EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KEVIN CALABRO / ELVIS PRESLEY CD ROOTS REVOLUTION : THE LOUSINA HAYRIDE RECORDINGS.
CONDUCTED BY KEVAN BUDD FOR EP.GOLD.

KB. first id like to say thank you for agreeing to do thIs exclusive interview for Ep.Gold. and id like to first ask if you could tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved with the Elvis roots project and what was the main inspiration to do such a project?
Tomato Records founder Kevin Eggers originally put out the Elvis Presley Louisiana Hayride Recordings on vinyl in the ‘80s. So in light of the 25th Anniversary commemorations, we decided to release the music on CD, but the goal was to sonically overhaul the recordings because they suffered from such poor sound quality on previous releases.
KB. you have used musicians on this set with a very credible musical background....how did you go about selecting the musicians and what was their reaction when you told them what you wished to do.
The record label is based out of New York City, so we’re constantly in contact with some of the finest musicians in the world. We sought out players who dearly loved Presley’s music and who would help rebuild the missing tracks as faithfully as possible to the original version. We made a few phone calls and before we knew it the line-up was in place. All of the musicians were intrigued by the idea. How could they not be. To have the opportunity to work with Elvis Presley, that’s a once in a lifetime kind of gig.
KB. did the musicians find the work hard or just fun in trying to recreate the sound of the 1950s...could you tell us any stories from the studio sessions?
The sessions were lots of fun. There was a great deal of hard work involved as well, because the master recordings were inaudible in some places. So great pains were taken to reconstruct the missing pieces. At one point, the musicians gathered around the TV to watch old videos of Elvis and his band, studying the musicians carefully to hear and see the parts that they were playing. It was quite amazing to witness first hand the love and reverence for not only Elvis, but Scotty Moore and Bill Black. Together they literally caused a revolution by melding together all the various styles of American roots music from blues to gospel, country to swing. Thus the title for the record.
After the sessions on the first day, Jon Paris, the guitarist we used on Roots Revolution, suggested we drop by BB King’s club because Scotty Moore was playing that night with Lee Rocker, the old Stray Cats bassist. So we went down around midnight, and it was a surreal experience to be sitting there watching Scotty Moore perform all the same songs we had just been working on in the studio…”That’s All Right, Mama,” “Good Rockin’ Tonight,” “Maybelline,” “Baby Let’s Play House.” Here was the real thing right in front of our very eyes. We went backstage after the gig and hung with him for a bit. He loved what we were doing, and gave us his blessing on it. We asked him if he wanted to come to the studio the next day for a jam session, but he had to be in Vermont, and couldn’t fit it in his schedule. But it was a case of serendipity getting to hang with Scotty that
night.
KB. did the studio engineers find the work difficult or just fun when trying to recreate the sound of the 50s...what was the most difficult aspect of the whole recording process and could you tell us what mikes, amps etc were used...was it all vintage 50s or modern or a mix of both?
We used vintage equipment for the actual recording – authentic acoustic instruments, gut strings on the bass, period ribbon microphones. The only equipment that wasn’t of the period was Pro Tools, a digital recording system that gave us the ability to massage the original recordings, increasing Elvis and Scotty’s presence in the mix, and seamlessly blending the rebuilt bass and acoustic guitar tracks. The work for the engineers was extremely difficult. There were numerous 16 hour days, trying to get the best possible mix. I think it was fun for them in that it was such a challenge, and anyone good at their job is always up for a
challenge.
KB. many fans will be very critical when it comes to tampering with the music of Scotty and bill and dj, do you have anything you would like to say to the more purist fans.
This is the question I’d most like to answer because I in fact had major hesitations when Tomato’s owner Kevin Eggers suggested restoring the tracks. The Elvis Hayride recordings are like gospel, so I knew there’d be a serious backlash from purists. But once I started thinking about it, the fact is that the original versions are already out in several forms so anybody who wants them can still get them. What we were attempting to do is take the Louisiana Hayride recordings and convert them from something that was only for collectors to something that could actually have mainstream appeal. Because let’s face it, unless you’re really into Elvis or the history of rock ‘n’ roll, you’re not going to truly enjoy the original Hayride performances. The sound fidelity was just horrible. You could barely hear Elvis on some of the tracks, nevermind the rest of his band. I think we went a long way towards making it an extremely listenable experience. You can take Roots Revolution, put it on your stereo and really listen and enjoy. The difference is like day and
night.
KB. could you say what the source for the recordings used were...such as were they taken from various cds or did you have access to any better tapes to start with?
The source recordings were taken from a DAT master that Tomato owned from when Kevin Eggers originally released the performances on his Music Works label in the ‘80s.
KB. well thats all for the questions and thank you again for taking the time to do this interview for us and giving us all a better understanding of what the CD is all about.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW & HOT E NEWS FROM DAVID BENDETH PRODUCER ELV1S 30 # 1 HITS & E 1 5.1 DVD-AUDIO MULTI - CHANNEL.

Glen D Hardin, David Bendeth the producer, Dj Fontana,
James Burton and Ray Bardini (Emgineer)

I just talked today with the Producer from Elvis 30 # 1 Hits : David Bendeth and as you all know, David Bendeth promised us exclusive news for all the Ep.Gold readers.
Hi David ,
Are you still alive and rock 'n rollin?
First of all Andylon, I have been away for a couple of days, just got back from LA., but I am glad my office has sent you all the updates concerning the Elvis 30 # 1 Hits 5.1 DVD - Audio that will be released for December 10th.
Now , I promised you some new exciting news, didn't I.
I would like to START to clarify a few things about this project :
First of all: the Six Special Bonus Tracks are NOT 5.1 DVD - Audio Multi - Channel ... They are all in STEREO.
Second: the rest of the 30 songs and the bonus track ""A little Less Conversation "" , are all in 5.1 Multi- Channel.
Now comes the MOST exciting news, Andylon... you asked me, how it would be possible to listen to a natural sound on all the mono tracks to ... 5.1 Surround Sound E 1 Hits, right?
Ray Bardini and I want to tell the Ep.Gold. readers the WORLD BREAKING NEWS that we have discovered a new technical breakthrough in the Music - field / World
with a technique that has NEVER been used before with ANY Artist, Worldwide ..... up until now!!!
Elvis will be the FIRST Artist on the 5.1 DVD Audio Multi-Channel where this NEW technique on the Mono tracks will be used for the Elvis 30 # 1 Hits Album.
With the Mono-tracks on Elvis 30 # 1 Hits, it does NOT sound electronic, it has a pure, acoustic, new surround sound.
You can really hear the Monaural songs converted to 5.1 DVD Audio by Elvis through the separate speakers by each song, it's incredible to listen to.
Andylon, if you love Elvis and you love Surround Sound.... this will blow you away!!!
I asked David ; Since you and Ray Bardini discovered this new exciting audio technique - Mono sound into 5.1 DVD Audio Multi-Channel, will this recipe be kept a secret by them?
Yes , Andylon and we do not have a technical name for it ....yet.
I've got an idea, David... BB Tech....lol.
By the way, Andylon, we did an interview and next week the professional Audio Magazine
"Mix Magazine" in the US will issue an article about the Making of E 1. 5.1 DVD Audio.
There's someone knocking at my door..... Oh, I gotte go, Andylon... tell the Elvis fans I fixed the pop on the song ""Hound Dog"" and I fixed the band silence between a song ( I think it was after In The Ghetto ) it was 11 seconds and I brought it back to the normal 4 seconds.
Also, I heard some complaining why we didn't use the original Track "" The Wonder Of You"" , but you'll be amazed if you hear this same song on 5.1, you'll understand why.....
Gotta go, talk to you soon....

NEW MUSICAL GREATEST SINGLE CHART.
Joy Division's melancholic anthem 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' has been named the greatest single of all time in a new poll compiled by the NME to mark the 50th anniversary of the singles chart. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is in second place, followed by Anarchy In The UK by the Sex Pistols. Elvis Presley only makes one appearance, at number 47 with 'In The Ghetto'.
Some music fans may raise an eyebrow at the poll, which was decided by NME writers and gives prominence to a number of acts who are relatively new on the music scene. Unsurprisingly, the list has little in common with one compiled by Radio 2 earlier this week, also to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the singles chart.

TOM JONES KEEPS DREAMING ABOUT ELVIS.

Tom Jones says he keeps dreaming about saving Elvis's life.
In his recurring dream, he finds himself back in the 50s and sees the singer leaving a studio.
He follows him to warn him about the end his life came to.
Addressing Elvis and a few friends he is with, he talks about the end of Elvis's career.
"I tell him how the drugs will ruin his life. I tell him about his early death.
"(I say) I'm from the future, look at my clothes! Then I look down at myself and realise I don't look any different because many of the things I wear today are a revival of 50s fashion."
Jones told Zeit weekly his dream always ends the same way: Elvis and his friends refuse to believe him.
"I talk like crazy, but I never manage to prevent his ruin."
The dream reflects real-life experiences Jones made after becoming friends with Elvis when both were performing in Las Vegas.
"During the last years of his life, it was virtually impossible to help him. He didn't answer the phone, he didn't call back, he isolated himself.
"Sometimes I think, maybe I could have helped him. But even in my dreams, I fail."

ELVIS KING OF STAMPS.
When it comes to collecting stamps Elvis is still king. Some 124 million stamps featuring the rock 'n' roll star have been purchased and never used to mail a letter, the Postal Service reports. That means the 29-cent Elvis stamp issued in 1993 made a tidy $36 million profit for the post office. The post office used surveys to track what it calls stamp retention; that is, stamps that are purchased but never used. Mostly it reflects the purchases of stamp collectors, but on special items like the Elvis or Marilyn Monroe stamps many people who are not normally collectors buy some of the stamps and save them too. Placing second to Elvis were the 1992 wildflowers stamps, with a retention of 76.2 million, according to figures released by the Postal Service. Third at 75.8 million stamps are the rock 'n' roll/rhythm and blues stamps issued in 1993. The 1999 insects and spiders stamps are fourth at 60.9 million followed 53.9 million for Legends of Baseball issued in 2000.

NO 9 AND THEIR INCREDIBLE NEW CD SWEET INSPIRATIONS. ( A VERY SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO ELVIS )

The very popular U.K. rock 'n' roll band Number Nine have just released its
very special tribute to Elvis titled "Sweet Inspirations" (Coolsville
Records). Instead of doing the classics, the band decided to focus on
obscure songs and stuff that Elvis is supposed to have sung. Tracks are:
Lonesome Life For Me, Don`t Forbid Me, Always Late With Your Kisses, Don`t
Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes, Only You, All Alone And Lonely, Oakie
Boogie, I'm With The Crowd (But Oh So Alone), I Almost Lost My Mind, Tiger
Man, Happy Happy Birthday Baby, Viva Las Vegas, Sweet Inspiration, Good Time
Charlie's Got The Blues, Poor Boy, Little Mamma, Give Me More, More, More
Of Your Kisses, I`m So Lonesome I Could Cry.
All tracks are done in a great, very authentic Elvis style. Lead-vocalist
Paul Ansell is one of the best "early Elvis" sound-a-likes, and he uses it
to great effect on this CD. Ansell just completed a very successful two-week
U.K. tour together with Scotty Moore, and he calls it "a wonderful
experience. Scotty is such a cool guy and he's really into the music. During
one of the rehearsals I started singing 'How Do You Think I Feel', and he
played the song note-for-note as on the original, even though he hadn't
played it in 45 years. Amazing". For more info about the CD please contact

STAY TUNED 50 YEARS OF HIGHLGHTS OF TV.
New DVD package includes Hip-Swivelling Elvis from the ankle up!
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A television history, to be true to the medium, should be lively and entertaining -- not to mention moving, ridiculous, shocking and, of course, comprehensive.
The TV kaleidoscope is smartly captured in "Stay Tuned: Television's Unforgettable Moments," which lives up to its title and to the daunting task it sets for itself.
Scrutinizing five decades of entertainment, news and sports programming, author Joe Garner has picked out those indelible instances that make up our electronically filtered national memory.
"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," President Reagan booms in Berlin. Prince Charles and Diana exchange wedding vows. Ricky and Lucy bicker. The U.S. Olympic hockey team performs a miracle.
The package (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $49.95) includes a picture-filled book, compact discs and a DVD that allows readers to be viewers as well, seeing for themselves the milestones of modern life.
The DVD, with more than 150 minutes of TV clips, and two CDs cover the 35 landmark broadcasts with Dick Van Dyke, Walter Cronkite and Bob Costas as guides.
Garner includes his own interviews with actors, newsmakers and others who were part of the events. The book offers additional context, with background on programs, news stories and television decision-making.
For instance, just how did little "Heidi" trump the final, decisive minute of the Nov. 17, 1968, Oakland Raiders-New York Jets pro football game on NBC?
Prime time sports was an unproven commodity then, two years before "Monday Night Football," and a game had never gone beyond 7 p.m. That left NBC unprepared when the broadcast ran long.
A last-minute executive decision to choose the game over the children's movie came too late: There was little flexibility in the pre-satellite era of TV telephone transmission.
Angry sports fans blew out 26 switchboard fuses at NBC and even reported the network's crime to New York City police. The next day, the final minute -- Oakland came from behind to beat the Jets 43-32 -- was replayed on the NBC evening news and the growing importance of TV sports was driven home.
"Stay Tuned" is stuffed with such trivia. Elvis Presley's first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1956 included a full shot of the pelvis-swiveling singer. It wasn't until his third visit that cameras shot him from the waist up.
And Presley was introduced not by Sullivan, who was ailing, but by Charles Laughton acting as stand-in host. The distinguished actor and the pop star exchange strained remarks before Presley rocks out.
Garner has experience in sifting through electronic history for its gems. His other compilations include "And the Crowd Goes Wild" and "We Interrupt This Broadcast."
2002/11/08 Joe Garner / Ep.Gold.Com.
ELVIS BOWIE AND THE BOSS.
The latest news in the Elvis world is that material by both David (The Thin White Duke) Bowie and Bruce (the Boss) Springsteen had been offered to Elvis in the 1970s!
During August a television special featured David Bowie. In the special Bowie mentioned that in 1975 Colonel Parker had asked RCA to see if another of its stable, Bowie, would write some new material for Elvis. The Colonel apparently wanted Elvis to go in a new musical direction and songs written by The Thin White Duke would certainly have helped this to happen.
Bowie claimed that he suggested Elvis should do the song "Golden Years" so a demo was sent to Elvis to listen to. Bowie then suggested that Elvis was considering recording the song from what he had heard. However, Bowie also claimed Elvis had sent him a few telegrams to wish him the best in some of the tours that Bowie was doing at the time, but no further mention of the song was ever made and obviously nothing did come of it, to Bowie’s disappointment. Arguably a number of Bowie’s other numbers would have well-suited Elvis’s style and interpretive ability: Starman is one comes immediately to EIN’s mind.
If the Bowie revelation isn’t enough, on the news group, elvis.alt.king, there has been mention of a Springsteen song written for Elvis. The song "Fire" was allegedly to be recorded by Elvis in early 1977 but for some reason it didn’t happen.
The credentials of both claims are hard to believe but arguably had Elvis recorded songs by Bowie and Springsteen it may have given him a new lease of motivation and, at least for a while, postponed the time of his unfortunate death.

Circle G Ranch Resort LLC spokeswoman Vicki Burrow said the Web site is being revamped to make it more user friendly.
Burrow did not say when the site will be back in operation.
The site, www.circlegresort.com, advertised memberships in the development of the Circle G Ranch Resort, which is to be built on the site where Elvis and Priscilla Presley spent their honeymoon in 1967.
The $600 million development is expected to cover 882 acres in Horn Lake.
However, developers still haven't closed on much of the land.
Gerald McLemore, a spokesman for the McLemore family that owns the original 155-acre Circle G Ranch property, said the land hasn't been sold.
"They (the developers) are continuing on our option arrangement," he said.
The developers have also failed to complete the purchase of a 317-acre tract owned by the Hugh Dancy Co., immediately east of the Circle G Ranch property.

E1 DVD - AUDIO RELEASE.
Good news for Elvis fans who are DVD audio enthusiasts. On December 10, ELV1S 30 #1 HITS will be issued on DVD audio. The disc will come in a regular CD size case with alterations to the cover art to distinguish it clearly from the regular CD release. DVD audio discs provide an even greater sound quality experience. They work in all DVD players - both in audio DVD players and video DVD players. (They do not work in regular CD players.) We applaud RCA/BMG for taking this extra step of reaching the new and growing DVD audio market in promoting the worldwide smash ELV1S 30 #1 HITS.
The regular E1 CD presents the songs in chronological order. The DVD audio disc will present them in reverse chronological order. The songs on E1 that take the greatest advantage of DVD audio are those that were originally recorded in multi-track - the later recordings. It's good to put those first on the DVD for maximum initial impact for the listener. The DVD audio disc will have all of the content of the regular E1 CD plus several very special bonus tracks.
You'll hear "A:B" comparison samples of three songs: A - a sample of the original mix of the song, B- a sample of the song with its newly remastered sound as commissioned for the ELV1S 30 #1 HITS CD release.
You'll also hear out-takes of three songs: Elvis' own self-harmony track with his "Sing the song, man, sing the song!" shout of encouragement to himself on Suspicious Minds; studio banter, laughter and a false start on Crying in the Chapel; and the exquisite, spine-tingling isolated Elvis vocal track from In the Ghetto, which emerged as the remastering engineers' favorite example of Elvis' perfect pitch and overall magnificence as an artist.
More details will follow very soon from the E 1 Hits producer David Bendeth...

ELVISFEST LOSES THE ELVIS.
By Neal Rubin / The Detroit News
Elvis Presley Enterprises has crashed its mighty cash-stuffed fist upon the table, and now the Michigan Elvisfest has to either change its name or hold an Elvis festival without Elvises.
The third annual nonprofit Elvisfest drew more than 7,000 people to Frog Island Park in Ypsilanti last summer. The Depot Town Association charged $5 per ticket and rendered unto Elvis 10 percent of the net in exchange for the use of his name.
Next year's celebration of the fat dead singer is scheduled for July 11-12, and plans were proceeding nicely until director Tracy Briggs received a letter Thursday from one Iris Houston, a licensing account coordinator for Elvis Presley Enterprises.
EPE, based in Memphis, is entrusted with safeguarding Presley's image and squeezing as much money as possible from his memory. Apparently, it has decided that Elvis impersonators -- or tribute artists, as they prefer to be called -- sully the memory of the beloved drug-addled glutton who liked to fire pistols at his television and ultimately died on the toilet.
"We have decided to focus our efforts on the real performance material and the actual persona of Elvis Presley," the letter says. "... Hopefully, you can understand our decision to no longer license any festivals that include tribute shows or talent contests."
Actually, Briggs thinks it's short-sighted. "To me," she says, "when you go to an Elvis festival, the first thing you want to see is a sequined jumpsuit." And won't impressionable kids be more inclined to grow up and buy Elvis CDs if they're exposed to his music by impressionists?
Briggs, a stay-at-home mom from Ann Arbor, directs the Michigan (This Space Available) Fest as a volunteer. The rest of the staff makes the same $0 per year she does. "We can't attack Elvis Presley Enterprises with our legal team," she points out, "because we don't have one."
Besides, she probably wouldn't have a leg to shimmy on. So she's being careful to keep things as friendly as possible with EPE while she prepares to beg for an extension.
"We'd like to use the name for another year," she says, "but it doesn't look promising."
The 2002 festival featured a dozen or so performing Elvises and at least 80 more strolling the grounds. Other replica acts included the Blues Brothers, the Beatles, Roy Orbison and Ray Charles.
The show will go on in 2003, Briggs promises, even if it has to do without Elvis' name and likeness. The Elvisfest hasn't begun considering a new identity, but if the goal is a portly, deceased entertainer, there's always Burl Ives.
---
THE PROTECTORS of all things Elvis declined to explain why they don't like tribute artists.
"I'm not answering any questions right now," snapped Houston, the licensing agent. "You need to put all questions in writing."
The written questions weren't answered, either, but at least EPE was consistent.
Briggs says that from what she's been told, the real Elvis always got a kick out of the fake ones. "He would take pictures with them. He'd ask for their autographs."
The impersonators did not charge him for the signatures.
---
IF I'VE seemed unduly harsh toward the King, by the way, it's only out of irritation with the keepers of his flame. The truth is, I like Elvis.
I know all the words to "Jailhouse Rock," and a key evening in the courtship of my eventual spouse involved me singing a karaoke rendition of "Teddy Bear." I would explain further, but she's spent nine years trying to wipe that picture from her mental Etch-a-Sketch.
Anyway, as penance for the weight jokes, I will go home tonight and listen to three of my favorite Elvis tunes, "Love Me Tenderloin," "His Latest Flambe" and "Return to Zehnder's."

ELVIS THE MAN IN WHITE VOLUME 2 NOW RELEASED.......
BUT AFTER OUR TOPIC FROM NOVEMBER 3rd THE MAN IN WHITE VOL. 2 QUESTION???
WRITTEN BY OUR CORRESPONDENT KEITH FLYNN........

HERE IS THE ANSWER FROM THE ELVIS CD COLLECTORS WEBSITE, THE SPECIALISTS ON IMPORT CD'S???.
Out now is "The Man In White Vol. 2" from the Lone Star label and that is unfortunately a painful mistake. They realized too late that this show has been released before on the CD "Still rockin the nation". No further comments are needed. They also announced their 6th release, and that will be Elvis - The man in white Vol. 3 that will contain the Las Vegas, August 14th, 1970 midnight show featuring the songs "You don't know me", "The Johnny Cash medley" "Whole lotta shakin' goin' on" and others.
Tracklisting The Man in white Vol. 2:
C.C. Rider - I got a woman / Amen - Love me - Fairytale - You gave me a mountain - All shook up - Teddy bear / Don’t be cruel - And I love you so - Jailhouse rock - Fever - America (the beautiful) - Reprise - One night - Polk salad Annie - Introductions - Early morning rain - What’d I say - Johnny B Goode - Tutt solo - Scheff solo - Brown solo - Briggs solo - Love letters - Hail hail rock and roll - Hurt - Reprise - Hound dog - Funny how time slips away - That’s allright - Can’t help falling in love

Hi Ep.Gold.
As you are probably aware by now I was correct with my assumption about The Man In White Vol 2, it is now released (according to FECC) and it is exactly the same show as released on Still Rocking The Nation. I really feel sorry for Lone Star to have gone this far down the line and then realise their mistake when it was too late to do anything about it, but surely they must have realised sooner. I only picked up on the fact yesterday , really just by luck, and a little bit of investigation. How could a record company (?) be so silly as to let this fact slip them by.
Keith Flynn.

Hello,
The Le Roi and Lone Star Label are no two seperate companies - producers.... it's the same producer - companiy who released this show now twice.
No misstakes, I think it's one time for the money , the second time the same show, c'mon everybody spend your $ twice Go.Go.Go.

ELVIS WAS WELSH.
A new book claims that Elvis Presley's roots lay not in the American Deep South but in the Welsh valleys.
The revelation has been published in Terry Beverton's A – Z of Wales, and is backed-up by some very persuasive factual investigations.
Breverton, a historian based at the University of Wales in Cardiff, claims The King was named after the St Elvis chapel on a Welsh mountainside.
He also asserts that Elvis's surname was derived from the Presili Hills.
Elvis's parents had the Welsh names of Gladys and Veron, while his grandmother Doll Mansell is linked to the Mansel family from Oxwich on the Gower Peninsula.
Finally, The King's dead twin brother Jesse Garon Presley had a Welsh second name.
Beverton concludes: 'Although most Elvisologists' believe that Elvis came from Scottish and Cherokee blood, further research would probably solidify the Welsh connection (?) at the expense of the Scottish.'

Regarding the fans comments I would like to add the following to the E1 dvd news from David Bendeth
This is great news for Elvis fans, who would have thought Elvis would be leading the way in the music business twenty five years after he died. It will be great to get some extra tracks too, maybe they could include the acapella In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds which we have heard parts of in the making of E1 video.
