Interview Alanna Nash with our Columnist Roger Hall
Alanna Nash, author of The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel Tom Parker and Elvis Presley (Simon & Schuster, 2003)

Alanna Nash is a respected journalist who is a featured writer for Entertainment Weekly, USA Weekend, and The New York Times. She is also the author of five books, including Elvis Aron Presley: Revelations from the Memphis Mafia and Golden Girl: The Story of Jessica Savitch, made into the movie, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL.

When asked who helped out the most with her book, she named three main people: Colonel Tom Parker’s niece from Holland, Maria (Mieke) Dons-Maas, who the book is dedicated to; also Byron Raphael, who worked for the Colonel; and Sandra Polk Ross, Parker's stepdaughter-in-law.

Alanna also mentioned her gratitude to other members of the Colonel's family--the van Kuijk clan in Holland; and to Dirk Vellenga and Mick Farren for their groundbreaking book, Elvis and the Colonel. Many others are thoughtfully thanked in the ten pages of Acknowledgments at the front of her book.

In addition to the book, she has a very informative website with the latest news at: www.colonelparker.com

MUSIC LEGEND JOHNNY CASH DIES AT 71.
Fri Sep 12, 7:10 AM

Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black" who became a towering figure in American music with such hits as "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk the Line," and "A Boy Named Sue," died Friday. He was 71.

"Johnny died due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure," Cash's manager, Lou Robin, said in a statement issued by Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

He said Cash died at the hospital at 1 a.m. EDT.

"I hope that friends and fans of Johnny will pray for the Cash family to find comfort during this very difficult time," Robin said.

Cash had been released from the hospital Wednesday after a two-week stay for treatment of an unspecified stomach ailment. The illness caused him to miss last month's MTV Music awards, where he had been nominated in seven categories.

Cash had battled a disease of the nervous system, autonomic neuropathy, and pneumonia in recent years.

Dozens of hit records like "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk the Line," and "Sunday Morning Coming Down" defined Cash's persona: a haunted, dignified, resilient spokesman for the working man and downtrodden.

Cash's deeply lined face fit well with his unsteady voice, which was limited in range but used to great effect to sing about prisoners, heartaches, and tales of everyday life. He wrote much of his own material, and was among the first to record the songs of Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson.

"One Piece at a Time" was about an assembly line worker who built a car out of parts stolen from his factory. "A Boy Named Sue" was a comical story of a father who gives his son a girl's name to make him tough. "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" told of the drunken death of an American Indian soldier who helped raised the American flag at Iwo Jima during World War II, but returned to harsh racism in America.

Cash said in his 1997 autobiography "Cash" that he tried to speak for "voices that were ignored or even suppressed in the entertainment media, not to mention the political and educational establishments."

Cash's career spanned generations, with each finding something of value in his simple records, many of which used his trademark rockabilly rhythm.

Cash was a peer of Elvis Presley when rock 'n' roll was born in Memphis in the 1950s, and he scored hits like "Cry! Cry! Cry!" during that era. He had a longtime friendship and recorded with Dylan, who has cited Cash as a major influence.

He won 11 Grammys - most recently in 2003, when "Give My Love To Rose" earned him honors as best male country vocal performance - and numerous Country Music Association awards. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.

His second wife, June Carter Cash, and daughter Roseanne Cash also were successful singers. June Carter Cash, who co-wrote Cash's hit "Ring of Fire" and partnered with her husband in hits such as "Jackson," died in May.

The late 1960s and '70s were Cash's peak commercial years, and he was host of his own ABC variety show from 1969-71. In later years, he was part of the Highwayman supergroup with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kristofferson.

In the 1990s, he found a new artistic life recording with rap and hard rock producer Rick Rubin on the label American Recordings. And he was back on the charts in with the 2002 album "American IV: the Man Comes Around."

Most recently, Cash was recognized for his cover of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" with seven nominations at last month's MTV Video Music Awards. He had hoped to attend the event but couldn't because of his hospital stay. The video won for best cinematography.

He also wrote books including two autobiographies, and acted in films and television shows.

In his 1971 hit "Man in Black," Cash said his black clothing symbolized the downtrodden people in the world. Cash had been "The Man in Black" since he joined the Grand Ole Opry at age 25.

"Everybody was wearing rhinestones, all those sparkle clothes and cowboy boots," he said in 1986. "I decided to wear a black shirt and pants and see if I could get by with it. I did and I've worn black clothes ever since."

John R. Cash was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Ark., one of seven children. When he was 12, his 14-year-old brother and hero, Jack, died after an accident while sawing oak trees into fence posts. The tragedy had a lasting impact on Cash, and he later pointed to it as a possible reason his music was frequently melancholy.

He worked as a custodian and enlisted in the Air Force, learning guitar while stationed in Germany, before launching his music career after his 1954 discharge.

"All through the Air Force, I was so lonely for those three years," Cash told The Associated Press during a 1996 interview. "If I couldn't have sung all those old country songs, I don't think I could have made it."

Cash launched his career in Memphis, performing on radio station KWEM. He auditioned with Sun Records, ultimately recording the single "Hey Porter," which became a hit.

Sun Records also launched the careers of Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and others.

"Folsom Prison Blues," went to No. 4 on the country charts in 1956, and featured Cash's most famous couplet: "I shot a man in Reno/ just to watch him die."

Cash recorded theme albums celebrating the railroads and the Old West, and decrying the mistreatment of American Indians. Two of his most popular albums were recorded live at prisons. Along the way he notched 14 No. 1 country music hits.

Because of Cash's frequent performances in prisons and his rowdy lifestyle early in his career, many people wrongly thought he had served prison time. He never did, though he battled addictions to pills on and off throughout his life.

He blamed fame for his vulnerability to drug addiction.

"When I was a kid, I always knew I'd sing on the radio someday. I never thought about fame until it started happening to me," he said in 1988. "Then it was hard to handle. That's why I turned to pills."

He credited June Carter Cash, whom he married in 1968, with helping him stay off drugs, though he had several relapses over the years and was treated at the Betty Ford Center in California in 1984.

June Carter Cash was the daughter of country music great Mother Maybelle Carter, and the mother of singer Carlene Carter, whose father was country singer Carl Smith. Together, June Carter and Cash had one child, John Carter Cash. He is a musician and producer.

Singer Rosanne Cash is Johnny Cash's daughter from his first marriage, to Vivian Liberto. Their other three children were Kathleen, Cindy and Tara. They divorced in 1966.

In March 1998, Cash made headlines when his California-based record company, American Recordings, took out an advertisement in the music trade magazine Billboard. The full-page ad celebrated Cash's 1998 Grammy award for best country album for "Unchained." The ad showed an enraged-looking Cash in his younger years making an obscene gesture to sarcastically illustrate his thanks to country radio stations and "the country music establishment in Nashville," which he felt had unfairly cast him aside.

Jennings, a close friend, once said of Cash: "He's been like a brother to me. He's one of the greatest people in the world."

Cash once credited his mother, Carrie Rivers Cash, with encouraging him to pursue a singing career.

"My mother told me to keep on singing, and that kept me working through the cotton fields. She said God has his hand on you. You'll be singing for the world someday."

Cash lived in Hendersonville, Tenn., just outside of Nashville. He also had a home in Jamaica.

From classic Elvis to a next generation Elvis…..possible near Elvis Presley projects
By our columnist Harty

Hi Elvis fans,

once a month in my german Elvis Radio Show “The King strikes back” Iam presenting the songs of Elvis Presley. Last year all DJ’s worldwide played the remix of “A little less conversation”. But this was not the classical Elvis. It was an Elvis tune with more beats, drums and power. So do I in my show. I played the song in more than one show. The listeners loved this version. Many none Elvis fans bought this CD. Again, it was a success of ..well..maybe a next generation Elvis. We are not living anymore in a 1954, 1960 or 1972 Elvis music world.
“there is a big change in the music..the sounds are improved, the musicians are improved…”(Elvis 1968 in his comeback special)

PREVIEW DUAL PRODUCTIONS ON TOUR SPECIAL EDITION VCD

I have just seen this new VCD. The VCD contains different camera angles, Elvis is more close-up and, for the Hamton Roads footage, everything is placed in chronological order, which is very nice and gives the whole a better “live flow”. The sound is surprisingly good and, most of all, in true stereo.

Everyone with high expectations for “unreleased material” will be disappointed. The VCD contains all the footage, official released, from Elvis On Tour and The Lost Performances.

However, many of the new camera angles gives the footage new life and makes a worthwhile viewing experience.

A complete review will follow soon.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG - THOMAS A.DORSEY'S PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND.
By Victor Parachin

Thomas Dorsey's "Precious Lord" has been called "the greatest gospel song of all time." People around the world know it, sing it, and love it because of its profound message of hope and faith. Written in 1932, it continues to appeal deeply to new generations of listeners. Though composed by a young African American blues pianist, the song crosses the lines of race and culture. Everyone from gospel legend Mahalia Jackson to rock 'n' roll king Elvis Presley has recorded it.

Like so many great hymns of faith, the song was inspired by a horrific tragedy in the life of its composer. Thomas Andrew Dorsey was born in rural Georgia in 1899, the son of an itinerant preacher.

By age 12, Dorsey left school to become a professional pianist. He played at house parties throughout Atlanta's black districts.

In his early 20s, Dorsey settled in Chicago. There he played, sang, and published blues compositions under the name "Georgia Tom." Music critic Stephen Calt described Dorsey saying he "ranked as the most self-conscious, serious, and accomplished blues lyricist of his time."

In 1925 Dorsey married Nettie Harper. A year later, he experienced a nervous breakdown and was unable to work for two years. To survive, his wife took a job in a laundry to support them. At the urging of his sister-in-law, Dorsey attended a church service where he experienced a spiritual healing. That event, combined with the sudden death of a young neighbor, prompted Dorsey to commit himself more fully to God and Christian music. To mark his new life, he wrote his first gospel song, "If You See My Savior, Tell Him That You Saw Me."

In 1932 Dorsey accepted an invitation to become choir director of Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church, a position he would hold for nearly 40 years. As the Great Depression wore away at the spirits of Americans, Dorsey viewed his songwriting as an important ministry. He believed his songs "lifted people out of the muck and mire of poverty and gave them ... hope."

In August of '32, Dorsey was scheduled to be the featured soloist at a large revival meeting in St. Louis. At the time he and his wife were living in a little apartment on the South Side of Chicago. Nettie was pregnant with their first child. He kissed her goodbye and made his way to St. Louis for the revival. The next night, as soon as he finished playing, a Western Union messenger came up to the stage and gave Dorsey an urgent telegram. "I ripped open the envelope," he recounted later, "and pasted on the yellow sheet were the words: 'Your wife just died.'"

Dorsey remembered the evening as a surreal moment. "People were happily singing and clapping around me, but I could hardly keep from crying out."

Racing home, he learned that Nettie had given birth to a boy. "I swung between grief and joy," he recalled. "Yet that night, the baby died. I buried Nettie and our little boy together in the same casket." He managed to get through the funeral visitation and service. But when it was all over, he withdrew from family, friends, and even his beloved music. "I felt that God had done me an injustice. I didn't want to serve him anymore or write gospel songs. I just wanted to go back to that jazz world I once knew so well," he said.

In the midst of despair, a friend visited Dorsey and arranged for him to be left alone in a music room with a piano. "It was quiet; the late evening sun crept through the curtained windows," Dorsey recalled. For the first time in many days, he sat at a piano using his fingers to browse the keys. Soon, the young artist experienced a personal revival: "I felt at peace. I felt as though I could reach out and touch God. I found myself playing a melody, one I'd never heard or played before, and words [for "Precious Lord"] came into my head—they just seemed to fall into place."

"Precious Lord" was an immediate and permanent hit. Dorsey himself said, "This is the greatest song I have written." He went on to sing and direct "Precious Lord" at churches and concerts around the world. To date, the song has been translated into 32 languages.

Dorsey died in January 1993 in Chicago, but his legacy thrives. With his innovative blending of sacred and secular styles, he is remembered as the architect of modern gospel music.

THE FINALIZED COVER ART FOR 2ND TO NONE ALBUM.

Ernst confirmed me today this will be the artwork they will release with some text on the frontcover.

Note: It seems on different web-sites some Elvis Fans attack - insult Ernst Jorgensen of being a liar, etcetera on the fact he denied that the new discovered song" I Am A Roustabout" would NOT be added on the 2nd To None Album.
Again I have to stress this is NOT true...

I personally feel those Elvis Fans should be ashamed of themselfs making these kind of false accusations/insults towards Ernst Jorgensen.

Here we publish again our news that was on EPGold.com August 15, 2003 :

I'M A ROUSTABOUT: ELVIS FANS SUPRISED BY BMG.

Many readers of this up-to-date website were really surprised, because after reading the latest exclusive chat with Ernst two days ago on EPGold.

Despite a remark on some other Elvis-websites quote "A remark from Ernst Jorgensen that he NEVER said the 2nd version of "Roustabout would be added to the 2nd To None Album" , is totally changing the meaning of what was said by Ernst Jorgensen.

Ernst did NOT say the song " I'm A Roustabout " , would not be on 2nd To None in his interview two days ago.

He said: It had not been officially CONFIRMED by him or RCA/BMG.

You have to look at what he says very carefully and not alter it in the slightest.

That is why the suprise : "I'm A roustabout" , is kept quite by Ernst Jorgensen and RCA/BMG till today for the Elvis fans.

NEW AND LIMITED: HELLO FROM DALLAS.

Out now is the very limited import-CD "Hello from Dallas via Satellite". This soundboard CD (no CDR) contains the June 6th 1975 concert, as recorded at the Memorial Auditorium in Dallas, Tx. The concert has been released many times before (both on the 8LP/4CD-set Elvis Aaron Presley, as well as thru the Dutch fanclub It's Elvis Time). All we can say, is that this is a great sounding CD with a unique, yet very familiar looking cover. Only 300 copies were made worldwide... so; happy hunting everyone!

DUKE BARDWELL MESSAGE ABOUT HIS UPCOMING APPEARANCES IN BELGIUM AND HOLLAND ON OCTOBER 18TH AND 19TH.

Duke Bardwell on the road with Elvis, 1974.

Hello.
My name is Duke Bardwell and I was the bass player in the TCB Band from January, 1974 until April of 1975, performing almost 200 shows with Elvis.
This is my first time ever to come to Europe and my wife and I are really looking forward to it.

I want to thank the fan clubs for making this possible and for putting together such a fun show.
I can't wait to ROCK with Terry Mike Jeffrey, to see my old friend Charlie Hodge again and to celebrate Elvis and his music.

Until then God bless you all.
Duke Bardwell.

MORE ABOUT THE FAKE REVIEW : IN THE EYES OF THE STORM AT ELVISNEWS.

Since our original complaint on EP Gold about the fake review on ElvisNews, they changed the contents a bit, which shows that they know that they are wrong.

However, the review is still seriously flawed in several respects. It criticizes Gear Productions for the use of two interviews, with Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana, by Arjan Deelen. They add that the interviews can be found on EIN.

Well, since Deelen is one of the participants in this project, why wouldn't he be allowed to use HIS OWN interviews? The fact that he was so kind to allow EIN to use his interviews, so that all fans have access to them, shows that he is more of a real fan than the folks at ElvisNews. In conclusion, some very strange reasoning from ElvisNews!

They also complain about the scanning (or printing) of the images as if it's a general problem, yet only a couple of images are grainy. Not surprising considering the age of the material.

They write that the CD is interesting, but yet they do not describe the mystery tracks and their background, and the amazingly authentic renditions by Number Nine are not commented upon either. We think that this is a bit weird: after all, isn't that the purpose of a review? Or did they choose not to review it, because they could not find any flaws?

Also, the TV Guide interview gets a short mention, but no information whatsoever about this interview or the rarity of this complete version.

Moreover, they conclude by saying that "at the price of 22 Euro we paid a lot for the complete TV Guide interview and a fan club like magazine", which is yet another example of their bizarre reasoning. First of all, it's strange that they mention the retail price that one dealer sells it for, and then in another sentence they mention a retailer that sells it cheaper - huh?!?

It's clear that they have some sort of axe to grind, but in that case they should just stop reviewing product. This type of reviewing is dishonest and unprofessional.

For a more objective and better balanced review we recommend the one that you can read on EIN: http://www.elvis.com.au/ein/review_intheeyeofthestorm_piers.shtml

Gear Productions.
