SOMETHING REALLY ECXITING FOR MY FRIENDS.

One of my dearest and closest friends Ken Vrana - Caitlin Production,Inc who
made a 10 hour film -documentary on Elvis and where I just finalized a brand
new song with, now has something exciting to tell the Ep.Gold readers.
For reactions or contact Ken Vrana e-mail : KVRANA@nc.rr.com

Dear Friends,

As you know, Caitlin Productions, Inc. is a non-profit documentary film company, dedicated to producing films that will help make this a better planet. In the last few years we have done films on the problems in Northern Ireland, The Special Olympics, the devastating Indian earthquake, a 10-hour documentary on Elvis Presley and a film on adoption. Perhaps the film we are most proud of however, is called “Snow Angel’s,” which follows three women through a year of their lives, all of whom have breast cancer. The creation of a film is much like giving birth, and while we experienced many a low moment when we first began, each day it becomes more and more clear, that there was in fact another angel looking over my shoulder. That angel was Linda McCartney.

Once the film was completed, we decided to dedicate the film to Linda and in an even more wonderful demonstration of love, Sir Paul McCartney and Sarah McLachlan provided the music for the film. Words cannot express my gratitude to Paul, but fortunately I’ve been given the opportunity to give back to Paul and Linda, by being given permission to approach you about helping with a wonderful event. On October 21, 2003, The Garland Appeal, the organization founded by Mr. Stephen Connock, following Linda’s death, will be holding a GALA and AUCTION, commemorating Linda’s amazing life, at Christie’s in New York.

I was asked if I’d be willing to contact all my friends and see if they’d like to contribute an item or two of celebrity memorabilia to the event. I was both humbled and honored to do so, and as I know that you hold Paul and Linda in the same esteem as I do, I feel sure you’ll want to help. I know that anything you’d be willing to donate, from a autographed guitar or pair of drum sticks, to a script, item of clothing or photo would be hugely appreciated and I am so blessed to have friends like you, who I’m not embarrassed to approach.

If you would like to help out this wonderful organization, please e-mail me back at your earliest convenience and let me know what you’d like to donate. I will then put you in touch with the folks who will take it from there. The older I get the more I value having all of you in my lives and I know that you’ll want to help. In the meantime, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,

Ken

PHILIPS'S VISITATION IS LIGHT- HEARTED.
By Michael Donahue

Elvis Presley's recording of That's All Right played while guests filed past the casket of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips Wednesday at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
"We couldn't have a visitation without Sun playing," said Jerry Phillips, one of the sons of the man who discovered Elvis and released his first recordings and those of a list of pre-eminent rock and roll and rhythm and blues artists.
A thousand people attended the four-and-a-half-hour visitation. Phillips died July 30 of respiratory failure at St. Francis Hospital after a long illness. He was 80.

Davia Nelson, one of the "Kitchen Sisters" of San Francisco, who chronicled Phillips's life on National Public Radio's Lost & Found Sound, was impressed by the recording of Moanin' at Midnight playing in the background. "How many times do you go to a chapel and hear Howlin' Wolf?" she said.
Nelson said she once asked Phillips the name of his favorite flower because she wanted to send him some. "He said, 'Sunflowers, of course.' "
Jerry and his brother, Knox, their mother, Becky Phillips, and Sally Wilbourn, Phillips's long-time companion, were among those greeting guests near the open casket. Sam Phillips was dressed in a dark double-breasted blazer, a white collarless shirt and wore brown-tinted sunglasses. A large yellow Sun logo made of flowers stood near the casket.

Laughter could be heard among the guests as they shared memories of Phillips. "I know he'd want us to have a jovial spirit," Jerry said.
Knox wants today's memorial at the Cannon Center to be slightly "irreverent," because that's what his dad would have wanted. "Not morose or down - a celebration," he said.
The visitation was scheduled to open to non-family members at 3:30 p.m., but by 3:45 p.m., guests were still waiting to get in the chapel.
"This is typical Phillips. Makes you wait," joked former Shelby County Mayor Bill Morris.

Morris was working at S. C. Toof & Co. when he met Phillips. He sold him office furniture for Sun Records on Marshall. "Those creative juices were working. You could just feel it."
James Alexander of the Bar-Kays said, "He was just like us musicians - eccentric, but right straight to the point."
Jerry Schilling, a friend of Phillips and Elvis and former head of the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission, said he'll remember Phillips for his "belief and passion in the human spirit and his courage to promote that."

"He just had a great ear for music," said Ken Lovelace, who's played guitar for Jerry Lee Lewis for 37 years.
"His contribution to modern music is seminal and his family is a living legacy to everything he accomplished in his 80 years," said Mike Post from Los Angeles. Post, who composed music for TV's Law & Order, NYPD Blue and Dragnet, is a family friend.
"He was humble enough not to rattle his credentials. Always," said Sam 'the Sham' Samudio. "He left a wide furrow and I don't think there'll be anyone to plow another one like it."

Scotty Moore, Elvis's long-time guitarist, remembered when Elvis recorded That's All Right at Sun on July 5, 1954. "I'm the last one who was in the room that night - me, Sam, Elvis and Bill Black."
As he listened to that Elvis recording, movie director Craig Brewer said, "It makes you realize Heaven's rockin' tonight."
A public memorial tribute will be at 4:30 today at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. Doors will open at 4 p.m. A private burial will be held earlier today at Memorial Park Mausoleum.

SAM PHILIPS QUOTELUNQUOTE.

Sam Phillips quoted (as told to The Commercial Appeal)

"When you're talking about music, now that's my soul."

On starting Sun Records:
"I just had to try. It was as much a part of me as breathing. One way or the other, I was going to try it no matter at what risk. I can tell you that was not the social circle you'd think you'd have being an employee of the number-one radio station at that time [WREC]. I don't think anybody in their right mind thought it was going to do any harm or any good. That's the way they felt about it: this is just something he is jacking around with . . . Anyway, we see what happened."

"Sun gave (musicians) hope. That was the main thing. Without my dedication, they would not have had the opportunity. That's simply the way it was.

A lot of those people, their names never became anything close to a household word. Do you know how important that was at that time that I recorded them?"

On seeing Beale Street for the first time in 1939:
"When I came into Memphis on an early morning Saturday, it was raining about 4 o'clock, in a '37 Dodge rumble seat going to see a great preacher in Dallas, Texas. I was going to have religion. And I tell you, when I got on this street that I wanted to see - I lived in Florence Alabama, at that time, home of W.C. Handy - when I saw this street at 4 o'clock on a Saturday morning, pouring down raining, there was something spiritual about (it)."

"So many of these great independent labels then that started before we did, I think they just hung around with black artists, which was wonderful. But I knew some country boys that had white skin that was black and I knew some that had black skin that was Southern white in their feeling about music."

On telling a concert promoter who was worried that Sun's rock-and-roll acts wouldn't know what to do professionally on stage:
"Not knowing how to get on stage - that's part of their act!"

On Blue Suede Shoes:
"God, I needed money to promote that thing. This was in December '55 and I was always told never to release a record in December because it's old hat as of January 1, whatever year it is. And I always released my records in December, I sure did. I guess I got lucky and got away with it. 'Cause I made sure that first year every body had them and I didn't let them get old because I was on that phone a lot and in that car a lot."

On rockabilly:
"I always hated (the term) rockabilly. I hated country-and-western (too) because it was two different things. Hillbilly I didn't mind too much, but when you stuck rock in front of billy . . . to me it was rock and roll. Whether it was black rock and roll or white rock and roll, it was rock and roll!"

On Howlin' Wolf:
"The Wolf I really think would have been the counterpart of Elvis. If he hadn't left me and been towed away by Chess in Chicago, this guy would have been huge with white youngsters along with black.

"You will always take something to your grave that you regret. I'm not going to take very many things because I've been too blessed. But I guess I'll take to my grave not having the Wolf around."

September's issue of Jane magazine.

August 5, 2003
-- LISA Marie Presley literally oozes sex appeal in this pouty, pin-up shot heating up September's issue of Jane magazine. Lisa Marie bemoans that she's currently "nowhere" with her love life and reflects on her ill-fated marriages to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. Elvis Presley's only offspring says she hates the fact that Jackson owns the rights to some of her late dad's songs, telling Jane: "I saw a Velveeta commercial, and it was playing, I think, 'Burning Love.' [Jackson] had approved it - that's something we can't control. He can do whatever he wants with the songs he owns to make money, and that got under my skin." The lovely Lisa Marie also bristles at the notion that Elvis aficionado Cage married her because she was the King's daughter. "[Nicolas] is so [bleeping] talented and he's got an Academy Award, but no, he's got to be downcast to be an Elvis fanatic, you know? It's demeaning and completely unfounded."

Donna Presley Early is the daughter of Elvis Presley's aunt "Nash". Nash, the younger sister of Elvis's father Vernon, cared for the young Elvis when he was growing up and was his friend and advisor until his death. In 1967 Donna and her family moved to the Circle G Ranch that Elvis had purchased. They remained there until Elvis sold the ranch in 1970. At which time Donna moved to Graceland with her family after her father, Earl Pritchett accepted an offer of employment from Elvis. Troops Hunting Saddam Say Their Prey Is 'Elvis'

He used to be Mr. President, The Leader (May God Preserve him) or The Respected General.
Now Saddam Hussein is HVT No. 1, a "high-value target" to U.S. troops in Iraq, sometimes the Ace of Spades, as he appears in a deck of "most wanted" cards, more often just "The Big Guy."

But to the soldiers of the 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry Regiment out of Fort Hood Texas who are spearheading the hunt around Saddam's home town of Tikrit, he is simply "Elvis."

Not content with the Pentagon photofit images of what the elusive dictator may now look like, their mess hall in one of his palaces sports a doctored official portrait showing a now coiffed and sideburned Saddam under the title "Elvis Lives!."

Inspired by countless supermarket tabloid "sightings" of the late rock legend, troops say they are on Saddam's trail.

"Course we gonna get Elvis," said one senior officer. "Last I heard he was working in a Burger King down in Tikrit."

A DEDICATION TO SAMUEL CORNELIUS PHILIPS.

Today it is a sad day for us and all the Elvis Fans WorldWide.
I would like to dedicate a song I wrote and produced a couple of years ago for Sam Philips to keep his memory alive.

Listen to : "Looking Through The Window".

Dear Andylon,

your song "Looking Through The Window" really moved me. I've met Sam Philips
while in Memphis back in 1992. In my opinion he was such a nice person. I
know you for over 10 years now and I want everybody to know that you're a
real kind and lovin' person. I'm proud to be your friend,

Sincerely,
Robin Klarenbeek

I really loved Andylon's tribute song to Sam Phillips. It's song both
melodically and lyrically and seems to touch the spirit of Sam's ability
to see and hear things well ahead of the pack. Who know, had it not been
for him and his secretary where we'd all be. He touched a lot of people,
and could still say whatever he was thinking and people loved him
anyway. I saw him a few years ago at the annual dinner that is held
during Tribute Week and he was still as loud and cranky as ever.
he'll be missed but thanks to Andylon's song, he'll not be forgotten!

My Dearest Andylon.
As you know I am a big fan next to Elvis of your music you have made through the years.

I also have been one of the few people in the Elvis World that know and heard maybe more than a 100 songs you wrote and produced in the past (And this is only a part of all the hundreds of songs you wrote)

This is indeed one of the songs that has moved me for a long time. Looking Through The Window is a sincere dedication to our big lost in the Elvis World : Sam Philips.

Dick Dekker.
We from Praytome Publishing and Bud Glass Productions are very sad that the Elvis-World lost for the second time such a big name in the Elvis - World. First we lost the wonderful JD Sumner and now the great Sam Phillips. The World will never be the same!

Hi Andylon,

This is one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard and a sincere dedication to Sam Philips I will never forget when ever I play this song over and over again.

Thank you
Robert Frieser.
Andylon,

There are times in our lives when a tragic event makes us stop and put things into perspective.
The impact that Sam Phillips made on the music world has forever changed history as we know it.
There are also times in our lives when a song is heard, and it just seems to somehow fit into the feelings that we are experiencing over such a time as this.
Your song "Looking Through The Window" is a very touching and beautifully fitting tribute to Sam Phillips.
I hope more people get a chance to hear it. I know they will be as moved by it as I am.

Your friend,
Bud Glass
Hello Andylon,

Shivers over the back of my neck... "Looking Through The Window" , to me is as a journey through feelings, moments every one of us must experience one or another moment in life.

Truly very beautifull and a very true and honest song!! A wonderfull and precious dedication to Sam Phillips!

All the best,
Niels Zandstra
Hi Andylon,

WOW your song as a dedication to Sam Philips is just beautiful!!! Really, really nice.
I enjoyed it as well as my wife thought it was also beautiful.

Your Friend,
Russ Howe.
Dear Andylon,

The song you wrote and dedicated to Sam Philips is such a beautiful song it really touched me.

Always Elvis,
Joyce Gijzen.
When I heard your song Looking through the window it really hit me, it is noto nly because it is dedicated to Sam Philips.

But the song it self moved my heart and I just wonder what kind of state you were at the time writing such an incredible song, that has so much heart feeling sensitivity on the mysterious melody that is like easy wave of the sea and suddenly the melody and words become strong and so emotional.
This is SO beautiful.
This is a nice gesture from you to dedicate this song Looking through the window , for Sam Philips.

Thank you.
Erik van den Berg.

IF I CAN DREAM: GANDHI, ELVIS SHARE VISION.
By Michael Donahue

Mohandas Gandhi and Elvis Presley were alike in at least one way, said Lalit Mansingh, India's ambassador to the United States: They cared about children.

The ambassador was the special guest at the Gandhi Exhibit Inaugural Gala presented by the Indian Community Fund for Greater Memphis Friday night at Woodland Hills. The dinner followed an inauguration ceremony for the exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum. The exhibit was installed in April for the 35th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's death.

During his speech before dinner, the ambassador concluded with some words "from the most famous son of Memphis, Elvis Presley."

He quoted Elvis: "I figure all any kids need is hope and the feeling that he or she belongs. If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world."

The ambassador said, "It is difficult to imagine two more dissimilar personalities than Elvis Presley and Mahatma Gandhi. And yet the words of Elvis Presley are strangely close to Gandhi's thinking when he said that he dreamt of an India where he would be able to wipe the last tears of the last child."

The ambassador said he was impressed with the National Civil Rights Museum. "I was expecting to feel his (King's) presence and I did when I to the museum."

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR THE LATE SAM PHILIPS.
Sun Aug 3,12:00 AM ET

Tributes for Sam Phillips, the legendary producer and founder of Sun Records who died on Wednesday (July 30), continue to pour in. Phillips who was 80, was often called "the inventor of rock and roll."

At Sun Records, the record label and recording studio he founded in Memphis in the early 1950s, he discovered Elvis Presley--in addition to launching the careers of countless rock and country music stars including Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, B.B. King and Conway Twitty.

In a statement, Johnny Cash said, "Sam Phillips was a good friend. I'll miss him very much. He didn't just create rock and roll, he helped create me." Sun Studios, which Phillips sold in 1969, was designated as an historical landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior on Thursday (July 31).

LAUNCH spoke with industry insiders and friends about the late Sam Phillips:

Dick Clark said: "Sam was a one of a kind. He discovered so much talent in a short length of time. The big question was, why did he sell his rights in Elvis to RCA for $35,000? I'm sure he must have asked himself that question many times."

Todd Morgan, director of media for Graceland and Elvis Presley Enterprises said: "One can't help but wonder how different Elvis' life and career would have been, or how the world of music and pop culture would have been different, had Sam not been there, at that moment. Sam was a nurturing presence in the lives of a lot of musicians. He contributed so much to our community, here in Memphis, and to the world."

Howard Kramer, curator of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, said he was impressed by Phillips’ confidence. "Sam Phillips was the kind of personality that whenever he walked into the room every eye turned," Kramer said. "He just was an amazingly commanding presence; the type of confidence that you don't see anywhere. Literally, his mythic nature was founded in the fact that he really was this otherworldly type of guy." Sam Phillips was inducted into the Hall's first class, in 1986, alongside Sun Records' artists Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Anthony DeCurtis, well-known writer for Rolling Stone magazine, music critic, and host of VH1's the A-List With Anthony DeCurtis discussed Phillips role in the history of rock music. "Sam Phillips really was on the ground zero of what became the big bang of rock and roll," DeCurtis said. "He was one of the architects of this sound. And even more than the sound, which was important enough, he was almost a kind of architect of the sensibility, the idea that you could cross racial lines, cross musical lines. You know, he always talked about rock and roll as fun."

Jerry Schilling, a friend of Elvis Presley's since the late '50s and member of the "Memphis Mafia," said Phillips' impacted more than just rock and roll. "My friend was Elvis Presley and my hero was Sam Phillips," Schilling said. "Sam had the eye and the vision of knowing what American music and black music, blues and R&B was all about it. You know, Sam was the godfather of the whole thing." Schilling was a consultant for the documentary This Is Elvis, and executive producer of the A&E Biography program, Sam Phillips: The Father Of Rock n' Roll.

Memphis TV and radio personality George Klein, a lifelong friend of Elvis Presley's since they were in school together at Homes High, said Phillips paved the way for many rock and rollers. "Cutting to the chase, Sam Phillips was the Godfather of rock and roll. He's the guy that didn't open the door, he kicked it down when it came to music and had those acts walk right on through. The guy did a tremendous thing for the world of music."

Leading Elvis Presley expert Stephen Christopher, who has appeared on radio stations around the world, challenging fans to stump him on Elvis trivia in a show called "Elvis On The Air," said Phillips was also a humanitarian. "He's a super personality," Christopher said. "If you've seen him, you know that and he's going to be sorely missed. Quite active in a lot of charity, helped raise money for a lot of good causes. He was still out there and so alive and vivacious, much younger than his years would indicate, that this was really a sudden, tragic surprise to everyone."

Bill Beeny, owner of the Elvis Is Alive Museum in Wright City, Missouri, said Phillips was an important part of Elvis' career. "I think that Sam Phillips was without question a very vital part of Elvis' career, where otherwise he could've either gone unnoticed and been a star burned-out before its time, or her could've ended up playing in honky-tonks the rest of his life," Beeny said.

James Burton Tickets are selling like Hot Pancakes

Tickets for the upcoming concert in Mol, Belgium, featuring Elvis’s lead guitarist James Burton are selling incredibly fast. Two months after the first announcement, no more than 100 tickets are still available. The VIP-section is completely sold out. But then again… is this a surprise? The show on October 11th is the very first (and only?) live show in this part of Europe to feature James Burton Solo in Concert. Of course, James gets vocal support by (among others) Jenson Bloomer, but the selected songs are all guitar-greats. This show puts the spotlight right there where it belongs: on James’s wonderful guitar pickin’. Maybe… just maybe he’ll do “Johnny B. Goode” with his Fender to the back of his head, like he used to do when touring with Elvis.
The James Burton In Concert show is put together by the Belgian Fanclub “Elvis Matters”. Tickets are 35 euro. Other than most “Elvis shows”, fans don’t have to pay extravagant prices for a drink. All drinks are 1,50 euro.
Another advantage: every member of Elvis Matters that attends the show in Mol gets a – hear this! – free 8 track sampler of the Close Up Box. This deal was made possible by the support of BMG Belgium. On top of that, members of Elvis Matters get a 10 percent discount on ALL CD’s, books, T-shirts, souvenirs… Honorary members even get a 15 (!) percent discount.
So here’s a good piece of advise for y’all; don’t wait too long to order your tickets. Once the beautiful showroom is sold out… the showroom is sold out.

THERE WILL BE A PRIVATE BURIAL TO FAMILY MEMBERS ONLY.
Statement from the Phillips Family.

Sam Phillips died at the Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis Wednesday evening, July 30, 2003 at the age of 80. He had been in ill health for some time and was recovering at home. While watching the Chicago Cubs baseball game, he died of respiratory failure.

Sam’s belief in the individual, his dedication to giving a voice to those who had never previously had a voice, served as an inspiration not just to the world, but to his family as well. He was a communicator and a teacher first and foremost, and the lesson that he taught to his friends and family as much as to the artists that he recorded was: Be yourself. Trust yourself. Be the best self that you can possibly be in your own way.

Sam leaves Sally Wilbourn, Becky, Knox, Jerry and Roxanne Phillips, Kim Phillips (granddaughter deceased), Diane Duncan, Halley, Justin, and Preston McAlexander.

The family requests any memorials be sent to the Sam Phillips Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis School of Music.

BMG PLANS SECOND ELVIS COMPILATION CD.
By Thomas Clark.

BMG, the US-based music company owned by German media giant Bertelsmann, plans to roll out a $10m campaign this autumn for a new compilation record on Elvis Presley, according to people involved with the project.

With the worldwide campaign for the CD, called Elvis 2nd to None, which is set to be released in early October, BMG plans to follow last year's unexpected success with an album of number one hits from the King of Rock ´n Roll.

The jubilee CD, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death, was BMG's biggest sales-hit in 2002, selling over 9m units. This was second only to Avril Lavigne's "Let's go", which sold over 10m, and outstripped the new album sales of current pop stars such as Santana, Christina Aguillera and Pink.

BMG, one of the big five music groups, last year had only about 30 records that sold more than 500,000 units, according to the company. The Bertelsmann subsidiary, with is currently in merger talks with AOL?s Warner Music, made a profit of E252m on revenues of E2.7bn in 2002.

While it is unlikely that last year's Elvis sales success can be matched, BMG has high hopes for the new record, shipping more than 1m units to US retailers alone.

With the majority of the campaign budget going into television and radio advertising, the company plans to sell about 4m-4.5m by the end of the year, half as much as Elvis 1.

Given that the margins for a catalogue product such as this tend to be higher than a new album release from a living superstar, this sales target will still boost BMG's stretched balance sheet.

"The margins are always higher with catalogue products, as you don't have to pay the typical superstar royalty", said Joe diMuro, executive vice-president at BMG's strategic marketing group.

EMI, the UK-based music company, sold more than 20m units of a similar memorial CD for the Beatles in 2000, making it by far the top seller in that business year. However, the spread of music piracy and illegal CD burning makes it almost impossible these days to achieve such sales.

GROUP PLOTS TO ENTICE ELVISFANS.

Elvis Presley was born here; pretty soon his fans can be buried here.
In January, William and Linda Kinard purchased nearly 16 acres of land to be developed into Elvis Presley Heights Memorial Gardens.
The pair developed the plan to provide plots for Elvis fans more than a decade ago when they watched observances on TV in memory of the King of Rock n' Roll.
"We thought it would be a great idea for the fans," said William Kinard, president and CEO of Fans Forever.

The Kinards and their partners first looked for a potential site in Memphis, then someone told them about a place called Elvis Presley Heights off Briar Ridge Road, just a stone's throw from Lawhon Elementary School, where Elvis attended, and a mere hop, skip and jump from his birthplace.

"It was amazing to find a place in walking distance from his house," William Kinard said.
The city of Tupelo has approved initial plans for the cemetery, but the project design still needs to be submitted for final approval by the city.
In a name As many fans know, "Elvis" and "Elvis Presley" are registered trademarks of Elvis Presley Enterprises, which declined opportunities to be part of the project.

"We don't use Elvis Presley," William Kinard said. "We always use Elvis Presley Heights."
There will be no statues or salutes to Elvis on the cemetery grounds, but a four-room shotgun shack on the property will house portions of Becky Martin's collection of memorabilia. Martin was one of Elvis' childhood friends.

The project does have an official Presley presence. Donna Presley Early, Elvis' first cousin, has been hired for public relations duties.
"We think this will really appeal to his fans," she said. "It's a tribute."
An official ground-breaking will take place 10 a.m. today at the site behind the Dollar General on East Main Street.

After that, Fans Forever will begin taking money for plots ($2,500), mausoleums ($5,000), urn niches ($1,500) and more. For information, check www.elvispresleyheights.com

THE SUN RECORD COMPANY AWARDS PARTY IN CONJUCTION WITH THE INTERNATIONAL ROCK A BILLY HALL OF FAME INC. AND ROCKABILLY FEST 2003.

THE INTERNATIONAL ROCK-A-BILLY HALL OF FAME INC. is Located at 105 North
Church Street, Jackson, Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockabilly Fest 2003 will be the world's largest gathering of rockabilly history makers. The event begins with the SUN RECORDS AWARDS PARTY at the Garden Plaza Hotel, Jackson, Tennessee on August 7, 2003.

HONOREES AT THE SUN RECORDS COMPANY AWARDS BANQUET

BRENDA LEE - THE LADY AND THE LEGEND

"Atomic Little Brenda Lee -- 9 Year Old Sensation." That was how Brenda Lee was introduced in October 1956. Later, she was dubbed "Little Miss Dynamite," and that nickname stuck because she earned it. Too often, a child performer's career is over by the time he or she hits puberty, but Brenda Lee is still rocking fifty years after first stepping up to a microphone.

Brenda Mae Tarpley, as she was then, won a talent contest in Atlanta when she was six, and first appeared on television the following year. In late 1955, she was introduced to country star Red Foley who was headlining a package show in her hometown, Augusta, Georgia. Foley hosted "The Ozark Jubilee" on ABC radio and TV, and brought Brenda onto the show. After the

"Jubilee," she made television appearances with Perry Como, Steve Allen, Ed Sullivan, and Bob Hope, and played weekend hops ... all sandwiched between her school schedule. It wasn't until Brenda cut "Sweet Nuthin's," a song by rockabilly singer Ronnie Self, in 1959 that she finally scaled the upper reaches of the charts. Self then wrote Brenda's first Number One hit, "I'm Sorry," which topped the charts in July 1960. For most of her career, Brenda recorded in Nashvilleunder the guidance of the late Owen Bradley. The success of "I'm Sorry" convinced Bradley that she could handle more adult material, and it was one of the first records cut in Nashville to use strings. Bradley himself summed up her approach when he said, "She has a tremendous beat and rhythm that a lot of singers don't have. She has a big voice and is able to get the rhythm and beat into her voice that a lot of singers can't do. She'll not only sing to you, she'll preach to you. The first thing she gives you is a dramatic reading of the lyric. A good singer must be involved with the words of the song. Brenda does that. She can sing any type of song." In 1963, Brenda signed an unprecedented 20-year contract with Decca (now Universal) Records, guaranteeing in excess of one million dollars. It was the richest deal ever awarded a female singer. Decca was obviously convinced that she had a long-term future in the music business, and they were right. After a brief retirement following the birth of her first child, Brenda became a mainstay of the country charts; dueting with legends like Willie Nelson, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, and Kitty Wells. In 1964, when Brenda was performing in Mexico City, there was an earthquake. Most Americans, including other performers, left town in a hurry, but when the Mexican press asked if she would still go on-stage, Brenda Lee cocked her head to one side and said, "If the walls are still standing, I'll be singing."

ALL THE KING'S MEN

In July 1954, Elvis Presley made his first record, "That's All Right," for Sun Records. Dee-jay Dewey Phillips was the first to air it, and a tape of Dewey's show plays exclusively at the INTERNATIONAL ROCK-A-BILLY HALL OF FAME, INC. in Jackson, Tennessee.

The SUN RECORDS AWARDS BANQUET honors several of the musicians, background singers, and engineers who worked with Elvis during his earliest years while he was developing the sound that changed the world.

THE JORDANAIRES

One Sunday afternoon late in 1954, the Jordanaires played a show in Memphis. Backstage, they were introduced to an up-and-coming local singer by the name of Elvis Presley. There were a few polite exchanges, then Elvis said, "If I ever get a recording contract, I want you guys to back me up." Thinking back to that night, the Jordanaires' Gordon Stoker remembers wishing Elvis well. "But we never expected to hear from him again," he said. "People were always coming up and saying that." In April 1956, "Heartbreak Hotel" was No. 1, and Elvis was in Nashville for a session. Gordon Stoker was there. Afterward, Elvis took Gordon aside and told him that he'd like to use the Jordanaires on all future sessions. This time, the Jordanaires said they'd be there. True to his word, Elvis brought the Jordanaires onto nearly every one of his sessions for the next fourteen years. At a time when no backing musicians, producers, or engineers received a name-check on an Elvis record, the Jordanaires alone were mentioned. It was enough to earn the Jordanaires "Group of the Year" awards well into the Beatle era.

Elvis had heard the Jordanaires every Saturday night on the Grand Ole Opry. Formed in 1948 in Springfield, Missouri, they arrived in Nashville in 1949, immediately securing a coveted berth the Opry. "We were the first white quartet to sing spirituals," Gordon Stoker asserted. "It was music that moves, that you can snap your fingers to." In 1950, Gordon Stoker and Hoyt Hawkins replaced the original lead tenor and baritone, and in 1953 Neal Matthews became the second tenor, leaving bass singer Culley Holt as the sole survivor of the original quartet. That was the group that backed Elvis on his Fifties sessions, appeared in his movies and on many of his landmark television appearances. Holt left in 1958, and was replaced by bass singer Ray Walker. This line-up accompanied Elvis until 1970, but didn't follow him to Las Vegas. They stayed in Nashville, and were never short of work. Hoyt Hawkins died in 1982, and was replaced by Duane West.

In addition to their work with Elvis, the Jordanaires backed Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins, and virtually every other major name in country music during the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies. "Back around the time of our first hit record in 1953, a record producer told us to forget about the hit parade," Stoker remembered. "Stars are here today and gone tomorrow. The industry needed good back-up singers. We didn't think he was telling the truth, but boy, was he ever. For twenty-three years we had two to four sessions a day, six days a week." They're on records that have sold a combined 26 billion copies. The Jordanaires' influence has passed into the mainstream of popular music. When Gordon Stoker met Paul McCartney, he remembered the former Beatle telling him, "When Elvis' records came out, we listened to the vocal backing harmonies. They encouraged us to sing harmony."

DON ROBERTSON.

Here's a rare treat for Elvis collectors. No more endless out-takes, these are the original demos that Elvis heard of some of his greatest songs, all performed by the songwriter, Don Robertson. Among the Elvis classics heard in their absolutely original version are They Remind Too Much Of You; Anything That's Part Of You; Starting Today; There's Always Me; Love Me Tonight; I Met Her Today; What Now, What Next, Where To; and I'm Counting On You.
In addition to writing for Elvis, Don Robertson also invented the famous 'slip-note' piano style popularized by Floyd Cramer, and we hear several great examples of his work on this collection.
Something truly different...and something truly great. Elvis fans and anyone intrigued by the art of the popular song will love this
set.
