'s Enough Rope.
"Unfortunately, due to the recent media frenzy surrounding Michael
Jackson,
my comments during a recent TV interview in Australia regarding him were
completely taken out of context and erroneously read into," Presley said
in
the statement.
"In saying I saw things, I was specifically referring to things in that
relationship with us that went on between us at the time as husband and
wife," she said.
Her interview comments led to widespread speculation about the 45-year-old
pop star.
Presley said she felt "powerless in a lot of ways, in terms of ...
realizing
that I was part of a machine, and seeing things going on that I couldn't do
anything about," she said. "And don't ask me what sort of things,
because
I'm not going to answer. But just stuff."
Jackson has pleaded innocent to seven counts of performing lewd or
lascivious acts on a child under 14 and two counts of administering an
intoxicating agent, reportedly wine. He is free on $3 million bail pending
trial.

Mississippi May Get Personalized Elvis Tag
The issuance of more specialty tags will
mean extra work for some state Tax
Commission employees. The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill authorizing
license plates with emblems of Elvis Presley, the Home of the Blues, Blair
E. Batson Hospital for Children, the National Rifle Association, Breast
Cancer Awareness and the Professional Hair Designers Inc., among others. The
bill The Senate Bill (2623) must be approved by the House.
Purchasers of specialty tags pay an additional $31 to $51 for the license
plates. A portion of the money goes to the state and to fund projects for
public and private organizations. All of the Elvis Presley tag money will go
to the state.

Police To Quiz Lisa Marie Over Michael
Jackson.

Cops in the US want to question Lisa Marie Presley after she revealed she
had seen "things" while she was married to Michael Jackson. During
an
interview in Australia, where Lisa is promoting her new album, she hinted
that she might have seen Jackson act in an improper way.
According to the Daily Mirror, the 35-year-old recalled, "seeing things
going on that I couldn't do anything about." But she refused to elaborate
on
what she had seen: "Don't ask me what sort of things because I'm not
going
to answer...it's just stuff."
The daughter of legend Elvis Presley married Jackson in 1994 and the couple
split just 20 months later.
Jackson is charged with seven acts of lewd and lascivious behaviour with a
minor and administering an intoxicating agent. In January he pleaded not
guilty to all charges.
Santa Barbara police will question Lisa when she returns from her trip.

John Kerry is the man !!!!

Transition, trial and testosterone on the Kerry campaign
(Yahoo! News / AFP, March 14, 2004)
If Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry is as wooden and aloof as
some say, who is this man doing a lip-curling impersonation of Elvis Presley
for a bunch of bemused senior citizens? "When I was a kid I had the whole
deal down. I had the style, I had the snarl, I put the collar up," Kerry
says, hunching his shoulders, lowering his voice and mumbling "Thank you
very much" in classic Elvis style. But when one of the seniors at the
Levy
Center in suburban Evanston invites him to "shake it up," the
60-year-old
Kerry draws the line. "I know better than to make a complete ass of
myself,"
he says. ..

Blue Hawaii - Coco Palms to be restored?
LIHUE >>Developer Richard Weiser has
announced he has reached a purchase
agreement with the owners of the historic Coco Palms Resort in Wailua and is
going ahead with plans to seek Kauai County permits to rebuild the hotel.
Weiser said he has signed a contract with Wailua Associates LLC, a
California holding company that is listed as the owner of the property.
Weiser did not disclose the purchase amount. Insiders have estimated he will
spend about $100 million to purchase and restore the resort, which has been
closed since Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
Weiser said the contract has several clauses that would void the sale if
certain conditions are not met, including obtaining government permits. The
first permit he is seeking is a county special management area permit,
required for any development in a coastal area.
"Assuming we receive the SMA permit, I'm looking at closing the sale in
late
2004," he said. "We should be under construction in 2005."
Weiser said he will make public his plans for the resort when issues
involving traffic are resolved.
The Coco Palms property has been eyed by the state Department of
Transportation for a portion of a permanent Kapaa bypass. But state
officials have refused to nail down a specific route or plan, and
construction is decades away.
Prospective buyers of the property have backed away for fear the state would
build a road through the property after they put up a new hotel.
Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste has gone on
record saying he advocates a Kapaa
bypass much further inland than the current temporary bypass. He said he
wants a route that would ensure the north and south shores are not cut off
in the event of a tsunami.
The bypass, in Baptiste's concept, would become the primary highway, while
the current Kuhio Highway fronting the Coco Palms would become a secondary
road.
If the state buys Baptiste's reasoning, that might take the Coco Palms out
of the route of a bypass entirely.
"I'd say we are about 80 percent there on that issue," Weiser said.
The 396-room resort, with its distinctive Polynesian architecture, was among
Hawaii's most elegant hotels in the 1950s and 1960s. Many traditions later
emulated by other hotels -- such as the nightly torch-lighting ceremony --
began at the Coco Palms.
The resort also was a popular night spot for Kauai residents.
Weiser has vowed to make the new Coco Palms as close to an exact replica of
the original as possible.
The hotel was full on Sept. 11, 1992, when Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai.
Guests were taken to Kapaa High School for shelter. The hotel was locked and
never reopened.
Coco Palms in its heyday lives on in the 1961 Elvis Presley movie "Blue
Hawaii." Much of the film was shot at the resort, including a lengthy and
lavish wedding sequence aboard a boat in the hotel's famous lagoons.
Weiser, who for years has lived nine months of each year in South Carolina
and three months in Princeville, said he plans to spend almost all of his
time on Kauai for the foreseeable future.

Just seen george micheal perform the song he
wrote about john lennon and
elvis. he performed it on the bbc program parkinson.i must say i was
impressed, its a beautiful song, with quite a haunting melody.
Despite john lennon being named first in the song it is clear that it is in
fact elvis's name that runs throughout the song.
The final chorus is- if jesus is alive and well then how come john and elvis
are dead.
Tell me if jesus is alive and well how come marvin and elvis are dead.
Oh if jesus is alive and well then how come love and peace and elvis are
dead.

Big Al loses his Bernice.
It is with great sadness that we report the
death of Bernice Dvorin, wife of
Al (Elvis Has Left The Building) Dvorin.
She had been battling cancer for sometime.
Our memories of Bernice always make us smile.
A few years ago we invited Al to one of our Elvis conventions here in
Worthing.
He travelled from Chicago with Bernice and we spent a week with them eating
out and enjoying the sea air. Bernice was a strong woman who lovingly
kept
Al in his place, especially when it came to his appetite! Bernice was
lot
of fun to be around and Elvis adored her.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Al and his family.

Serious Fire Damage Averted At Nashville
Studio.
If Charles English hadn't been there working
last night, a Music Row
building containing a studio used by the likes of Elvis Presley and Neil
Diamond might have been seriously damaged in a two-alarm fire.
English, who owns a music publishing company, alerted emergency workers to
the fire that hit the three-story brick and stone office building at 30
Music Square W. about 7:15 p.m.
"You wouldn't normally . think (the building) would be occupied at this
time," said Assistant Nashville Fire Chief Kim Lawson. "That fire
would have
progressed rapidly" if English hadn't discovered it.
The fire wasn't large, started in a first-floor office area and caused smoke
damage throughout the building, Lawson said. The cause of the fire was
unknown, she said, and no one was hurt. The building didn't have sprinklers.
An hour after the fire alarm was called in, firefighters were still trying
to clear out smoke.
"The building itself was opened in 1964 as headquarters for RCA Records
in
Nashville," said Michael Janas, who manages RCA Studio B for the Country
Music Hall of Fame Museum and Belmont University's Mike Curb College of
Entertainment and Music Business.
When the building was completed, Janas said,
it contained mastering
facilities, small recording studios and one studio the size of a large high
school gym and designed to hold a symphony orchestra. It was dubbed Studio A
and the older studio next door became known as Studio B, he said.

Alf Bicknell died.

Alf Bicknell, chauffeur to the Beatles at
the height of their fame and
inspiration for the song, Baby You Can Drive My Car, has died at the age of
75, the band's former promoter said. Sam Leach said Bicknell died at his
home in Oxford on Tuesday March 9. Cause of death was not given. Leach said
the chauffeur started working for the Beatles in 1964 during the filming of
Help. "He was with them for four years including when they met Elvis
(Presley) in 1965," he said. "Alf often recalled with pride how
Elvis called
him 'Sir' during that meeting." Strangely enough, Elvismatters had
contacted
him for a meeting in a couple of weeks for a future happening. Too bad

50th Anniversary Bear Promotion with
Vermont Teddy Bear Co. and Kroger.
Following is a press release from The
Vermont Teddy Bear Company:
Elvis Presley Enterprises Authorizes 50th Anniversary Promotion.
Partnership announced with Vermont Teddy Bear, Kroger, and Regional Bakers.

In honor of 50 years of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley Enterprises and its
licensee, The Vermont Teddy Bear Company, are teaming up to celebrate the
historical recording of Elvis Presley's first song. The Vermont Teddy Bear
Company designed and imported a commemorative, limited edition Elvis Bear 2,
which is licensed as an Official Elvis Presley Signature Item by Elvis
Presley Enterprises. The one-of-a-kind teddy bear will be offered in more
than 750 Kroger stores in six states free of charge with a minimum purchase.
Fifty years ago Elvis Presley recorded That's All Right at the legendary Sun
Studio in Memphis, TN. The recording of Elvis Presley's first single is
recognized as a major event in musical history, and is widely lauded as the
"big bang" that helped launch the Rock 'n Roll Era, changing the
course of
music and popular culture.
The 50th Anniversary promotion brings together The Vermont Teddy Bear
Company, selected Kroger stores in several
states, and a regional group of
independent bakers. This event marks the second time Elvis Presley
Enterprises has partnered with Vermont Teddy Bear Company and a bakery to
offer these limited edition "Elvis Bears" as a premium. In August
2003 EPE
authorized Klosterman Baking Company to offer the "Elvis Bear" in
selected
Kroger Stores. The promotion was one of the stores most successful to date.
The bakers will offer an 8-inch Teeny Tiny Teddy Bear, Elvis Bear 2 designed
and imported by The Vermont Teddy Bear Company, FREE with PURCHASE of
selected products, exclusively through regional Kroger stores. The
promotion, beginning in April 2004, will feature a completely new design for
the Elvis Bear. Each of the specially designed bears is a "one run,
limited
edition" never to be produced again.
Consumers will be asked to use their Kroger Plus Card, in one of the
participating stores and purchase the selected products offered by the
participating baker in that area. Once the minimum number of products is
purchased, the consumer will receive the commemorative, limited edition
Elvis Bear 2 free. The bears will be available in the store, for immediate
delivery to the consumer.
The promotion will run for a limited time in Kroger stores March 29-April
24, 2004. The Elvis Bears 2 will be offered
to consumers only while supplies
last.
More than 750 Kroger stores Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and
Mississippi will participate in the promotion. Major markets include
Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington,
Nashville and Memphis.
The participating bakers and their products include: Perfection Bakeries

D.J. Fontana In Hall Of Fame?

As a high school student in Arkansas, the
Band drummer Levon Helm was lucky
enough to see Elvis Presley perform twice -- once with drummer D.J. Fontana
and once without.
Nearly 50 years later, Helm and three of rock's most famous drummers --
Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts and Max Weinberg -- are leading a campaign to get
Fontana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They signed a letter to the
hall urging Fontana's induction, saying his influence cannot be overstated.
"Elvis and Scotty (Moore) and Bill (Black) were making good music,"
Helm
said, "but it wasn't rock 'n' roll until D.J. put the backbeat into it."
"You can't get better than that!" Fontana said in an interview from
his
Nashville home. Now 70, Fontana performs about a dozen times a year -- on
tour behind Elvis impersonators. Fontana said he, Moore and Black should
have entered the hall together.
"It's a big honor," he said. "I'd like to see the name in there,
but who
knows what those guys up there are going to do."
Seymour Stein, president of the New York chapter of the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame and a member of the committee that helps select inductees, said
there wasn't a consensus on obvious sidemen candidates this year. It's
likely the category will return in the future, he said.
He rattled off names -- Steve Cropper, Jim Keltner, Johnny "Guitar"
Watson
-- of other deserving candidates who haven't made the cut yet. Of Fontana,
Stein said, "his name always comes up. He does get some votes. I think
eventually he will" be inducted. Committee members take seriously the
opinion of rock royalty, but also value the views of fans, he said.

which is licensed as an Official Elvis Presley Signature Item by Elvis
Company, selected Kroger stores in several states, and a regional group of
independent bakers.
24, 2004. The Elvis Bears 2 will be offered to consumers only while supplies
last.
More than 750 Kroger stores Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and
Mississippi will participate in the promotion. Major markets include
Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington,
Nashville and Memphis.
