Son Of
Elvis' Deemed Unfit.
He is charged with threatening
judges over Presley estate.
PROVO — A man claiming to be Elvis Presley's son
has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial on charges stemming from
alleged threats made against Utah judges.
Ernest John Young Ernest John Young, who also is known as Jason Presley,
was declared incompetent Thursday after two medical examiners testified
that the man thinks he is the heir to the Presley fortune, among other
views and beliefs.
Young allegedly threatened the judges for refusing to file murder
charges against the people Young says conspired to kill "The King."
Young, 49, has been trying fruitlessly to convince officials in
government courts, even going so far as to sent legal documents to the
Supreme Court, to start looking into his conspiracy allegations, said
Dave Stewart, the public defender who was recently appointed to Young's
4th District Court case.
The
case was transferred to Provo from the 3rd District because of a
conflict with the judges.
Young called two different 3rd District judges multiple times in May and
allegedly threatened them with physical harm if they did not act on
motions he was submitting.
Those motions ask that the "government (file) murder charges against
unnamed persons arising out of a death that allegedly took place in
Graceland, Tennessee," according to court documents.
Young has also asked that any court proceedings against him be stayed
until the legal authorities prosecute a handful of people for murder,
rape and extortion as he alleges in a series of oddly worded motions.
Young has also previously filed requests for protective motions against
Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley.
Dr. Richard Wootton testified that during his interview and examination
of Young it was obvious the man suffered from "a delusional disorder of
a grandiose type."
"I think he believed he had a clear understanding," Wootton said. "(But
he) would not be able to carry on a lucid, linear conversation."
The man has a good vocabulary, can read and is intelligent, Wootton
said, but the problem is his limited rational understanding and his
emphasis is on his delusional beliefs.
Wootton said Young told him about a grave site in Tennessee where two
bodies were allegedly buried under a headstone containing his name. The
man also talked about money owed to him from the Presley estate, some
$700 million dollars.
"His written motions are difficult to read as they contain grammatical
omissions, syntax errors and lack cohesive facts that might render his
allegations understandable," wrote Kent Morgan, a deputy Salt Lake
County district attorney who is prosecuting the case, in his request for
a mental competency review.
With
4th District Court Judge Gary Stott's ruling, the case involving two
third-degree felonies of retaliating against a judge will be on hold for
90 days while Young is sent to the state hospital for an attempt to
restore him to competency.
If he is found competent, the case can proceed. If he is still
incompetent, the judge may order more time in the state hospital.

The Elvis Suite.

The Lauderdale Courts housing
project where teen Elvis Presley lived (1949-1953) long ago fell to the forces
of gentrification, undergoing a $36 million renovation into the Uptown Square
complex. Yups of all description are now happily ensconced in their renovated
apartments, awash in WiFi. However, in apartment 328, you can still live as
Elvis did.
The lauderdalecourts (www.lauderdalecourts.com)
lives on in this one apartment, preserved as an Elvis shrine; visitors can ogle
the place during festivities surrounding Elvis's death- and birthdays, or rent
the whole place out for $249 per night otherwise. (The Presleys paid $35 per
month.) You got two bedrooms, one bathroom, kitchen, and living room, all
tricked out in period crap furniture and Elvisabilia. Don't be fooled by the
authentic Frigidaire in the kitchen -- there's also a microwave concealed in a
cabinet, and a hidden flatscreen TV in the living room. Mementos aside, just
consider that the Elvis bedroom was likely the scene of young Mr. Presley's most
enthusiastic demonstrations of teenage self-love; there might even be a few
flicks of Kingly DNA left on the headboard, if you look carefully.

The New Import label Music For
Fans Releases A Concept Album.
(acetates from the June 1970 sessions and rare
live recordings from 1970 to 1977)

A new project for a new label
that will be released soon is Patch it Up..
MUSIC FOR FANS – would like to afford you the
opportunity of listening to a concept album dedicated to the best Elvis studio
session of the 1970’s. Instead of providing another compilation in an already
over saturated market we present something new, something different and
exciting. We started with a large collection of Elvis acetates and decided to
finally do justice to the album ‘Elvis Country.’ With an innovative tracklist we
provide a different sound to that provided by the postproduction pieces of
Felton Jarvis, a sound that Elvis should have been allowed to enjoy. We feel we
have given life to a new Elvis, an Elvis others don’t know. We see Elvis take
shape as musician and producer through 13 studio tracks completely unedited, raw
yet musically complete. In addition we have added 14 rarely heard and mostly
unedited live tracks that cover all the musical activity of Elvis in the 1970’s.
We feel that they give you an idea of the musical evolution of Elvis from August
10th 1970 right up to his last concert in Market Square Arena.
We have supported our ambitious project with an
informative and professional 16-page booklet containing rare and unedited shots.
The project is the culmination of a lengthy period of pre-production involving
research and selection, and the often difficult and delicate phase of restoring,
remastering, and remixing of the chosen material. The final result is something
we hope even Elvis would have enjoyed. The song selection and booklet layout
are, of course, hugely influenced by our own views on the music of Elvis, we
hope your ideas are reflected in some way and that you enjoy our work as this is
all we ask.

Elvis
fans Desert The Proposed Elvis Number Plate.

Elvis, who was bumped to the No. 2 spot last week among biggest-earning dead
celebrities, has been unable to come up with enough orders to justify his own
Tennessee specialty license plate. Elvis Presley Enterprises and the Regional
Medical Center at Memphis (The Med) kicked off the license plate campaign last
October as a fund-raising effort for The Med, home of the Elvis Presley Memorial
Trauma Center.
"We're struggling here," said Sandy Snell, vice president of public relations
for The Med. She said this week about 500 people have placed orders, but the
state requires a minimum of 1,000 orders to justify producing a specialty plate.
"We thought it would be so easy, but we've gotten to this 500 mark and we're
kind of stuck," Snell said. She advertised the campaign locally and in Middle
Tennessee, then said she ran into budget constraints at The Med and hasn't been
able to advertise in East Tennessee. The first deadline passed during the
summer, but The Med was granted a one-year extension -- until July 1, 2007 -- to
try to come up with another 500 buyers. Elvis Presley Enterprises spokesman
Kevin Kern said EPE has promoted the plate in its newsletter and on its Web
site, elvis.com. It renewed the Web site push with a reminder on the site's
opening page Thursday.
"We continue to support The Med in their effort to make the Elvis license plate
a reality," Kern said. The Elvis Web site directs Tennesseans interested in
buying an Elvis tag to the Web address mscruggs@the-med.org . Or they can call
The Med at (877) 545-3757. There is serious competition in the specialty plate
field with about 150 plates offered through the Tennessee Department of Revenue.
Five Memphis area plates are among them -- for LeMoyne-Owen College, Rhodes
College, the University of Memphis, LeBonheur Children's Medical Center and St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital. Elvis and The Med are not the first to run
into the 1,000-minimum stumbling block. When the Memphis Grizzlies and the
National Civil Rights Museum attempted to create specialty plates, they were
unable to get 1,000 orders. However, the Tennessee Titans football team is one
of the top five sellers among specialty plates in the state.
Revenue department communications director Emily Richard said the top five and
the annual revenue produced by the plates are: Friends of the Smokies
($512,000); agricultural plate ($279,000); environmental plate with the iris,
the state flower ($277,000); Watchable Wildlife ($276,000); and the Titans
($196,000). Specialty plates cost about $35 more than a regular license plate,
and Snell said The Med would receive about $20 of the revenue for each plate
sold. She said she has had numerous calls from people outside the state who are
interested in an Elvis plate, but the orders must come from licensed Tennessee
drivers to qualify. Snell said she has set up recruitment booths at Memphis
Grizzlies basketball games, at NASCAR races and auto shows. "It's not like we
haven't tried, but there's only so much you can do."
For Elvis, the effort that has fallen short was the second bad news in a week.
Elvis, the perennial No. 1 earner among dead celebrities, was knocked to No. 2,
behind grunge rocker Kurt Cobain, in the latest listing by Forbes magazine.
Snell said she is still hopeful that EPE's Web site solicitation will produce
extra orders, but she said she still wishes for a bigger advertising presence.
"If we could get Elvis to sing across Tennessee, maybe it would be OK," she
said. "We could get him to say, 'Don't be cruel. Buy my tag.'

ZIPPIN
PIPPIN OFF TO N.C

Elvis Presley's favorite amusement park ride, a roller coaster called the
Zippin Pippin, is zippin off to North
Carolina.
A pair of Nashville collectors who bought the coaster at auction in June
said Friday that they sold it to the
tourism bureau in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.
Stephen Shutts, president of a traveling collection called the Honky Tonk
Hall of Fame & Rock-N-Roll
Roadshow, said the North Carolina town wants the coaster for its Carolina
Crossroads tourism project.
He said the wooden coaster, which was built in 1923, will be part of an
amusement area that includes a 1,500-
seat music theater in a 1,000-acre park.
"They were most intrigued with the Elvis Presley connection and have plans
for a quick dismantling and
relocation of this wonderful piece of American history," Shutts said.
Shutts declined to say how much Roanoke Rapids paid for the coaster. He and
his partner bought the Zippin
Pippin for $2,500 in June.
The ride was a top attraction at Libertyland, a 30-year-old amusement park
in Memphis that Presley often
rented for private parties. The park closed last year after several seasons
of falling attendance and financial
losses.
Shutts said country music superstar Dolly Parton, who operates Dollywood in
Pigeon Forge, Tenn., was
originally interested in the Pippin. But he said Dollywood learned it would
have had to spend millions to
rearrange its layout to accommodate the 3,000-foot roller coaster.
Parton's brother, country-gospel entertainer Randy Parton, plans to operate
the Carolina Crossroads, which
officials hope will be the first of a number of similar operations in the
region. Parton's company is Moonlight
Bandit Productions Inc.
Ground was broken one year ago on the 1,500-seat Randy Parton Theater, which
is expected to be the
cornerstone of the Carolina Crossroads Music and Entertainment District. The
theater is scheduled to open
in April.
Denise Parkinson, founder of a Save Libertyland coalition, said Friday that
Memphis should make a
counteroffer in hopes of saving the Pippin.
"Memphis is losing an opportunity to create our own vintage rock and roll
park."

Elvis Tunes In Musical Still
Fresh.
When Joe
DiPietro started sifting through the Elvis Presley songbook looking for
tunes for a jukebox musical, he thought he would find a fair amount of ...
well, not-so-great stuff.
Instead, he was pleasantly surprised.
"With many artists of any generation, there's a lot of crap," he said. "I
thought I would find a lot of that stuff with him, but he really knew what
he was doing. When you listen to that music (from his era) now, much of it
sounds archival and dated. His stuff sounds fresh; 'Jailhouse Rock' could be
recorded today."
DiPietro wrote the book for "All Shook Up," the Elvis musical that pops into
the Majestic Theatre next week for a six-day stand.
The show strings together more than 20 Elvis tunes and tells the story of a
small-town gal whose world is turned upside down by the arrival of a
handsome rebel.
"It's all the Shakespeare comedies sort of combined with every Elvis movie
you ever saw," DiPietro said.
He got involved with the show through sheer happenstance.

FANS REMEMBER
DAYTON 76.

Dayton Daily News article after Elvis
Presley performed at UD Arena in October 1976.
The lights went down, and
the theme song from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey started to play — and the
13,750 fans at the University of Dayton Arena came to their feet.
Shantay Parrish of New Carlisle had camped out at the arena with her mom in the
cold for two days to get her
tickets. The 15-year-old had waited weeks for this night.
It was time to see Elvis.
Thirty years ago today, Elvis Presley performed at the University of Dayton
Arena. It was his fourth show at
the arena, and unknown to the fans, it would be his last show there.
For fans like Shantay, it has been a long time since Oct. 26, 1976, but the
memories of that night remain
etched in their minds. "Every hair on my body stands up when I think about it,"
she said.

A ticket
stub from Elvis Presley's Oct. 26, 1976 concert at the University of Dayton
Arena. For Presley, who had made numerous appearances in the Miami Valley, it
would be his final visit.
The royal treatment in
Dayton
On Oct. 25, 1976, Elvis' plane, the Lisa Marie, left Fort Wayne, Ind., and
arrived at Dayton International
Airport at 1:45 a.m. Elvis and his entourage went to Stouffer's Hotel, now the
Crowne Plaza Hotel, in
downtown Dayton. He had the ninth floor for himself. Of course, others tried to
join him.
"My sister and I went to the Stouffer's Hotel, hoping to see him," said Elvira
Allen of Hamilton. "We were
allowed in the lobby; we just couldn't get off of the elevator on the floor
Elvis was staying on."
A group of Elvira's friends had waited 36 hours around UD Arena for tickets that
went on sale Oct. 1. at 7 a.
m. Blanket-covered fans watched bootleg 8mm Elvis concerts on white sheets and
on the backs of books
while they waited. Arena employees ran extension cords outside, so fans could
play music. Security guards
estimated the crowd at 5,000. Nearly half of the arena was sold out by 10 a.m.
"The day of the concert, we decided to go to the beauty parlor. While we were
there, there was another lady
getting one of those bouffant hairdos. ... It was obvious she was going to the
show," Elvira said.
The women were all talking about Elvis. When the woman learned where Elvira's
seats were, she tried to do
the unthinkable — separate Elvira from her precious sixth-row seats.
"The woman was taking her teenage daughter and wanted to get as close to Elvis
as she could get. The
woman kept raising her price until she got to $100. The original ticket was $12.
I told her, 'Lady, you don't
have enough money to buy my ticket.' "
Security fit for
a king
Dayton Police Sgt. Larry Powell was responsible for watching the elevator on the
ninth floor of Stouffer's
Hotel and making sure fans — including Elvira — never made it to Elvis.
"I never went into Elvis' room, but I saw him several times. He'd come out and
ask us what time it was. That's
where I blew it. I should have given him my watch, and maybe he'd have bought me
a car or something,"
Powell said. "He was a very nice person. We were told we could order room
service and have anything we
wanted."
Of course, Elvis always got what he wanted, even if the hotel couldn't meet his
needs. "Elvis loved pizza rolls,
and nobody could find them in the hotel," Powell said. "So he sent his people
out looking for them. We had to
give them directions to the store."
According to a Dayton Daily News article from Oct. 24, 1976, Dayton Sgt. Charles
Dungan headed up the 35-
officer detail protecting Elvis during his two days in Dayton.
"Colonel (Tom) Parker calls me up when they first schedule the show and set up a
security force. We
supplement Elvis' own security people, set up building and room security, and
get him to and from the show,"
Dungan said.
The concert started at 8:30 p.m. The Sweet Inspirations and J.D. Sumner and the
Stamps Quartet were
getting the crowd warmed up. Elvis left Stouffer's a little after 9 for the
short drive to UD Arena. The car pulled
into the arena and Elvis entered the building.
Up close and
personal.

Elvis
Presley's Oct. 26, 1976 concert at the University of Dayton Arena. For Presley,
who had made numerous appearances in the Miami Valley, it would be his final
visit.
Bob Heis of Miamisburg had seen Elvis many times before. He attended 49 Elvis
concerts — his first in 1971.
Bob was not just a local fan catching the Dayton concert — he was an Elvis
photographer. Bob used a single-
lens reflex camera and often got front-row seats to get the best shots. If he
didn't get toward the front, he
found a way to move up.
"I'd see a woman with a small child and I'd offer to make her copies of my
photos if I could have the kid's
seat," Bob said.
Bob was friends with other photographers and avid fans. Bartering was a
commonplace among them to
capture Elvis from as close as possible during each show. "I spent two days at
UD and got 10 front-row
seats," Bob said. After getting tickets, Heis would find other photographers and
fans looking for seats, and
they would trade. "I'll give you two seats in Dayton for two seats in Chicago."
Thirty years later, Bob's Ohio license plate remains ELVIS, and he has no plans
on changing it anytime soon.
'The most
perfect voice ever'
"I got back from the military, and a girl I was dating at the time got me three
seats," said Bill Rowe of Dayton.
"We got down there at about 5:30 p.m. and we couldn't get across the Stewart
Street Bridge. It was
pandemonium down there."
By 1976, Bill had seen Elvis more than 25 times — mostly in Las Vegas. For him,
the anticipation was the
best part.
"The lights go down and then you hear the first strands of 2001, and it's just
the best entrance anybody had,"
Rowe said. "I've always said that Elvis could have sat down and read the phone
book. He had the most
perfect voice ever."
From his Elvis carpet to his collection of music and rare memorabilia, Bill can
see Elvis up close every day.
For most of the last three decades, he has been first in line at Graceland every
August for the candlelight
vigil during which thousands file past Elvis' gravesite in Memphis. "I miss him
so much."
Eye to eye with Elvis
Elvis took to the UD stage around 9:40 p.m. It was vintage Vegas-era Elvis. That
night he wore a jumpsuit
emblazed with an orange flame on the front and back.
See See Rider and I Got a Woman were his first two songs. Shantay Parrish would
have loved to have been
Elvis' woman. The 15-year-old had loved Elvis from a young age. Her mother was a
fan and took Shantay to
her first concert in Cleveland when she was 11. "I think I must have been
conceived to Elvis music," Shantay
said.
Shantay wasn't like a lot of the other students at Tecumseh High School in the
late '70s. They were listening
to Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Rolling Stones while she was still rocking to The
King. "I didn't care. Back then
they were nothing to me. Nobody is like Elvis."
For the Dayton show, Shantay made Elvis a wall hanging featuring a man and a
woman. It had the titles of
some of Elvis' love songs on it. During the show, she was determined to get it
to him. "I was scared to death,"
she remembers. "I made my way down to that stage and unrolled it on stage so he
could see it. He held it
down with his boot and looked at me and locked on my eyes — I just wet my pants.
My heart (expletive
deleted) near stopped."
Shantay, whose last name now is Violette, recalls that Elvis' voice was in top
form at the Dayton show. "When
he did How Great Thou Art, he brought the roof down."
Not long before How Great Thou Art, Elvis did a new song titled Hurt, and the
crowd could not get enough of
it.
"Even though you hurt me/
Like nobody else could ever do/
I would never hurt, hurt you."
That was supposed to be the end of the song, but the fans demanded he sing it
again.
Jerry Geisel of Kettering lucked out and was able to trade in his upper-level
seats for floor seats.
His wife, Carol, got a new outfit for the show. "All the girls at the show were
beautiful," Geisel said. Of course,
the girls were not the only people there who were beautiful. "Elvis was
beautiful," Geisel said. "I ain't gay or
nothing, but Elvis was beautiful."
Carol walked up to the stage during Teddy Bear and tried to get a scarf from
Elvis.
"Elvis wiped his sweat on it and gave it to Carol," Geisel said. "Then another
woman swiped it from her. Then
another woman came in and they started fighting over it, and they wouldn't let
go. Someone cut it in half.
Elvis motioned for Carol to go down to the end of the stage and he gave her a
scarf."
Carol died last year. Geisel still has that scarf along with hundreds of other
Elvis items.
Christmas in
October
One thing most of those at the Dayton concert remember was the October surprise.
"It was freezing outside,
and Elvis asked if he could sing a Christmas song," Shantay said. He treated the
surprised crowd to Blue
Christmas — a song he rarely performed. "I just cried," Shantay said.
After Blue Christmas, Elvis performed his early hit That's All Right and ended
the show with his traditional
closer — Can't Help Falling In Love.
After performing for one hour and 20 minutes, Elvis left the building. He stayed
in Dayton that night. On June
26, 1977, he performed his final concert, in Indianapolis. Elvis died on Aug.
16, 1977 in Memphis.
When asked why Elvis fans have remained so dedicated over the decades, Shantay
Violette said, "Elvis
wasn't God, but he
was the next best thing."

Humperdinck On Elvis.
LOS ANGELES - British crooner Engelbert
Humperdinck says he was inspired by Elvis, lucky to have a wife who did
not mind women throwing panties at him, and once fired a manager who
made him second fiddle to rival Tom Jones.
He said Elvis Presley was one of his biggest musical influences. They
met many times when both were performing in Las Vegas and became good
friends.
"Elvis was a true and generous gentleman, who always was warm and
embraced people that he was close to. I was always impressed that Elvis
would look you right in the eye when he talked to you. He was sincere in
everything he asked you.
"I learned about humility, charm and how to work an audience from
watching Elvis in concert. If you're going to steal - and every
performer does it from someone at some time - then steal from the best,
which Elvis was," he said.

In June of 1972 Elvis
Presley performed his first concert in New York, selling out all four shows held
at Madison Square Garden.
Two albums were recorded
out of these concerts, Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden, and An
Afternoon In the Garden.
Elvis played an extensive
set list which embraced everything from "That's All Right" to "Suspicious Minds"
to "Proud Mary"
to "You Don't Have
to Say You Love Me".
GREAT MSG MOMENTS.
Which MSG moment do you
think was the GREATEST? We want to know what you think. Vote on the great
moments below and then watch.

"The 50 Greatest Moments on MSG" - starting October 31st to see how
your list stacks up to ours.
It's a battle of some of the greatest
U.S. and international stars.
It's a battle of some of the greatest U.S. and international stars, with Marilyn
Monroe up against Elvis Presley, boxer Muhammad Ali, former President Bill
Clinton and even Pope John Paul II.
U.S. television viewers are being asked to vote on the greatest moment at one of
the world's most famous arenas, New York's Madison Square Garden, which has
played host to a list of sports stars, musicians, politicians and religious
leaders in its 127-year history.
Everybody who has been anybody has had a magical moment at Madison Square
Garden, according to producers of a new TV series, "The 50 Greatest Moments at
Madison Square Garden," that will be broadcast next week.
"It's based on the 50 most incredible experiences that have occurred in this
building," said Michael Bair, president of sports and entertainment network MSG
Media, which is airing the 10-part series from next week.
Madison Square Garden has been the name of four arenas in New York City, with
the first opening in 1879 and the most recent in 1968 with the capacity to hold
20,000 people.
Throughout its history it has been a top venue for major stars and events.
These include Marilyn Monroe's 1962 birthday serenade to President John F.
Kennedy on his 45th birthday, the 1971 fight in which Joe Frazier beat Muhammad
Ali for the heavyweight title, Elvis Presley's sell-out 1972 shows, and John
Lennon's last live performance in 1974.
Pope John Paul II visited Madison Square Garden in 1979 and in 1982 the Rev. and
Mrs. Sun Myung Moon held a blessing ceremony there for 2,075 couples which was
dubbed a "mass wedding" by media at the time.
Bill Clinton accepted the presidential nomination at Madison Square
Garden in 1992.

For The fFrst Time Ever Two
Reproduction of Pre Fame Elvis Presley Acetates Available.

In mid November a 100 % reproduction of the two acetates, My
Happiness/That’s When Your Heartaches Begin and It Wouldn't Be The Same Without
You/I'll Never Stand In Your Way, that Elvis did in 1953 and 1954 will be
released.
Both acetates will be exactly like the original ones. For the first time
ever these reproductions of both pre fame Elvis Presley acetates be available in
their originally form. Both are made on a 10” vinyl record that will play at 45
rpm.
This is a one of a kind and unique chance to own an exact
copy of two of the most historical records of modern music. There will only be a
limited amount of 300 copies of each record produced.
In August 1953 did a very
young Elvis Presley walk into the local Memphis Recording Service. He paid $
4.00 to recorded two sides and get them home with him on a one of kind two sided
acetate. The songs were the two ballads My Happiness and That’s When Your
Heartaches Begin.
Elvis probably hoped that Sam Phillips (the owner of Memphis
Recording Service and the founder of the local record label Sun Records) would
pay attention to him and that he might get a chance on being invited for a real
recording session. Sam wasn’t there that day but Marion Keisker who at that time
worked for Sam did the recordings and noted that Elvis was a great ballad
singer.
In early
1954 Elvis still haven’t heard from Sam so he decided to go back and pay another
$ 4.00 to record two more sides. This time did he record two more ballads titled
It Wouldn’t Be The Same Without You and I’ll Never Stand In Your Way.
Nearly the
same happened again. In other words Marion was impressed and saved a copy for
Sam, but Sam wasn’t. It would take nearly another half year before Sam decided
to call the young kid Elvis and invite him in for a try-out and a possible
recording session. The rest is history.
For the
first time ever will a reproduction of both pre fame Elvis Presley acetates be
available in their originally form. Both are made on a 10” vinyl record that
will play at 45 rpm. The labels are exactly like the original primitive ones.
The first one My Happiness/That’s When Your Heartaches was originally a white
label with typewriting on it. The fun thing is that a leftover of the Sun label
from Prisonaires’ Softly And Tenderly (Sun 189) single was flipped over so that
the back was used. On the original acetate can you see that thru the label.
Exactly the same is the case with the new reproduction. (maybe not easy to see
in the picture, but it is easy to see when you hold the record). The second one
It Wouldn’t Be The Same Without You/I’ll Never Stand In Your Way was originally
made with a more professional label. This time did Marion used a pre-printed
Memphis Recording Service label. Again she used a typewriter to put the song
titles and Elvis’ name on it.

Rock 'n' roll legend Elvis
Presley ceded his crown to Nirvana.
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rock 'n' roll legend
Elvis Presley ceded his crown to Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain on
Forbes.com's list as the top-earning dead celebrity.
The list, published on Tuesday, said grunge rocker Cobain earned $50
million between October 2005 and October 2006. Presley wound up in the
No. 2 slot with $42 million, down from last year's $45 million.
Forbes.com bases its dollar amounts on licensing deals for using the
deceased celebrities' work or image in advertising or elsewhere.
This was Cobain's first time on the list in its six years of
publication. Presley has ruled the roost since its inception, said
Forbes.com staff writer Lacey Rose.
Cobain's coup was due to his widow, actress and singer Courtney Love,
who sold a 25-percent stake in the Seattle grunge group's song catalog
to New York music publishing company PrimeWave.
Ranked after Presley is "Peanuts" cartoon strip creator Charles Schulz
at $35 million.
Rounding out the top five were Beatle John Lennon at $24 million and
groundbreaking physicist Albert Einstein at $20 million, whose estate
profited from such licensing deals as the popular "Baby Einstein"
educational videos.
Other celebrities on the list include Theodore Geisel, better known as
children's book author Dr. Seuss; rhythm & blues pioneer Ray Charles and reggae superstar Bob Marley.
The only woman to rank in the top 13 was Marilyn Monroe. The
actress, who died of an overdose in 1962, pulled in $8 million, good for
ninth place.
Here is the rundown of the top 10
(the complete list is online at: www.Forbes.com):
1. Kurt Cobain, US$50 million
2. Elvis Presley, $42 million
3. Charles Schulz, $35 million
4. John Lennon, $24 million
5. Albert Einstein, $20 million
6. Andy Warhol, $19 million
7. Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel), $10 million
8. Ray Charles, $10 million
9. Marilyn Monroe, $8 million
10. Johnny Cash, $8 million

VOICE PRESS RELEASE.
It’s been thirty years since Elvis
Presley’s personal group – “VOICE” spent Christmas with him and thirty years
since Elvis’ group “VOICE” sang together. This legendary group traveled with
Elvis, opened his tour shows, and sang songs personally for Elvis. GREAT
NEWS --- Elvis’ group ”VOICE” (Nielsen, Sumner and Baty) recently got
together, at Donnie Sumner’s Recording Studio in Hendersonville, TN and cut
two new CD’s. This is after a thirty year hiatus ….the last album recorded
by VOICE was in 1974, and it is called “Distilled Gospel” (now a collector’s
item).
So, you ELVIS fans and “VOICE” fans alike, look out……the new CD’s are being
pressed as this Press Release is released and will be available shortly.
Hopefully, just in time for your Christmas shopping. “VOICE” wanted to
remember Elvis at Christmas time. Everyone knows that this was his favorite
time of the year. These were times that “VOICE” (Nielsen, Sumner and Baty)
would sit around the piano at Graceland singing Christmas and Gospel songs.
“VOICE” spent many hours singing for Elvis. The new “VOICE” CD’s captures
some of Elvis’ favorite Christmas and Gospel songs.
Now, for the “behind the scene news”….Nielsen, Sumner and Baty sound
terrific. Sherrill is still hitting those crystal clear high “C’s”. Sherrill
received a Living Legend Award in 2006 for 50 years of singing Southern
Gospel Music. Donnie is still amazing us with his great lead voice. Donnie
is celebrating 46 years of singing Southern Gospel Music. Tim is still
thrilling us with his soulful baritone voice. Their blend is amazing. So
after a thirty year absence, the group just seemed to fall right into place
like they never missed a beat. Will there be more to come? We don’t know but
we certainly don’t want to wait another thirty years before something is
released.
Thirty years is a long time to reflect upon and a lot of things change but
“VOICE” still sounds the same. What are these guys doing in the year 2006,
thirty years after working for the King of Rock ‘n Roll? You can visit
Sherrill’s website to keep up with his activities www.sherrillandbrenda.com
and you can visit Donnie’s website to keep up with his activities
www.donniesumner.com You will be
surprised to learn that all three are still in the music business and are
carrying out the work of their King. They haven’t wandered far from their
roots.
Another special on both new CD’s is a song by the legendary J. D. Sumner,
Donnie’s uncle. What a “come-back”. What a” classic way” to break their
thirty year absence

PARISHIONERS STILL
SHOOK UP OVER
ELVIS.
Arkansas Catholic (arkansas-catholic.org)
The story goes that Elvis Presley was kicked out of the Catholic
Club for signing the thigh of a teenage girl
after he performed there in 1955. The sisters of Sacred Heart Academy banned
boarding students from
attending Presley's shows, after the rumors of his shocking "hip gyrations" had
reached their ears.
Stories about the future King of Rock 'n Roll in Helena vary as much as the
opinions on his unique music
style. Though the details of Presley's legendary expulsion have been muddied by
50 years of creative
storytelling, most agree on this basic point: the late Father Gregory Keller,
former St. Mary Church pastor,
told the ambitious musician to leave and never come back.
The Catholic Club, as it was known in the 1950s, was St. Mary's parish hall and
Sacred Heart's school
gymnasium. The former Sacred Heart Academy was run by the Sisters of Charity of
Nazareth until 1962. The
club also served as Helena's community center because it was the largest
building of its kind at the time.
Civic organizations, schools and other local groups frequently rented the club
for banquets, meetings and
dances.
So when the young and not-yet famous Presley went looking for a place to perform
in Helena, only 65 miles
southwest of Memphis, he was directed to the parish hall, in part by St. Mary
parishioner and local celebrity
radio host "Sunshine" Sonny Payne.
In the 1950s, the then-thriving Delta town of Helena had become a magnet for
regional musicians since
KFFA's "King Biscuit Time" had put Blues on the map in 1941.
Payne, 80, who has hosted the show since 1951, still broadcasts five days a week
from the Delta Cultural
Center. On Oct. 4 he joined fellow parishioners, Nick Brocato, 79, Lynne Von
Kanel, 70, and Annetta
Beauchamp, 77, at St. Mary Parish to remember the days The King played in
Helena.
Payne recalled that
Presley first approached his KFFA co-worker Larry Parker about playing a gig in
Helena
in the early 1950s. He is uncertain of the exact date.
Long before his nationally televised appearances in 1956, Presley's early
performances, in many small
Southern towns like Helena, were not officially documented. According to a Jan.
23, 2005, article in the
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, as well as the Web site www.elvisconcerts.com and the
book, "Elvis: Day by
Day," Presley did shows at the Catholic Club at least four times in 1954 and
1955. These dates include Dec.
2, 1954; Jan. 13, 1955; March 8, 1955; and Dec. 14, 1955.
Payne said his first impression of Presley was not a good one. "He had on an old
T-shirt and a cigar in his
mouth. He didn't impress me one bit," he said. "When you're in show business,
you have to look like a show
person, and you can't do it in T-shirts or blue jeans."
Payne said Presley auditioned for Parker, who then told Payne, "'He's not bad.'"
So Payne and Parker
approached Father Keller (the uncle of the current pastor in Carlisle and
England, Father Thomas Keller) for
permission to rent the Catholic Club.
The cost was $15 for three hours, which was a lot of money back then. Payne and
Parker each borrowed
$7.50 to come up with the fee because Presley did not have it and promised to
pay them back after the show,
which he did.
But the second time Payne and Parker booked Presley at the Catholic Club, Jan.
13, 1955, they didn't get
their money back. And it was the last time the pair booked a show in Helena for
the future superstar.
Payne said Presley asked if he could pay them back later, but he never did.
"Before he went into the Army I called and, got, 'Oh man, I'm gonna get it to
you,' but after two or three calls I
said, 'Well, forget it.'"
Payne did eventually get his money, 50 years later. The Helena Chamber of
Commerce contacted the Elvis
Presley estate about the debt and presented Payne with a $15 check at the annual
chamber banquet in
February 2005. "I felt about this high," Payne said holding his hand a foot off
the floor. "I was thoroughly
embarrassed.
Brocato said he worked the concession stand when Presley performed at the
Catholic Club. He shared
Payne's view on Presley. "I wasn't a fan of his at all," he said. "You have to
keep in mind that he was just
starting out when he came here. He wasn't an overnight success."
"The guys didn't like it, but the girls sure did," Von Kanel chimed in with a
laugh. Brocato said he doesn't
remember a lot about the shows except when Elvis "did that little dance on the
stage with that shuffling of his
feet (and) the girls went wild."
Von Kanel admits she was one of those girls.
"Oh, I went wild," she said. "I was one of those girls screaming and hollering."
The Sacred Heart graduate said she first heard Presley perform at the Catholic
Club as the opening act for
Country Western stars Jim Ed and Maxine Brown. She saw him perform at least two
other times at the club.
"His voice and his actions; we'd never seen anything like that before," she
said. "This new rock 'n roll was
what the teenagers in my group were really eatin' up. We really loved it."
Brocato said he was there the night Presley was asked to leave the club, but he
only saw the crowd of girls
rush on the stage after the performance. Though he heard lots of rumors,
including that Presley was
"autographing their panties," he didn't actually see what happened.
Von Kanel quickly objected to that notion.
"I saw him autograph a girl's leg. She hiked her skirt up and he autographed her
thigh. I didn't see any
panties," she said.
Neither of them saw or heard the exchange with Father Keller.
Beauchamp, who was not there, said she was told by several parishioners at the
time that a "furious" Father
Keller told Presley, "You're a disgrace to manhood and don't come back anymore."
Von Kanel said she never saw that side of Presley. "We would all go backstage
and talk and visit and get
autographs. He was very congenial, very nice," Von Kanel said. "The guys hated
him."
"Looking back I don't see anything that was obscene or really bad about it, it
was just that we weren't used to
that," she added.
Fellow Helena resident Billie Jo Moore, 68, spoke about her Elvis experience in
an Oct. 5 telephone interview.
Moore graduated from Barton Public School in 1956 and she said she remembers
seeing Presley at the club
twice. The first time she went with girlfriends and they had to sit in the
bleachers because all the chairs on the
floor were full. "Kids from all the county schools went."
"He was an electrifying entertainer, but different from anything any of us had
ever seen," Moore said. "The
shock value was just tremendous." She said she wouldn't call what he did
indecent or inappropriate, but "it
was a stretch bordering on vulgar."
Presley even drew the attention of America, the national Jesuit magazine, in its
June 23, 1956, issue. Titled
"Beware Elvis Presley," the author quoted several newspapers around the country
that found Presley
troublesome. One described a performance in Wisconsin as a "'strip-tease with
clothes on,' (and was) not
only suggestive, but downright obscene."
Moore also recalled Presley's "God-awful colored clothes." The gold pants were
"gaudy," she said.
Nancy Norman, 68, is an Elaine High School graduate, also in 1956. Like Von
Kanel, she first heard Presley
at the Jim Ed and Maxine Brown show. "My mother wouldn't let me go unless my
Daddy went," she said in an
Oct. 5 telephone interview with Arkansas Catholic.
So Norman, her father and five or six girlfriends went and were "amazed" by what
they saw. "I thought he was
an awfully nice young man," she said.
Norman said she, her father and friends went backstage to introduce themselves
after the show and invited
Presley to eat dinner at the In Between, a former popular restaurant and hang
out. "He was so conscious of
his hair," she said. "He combed his hair more than anybody I ever saw in my
life."
"Then we followed him all over the countryside," she said.
Norman saw Elvis in shows in Earl, Wynne, Barton, Marianna and even Memphis,
eight times in all from
1955-56, with three of these at the Catholic Club in Helena.
Payne and Brocato both said in later years they grew to enjoy Presley's music.
"I never appreciated Elvis until
he died," Brocato added. "His songs about religion ... are really beautiful to
give him credit for it."
"I had the greatest respect for him for what he did," Payne said. "He pulled
himself up by the bootstraps with
the help of Colonel (Tom) Parker. He made a man out of him."

Elvis in His
Sights.
Fifty years ago, photographer
Alfred Wertheimer captured rare images of the essential
Elvis, stripped of the staging and packaging that would soon
engulf him.

Alfred Wertheimer shares the stories behind the
photos he took of Elvis in 1956, before the young man became
the King of Rock.
THE ELVIS OF THE SEQUINED WHITE SUIT, the Vegas
Elvis, would never have existed if there hadn't been the
natural Elvis, the kid with the sexy swagger, the
bottomless eyes and that angelic countenance riven by a
satanic sneer. This was the raw Elvis, the Elvis that
formed like a tropical storm over the simmering, steamy
South of the 1950s; the true Elvis, a caldron of erotic
power and kinetic connection to the roots music that had
been suppressed and ignored by mainstream America for
far too long. That Elvis was captured
and then pretty much embalmed when Col. Tom Parker, with
a notorious dislike for any kind of spontaneity, took
over management of Elvis's career, turned the artist
into an "act" and controlled all access to and
representations of Elvis.
Before that happened, however, a 26-year-old
photographer named Alfred Wertheimer traveled with Elvis
Presley in 1956 and made the extraordinary photographs on
these pages, along with many others that will appear in an
exhibition at the Govinda Gallery in Northwest Washington
that celebrates the book Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis,
edited by Govinda owner Chris Murray and to be published by
Insight Editions next month.
The exhibit
runs November 10 through December 30.

SUN sues SUN.

The Sun Record Co. logo, with its striking shades of vintage yellow and brown,
is one of the most recognizable designs in popular music history. It's also a
moneymaking trademark that the historic Sun Studio at 706 Union Ave. in Memphis
may no longer be able to use if the Nashville-based owner of Sam Phillips'
famous Sun Records has its way.
Sun Entertainment Corp. — started by Shelby Singleton Jr. after he purchased
Sun's assets from Phillips in 1969 — filed suit in federal court in Nashville
this week, contending that the separately owned Memphis studio is violating the
terms of a 1991 licensing agreement that governs the use of the logo.
The complaint says that the operators of the studio where Elvis Presley and
Johnny Cash first recorded are improperly using "colorable imitations" of the
logo in a way that avoids having to pay licensing royalties according to the
terms of the 15-year-old contract.
John Schorr, president and general manager of Sun Studio Entertainment, the
company that runs the Memphis studio, said he was "stunned" to learn about the
lawsuit when made aware of it by The Tennessean on Wednesday.
"The ownership and management of Sun (Entertainment) has been to Sun Studio on
many occasions spanning many years, without any indication of complaint about
our licensed use of the Sun Record logo," Schorr said in an e-mailed response.
Mark Patterson, the Nashville attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of Sun
Entertainment, said the company appears to be selling merchandise using
unauthorized logos that are almost identical to the trademarked Sun design. In
addition, Patterson said the studio's Web site streams music by Sun artists,
potentially im plying a false connection to master recordings owned by Sun
Entertainment company.
"We felt that some of the things they we're doing went beyond the scope of the
licensing agreement," Patterson said of the studio operators. "They pushed the
envelope too far."
The studio itself was originally started by Phillips in 1949 as the Memphis
Recording Service ("We Record Anything-Anywhere-Anytime"). The space mostly sat
empty from the late 1950s until 1987, when a Memphis musician and radio host
named Gary Hardy opened the Sun Studio as a tourist attraction, prompting a
lawsuit that resulted in the 1991 licensing agreement with Sun Entertainment.
Hardy filed for bankruptcy in 1995.
Neither Patterson nor Singleton could say how much money might be at stake with
this suit, though the Sun name has gained exposure in recent years with renewed
efforts to market Elvis memorabilia and last year's high-profile Johnny Cash
biopic, "Walk the Line."
"I really couldn't tell you how much money is at stake," Patterson said. "That's
part of the reason we filed this, so we could find out. "

ROCK ‘N ROLL’S YOUNGEST BODYGUARD.
Photo:Matt Barr who plays the young David Stanley and the gorgeous Danielle Keaton who plays his girlfriend and wife (left). David Stanley at the first screening of The Headhunter at the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills (right). The Real HeadHunter (center).
Trailer...
http://www.theheadhuntermovie.com/
Recently LA2DAY was invited to a sneak-peak movie event, one quite different to the average Hollywood release. Sitting inside the nostalgic and quaint Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills, a charismatic and energized middle aged man stepped onto the stage to welcome us all. He was David Stanley, the writer and director of the recently completed movie The Headhunter, which we were about to watch. His opening words, “I was four years old when I moved into Graceland…,” had us all listening intently.
David was 16 years old when he was plucked from high school to begin touring with his older step brother, The King, his new boss, Elvis Presley himself. David watched Elvis through both his music and movie careers and essentially lived through the ups & downs of his step brother’s turbulent and eccentric life. Elvis immediately accepted David as his new family when he moved into Graceland at the age of four and ultimately let him be his confidant and personal bodyguard. To Elvis, David was known as The Headhunter.
The Headhunter is an insightful reflection of what it was like for a young man to be thrown into a surreal and almost chaotic lifestyle in order to serve his famous boss. It was compelling to see how honest David Stanley was, in not only sharing his glorious moments, where his ego soared high because of having just protected his boss from an assassination attempt, but more so in sharing with us the self destructive consequences of living a life that offered everything but stability and self control.
All one can say is that this movie is an unbiased and honest depiction of what it was like to live in the proximity of rock and roll royalty. For any Elvis fan around the world, this will be a movie worth watching. There are some revealing moments, accompanied by the expected struggles. Ones not far different than the problems of the common man, except in Elvis’ case, illuminated by a thousand spotlights and nourished by his trustees against their own will. Shedding light on the vivid inner struggles of those that cared for him, as they involuntarily partook in their boss’ spiraling downwards. Those who dare say anything were shunned and even David, being family and possibly the last line of defense between Elvis and everyone else, The Headhunter wasn’t able to protect The King from himself.

Elvis Museum Closes Doors Until January For Renovations.
Music lovers must wait nearly three months to visit the Elvis Presley Museum. It’s closing for major renovations. The museum, housed at the site of the late singer’s birthplace, shut its doors after regular operating hours Friday so that Germantown Contracting can begin a $262,000 project to turn it into a world-class exhibit.
Some 50,000 people tour the museum each year, but the closure isn’t expected to hurt that number, said birthplace and museum director Dick Guyton. “If we have a slow time, this would be it,” he said. “A lot of tour companies don’t start tours until November. We’ve got eight or nine tours booked during this time, but they already know it, and ticket prices will be adjusted to charge them just for going through the house” where Elvis was born.
The house, gift shop, chapel and other attractions at the East Tupelo site will remain open, Guyton said.
When work wraps up on or before Elvis’ Jan. 8 birthday, the museum will sport a more modern look, feature multi-media elements and contain some new collection materials, including a memorial to Presley family friend Janelle Mc Comb. The renovations are expected to double museum attendance.
To fund the project, the Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation which runs the attraction put up $100,000. It received $50,000 from the Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau and $100,000 from the city. The remainder is being raised internally by foundation members.

Singer Freddy Fender Dies At Age 69 After Battle With Lung Cancer.
Singer Freddy Fender dies Freddy Fender, the "Bebop Kid" of the Texas-Mexico border who later turned his twangy tenor into the smash country ballad "Before the Next Teardrop Falls," died Saturday.
He was 69. Fender, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2006, died at noon at his Corpus Christi home with his family at his bedside, said Ron Rogers, a family spokesman.
Over the years, he grappled with drug and alcohol abuse, was treated for diabetes and underwent a kidney transplant.
Ron Rogers said Fender will be brought back to San Benito for a funeral and memorial services. Details on the arrangements were pending.
FREDDY FENDER Biography.
Photo: HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME STAR (1999)
Freddy Fender has had three successful careers already-as a Hispanic/pop star in the late 50's, a country pop star in the 70's, and a member of the Grammy award-winning Texas Tornadoes in the 90's. With his signing to Warner/Reprise, he begins a new chapter in an amazing career that spans nearly four decades.
Freddy Fender was born Baldemar Huerta in the Rio Grande Valley town of San Benito, Texas. He grew up in a barrio that, he is quick to point out, was not a crowded ghetto but just a poor Hispanic neighborhood. The first music he played was Tejano, conjunto, Tex-Mex- the rambunctious combination of polka (from the German settlers of Texas) and traditional Mexican music- he learned by watching and listening at weddings and other events in the neighborhood. In 1947, at the age of 10, he made his first appearance on radio, singing a current hit "Paloma Querida", on KGBT in Harlingen, Texas. Another performance of "Paloma Querida" (literally translated "dove" and "loved one") won him a tub of food worth about $10- first prize in an amateur talent contest at the Grand Theater in Harlingen.
At the same time, Fender was getting a first-hand education in the blues. His parents were migrant workers and he traveled with them during the picking season. Many of his fellow workers were black, and some of them, Fender remembers, were good enough singers and musicians to have been professionals. The blues music he heard in the fields would become an integral part of his own unique style.
At 16, he joined the Marines for a three year hitch. After his discharge, he started playing Texas honky tonks and dance halls. Two of his first records, Spanish versions of Elvis' "Don't Be Cruel" and Harry Belafonte's "Jamaica Farewell" on Falcon Records went to Number One in Mexico and South America in 1957. In 1959, Hollywood called him -- not to act but to sign to Imperial Records, the label of such greats as Fats Domino. In hopes of reaching the gringo audience, he changed his name, taking Fender from the headstock of his Electric guitar, and picking Freddy simply because it was alliterative.
In 1960, "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" became a national hit, it also proved to be prophetic for Fender. Early stardom was stolen that year when he and his bass player were arrested and sent to prison for possession of two marijuana cigarettes. Three years later, Fender surfaced in New Orleans, where he spent the next five years further developing his interest in rhythm & blues and Cajun funk. By 1969, Fender had returned home to "The Valley". He worked full time as a mechanic, enrolled at Del Mar College and played music only on weekends.
In 1974, he cut Before The Next Teardrop Falls" in Houston. The master was bought by ABC-Dot, and on April 8, 1975, it reached the Number One spot on Billboard's pop and county charts, the first time in history an artist's first single reached Number One on both charts. His remake of "Wasted Days And Wasted Nights," essentially the same arrangement that had been considered rock and roll the first time around, followed "Teardrop. . " to Number One on the country charts, and his third release, "Secret Love," and fourth release "You'll Lose A Good Thing" also hit the top spot. The album went multi-platinum. Billboard named him Best Male Artist of 1975, and he won both single and album-of the-year honors from The Gavin Report.
Fender's broad appeal has been reinforced by his success with cinema and television projects, including the Hispanic classics "Short eyes" and 'She Came To The Valley", as well as his breakthrough performance in Robert Redford's 1987 epic "Milagro Beanfield War". His voice has also been tapped for successful national radio and television campaigns for McDonald's, Miller Lite and others.
In the 90's, Freddy Fender's role as vocalist/guitarist in the Tex-Mex supergroup, Texas Tornados, has delivered the venerable performer to major marketplaces and audiences traditionally oriented toward roots rock and progressive blues music.
David Letterman recently introduced Fender to his Latenight audience as "one of the greatest voices in all of music."
Elvis Superband Ad a Smash Hit

A television promotional film showing Elvis Presley on stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder and The Who's
Keith Moon has become a surprise internet hit.
The clip, produced for the BBC to promote Radio 2, seamlessly merges concert footage of Elvis with shots of
other pop stars past and present to create the ultimate band.
The clip has been posted on the Graceland website and appears five times on the video-sharing site
YouTube, where it has been watched more than 50,000 times.
Elvis introduces his band of Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Page, Noel Gallagher, Keith Moon, Sheryl Crow and Stevie
Wonder, with the Sugababes as backing singers.
Apart from the Sugababes, all the footage is taken from music DVDs, YouTube and the BBC's own library.
A team of 25 people worked on merging the clips into film of Elvis's Aloha From Hawaii concert. The tagline is
"What an amazing line-up, all day every day" - a reference to the playlist of Radio 2.
The station's head of marketing, Rochelle Fox, said: "We've had a fantastic response from all over the world.
We've had people emailing and asking when it will next be on so they can watch it, which is quite unusual for
a promotional trailer.
"It's not shocking or salacious but it's really heartwarming. I hope people will look at it and realise that the
station is not just for their dads."
The film was developed by creative directors Brendan Wilkins and Rodney Kavanagh at advertising agency
DFGW.
It uses the voiceover talents of Tim Whitnell, an Elvis impersonator who also provides one of the Teletubbies'
voices.
Mr Wilkins said: "We have been absolutely astounded by the reaction. We were given the brief to come up
with an ad which reflected the diversity of Radio 2's music.
"We thought of creating a super-band and then I remembered the DVD I had of Elvis introducing his band in
Aloha, so we went through our iPods and came up with some of our favourite artists."

Sullivan shows with commercial breaks.
Elvis Presley's three appearances on ``The Ed Sullivan Show'' will be chronicled on the 3-disc DVD, set to be released Nov. 21.
All three shows will screen in their entirety, including appearances by other guests and the original commercial breaks.
Elvis first guested on Sullivan's show on Sept. 9, 1956, performing ``Love Me Tender,'' ``Don't Be Cruel'' featuring the Jordanaires, ``Hound Dog'' and ``Ready Teddy.'' His second, on Oct. 28, 1956, repeated the first three songs and added Leiber & Stoller's ``Love Me.''
A few months later, on Jan. 6, 1957, he was filmed only from the waist and above to obscure his dance movies, deemed at the time to be too racy for younger viewers.
He again sang ``Hound Dog,'' ``Love Me Tender'' and ``Don't Be Cruel,'' plus ``Too Much,'' ``When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again'' and ``Peace in the Valley.''
«The Sullivan Shows'» also includes a remastered 8mm home movie shot of Presley in 1955, home movies of his family and interviews with Sam Phillips, Gordon Stoker and ``Sullivan'' producer Marlo Lewis.
Elvis and Vegas Signs from Bogar Enterprises.
Following is a press release from Bogar Enterprises:
Developers of the Famous Welcome to Vegas Sign Announce Launch of Five New Products.
After reaching international success with the replica of The Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, Bogar Enterprises, LLC is launching five new themed souvenir products honoring additional recognized icons that represent Las Vegas and one of Las Vegas’ most loved performers, Elvis Presley. On the heels of the original sign’s success, Bogar has developed two new products licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises and one product with VEGAS.com. The company is also offering The Welcome to Las Vegas Sign replica as a night light.
The original Welcome to Las Vegas Sign replica has taken on a new look, honoring Elvis Presley’s life in Las Vegas. Bogar Enterprises has added Elvis singing “Viva Las Vegas” to the already successful Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, keeping the same iconic flashing lights and famous flashing star as the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, and adding a 30-second clip of Elvis’s hit song, an Elvis photo and a shiny plaque that reads “Viva Las Vegas.”
Fans can also look for the ELVIS ’68 Comeback Sign, a replica of the towering backdrop when Elvis performed his NBC television special, popularly known as The ’68 Comeback Special, which aired on December 3, 1968. That special was one of the biggest television hits of the year. The ELVIS ’68 Comeback sign features white Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) that display red lights and like the backdrop sign used on stage in 1968. Bogar’s replica adds a 43-second sound chip playing another one of Elvis’s most recognized tunes, “Don’t Be Cruel.”
Bogar Enterprises, collaborating with VEGAS.com the official Las Vegas travel Web site, has replicated the quintessential VEGAS.com logo into The Vegas Sign. The sign features VEGAS.com’s famous red arrow with white LEDs around the border and yellow LEDs in the word “VEGAS” that lights up, flashes and points visitors to Las Vegas. Launched in 1996, VEGAS.com garners more than 50,000 visitors from all over the world who take advantage of this site each day to book hotels, shows, night clubs, packages, golf tee times and more. Since its debut, VEGAS.com’s logo has become one of the most recognized icons associated with Las Vegas.
“Our original sign was very successful with tourists and locals they loved it. We wanted to build on the interest in the souvenirs and introduce new products that are representative of Las Vegas,” said Bob McMonigle, Owner and President of Bogar Enterprises, LLC. McMonigle continued, “No similar products exist and we are confident the new products will become just as popular as our original sign.”
The ELVIS ’68 Comeback Sign and The Welcome Viva Las Vegas Sign have a suggested retail price of $49.95. The Welcome to Las Vegas Sign has a suggested retail price of $39.95. The VEGAS Sign has a suggested retail price of $29.95 and the Welcome Nightlight has a suggested retail price of $9.95. These products can be purchased in casino gift stores, hotel gift stores, specialty stores and souvenir shops throughout Las Vegas. To purchase the signs online, visit

Elvis Presley's first recordings were with Sun Records, which sold its Elvis recording catalog to RCA Victor in the fall of 1955 as Presley reached the threshold of national stardom. Original Sun Records owner/producer Sam Phillips and his company played a pivotal role in the careers of not only Presley, but also Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas, Roy Orbison and many other legendary artists in rock, country and R&B music in the 1950s.
"Sun Records logo product has enjoyed many years of success with music lovers of all generations and, almost inarguably, the successful 50-year history of merchandising related to Elvis Presley is unrivaled," stated Sun Entertainment chairman Shelby S. Singleton. "Bringing Elvis and Sun Records back together in a special way at retail offers all kinds of exciting possibilities."
"The Sun Records logo is iconic because of the great music the label produced and the great artists it nurtured early in their careers, and Elvis was Sun's greatest star," said Carol Butler, EPE's vice-president of international licensing. "We are looking forward to celebrating Elvis Presley's history with Sun Records by working closely with Sun Entertainment. It's something we have long wanted to do, and now the time has finally come."
The new Elvis and Sun Records co-branded products should begin appearing in late 2006 via various retail outlets in the United States, including online retailers such as
www.SunRecords.com and
www.ShopElvis.com. More will appear in 2007 during the yearlong commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Elvis' passing.

Oprah at Graceland....admitted on camera to bein Elvis' cousin!!!
It was pretty cool!
She toured the mansion with Gayle King and they absolutely were amazed at it.
Lisa and her husband joined them for a HUGE dinner of Elvis' favorite foods.
They had table talk about Elvis and Lisa's memories of Elvis, and Lisa said her aunt embarrassed her one time when she had a crush on this boy, and her aunt yelled out "Lisa, have are you havin your PM today".
They visited a top secret place on the grounds and asked the crew to turn off their cameras even.
In the underground vault, there was different items from original movie posters, the red promo vest Elvis wore for the 68 Comeback, his 72 gold glasses he would wear on tour. and other things.
My guess is that all that stuff will be on display soon.
Oprah told Lisa on camera that her great grandmother is Elvis' and Lisa said 'really" and then Oprah said "remember, I told you about that before" and Lisa said I must have had a time warp or somethin, lol.
Then Lisa said, "wow, so we're family" and then Oprah called her cousin 3 times.
Oprah said she is a big fan and has seen all the movies and thought at one time she was gonna get to meet him. So she must have known she was related even when he was livin.
Oprah built Elvis, Memphis and Lisa up on today's show. I was soo proud of it all!
They visited the CVM to pay respects to Dr King.
She was so amazed at the ducks at the Peabody Hotel.

Black Velvet Elvis.

(ISBN: 0889842779).
Issued for October 28, 2006 a 96 pages book by John Black und J. D. Black.
Synopsis:
"In this brilliant and unusual first book of poems, J. D. Black salutes The King not only with the occasional electric guitar but with stranger and more delicate melodies as well, a few strummed out on the dulcimer, others twanged along the nerves. Black reveals himself as a master of difficult forms extending from rondeaux and villanelles to mischievous haiku. But it would be mistaken to see him merely as a skilled traditionalist.
Amid the high polish of the poems rough surprises abound. The menacing redneck Len surfaces in several 'vignettes', his beery but robust visage scarcely contained by the strict sonnets through which he elbows. In these sly poems, Len, resplendent in his white Cadillac or cursing the 'sumbitch stepdaddy' of his squeeze, contrasts sharply with the sad diminished figure of Elvis, moping in a Quebec 'Gas-Bar de la Nuit'.
Black moves expertly from witty light verse to elegies as graceful as they are moving. In 'Last Train Out' the sense of loss of a Holocaust survivor is evoked through an abandoned stamp album. In 'Canis Lupus', the wolf hidden inside the dog is unleashed. This is a dazzling collection of superb craft and subtle mischief by a poet whose work has for too long remained a private delight.

In February, 2007 a new book will be issued by Charlie Connelly entitled In Search of Elvis.
336 pages - publisher: Brown Little Verlag.
Synopsis:
"Since his death in 1977 Elvis Presley has become an even greater cultural icon than when he was making records and consuming deep-fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches.
IN SEARCH OF ELVIS sees Charlie Connelly set off on a journey to discover what makes Elvis so significant today and how his spirit is being kept alive more than half a century after he changed popular culture for ever. Charlie's odyssey takes him to Finland to meet an academic who performs Elvis songs in long-dead languages - while wearing a kilt; to Canada to find the orthodox Jewish Elvis tribute artist, Schmelvis; to Scotland to get fitted out with the Presley tartan; and culminates in Memphis, where Charlie stays at the Heartbreak Hotel (which is at the end of Lonely Street) and records a song in Sun Studio, the very room where Elvis arguably invented rock'n'roll.
Hilarious yet informative, and written with Charlie Connelly's customary wit and charm, this book will appeal to Elvis fans of all ages, plus the many travel-book aficionados who delighted in ATTENTION ALL SHIPPING."
Joe Guercio speaks about the songs Elvis should have recorded.
ELVIS Presley's musical director is speculating on the songs that The King should have done in his performing career, and for him, there's one particular tune that really stands out.
"I always wanted him to do Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. He coulda sung the shit outta that sucker," laughs Joe Guercio, who first teamed up with Elvis in the summer of 1970.
Guercio, who's in Australia heading up the Elvis Presley in Concert tour which will arrive at the Entertainment Centre on Thursday night, was music director and conductor for all Elvis' concerts until his death in 1977. The two-hour concert features 28 songs identified with the King, performed by the original Elvis band and a 16-piece orchestra. Elvis may have left the planet, but his voice and image will be to the fore on two giant screens at Boondall. A similar production graced Oz stages at the turn of the millennium, but the current line-up represents a more substantial production.
This writer had the pleasure of catching the 25th anniversary show commemorating Presley's passing at the Pyramid Coliseum in Memphis in 2002, and it was a magnificent occasion. We won't have Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley in Brisbane, but there will be thousands of satisfied fans. Those attending the show will also have the opportunity to see a rare exhibition of Presley memorabilia from Graceland, including the distinctive stage outfits he wore in the 1969-73 period.
"I think it's fantastic," beamed Joe Guercio. "It's like getting in the trenches with the guys."
Guercio, who first visited Australia as music director for evergreen R&B act Gladys Knight and the Pips 25 years ago, was musical director for the International Hotel in Las Vegas when he first encountered Elvis and company. He was flown to LA to meet up with the King's manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
"I went out to the MGM studio lot and found that the Colonel's bungalow was in fact a kitchen. So my first meal with the Colonel and Elvis was a bologna sandwich (a cold meat something like our windsor sausage) and a Diet Pepsi." A bit of a fan of the Colonel, Guercio said he gave him a plaque for his 85th birthday which read: "Happy 85th and thanks for the education."
"And that's my feeling about him. No matter what stuff they came up with about him later, there would have been no Elvis without him. Who would have taken him out of Memphis?" Guercio spends about a third of his working life on the Presley touring agenda: "I do a lot of stage production stuff for other people, such as the group Trick Pony. I recently did a gospel album with the Stamps and the Imperials." One aspect of the Elvis tour life closely associated with Guercio is the opening music the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey (Also Sprach Zarathustra) which was his suggestion.
"I'd gone to see the classic sci-fi film in a theatre with my late wife, and when the dramatic music began for the movie, she whispered to me, 'You'd think Elvis was about to enter'. It went on to become a classic opening in itself for the Elvis concerts," he says, rather proudly.
Charlie Hodge wins EM Award.
With 49 percent of the votes, there was no doubt that Charlie Hodge, who passed away last March, was the winner of the prestigious ElvisMatters Award 2006.
Jenson Bloomer, who performed with Charlie several times, flew in from the UK to accept the award on behalf of Charlie’s family.

The members of ElvisMatters couldn’t have made a better choice.
Charlie and Elvis are together again, and this award will get a special place of honor in Charlie’s house, I’m sure.”

Elvis Presley And Johnny Cash - Road Show.

Set for release on October 30, 2006 is the DVD / CD combination "Elvis Presley And Johnny Cash - Road Show". This release comes with region code 2.
Synopsis:
Sun Records, the brainchild of Sam Phillips, began life at 706 Union Avenue, Memphis in 1949. Sam Phillips' motto was "We Record Anything - Anywhere - Anytime" and in 1954 he signed the first of what was to become known as the Million Dollar Quartet: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.
In 1954 Elvis actually paid Sun Records for the privilege of making his first recording and Johnny Cash finally plucked up the courage to audition for Sam Phillips¿ and Sam was singularly unimpressed - by either of them. Luckily, they persevered and he changed his mind and thus began the rise of two of the greatest stars of the music world.
This amazing DVD captures over 30 of the early performances of Presley and Cash as they were taking their first steps on the ladder to stardom and international fame and on the accompanying audio CD they are joined by their Million Dollar Quartet cohorts, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins in a truly memorable collection of recordings

Official Press Release - Elvis Presley: The Ed Sullivan ShowOfficial Press Release on the "Elvis Presley:

Image Entertainment, Inc. (Nasdaq: DISK), a leading independent licensee, producer and distributor of home entertainment programming in North America, celebrates the legend of ELVIS PRESLEY with the first-ever DVD release of the undisputed king of rock n’ roll’s historic earth-shattering performances in ELVIS PRESLEY: THE ED SULLIVAN SHOWS. This 3-disc special edition DVD set will debut November 21.
Produced by Grammy and Emmy-award winning producer Andrew Solt (Imagine: John Lennon, This Is Elvis, The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Heroes of Rock ‘n’ Roll), the DVD consists of the three complete Ed Sullivan Shows on which Elvis made rock ‘n’ roll and TV history. Elvis first appeared on the show September 9, 1956 and sent shockwaves through a repressed post-war America--effectively opening a generational rift between parents and their children--with his soulful singing, sexual hip gyrations and raw rock n’ roll energy. Elvis attracted a record-breaking audience of over 72 million people--more than 80% of the television-viewing audience--which equaled one of every third man, woman and child in the U.S. at that time. Viewing Elvis Presley’s three appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in their entirety frames the context of the country’s appetite for entertainment in 1956. By glimpsing this time capsule Elvis’s raw, confident and casual performances illustrates why he was so charismatic and how he captured the imagination of the world.
On his first Sullivan appearance, Elvis performed from CBS Television City in Hollywood while he was on the West Coast shooting his first feature film Love Me Tender. Although the movie was two months away from release and the single was not available in stores, Elvis debuted the song “Love Me Tender” that night on the show; he followed it up with “Don’t Be Cruel” (with the Jordanaires), “Ready Teddy” and “Hound Dog.” Elvis returned on October 28, 1956 this time in New York, triggering ecstatic screams from the largely teen audience while performing his current hits “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Love Me Tender” and “Hound Dog.” This time around, he added Lieber & Stoller’s “Love Me” to his playlist. Elvis’s inspired performances as well as his growing reputation for hip shaking and sensual gyrations convinced CBS’s censors that The Ed Sullivan Show should film him only above the waist during his third and final appearance on January 6, 1957. On this final Sullivan show, Elvis performed “Hound Dog,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Too Much,” “When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again” and “Peace In The Valley.” After the show went off without incident, Ed Sullivan proclaimed him, “A real decent fine boy.” Sullivan, in his inimitable style, further thanked Elvis by adding, “We’ve never had a pleasanter experience on our show with a big name than we’ve had with you…You’re thoroughly all right.” This was the last time Elvis would appear live on American television.
Since the DVD features the three Sullivan shows in their entirety, there are other historic variety show appearances by guests such as Carol Burnett, novelty artist Señor Wences, various Broadway stars, athletes such as boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, tennis great Don Budge, baseball legend Jackie Robinson and numerous comedians. Each of the three shows run about one hour and all include the original commercials, which aired as part of the show’s live broadcast. The 3-disc special edition DVD features re-mastered Dolby Digital 5.1 audio as well as the original mono soundtrack. The Kinescope video has been enhanced by a breakthrough technical process--created by a company called Live Feed--resulting in an optimal sound and visual experience.
Special bonus features include: a rare color 8mm home movie shot in 1955 which is the first-ever recorded footage of a very young Elvis (age 20) who was not yet managed by Col. Tom Parker; special Elvis moments including an appearance by comedian John Byner; and home movies of Elvis and Priscilla with some of the earliest shots of their daughter Lisa Marie. In addition, the package includes insightful interviews and reminiscing with legendary producer Sam Phillips of Sun Records, Gordon Stoker of the Jordanaires, Marlo Lewis, producer of these three historic Ed Sullivan Shows, renowned television host Wink Martindale; High School buddy and Memphis DJ George Klein and Elvis’s close friend and Memphis Mafia member Jerry Schilling, author of Me And A Guy Named Elvis. The impressive package also includes a collectible booklet about Elvis on Sullivan featuring liner-notes written by pre-eminent rock scribe, Greil Marcus.

DVD Liner Notes Essay:
Elvis Presley: The Ed Sullivan Shows
By Greil Marcus
1956 was the year Elvis Presley went national: “This year,” as a pitchman put it on The Ed Sullivan Show on July 1, “the most competitive of the post-war period.” The strange character with a string of singles on the independent Sun label in Memphis, uproarious and scandalous shows across the South, the creature with a name, a face, and clothes that spoke for a place most Americans would have sworn wasn’t on the map: suddenly he was everywhere.
Topping the pop and country charts and very nearly the R&B chart as well, Elvis’s first single on the major label RCA Victor, “Heartbreak Hotel,” was released on Friday, January 27; the next day Elvis appeared for the first time on national television, with the first of six dates on Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey’s Stage Show. It was a low-rated variety hour; on that first night staffers sent out to Times Square in New York City truly could not give tickets away. Within weeks the audience had spiraled, and everyone was after Elvis. On April 3, ten days after the last Dorsey spot, came the first of two appearances on The Milton Berle Show, a step up. On July 1, it was the new Steve Allen Show on NBC—in direct Sunday night competition with the ruling juggernaut of American television, The Ed Sullivan Show on CBS. After watching Elvis’s shocking leg movements to “Hound Dog” on The Milton Berle Show, Sullivan had pronounced him “unfit for family viewing,” but then the numbers came in. Sullivan scored 14.8 for an ambitious, imaginative show devoted entirely to a tribute to the film director John Huston, whose Moby-Dick would premiere that week. The Allen swamped the whale with 20.2.
Beginning on September 9, Elvis’s three appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show focused the nation. As if in counterpoint to the contest between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his challenger Adlai Stevenson then just underway, the country tuned in, and suddenly you were on one side or the other. Was Elvis Presley a sexual predator, offering fantasies of ravishment to girls and rape to boys? A black man disguised as a white man? The hood who menaced you for your lunch money on your way to school and your new jacket on the way home? A homosexual in a pink shirt and dripping with make-up? A threat to all rules, of every kind, from every source, family, church, the law? Or was he the most exciting thing you’d ever seen? And was there a difference?
As you trace Elvis’s journey through the country in 1956, you can feel the tension build. From show to show, month to month, as Berle or Allen or Sullivan flitted around the ever more relaxed, seemingly invulnerable Presley, you enter a queer drama, where legitimate, northern, fully socialized and socializing individuals, great celebrities secure in their belief that they will and deserve to be remembered forever, try eagerly, or desperately, to at once distance themselves from and attach themselves to the Memphis Flash in the pan. It’s a trend, they’re going to ride it out, they were here before he was and they’ll be here when he’s gone, but they’re like moths drawn to his flame. Berle in a skit where girls tear his clothes off, then in another where he presents himself as Elvis’s twin brother, “Melvin,” who “taught Elvis everything he knew” (a sick, if not cruel idea, given the still-birth of Elvis’s real twin brother, Jesse Garon). Allen dressing Elvis in white tie and tails and forcing him to sing “Hound Dog” to a basset hound, and then Sullivan, for Elvis’s second appearance on his show, attempting an Elvis shuffle: “I can’t figure this thing out. He just goes like this—and everybody yells.” They can’t help hinting, all but shouting in their scripted confusion, that they have no idea what’s going on—or what might come next. It was a drama of anxiety, and never so well played as by the British actor Charles Laughton, for Elvis’s first night on The Ed Sullivan Show.
It was September 9, and the occasion was categorically different from anything that had come before. The Ed Sullivan Show marked Elvis’s first steps on the national stage, when a public much closer to everyone than had ever gathered before—more than eighty percent of the television audience, fully one of every three man, woman, girl or boy in the nation—was watching. “I have interviewed hundreds of people who saw Elvis at the small-time shows, while Elvis was still at Sun,” the producer Ernst Jørgensen wrote me in 2006. “These people refer to the show they saw and then almost everyone says ‘and then we saw him on Ed Sullivan.’ NOBODY ever says they saw him on the Dorsey Show, Milton Berle, or Steve Allen.” That was true from one end of the country to the other--and in a sense even those who weren’t watching were watching, as in the story the movie director David Lynch told the interviewer Chris Rodley some thirty years later. “Do you remember when you passion for music started?” Rodley asked. “Oh, absolutely,” Lynch said. “The exact moment. It gets dark, you know, very late in Boise, Idaho in the summer”—and summer in the west extends into what for the rest of the country is the fall. “It was not quite dark, so it must have been, like, maybe nine o’clock at night, I’m not sure . . . Deep shadows were occurring. And it was sort of warm. And Willard Burns came running towards me from about three houses down the street, and he said, ‘You missed it!’ and I said, ‘What?’ and he said, ‘Elvis on Ed Sullivan!’ And it just, like, set a fire in my head. How could I have missed that? And this was the night, you know. But I’m kind of glad I didn’t see it; it was a bigger event in my head because I missed it.”
Sullivan was still recuperating from an auto accident when the first of Presley’s contracted appearances on his show fell; Laughton filled in as host for the hour-long variety hour, a totalistic version of a vaudeville revue. The Ed Sullivan Show explicitly promised something for everyone, which meant that nothing would offend anyone, and that everyone would like everything. For tens of millions, it was the Pledge of Allegiance every Sunday night. The show presumed a single national audience, one nation, indivisible; the act of watching made you a citizen. But the map was shifting.
Presley was the headliner, and a Sullivan headliner normally opened the show, but Sullivan was burying him. Laughton had to make the moment invisible: to act as if nobody was actually waiting for anything. He did it instantly, with complete command, with the sort of television presence that some have and some—Steve Allen, or Ed Sullivan himself—don’t. It’s a sense of ease, a querulous interrogation of the medium itself, affirming one’s own odd, irreducible subjectivity against the objectivity enforced by any system of representations: that is, getting it across that at any moment that you might forget where you are and say whatever comes into your head, which was exactly what half the country hoped and half the country feared might be the case with Elvis Presley. This night, Laughton was a near-ringer for Alfred Hitchcock, at the time opening and closing every episode Alfred Hitchcock Presents—less dry, sloppy in an upper-class way, unforbidding, but with the same inscrutability, the same casual refusal to give in.
He began by reading a few terrible poems, and then some better limericks, including a vulgar five-liner about “good class music”—the first dig that what everyone knew was coming. And then, five acts in—the Amin Brothers, an acrobatic duo who climaxed with one of them executing a headstand on the upraised foot of the other; the Broadway singer Dorothy Sarnoff, in formal gown and long gloves on a mansion set; the comedy polka band the Vagabonds; the smarmy tap dancers Conn and Mack—with Elvis’s first songs, via remote from Hollywood, a surprisingly mild, cautious set comprised of “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Love Me Tender,” having already filled the fourth spot—Laughton claimed the stage again. He noted that “in presenting something for everyone, I feel we have neglected the children.” He discussed the sadism inherent in children’s stories, such as “Little Red Riding Hood.” Laughton reprised the tale, with the Big Bad Wolf eating grandma, putting on her nightgown and nightcap to wait for Little Red Riding Hood in grandma’s bed, all but drooling his way through “‘What big eyes you have, grandma. What big teeth you have, grandma’—enough,” Laughton said with indignation, “to mark a child for life!”
“I brought a modern version of this story to read to you tonight, by James Thurber,” Laughton said. “It’s called ‘The Little Girl and the Wolf’—no, madam,” he said to a voice from somewhere, “it’s not that kind of a story.” He read: “‘She’d approached no nearer than twenty-five feet when she saw it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge. So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.” Laughton paused to savor the modern world: “‘Moral: It’s not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.’”
Can we decode this moment—which is only a fancy way of saying, what was happening? What was Laughton saying? The little girls in the audience had already screamed, as if on cue, when Elvis rolled his eyes in “Love Me Tender.” Who was being fooled? Who was being set up? For the first of his two appearances that night, as a performer Elvis had come on dressed in grandma’s nightgown and nightcap. With a songs yet to come later in the show, would he reveal himself as the wolf—and would Little Red Riding Hood pull out her automatic, or jump in bed?
After three ghastly acts—one Amru Sani from the Broadway revue New Faces; the comedian-magician Carl Ballantine, jiggling a deck of cards on a string as “Preview of coming attractions—Next week: Elvis Presley”; Toby the Dog, which knocked over a champagne bottle and mimed defecating into a pot—Elvis was back. Earlier, he stood before the Jordainaires, his vocal backup quartet, his band off-screen. Now they were all there, Elvis, Scotty Moore on guitar, Bill Black on stand-up bass, D. J. Fontana on drums, three Jordanaires on their feet, one at a piano. They were shown from behind; the camera pulled all the way back. They went into “Ready Teddy.” It was Little Richard’s most thrilling record, there was no way Elvis was going to catch him, but he didn’t have to—the song is a wave and he rode it.
Compared to moments on the Dorsey shows, on the Berle show, it was ice cream—Elvis’s face unthreatening, his legs as if in casts—but it didn’t matter. The thrill and fear that comes when the outsider, the barbarian, the stranger most of all, enters the mainstream, the public square where no one can turn away, where none can say they didn’t know, that they didn’t have to choose—was present. And that, for the country at large, was what made Elvis’s first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show an event, as if what he did that night was more shocking by half than anything anyone had seen in the previous eight months. Compared to Elvis’s performances on the first Sullivan show, what happened on the Dorsey shows—Elvis all but bursting out of dark clothes, his eyes almost blackened with shadow, his hair impossibly high, Moore and Black at his sides as if the three were an advance patrol behind enemy lines, the whole performance shot for lights flaring up in gloom—was back-alley noir compared to Sulllivan’s Broadway, less family entertainment than muggings at one end of the street and five-dollar tricks turned against the wall at the other, but the breadth of the moment told its own story. The country singer Butch Hancock was one of the sixty million people who watched. “That was the dance that everybody forgot,” he told the journalist Michael Ventura many years after the fact. “It was the dance that was so strong it took an entire civilization to forget it. And ten seconds on The Ed Sullivan Show to remember it.”
With Sullivan back to host Elvis’s second and third appearances, story played itself out. On October 28, following the Little Gaelic Singers from County Derry—not that little; they were all old enough to be regulars on American Bandstand—Elvis came out looking pleased, at home. He reprised “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Love Me Tender.” He laughed at himself, burlesqued his performance, as he would throughout the night—except for odd moments, as with “Love Me,” in his second of three segments, when, after “Oh, so lonely,” with the camera in close he simply stopped, and a quiet smile drifted across his face, a moment of beauty and peace, just before he remembered to lift his upper right lip. He closed with “Hound Dog.” He was burned in effigy in Nashville and St. Louis; the ratings were huge.
“I SPOKE TO SULLIVAN TODAY AND THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME MISUNDERSTANDING REGARDING PRESENTATION OF PRESLEY,” Elvis’s manager, Tom Parker, had written in a telegram to his agent, Harry Kaclcheim of the William Morris Agency, on July 12, just after the Elvis-in-tails Steve Allen Show. “I WILL DO WHATEVER IS FAIR BUT MUST INSIST ON COMPLETE CONTROL OF PRESENTATION AS TO SONGS WE HAD TOO MUCH ADVERSE PUBLICITY ON LAST SHOW REGARDNG ELVIS BEING TIED DOWN TOO MUCH AT LEAST TEN TO ONE.” If anyone had tied Elvis down on his first two appearances on the Sullivan Show, it was Elvis himself, but on his third and final appearance, on January 6, 1957, the notorious night when Elvis was shown only from the waist up—not only for “Hound Dog” and “Heartbreak Hotel,” but even for the closing spiritual, “Peace in the Valley”—Elvis did not tie himself down. Leaving behind the bland clothes he had worn on the first two shows, he stepped out in the outlandish costume of a pasha, if not a harem girl. From the make-up over his eyes, the hair falling in his face, the overwhelmingly sexual cast of his mouth, he was playing Rudolph Valentino in The Shiek, with all stops out. That he did so in front of the Jordanaires, who this night appeared as the four squarest-looking men on the planet, made the performance even more potent. Though the self-parody remained, the strangeness was back.
In a show highlighted by the national television debut of “a very pretty young comedienne,” as Sullivan introduced Carol Burnett, who did a series of impressions of hapless female singers auditioning on Broadway, a breathtaking routine from the British ventriloquist Arthur Worsley, and more than eleven endless minutes devoted to the Broadway musical The Most Happy Fella, Elvis didn’t fit. Every time you looked at him, you wondered who he was, what he was doing there: where, in his heart, he really was. There was a time in the second of his three segments that night, in the midst of “When My Blue Moon Turned to Gold Again,” when a kind of vortex opened up, and there was a moment of suspension. In a close-up, the uniqueness of Elvis’s face escaped from its presentation; for an instant, he was too handsome, and too handsome in too different a way, for the show, for any show, for the spectacle he himself had enacted throughout the previous year, to contain. “May God bless you as he’s blessed me,” Elvis had said with eloquence and feeling as he closed his performance on October 28, but on the last night no words so clear would have done, and so, outside of the eloquence of the Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey’s words in “Peace in the Valley,” there were none.
“It’s an adventure story,” John Huston had said to Sullivan of his film of Moby-Dick back on July 1, when the failure of that show against the ratings Steve Allen piled up opened the national door that, in the second half of the year, Elvis walked through: “An adventure of the spirit as well as of the flesh.” He could have been back on that last night, stepping out just as Elvis disappeared into darkness at the close of “Peace in the Valley,” to say exactly the same thing.

This exclusive Tribute is the fourth commemorative firearm America Remembers has created to honor the legend of Elvis Presley, and we are proud to offer it on one of the most powerful firearms ever used in American law-enforcement: the Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver.
Craftsmen commissioned specifically for this project by America Remembers decorate each working Smith & Wesson revolver in sparkling 24-karat gold and nickel artwork, a perfect canvas to capture the likeness of this remarkable musical legend. Prominently featured on each Tribute is the special “TCB”® logo Elvis shared with his closest friends and associates. With a lightning bolt striking from the bottom, the logo translates to “Taking Care of Business in a Flash,” an idea that encapsulates both the charisma and character of this magnetic entertainer.
Whether serving his country overseas, playing on-stage, or performing on-screen, Elvis touched the lives of countless adoring fans and today remains one of the most popular figures world-wide. During his career and throughout his life, Elvis collected firearms and loved to shoot. Original Elvis photos to be published in Jimmy Velvet's new book.

Jimmy Velvet is working on a new book to be titled "Inside The Dream: The Jimmy Velvet Story" due out in August 2007. As a performer in the 1950s, Jimmy toured with just about everyone in the Rock'n' Roll business including Elvis. And best of all he, always had his camera at hand to capture some fabulous candid moments in the history of popular music. The book will be about his life from the beginning and will feature the best of his 6000 unpublished negatives which document the Rock N' Roll Era. Jimmy will also include some wonderful stories about Elvis on the road, as well as his time spent relaxing at Graceland. It will be a large Coffee Table Book of the finest quality and will have hundreds of truly never seen photos - including some great candid Elvis shots & many, many others. Jimmy told EIN that the hardest job was having to choose only one of every 15 photos in order to supply the 400-500 photos that will fit in the book.

The Elvis Presley Show - Holding Down The Fort.
Here is the covert art of the next Madison release '' The Elvis Presley Show - Holding Down The Fort ''.
The Madison label will soon release a double CD set titled " The Elvis Presley Show - Holding Down The Fort, " featuring the much-heralded Fort Worth, Texas concert from June 3, 1976. About five years ago Madison issued portions of this show, unfortunately far from complete and in lesser sound quality. However, this 2006 collection will be taken from a first generation soundboard recording in excellent sound quality. The recording is not without any flaws as there are quite a few feedbacks during '' C. C. Rider '', a tape stretch at the end of side A damaged "Jailhouse Rock," and the recording of "Hound Dog" was stopped early on. These have been replaced by the same tunes done just one month later in the same building. However, the incomplete June performances are included as a bonus for the "soundboard collector" in all of us. And the packaging will include a 16 page, illustrated booklet with relevant text. But there's more!
For the first time, this " 30th Anniversary Edition " will feature all the music from the " pre-show, " with Joe Guercio and the Hot Hilton Horns, J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, and The Sweet Inspirations. All these performances will be as presented that night in Fort Worth. Highlights from the first CD include " When The Saints Go Marching In " and "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the Stamps, and the Sweet Inspirations energetic vocals on " Philadelphia Freedom, " " Lady Marmalade " and a medley of Stevie Wonder hits. The stand up comedian Jackie Kahane's set was not recorded and will not appear on this release.
Elvis' concert itself will feature all the tracks previously released on Madison's Cajun Tornado, but this time in much better sound quality from the first generation soundboard recording and in unbroken running order. Some of the previously unreleased performances will include " If You Love Me (Let Me Know), " " Heartbreak Hotel, " " Help Me " and many more. Don't miss the dynamic 1976 return of The Elvis Presley Show to Cowtown!!!
