Return Of The King - Elvis In Concert 1997

Today we recieved our copy from "Return Of The King - Elvis In Concert '97" First we can say one thing this is NOT a cd-recordable or any other home made CD. This is a real import cd. This one came out of nothing.
This one is released on the label "Tupelo" it seems that they released another three titles, more info when we have it. "Polk Salad Annie" is incomplete
It contains the concert from August 16th, 1997 - Elvis In Concert. The front cover says that it's a soundboard recording i can tell you this...this is a real sounboard recording. But the sound is not that good, there's not enough bass in it, but too much mid and treble. Although it's not a bad release after all. The coverart is fantastic! they did a real good job. Total tracks on CD are 57.

STARS IN CONCERT PRESENTS : A TRIBUTE TO ELVIS JANUARY 3rd - 19th, 2003.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Elvis' passing in August 2002, Bernhard Kurz set up a hommage for the King of Rock'n' Roll. Contemporaries and friends of Elvis share a piece of their own history with Elvis by presenting a unique show. Paul Casey from USA hosts the show together with Sonny West, Ed Bonja, Estelle Brown and Myrna Smith from the Sweet Inspirations. Similar to the technique of Elvis - The Concert shows, Paul sings the Elvis songs with a live band, and in the background, you see Elvis Concert footage. The show is a journey through Elvis' life and starts with tunes from the 50's. The Sweet Inspirations do a fantastic job as background singers, especially when the play the Gospel Scene from the 68 Comeback Special. The show ends with the well known songs from the 70s like My Way or American Trilogy. You are wrong when you call the show a concert. Between the songs Elvis' friends come on stage and share the stories they know best. Sonny West for example was together with Elvis when they met President Nixon. The audience is invited to ask additional questions. Of course, the songs and stories are in english but there is a interpreter translating everything into german language. The show was a huge success when it was here in Germany for the first time in August. The showroom was sold out every evening with around 400 hundred persons. I attended the show twice and it was very interesting so that I will head for Berlin in January again. Show time is Wednesdays - Saturdays at 8:30 PM, Sundays at 5:00 PM. Tickets are available for 20-45 Euros by calling +49 306831-6831 [German customers call: 030/6831-6831]

Elvis For Everyone Christmas Gift

This was the gift from the Elvis For Everyone fanclub we received at the
meeting.
We did get our free CD at the door. The CD contains only interviews...but that doesn't matter. It's a very nice gift, it has good looking coverart. They used the same as the import LP "Behind Closed Doors" and as the last fanclub magazine. But the quality from the photos are REAL good. Keep up the good work EFE.

Real Fun On Stage...and in the studio!

Another new product. This CD contains most of the oneliners en spoken words, taken from RCA, Soundboards or other interview CD's. The coverart is quite simple. And very quick made. But still it's a nice compilation for your collection.
We think this is a bootleg. Total tracks on disc: 40

ASHEVILLE ELVIS FAN HAS KEPT ROCKIN SOUVENIR THE KING GAVE HIM 27 YEARS AGO.

In the world of celebrity souvenirs, it doesn't get much better than what Mike Harris has: Elvis Presley's guitar.
"A lot of neat stuff has happened with this guitar," Harris said this week as he held the instrument in his Asheville home. Normally, he keeps it in a bank vault.
As the nation prepares to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Elvis' death, Harris remains awestruck at how he came to possess the king of rock n' roll's Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar.
It all goes back to a July 24, 1975, sold-out show at the Asheville Civic Center. Harris was sitting front row center - pretty heady stuff for a 21-year-old college kid and Elvis megafan.
"I'd seen all the movies, listened to all the records - I grew up wanting to be Elvis," Harris said.
The king was barely into "C.C. Rider" when he walked over to Harris and changed his life.
"I said, `Mike, Elvis keeps looking at you,'" said Harris' wife of 25 years, Debbie, who was sitting next to Harris at the show. "That's about the time he bent down and tossed him the guitar. He told him, `Hold onto to that. Hopefully, it'll be valuable one day.'"
Much of the night is a blur to Harris, but he still clearly remembers the exchange.
"He struck a couple of licks on it, and then he just came to the edge of the stage and held it out by the neck," Harris recalled. "He said, `This is yours.'"
Elvis also gave away two rings that night - worth thousands of dollars each - to fans sitting near Harris. Harris and Debbie got a police escort out of the concert.
The next day, Harris took the guitar back to Western Carolina University. Needless to say, many a college student has played it, but the guitar is still in great shape.
Worth $1,400 just as an instrument, the guitar features a mother-of-pearl inlay spelling "Elvis Presley" in the neck, gold-plated tuning keys, a "Kenpo Karate" placard Elvis glued on the body, and assorted nicks and scratches from Elvis' enormous belt buckles and gaudy rings.
Built in 1968, the guitar appears in dozens of Presley pictures, and several album covers and movies, including "Aloha from Hawaii" and "Elvis on Tour."
"He used it for quite a while," said Todd Morgan, director of media and creative development at Graceland, Presley's Memphis, Tenn., estate. "It's rather well-known."
So, what's it worth today?
"A guitar like that which is related to specific historic moments and documented with film and photos, it's extremely attractive to a collector," Morgan said. "For it to be in the tens of thousands of dollars would make sense."
Graceland has 15 of Presley's guitars - by no means all the guitars he played during a 23-year career. Morgan has corresponded with Harris about acquiring the guitar.
"We'd love to have it," Morgan said. "But I guess the kind of money Mike would want for it is beyond our acquisitions budget."
Harris has rejected serious offers of $125,000 and $200,000. A schoolteacher for years, Harris now works as a sales manager for Pfizer.
Ironically, the 48-year-old, balding father of three has become an unlikely Elvis impersonator himself, playing corporate banquets and opening the Ingles Food Show every year. Known as "Big E," he makes no pretense to looking like Elvis, but he can really sing.
"He not only has a beautiful voice and sounds just like Elvis, he just gets a great thrill out of it," Debbie Harris said.
Harris does not use the Elvis guitar in shows, however. It remains safely stored in an Asheville bank vault. So far, he's not been seriously tempted to sell.
"I'd love to get tons of money out of something like this," Harris said. "I'd pay off mortgages and colleges and maybe be able to breathe a little bit. But then again, do I really want to let go of something like this?"

In the All Times American Album Chart none of Elvis's albums feature in the top 200!
The highest entry is The Eagles Greatest Hits 1971-1975 having shifted over 27 million units. The lowest entry on the top 200, an album by Billy Ray Cyrus, shifted 9 million units. In contrast The Beatles have 11 albums well placed. We wonder if ELV1S 30 # 1 Hits will make an entry.

KEN VRANA PRODUCER 6 HOUR ELVIS DOCUMENTARY "TRIBUTE - REMEMBRANCES OF THE KING" TO BENEFIT BREAST CANCER.

Hi,
My name is Ken Vrana and I am the CEO of Caitlin Productions, Inc. We're located near Raleigh, North Carolina here in the United States. Caitlin Productions makes feature-length documenty films, but prior to my move here to the Carolinas 9 years ago, I was a writer and producer in LA.
Caitlin Productions is a non-profit company and 100% of all the revenue from the profits of the films we do, less production costs, are given to charities around the world. Recently I had to wonderful good fortune to be introduced to Andylon over the internet and within hours of that initial meeting we have already begun to finish each other's sentences. It's amazing given the time, space and geography that things like this is possible, but thanks to the technology, it is. We have put our heads together and decided to partner on a number of projects and Andylon has graciously provided this page and the EP Gold website as a vehicle to make it all happen. This is a particularly exciting opportunity, for all of us here at Caitlin Productions, and we hope that you will check back often as we will be doing our best to make the world a better place to live. Meanwhile, I
know I'm preaching to the choir when I say we're doing our best to TCB!
Ken Vrana.
1. "Snow Angels," the film I did on breast cancer with music by Paul McCartney and Sarah McLachlan is being premiered all over the US. ( click on the menu : Reviews)
(Hello and Tired of Bake Sales.) The proceeds from the premiers are going to breast cancer charities all over the US.
2. The Ribbon of Life (see our column : reviews) is a separate, though related project and we are asking people to send in as many buttons as possible.
3. The Elvis film is presently 6 hours long but may end up longer. The proceeds from the film go to charities E was involved in during his lifetime like Baptist Hospital, The Memphis Trauma Center etc. We have interviewed over 200 major celebrities and over 300 fans.
4. The premier of the Elvis film, called "Tribute - Remembrances of the King," will be held in Las Vegas but we don't have a date yet. Eventually it will be available on DVD and Video.
5. This trip to Nashville this week is our last after traveling over 85,000 miles doing the film.
6. We are currently planning premiers of the breast cancer film in 16 US cities. 3/4 of all the money raised from each premier goes to charities in the town or city where the premier takes place. The remaining third comes back to us for production costs. Any organization wishing to raise funding can host a premier and we'd love to do a few in the UK and Europe. Hope that clarifies things a bit.
The original title from the film was "To Elvis With Love" but was changed to the aforementioned Tribute.
Soon Andylon will have an exclusive interview with the Producer Ken Vrana for Ep.Gold.

SWEDISH ELVIS LINK.
"The song journey 'O Store Gud' " is a documentary film about the Swedish background of the song which gave a Grammy to Elvis! The songtitle in English is "How Great Thou Art". The film opened in the Swedish town Jönköping, in the middle of the Swedish "bible belt", this December.
The producer Niclas Wimmerberg managed to portray the importance and distribution of the song. It starts in Mönsterås, where Carl Boberg created the hymn in 1885. A lot of footage in the documentary is shot in the U.S.A., where Niclas travelled over 6000 kilometers by car. Elvis importance for the song is shown in many ways, but also the importance of others.
This film will be shown first in some movie theaters in Sweden and hopefully on TV this spring. For Elvis fans in Sweden is it important that this connection between Sweden and Elvis through this song is documented.

AEROSMITH & ELVIS NEWS FROM THE ROAD.

Fresh off the Thanksgiving break we headed to FW the afternoon of the show. On the way from the plane to the gig Tom and Joe were reminiscing about how many times they played at this particular venue. It's weird because for them walking into an old venue like the Memorial Coliseum must be like walking through he halls of your old high school for you and me. It turned out to be a great show and a great crowd and the debut of Andrew WK.
Andrew WK hit the stage and the place was like, What the F*&K! Who is this guy? But, by the end of the set he got the crowd on his side. He has been doing that in every city. I have a feeling he is going to go over well in Detroit. I hear he's a nice guy and signs autographs and talks to fans at a T-shirt booth after his show. You can also find him by the side of the stage with the rest of his band checking out Aerosmith every night.
Memphis: Memphis is one of my favorite cities. We always have a ball in Memphis and this trip was no different. I mentioned a while back that at the Sacramento show Elvis's old tour manager and friend Joe Esposito came to the show with his family and chatted with the guys for a little bit before the show. Well, Joe Perry invited Joe Esposito to come out to Memphis and hang out for a few days. Well, he did and Joe P. and I went to Graceland the day after the show for a private tour. As you guys might have heard the story that Joe was at Graceland the day Big E died and he tried to revive the King but to no avail. It was pretty eerie walking through the house with a guy that lived there for a period of time. It was the 10th visit to Graceland between us it this was by far the most informative tour we have taken of the old shack.

Earlier in the day we hit Cozy Corner Ribs for a "lite" lunch before the tour. If you're in the area check them out. Try the cornish game hen.
This is another weird thing that happened in Memphis. I was walking out of the hotel with Steven and Kripa (Steven's Assistant) that same day of the Graceland tour. It was around midnight and we were just out for a stroll. We turned the corner on Beale street and you could hear this blues music coming from BB King's Blues Club. As we get closer you can see and hear the band playing in the window. I said wow these guys sound great and Steven said yeah and the guy in the middle looks a little like Brad Whitford. Well, as you guessed it! It was Brad and he had been going down to that same club and jamming with The BB King All Stars for 3 nights in a row. We stood by the window and caught the last song before closing. Brad is slippery and you never know where he will end up in any given town.
Wichita is another place where the band hit in the early years of touring. The place was packed and the people were nuts and had a ball. After the gig we went straight to Denver.

Denver is a really cool city. On Saturday they had "the Festival of lights." It was a parade that went right by our hotel. It kept the band pretty much confined to the hotel until things quieted down. After that Joey, Steven and their security guard Donnie went to the movies. (Sorry, slow news day guys).
I just heard that the movie Brad is in called, "This Thing of Ours" is slated to be released nationwide in the early part of the year. Brad has a small but powerful part of a wise guy who ends up on the wrong side of a bottle. I'm told it's a kind of new age mafia movie that stars James Caan, Vincent "Big Pussy" Pastore, Good Fella Frank "Go get your F'N Shinebox" Vincent and Pat Cooper. Joe Perry contributes a couple of instrumentals to the soundtrack as does Vindaloo Music's main man Mike Verge who penned the tune "Connected" for the flick.

NEW FTD CD PITTSBURGH '76 ( WILL
BE A TWO CD SET FOR ONE PRICE )
RELEASE DATE FEBRUARY 15th, 2003

Hi Ernst,
First of all I would like to let the Ep.Gold readers to clarify some questions about the new FTD CD release : Pittsburgh '76.
As we know the Pittsburgh show last for 90 minutes, that means it has to be a 2 CD release on the FTD Label.
Yes, Andylon it will be a 2 CD set for the price of one. And we will add some unknown bonus tracks.
That is GREAT news for the Elvis Fans, Ernst.
Any title yet?
No, we still thinking of a title.
I know this GREAT audience tape as a quality of sound and it is maybe the best Audience tape I ever heard next to the Audience CD : Adios, are you planning to
go into the studio and work on the sound quality to make it even better,? Than I know for sure this is the BEST audience CD that will be ever released.on Elvis.
Yes, we are working on that now.
Mind you , I know this tape is Monoraul, will you maybe use the recipe like the Producer David Bendeth used? lol.
Yeah, Andylon make it 5.1 lol ...... no, we want to keep it the way it is, just joking.
Well , RCA made a good year in 2002, now we want to make it happen in 2003 with the FTD - label.
We have some GREAT projects for the coming year.
I know you are so busy doing this, but when will the FTD Website go on the Internet, Ernst?
Because of the success with Elvis Worldwide in 2002 and working for the projects in 2003, the FTD Website is on hold for the moment.
Maybe for 6 - 12 Months.
Will you make it to release the FTD CD : Elvis International before Christmas?
If everything is planned the way we want it, it should be released next week Tuesday.
That's great news all in all, Ernst., will call you next week and now wish you a Merry Christmas.
The same to you, Andylon and also to all the Ep.Gold readers.

NEW RELEASE FROM ROCK LEGENDS – HOLLAND:

“CRAZY – The Funny Side of Elvis Presley”
It’s Elvis Time is proud to present “CRAZY - The Funny Side of Elvis
Presley”, a remarkable 80-minute behind-the-scenes insight into the real Elvis. Over the years, Elvis the man has become overshadowed by his larger-than-life image, a fact which Presley himself hinted at during his New York press-conference on June 9, 1972. With this release, we want to give the listener an insight into the human being behind the legend, and we decided to focus on one of his most memorable character traits: his wonderful sense of humor. People from his inner circle remember him as someone who loved to laugh and have a good time. The recordings on this CD were carefully selected from hundreds of hours of Elvis on stage, during interviews, and in private with friends. You will hear Elvis as he really was: joking about his image, his career and even his health; having fun on stage with J.D. Sumner, Kathy Westmoreland and the Sweet Inspirations; enjoying himself with friends at a private party; and even imitating Bill Cosby and Peter Sellers. His friends nicknamed him “Crazy”, and somehow it seemed appropriate to use this as the title for our CD.
If you want to own only one ‘talking Elvis’ CD in your collection, then make sure that it’s this one. Most talking CD’s are usually just played once and then filed away forever, but thanks to its unusual theme, the unique material and the clever editing, this CD is actually a lot of fun to listen to. It’s eighty minutes of the real Elvis having a great time – a very special way to remember the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. Packaged in a beautiful deluxe multi-panel digipack featuring 16 amazing full color shots from the Laurens van Houten collection, this remarkable CD is a wonderful addition to any Elvis collection – and a great gift for your dearest friends.
Collectors’ Notes:
- Contains rare and unreleased soundboard dialogue from concerts 1969 – 1977.
- Contains ALL the unreleased dialogue that was edited from the Memphis 1974 concert by RCA – it’s not even on the ‘Steamroller Blues’ bootleg! For many years, collectors discussed the possible existence of a false start of ‘Help Me’ – well, it’s here! Not only that, but we’ve also included a fragment that was edited out of the ‘I Got A Woman’ / ‘Amen’ medley! For this release, we were able to work from a copy of the STEREO mastertape.
- Segments from the original soundboard tape of the July 24th, 1976 concert in Charlotte, N.C. (and not the horrible fifth generation copy that was used for the ‘Hurt’ bootleg) in terrific sound-quality.
- Contains Elvis singing one-liners of a.o. ‘For Once In My Life’, ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘Hawaiian Wedding Song’.
- Special bonus: two rare interviews from Hawaii.
Tracks:
“Hey young man…” / Dressing Room Talk ; Elvis Does Bill Cosby ; “A Stonecold Natural Freak!” ; Elvis Talks About His Liver Biopsy… ; …And His Broken Finger ; Even Kings Do It… ; Joking With J.D. Sumner ; Sound Bites ; On Top Of His Game ; A New Year’s Eve To Remember ; Sweets For My Sweets ; Ode To A Robin ; Foolin’ Around With Kathy Westmoreland ; Memories Of Getting Married In The Movies ; The Sick Aloha Eagle ; The Hermit Meets The King ; The Girl From ‘The Exorcist’ ; Memphis, March 20, 1974 – “outtakes” ; On The Set Of “Blue Hawaii” 05/61 ; The Hilton Hawaiian Village Press Conference 11/20/72 ; Elvis ‘Clouseau’ signs off…

ELVIS ALIVE AND WELL IN MEMPHIS?
Wilson Air Center in Memphis has opened a pilot business centre which it says is designed specifically with the flight crew in mind. The 400 square foot area was created by a professional design team.
Perhaps of more interest to visitors, however, is the fact that Elvis is alive and well and on stand-by to greet their aircraft. Wilson Air Center vp Dave Ivey said: “From the world’s largest aircraft canopy and the new celebrity lobby to having Elvis greet your aircraft, I personally want to make your stay memorable.”
With regard to the pilot business centre, a spokesman said: “We determined that the new business centre would be equipped with four distinct areas based on the needs and work habits of pilots who visit the FBO. The first area features three three private cubicles each equipped with high-speed internet access.” The next area is designed for the laptop user, complete with electric and internet connections; the third area accommodates the pilot who wants to spread out on large open tables; and the last area is for additional flight planning.
The spokesman added: “We recognise that the majority of the flight crews we receive are transient customers who, on average, spend two to 12 hours at our location.
The project, which started in August, was just recently completed on October 25 and has met with rave reviews from pilots.”

"Elvis said we don't pay attention, most of us, that we float through life. And I really noticed this as time as passon on, that most people float, and it's just whatever you call getting by. THE DUTCH CONNECTION.
Probably it is not an explanation for the fanatic Dutch fans, but it turned out that Elvis has Dutch roots too. Elvis is a straight descendant of Teunis Elisassen, from the small Dutch town Bunschoten. Teunis moved to America in the second half of the seventeenth century and took the name Van Bunschoten. Six generations later the connection with the Presley family came when his descendant Minnie Mae Hood married Jessie Presley. As we all know it turned out that this couple became Elvis’ grandparents.

BOOKING AGENT BILL MILLER WHO BROUGHT ELVIS BACK TO LAS
VEGAS DIES.
Executives of the International Hotel thought entertainment director Bill Miller was nuts when he booked Elvis Presley into the showroom in 1969.
With the popularity of groups like the Beatles and Rolling Stones, Presley was old news, they thought. No way could he draw a crowd.
Not only did Presley fill the showroom night after night, but the relationship between the resort that is now the Las Vegas Hilton and the King of Rock 'n' Roll re-established a legend's career and cemented Las Vegas' place in the world of live entertainment.
Bill Miller, the man who linked Las Vegas with Elvis, died Monday at his home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 98. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs.
Miller's other booking coups included Mae West, Sammy Davis Jr., Sonny and Cher and Barbra Streisand, but Presley was Miller's biggest triumph. Presley had bombed in Las Vegas early in his career, but when Miller brought him back to town, Presley racked up more than 700 sellout performances at the Hilton between 1969 and 1976.
"My husband got quite a bit of heat from those who feared the act would fail," Denise Miller, Bill's wife of 34 years, said. "But he told them to trust his judgment because he knew what he was doing."
That judgment made him a legend among entertainers, longtime friend and entertainer Sonny King said.
"Bill Miller meant to Las Vegas what (flamboyant Broadway producer) Billy Rose meant to New York," he said.
"Bill had a compassion for entertainers because he had been one."
Miller started as a dancer in the 1920s and had worked on the same bill at New York's Hudson Theatre with King's dad, Georgie, and his uncle Joe, who performed as the King Brothers. By 1928 Miller left the stage and became an agent.
Sonny King was manager of New York's famed Copacabana nightclub in 1954 when Miller, then entertainment director at the Sahara hotel, booked him to work the Sahara lounge.
"I asked him where is Las Vegas?" said King, who today performs at the Bootlegger. "He said, 'You may not know where Las Vegas is, but when you get there you won't want to go back to New York.' He was right. I never left Las Vegas."
Entertainer Pete Barbutti came to Las Vegas in 1960 to perform with his group The Millionaires at the New Frontier, where Miller was entertainment director.
"It was a miserable stay, so for our last show, I insulted the place and the audience started laughing, thinking it was part of our act," Barbutti said. "What we didn't know was that Bill was in the audience with Donald O'Connor. After the show, he booked us for another seven months.
"He was our boss, but he also was our friend. He understood what entertainers are all about."
Miller made the Sahara lounge the town's premier hot spot, booking Louis Prima and other top acts. He later did the same thing at the New Frontier's Cloud 9 Lounge, booking Della Reese and Billy Eckstein.
Jean Bennett, longtime manager of the Platters, said Miller as entertainment director of the Flamingo in the 1960s, booked her group there several times.
"He was one of the best entertainment directors Las Vegas ever had," she said. "He knew talent very well and he gave great advice to performers."
Born Nov. 27, 1904, in Russia, Miller came with his family to the United States when he was a baby, as they escaped the persecution of Jews. Miller was raised in Brooklyn and quit high school during the Great Depression to go into show business.
During World War II Miller owned and operated the Riviera nightclub in New Jersey, where Frank Sinatra and other top stars performed. One of those acts, the Will Mastin Trio, featured a young Sammy Davis, whom Miller helped launch to stardom in Las Vegas.
Miller came to Las Vegas in 1952, when Milton Prell opened the Sahara. Two years later Miller booked the aging but still attractive screen legend West into the Sahara.
He would go on to book Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, a struggling Sonny and Cher and many other acts into Las Vegas lounges and showrooms.
"My husband's word was his bond," Denise Miller said. "He only started doing written contracts late in his career because times had changed. But for most of his career he was proud that he did his business on a handshake."
Miller went from the Sahara to the Dunes to the New Frontier to the Flamingo, which then was owned by billionaire developer Kirk Kerkorian. When Kerkorian opened the International in 1969, he brought Miller with him. Miller booked Streisand to open the 2,000-seat showroom, followed by Presley the next month.
Miller also was a former co-owner of the Royal Nevada and at one time owned interests in the Dunes, Sahara and New Frontier resorts.
He retired to Palm Springs in the mid-1970s.
In addition to his wife, Miller is survived by two daughters, Judy Miller of New York, and Susan Miller of Desert Hot Springs; Calif., a stepson, Jerry Johnson of Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Molly Vine of Miami, a grandson Michael Miller of London; and a granddaughter Dina Miller of New Jersey.
Miller was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Miller, longtime record producer for the Rolling Stones and other rock groups.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG...... T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
T-R-O-U-B-L-E" spelled "H-I-T" twice for songwriter Jerry Chesnut. The rollicking, rocking song about a barroom entertainer cracked the Top 15 for Elvis Presley in 1975 and again for Travis Tritt in 1993.
"Some people thought I had written it about Elvis," notes Jerry, who penned the hit in 1975. "But it was really about a guy named David Wilkins, who used to play at Ireland's restaurant in Nashville in the '70s."
David performed under the name "Little David Wilkins," although he was anything but diminutive, weighing in around 280. Though he enjoyed mild recording success, he desperately needed that one big smash.
"He asked me ... actually he bugged me," Jerry laughs, "to write him a hit. So one morning, I started thinking about him and the place he was playing. David was a great showman - he played piano like Jerry Lee Lewis and he'd go out on the dance floor and get right in the middle of everyone. I thought I'd just paint a picture of that and see where it would get me."
Jerry fell into "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" by calling on his own past experiences. "I'd played enough bars and clubs to know that when you're up there on the stage, you can see trouble starting," explains Jerry with a booming laugh. "You see everything on that dance floor - jealousy, anger, fights.
"I also knew," Jerry adds, "that when a good-looking woman walks into a place like that - alone - there's usually trouble. With all that running through my mind, I just kept on writing."
And as he wrote, he came up with a bright idea - completely by accident. "I was writing down the word 'trouble,' spelling it out, and I started seeing it as individual letters," recalls Jerry. "Then I spelled out 'a-l-o-n-e' and ' l-o-o-k-i-n-g,' and they all rhymed! I thought, 'Well, this is fun!' But it wasn't something I had set out to do. That's just how it came out."
The song ended up with two slightly different versions. "Elvis kept 'piano' in the first verse, which is how I'd written it," reveals Jerry. "When Travis recorded it, he changed it to 'guitar.' I think both of them did fantastic jobs."
But what about its original target, David Wilkins? "He asked me one time why he didn't get to record the song," admits Jerry. "I told him the truth - because Elvis wanted it!"

ELVIS 30 # 1 HITS ALBUM AMONG BILLBOARD''S TOP ALBUMS OF 2002.
ELV1S 30 #1 HITS is at #36 in Billboard's year-end roundup of the top albums of the year 2002. Quite an achievement, especially considering the fact that E1 did not come out until September of this year and has not yet finished its time on the weekly Top 200 Albums chart. This is his first appearance in the year-end roundup since 1973, when his #1 hit album Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, via Satellite came in at #28 for the year.
ELV1S 30 #1 HITS debuted on Billboard's weekly Top 200 Albums chart this fall with a 3-week run at #1. Recently, it was at #26 on the weekly chart when, primarily as a result of the airing of the Elvis Lives special on NBC on Thanksgiving night, it leaped back up to #11, where it now sits for the second week. Thus, Billboard gives it the "pacesetter" designation for being the album currently with the biggest percentage growth in sales. The album also hit #1 on Billboard's country chart, where it now sits at #4, also with the "pacesetter" designation.
On the Billboard Music Awards televised on Fox earlier this week, it was acknowledged that Elvis has the record for the longest span of time between an artist's first #1 album and latest #1 album. His first album, Elvis Presley, hit #1 in 1956 and his tenth and latest #1 album, ELV1S 30 #1 HITS, came 46 years later (and 25 years after his death).

AMERICAN VETERANS AWARDS INTRODUCES THE ELVIS PRESLEY BEST PATRIOTIC SONG AWARD.
This year, the American Veteran
Awards, a project of Veterans Foundation, Inc. has introduced a new award - the Elvis Presley "Best Patriotic Song" Award - at their 8th annual awards banquet, which took place in late November. It will be televised on the History Channel in February. The first Elvis award was presented to country duo Brooks & Dunn for their song Only in America.
The AVA contacted Graceland/EPE earlier this year to make us aware of their plans to name the award in honor of Elvis and ask our cooperation and assistance. Our thanks to the AVA for this wonderful recognition for Elvis and our congratulations to Brooks & Dunn for being the first recipient.

BROOKS & DUNN ACCEPT ELVIS PRESLEY AWARD.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn were committed elsewhere, and so couldn't accept the first-ever Elvis Presley Patriotic Song Award in person.
Instead of attending the dinner where the American Veterans' Awards were presented, Brooks and Dunn received their award for their song, "Only in America," on the set of CMT's "Most Wanted Live" show last Saturday night.
"You don't do songs for the rewards. You do songs because they strike a chord in you and make you feel something," Dunn said.
Brooks, who wrote the song, says they didn't know when they released it that it was anything more than a celebration of this country. He says it was tragic - and also made them proud - that it ended up meaning something more to other people after last year's terrorist attacks.

VINYL RULES AT NASHVILLE'S UNITED RECORD PRESSING.

A banner hanging in United Record Pressing's shipping room gives a peek at what the Nashville company hopes for its future:
''Vinyl Rules! Pure analog, anti-digital revolution.''
Today's youth, with their compact discs and MP3 players, may know little of their lower-tech predecessors unless their baby boomer parents pulled the black discs from a dusty bin somewhere and spun them on a turntable.
For United Record, phonograph records certainly haven't faded into extinction. It presses thousands of them each day and has seen business grow in the face of the digital recording age.
Cris Ashworth, United Record's owner, knows, however, that vinyl probably won't dominate the way it did before cassettes and compact discs took hold, or usurp the growing use of digital downloads from the Internet.
''But there's a market there,'' he said.
Since 1999, when he bought the operation on Chestnut Street near Greer Stadium, Ashworth has increased United Record's revenues from $1.4 million to $4 million by expanding the business to include the pressing of 12-inch, 33.3-rpm records. The number of employees has increased from 10 to 40.
Vinyl sales plummeted in the 1980s. After bottoming out, demand has been steady for LPs — slang for 12-inch, ''long playing'' albums — over the past decade. Last year, 2.3 million LPs were shipped to U.S. markets, an increase of 3.7% over the 2.2 million shipped in 2000, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. That's a drop in the bucket compared with the 882 million CDs shipped.
Distribution of vinyl 45-rpm singles has dipped dramatically over the past decade, from 19.8 million shipped in 1992 to 5.5 million last year, RIAA figures show. The 2001 sales showed promise with a 19% increase over the previous year. Singles and LPs were the only categories with sales increases for 2001.
Ashworth is banking on demand hanging on and becoming a strong niche in the business. He also sees it as a little historic preservation.
''This business is as important to Nashville history as the RCA studio on Music Row,'' Ashworth said, referring to RCA Studio B, where artists from Elvis Presley to Roy Orbison to Dolly Parton recorded. ''I'm determined to keep it alive from that perspective.''
United Record has pressed promotional or dance-club records for Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, N'Sync as well as numerous hip-hop and reggae artists.
The medium is popular in techno, a genre of futuristic sounds played in dance clubs as part of a show where deejays spin records on multiple turntables to mix music on the spot.
Country music has scaled back its use of vinyl.
''It's definitely becoming a smaller part of what we do,'' said Cary Ryan, director of production for RCA Label Group in Nashville. ''We don't really manufacture them for retail sale.''
Ryan said most of the vinyl from RCA goes to jukebox vendors, a lot of which still use 45s — the 7-inch discs with the large hole in the middle. Instead of vinyl records numbering in the tens of thousands, just a few thousand will be manufactured, Ryan said.
'A warmth' to analog sound
Little about record pressing involves high technology. The basic pressing process has been around for about 100 years.
Music captured on tape or recorded onto a computer is cut into a lacquer disc, with the grooves containing the sound information. The disc is sprayed with silver and dipped into a solution that plates it with nickel. The master plate goes to the pressing machines — and ''press'' is the operative word. Chips of vinyl are melted into a gooey ball, and a label is pushed into place. Then the puck-shaped mass is shifted to the nickel-plated master, where press exerts 150 tons of force to push the vinyl into every crevice.
A new machine would be tough to come by. United Record's pressing machines were made by a Nashville company that no longer exists. The press itself has to be custom-made, and the rest of the equipment can be bought off the shelf.
''The youngest one I've got in here is probably 20 years old,'' Ashworth said.
Companies have tried to use high technology to replicate low-tech vinyl's top-quality sound.
Many recording professionals say digital sound, which is chopped up into the ones and zeros of computer data, pales in comparison to the continuous analog sound wave as captured on vinyl.
''Analog stuff just has a warmth to it that digital doesn't have,'' said Benny Quinn, a 26-year veteran in the business and chief mastering engineer at Masterphonics, a Music Row recording studio.
Artists and recording engineers try to achieve the sound that vinyl produces, such as by running music that has been recorded digitally through an analog tape recorder.
Quinn said the average person could tell the difference between a digital recording and a vinyl one if played next to each other. Analog is softer to the ear than digital, he said.
''A lot of people are mixing to analog,'' Quinn said.
Sony Entertainment is pushing technology that attempts to make digital sound more like analog.
'Elvis has been good to us'
United Record's history dates to the late 1940s, when RCA Victor introduced the 45 rpm record in response to Columbia Records' LP. Though in the back yard of country music, the company had Detroit's Motown Records as one of its largest customers.
''This used to be an all dedicated Motown manufacturing,'' Ashworth said.
It once had many operations around the country. The company was one of several pressing operations in Nashville.
''It was extremely close-knit'' community, said Quinn, who started his career at Nashville Record Productions, a mastering operation down the street from United Record. He said the companies had common ownership.
Over the years, however, United Record's owners prior to Ashworth consolidated as vinyl lost favor, leaving just the Nashville operation. Its four owners were in their 70s, and not all were in good health. They sold to Ashworth, a former corporate executive who once served as Nashville Gas Co.'s chief financial officer.
At roughly the same time, nearby Dixie Record Pressing's owner James Gann was considering winding down. It pressed LPs, while United did only 45s. Ashworth merged the two.
Ozell Simpkins, a former owner of United, still works with United Record and serves as chairman emeritus. Gann runs the shipping operations.
United Record is one of just a handful of manufacturers in the country that press vinyl records.
''So many fewer places do that stuff that the remaining ones are busy,'' Quinn said.
The 25th anniversary of Presley's death in August gave United Record a bump in a steady business for collectibles of the King's music.
''Elvis has been good to us,'' Ashworth said, noting that the company uses plates from 1979 to make the records. ''I can't complain.''
''Our objective is to keep rockin' and rollin'.''
