SHE'S NOT A BRIT LIKE ELVIS.

AS Britney Spears unravels before our eyes, some people have glimpsed the ghost of Elvis Presley, in all his sad decline.

I can't see it myself. Although Elvis was in bad shape near the end of his short life, the great man never really made a public spectacle of himself as Britney did when she was angrily waving around her umbrella like Disgusted of Beverly Hills.

Elvis put on the pounds. He sometimes forgot the words to the songs that made him famous, and he was so far gone that he thought the lapse was amusing. He often looked lost in a thick fog of drugs and medication.

But Elvis never looked as clinically barmy as Britney did when she was raving outside her ex-husband's house with her umbrella and her gym clothes and her shaven head.

Elvis died at 42. Still in her mid-20s, Britney may look 42, but that is where all similarity ends. By the time Elvis entered his decline, he had changed popular music like no one before or since.

What he effectively did was smash down the racial barriers that kept music in ghettos.

Before Elvis, there was black music and there was white music and there was country music and there was urban music. After Elvis, there was only music. And he was beautiful too. Like Muhammad Ali, Presley's looks were somehow inseparable from his great gift. Elvis and Ali had to look like that - all that speed, all that fire, all that passion. They could look no other way.

You will notice that Elvis impersonators rarely try to look like the man as he did in 1956 or 1968. They impersonate sad, fat, dying Elvis, because it is impossible to replicate The King in his prime and all his pomp and glory.

Fat, mad and bald she may be, but Britney Spears is no Elvis Presley. As she enters her own lonely decline, the poor girl is more like Danny DeVito in one of his angrier roles.

This summer it will be 30 years since the death of Elvis Presley and in my house we will mourn him by playing Viva Las Vegas at top volume.

Will the wicked world mourn Britney Spears even 30 months after her death?

Hidden Obsession Of Cafeteria Lady.

After 49 years of marriage, Richard O. Mitchell understood his wife, Rena, very well, but he never did understand that thing she had for Elvis Presley.
"She was a real nut on that," he said. "I have no idea how she got so fanaticized over him. I used to tell her, 'When you go, I'm going to junk all that stuff,' and she'd say I better not."

Mrs. Mitchell died Feb. 24 at an Indianapolis rehabilitation center. She was 69. The thousands of students pushing their lunch trays through the cafeteria line at Warren Central High School for about 30 years never suspected Mrs. Mitchell, the friendly head cashier, was such an Elvis devotee. Mrs. Mitchell knew the words to Elvis' songs and played Elvis CDs, but she knew better than to ask her husband to grow his sideburns long or add a spangled jumpsuit and cape to his wardrobe.

"She was a top-notch fan," her husband said. "She adored him and she loved him, but she wasn't a teeny-bopper over him, if you know what I mean. "It was kind of one of those things that happened, and I went along with it. I didn't have any choice."

He went with her to an Elvis concert in Indianapolis, but he mostly concentrated on leaving in time to get to his job by midnight. He retired in 1990 as a general supervisor at Ford's engine assembly plant in Indianapolis. "Rena had boxes of Elvis memorabilia stored in the garage," Mitchell said. "I have no idea what to do with it. I don't know why anyone would want it."

The Mitchells met on a blind date in 1953. "We went to Riverside Park to ride the rides. That was the place to go. I was a perfect gentleman on that date. I wasn't going to push my luck." She made an immediate impression: "She struck me as a person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. It was a gut feeling. She was what you might call my first love." After their daughters had graduated from Warren Central, Mrs. Mitchell took a job washing dishes in the cafeteria kitchen.

"She kind of hit it off with the boss and became a cashier and then head cashier," her husband said. "She loved her job and she loved the kids. Knowing her, I'm sure she helped out if a student was a little short, but she was a bulldog if someone tried to steal something. She went after them and caught them." She retired in 2004.

Services will be at noon Friday at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St., with calling there from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Other survivors include daughters Kim Pope and Pam Broschart and a brother, Roy Hensley.

Elvis Meets Shakespeare - Sort Of.

Elvis meets Shakespeare - sort of -in the jukebox musical "All Shook Up" opening today at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati. "All Shook Up" is part of the recent genre of musicals that takes the songs and/or music of a singer or musical group and builds a story around the material. The most successful and artful in the jukebox form was "Movin' Out," in which Twyla Tharp set some rousing dances to Billy Joel's music. Most popular and more forced is "Mamma Mia," in which ABBA songs are squeezed into a contrived romance.

Now, from last season on Broadway, comes "All Shook Up." But don't expect an Elvis stage biography, says its star Susan Anton. "It's a delightful piece," she said. "It takes place in about 1955. It uses a great many of Elvis' songs." The roster of 24 Presley songs includes "Love Me Tender," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," "It's Now or Never," "Blue Suede Shoes" and, of course, the title song.

" 'All Shook Up' is not about Elvis, "which is always important for people to know," Anton said. "They're not going to come and see a show about Elvis, but they're gonna hear his music," explained Anton, a former Miss California (1969) and second runner-up for Miss America. "It takes place in a fictional town in the middle of nowhere where nothing ever happens. Everybody is heartbroken.

"Enter our motorcycle-riding, leather-jacketed, guitar-playing roustabout played by Joe Mandragona. His name is Chad in the piece. "He's not Elvis, but he has an Elvis-like resemblance."

HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW CELEBRATES ITS 75th YEAR.

The Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show, where Elvis made his first live performances since 1961 is celebrating its 75th year. In 1970, Elvis’ six-shows at the Houston Astrodome attracted an audience of over 200,000, where he was also presented with gold records for the two albums From Elvis In Memphis and From Memphis To Vegas, From Vegas To Memphis and his 1969 hit records Don’t Cry Daddy, In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds.

The Livestock show originated in 1932 at the Sam Shouston Hall as the Houston Fat Stock Show. When Elvis appeared the show was held at the Houston Astrodome, but is now housed at the Reliant Stadium where 1.7million visitors are expected in this celebration year, with guest entertainers that include George Strait and Beyoncé – not together though!

WHILE ANOTHER HISTORIC SITE IS IN PERIL.

The future of the Dallas Cotton Bowl, where Elvis appeared in 1955, looks uncertain. Although the City Council are ready to spend $50 million renovating the old Fair Park Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys are moving out to a new stadium in Arlington and any planned renovations may just be too late.

A Guitar For Michiel.

The gesture of ElvisMatters to take the almost-blind boy Michiel Stroobants (17) to Graceland for no cost at all, as the surgeries have cost enough already, hasn’t stayed unnoticed.

Fans from all over Belgium and Holland, have donated money to Michiel. James Burton even donates a guitar to Michiel, which he’ll present on September 30th in Antwerp (Elizabethzaal, ‘ELVIS 2007’).

This news was picked up by the Belgian press, who decided to do a story on this.

ElvisMatters hereby calls on other fanclubs in Belgium and Holland to join forces and participate in this good cause.

It would be great if other clubs would follow this example, and publish the story on their websites too.

TARANTINO AS ELVIS.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment released The Golden Girls: The Complete Fourth Season on DVD.

Some fans may by surprised to see a heart-shaped sticker that adorned the shrink-wrap on series 4, which read "NEW! See Quentin Tarantino As Elvis!"

Until now, this for all we knew was an urban myth, propagated by Tarantino detractors and critics who wanted to show the gregarious filmmaker in the light they felt he deserved - that is, a desperate wannabe who would do anything, including appear on the Fourth Season of Golden Girls as one of ten Elvis impersonators in order to steal some screen time and earn that SAG card.

Having now confirmed that he did appear on the show, for his sake we sincerely hope that his SAG card was gold-plated and framed for future reference; because this is possibly the greatest performance we've ever seen from a featured extra who is trying to do an Elvis impression and yet not completely embarrass himself.

Aloha Elvis By Jerry Hopkins.

This book will be released in early March.

On Elvis' first visit to Hawaii in 1957, fans filled Honolulu Stadium for not one, but two concert performances.

That was the beginning of Elvis' enduring relationship with the islands, which included two additional benefit concerts, three films, and several vacation stays.

For Elvis fans and those interested in Hawaii's music history, Aloha Elvis describes Elvis' love affair with the islands and includes over 100 photographs, some never before published, of Elvis and the people and places he encountered in Hawaii.

About the Author:

Jerry Hopkins, a twenty-year veteran of Rolling Stone, is the author of three other books about Elvis Presley: Elvis: A Biography (1971) and Elvis: The Final Years (1980), both international bestsellers, long out of print and to be republished in an updated form in 2007; and Elvis in Hawaii (2004).

His research material for those works is part of the Mississippi Valley Collection at the University of Memphis in Tennessee. Hopkins also wrote biographies of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Raquel Welch, and Yoko Ono. A resident of Hawaii from 1976-1993, he now lives in Thailand.

Elvis - In The Twilight Of Memory By June Juanico.

In July the book "In The Twilight of Memory" will be re-released by Arcade Publishing:

To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of his death, here is the highly acclaimed, intimate, tender, and deeply moving portrait of Elvis Presley, written by his first serious girlfriend.

June Juanico was 17 when she met Elvis Presley; he was 20. She was a good girl from Biloxi, Mississippi; he was a rockabilly singer on the verge of stardom.

They fell in love in the summer of 1956, and found a timeless moment of innocence and simple pleasure. Juanico gives us the Elvis she knew and loved—the Memphis boy with aw-shucks charm, impeccable manners, and an easy and irresistible sensuality.

Their lives merged quickly and completely: Elvis’s mother, Gladys, felt June was her son’s last hope against the excesses of life on the road and the corruption of fame. But Elvis was on a train that no one could stop. Self-possessed, June chose her own path; she left Elvis, determined never to look back.

But in this completely disarming, fascinating memoir, she does look back, and proves she has remembered everything, every conversation, every story, and every caress. ELVIS IN THE TWILIGHT OF MEMORY gives us an intimate and unforgettable portrait of the man who would be King.

Both a hardcover (ISBN 1559703938, 320 pages) and paperback (ISBN 1559708395, 336 pages) will be released.

Elvis still King Of EBay.

Search for Elvis Presley items on eBay, and you will turn up hundreds — no thousands — of souvenirs, photos, albums, magazine articles, 45s, LPs, CDs, and just about anything and everything someone could slap a TCB logo on.

But occasionally, something very rare and unusual turns up, and that’s just what happened recently when someone decided to sell the rights to Elvis’ last recorded song.

In 1973, the King of Rock and Roll teamed up with songwriter Paul Terry King to produce and record two songs.

One of these, “If I’d Only Bought Her Roses,” was sold last year to Robert X. Sillerman, the current owner of Elvis Presley Enterprises for an undisclosed price.

But the other song, “Just Like Rolling Up the Hill,” has remained a secret until now, when Hill — not in the best of health — decided to sell the rights on eBay. What this means, according to eBay, is that the new owner can “produce, sing, or release it yourself.”

It was promoted on eBay as “Elvis’ Last Recorded Song.”

Sounds like a risky venture, but hey it worked for Elvis, so it might work for the highest bidder, an unidentified (or in eBay’s terms, “private”) buyer who ended up paying $31,101 for the rights.

The winner receives “copyright and all associated publication and performance rights, etc.”

Learn more about this unusual auction at www.elvissong.info.

Worldwide reactions to Graceland visit of almost blind Elvisfan

These past few days, we were almost bombarded with emails and letters from fans, who wish to support Michiel Stroobans (17). Michiel travels with us to Memphis next August.

It’ll be a very special trip for him, as doctors predict that he’ll loose his sight by the end of the year. We already received the first financial support from fans, who wish to give Michiel some pocket money during his stay. Feel free to do so too, although this, of course, is not a necessity.

ElvisMatters has asked other fanclubs too, to support this good cause, so we can all, united in the spirit of Elvis, make this last trip to Graceland an unforgettable experience for Michiel.

Roger Semon talks with EIN about new releases, how he met Ernst Jorgensen, the future of FTD, and more..

Roger Semon, along with Ernst Jorgensen, is the co-producer of everything Elvis at SONY/BMG.

In fact it was the Roger Semon produced 'E.P. Collection' issued in the UK in the early eighties that spearheaded the fabulous re-packaging of Elvis' musical legacy and eventually led to the creation of the FTD fan club label.

Where's The FECC Board?.

Fans are asking the question: what's happened to the popular FECC Messageboard?

( Note: also known as the Gerry Rijff Forum) It has been offline for a number of days.

It appears the moderators are taking a sabbatical following several fierce threads where posters were getting out of hand. No word yet on when it will be back.

Long time patrons of the messageboards will remember when alt.elvis.king board (on Google) reigned supreme.

As it started to degenerate in tone, FECC became the most popular.

Unfortunately the FECC board is increasingly being afflicted with the nastiness too often seen in the alt.elvis.king threads.

KINKADE PAINTING PRICES.

Kinkade painting - NOTE this is NOT the final artwork.

If you have been waiting with baited breath to find out the price of a print of the forthcoming Graceland painting by Thomas Kinkade the wait no more.

The prices are in and once again the powers that be appear to think every fan of Elvis has a wallet so big, you could beat a whale to death with it.

For an unframed print it will cost you around £550.00 ($995.00) or if you can still manage it after all that whale beating, you can buy one in a frame for the inflated price of around £975.00 ($1,680.00).

And don't forget that you can get your print signed by the artist at a special event at Graceland in March for a small additional fee of around £145.00 ($250.00) each person.

Special "If I Can Dream" Video Now on the Official Elvis YouTube Channel.

Just added to Elvis Presley Central, the official Elvis channel on YouTube.com, is the special white suit/black suit If I Can Dream music video.

This video was assembled by taking Elvis's classic live performance of If I Can Dream in the white suit, as chosen for the finale of his 1968 television special, and combining it with components of the two unused lip-synch performances of Elvis in black leather that were shot at the end of his two live "stand-up" shows shot for the special.

This stunning video was put together as a bonus feature for the 2004 release Elvis: '68 Comeback Special - Deluxe Edition DVD.

ELVIS 68 SPECIAL NOVELTY SIGN.

Press Release:

After much anticipation, Bogar Enterprises, LLC announces the release of the ELVIS '68 Comeback Special Novelty Sign in commemoration of one of Las Vegas' most beloved performers -- Elvis Presley.

This novelty sign, which is licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., is a replica of the towering backdrop seen in Elvis' television special, popularly known as "The '68 Comeback Special," that first aired on December 3, 1968 on NBC.

The ELVIS '68 Comeback Special Novelty Sign is sure to become a collector's item for admirers of Elvis Presley and Las Vegas.

The sign features red light emitting diodes (LEDs) that flash the name ELVIS in red lights just like the backdrop seen in the opening and closing segments of the television special. Bogar's replica adds a 43-second sound chip playing one of
Elvis' most recognized tunes, "Don't Be Cruel."

"With the international popularity of Elvis and his association with Las Vegas, it was natural to create a novelty sign that would pay homage to both," said Bob McMonigle, Owner and President of the Las Vegas-based Bogar Enterprises, LLC.
"The '68 Comeback Special is a milestone in Elvis' career as well as one of the greatest moments in rock music history and it deserves to be commemorated."

The ELVIS ’68 Comeback Special Novelty Sign has a suggested retail price of $49.95 and can be purchased in casino gift stores, hotel gift stores, specialty stores and souvenir shops throughout Las Vegas. The novelty sign can also be purchased at Graceland and online at www.LVSignCo.com and in Shop Elvis on www.Elvis.com.

An American Trilogy - Las Vegas Concert Recordings, January/February 1972 Engagement.

This quarter's regular 5” digipack release covers Elvis’ engagement at The Las Vegas Hilton in January-February, 1972.

RCA did not record entire shows, and several of the new songs Elvis had added to his shows were only recorded once. The consequence is that the main body of the CD – the RCA recordings – feature several previously released versions.

Soundboard (informal) recordings of other song performances during the envagement were added to the end of the disc in order to make this as representative as possible of Elvis’ repertoire at that time.

Jumpsuit Expo Opened

After Graceland, the highlight of the next two years will be without any doubt the 'Sincerely Elvis Museum'.

There are not less than 56 jumpsuits on display. Duke, citizen of Memphis and reporter for our collegue's at Elvis Express Radio visted the expo and was overwhelmed.

The suits are placed in a timeline, starting with 1969 and ending with the baby blue suit that Elvis would never where in 1977.

Sources inside EPE confirm that they own 88 jumpsuits: 56 in this expo, 10 in the racquetball building, 3 in the trophy room and 2 in the Afterdark expo.

That means that there are still 17 suits that are left in the vaults.

ELVIS THE CONCERT ON TV.

Imagine if you could still attend a live concert event starring Elvis Presley--a young, vibrant Elvis, in his prime.

Modern technology has made that possible, and PBS will present all the excitement of an Elvis event, beginning in March!

Elvis Presley was larger than life, and the Elvis experience is an amazing phenomenon that has continued to astonish 30 years after his death in 1977. In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his death, Elvis: The 25th Anniversary Concert Event was staged at the Pyramid Coliseum in 2002 in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.

Through the magic of modern technology, Elvis is reunited with his original TCB band, his back-up singers and musical director for a unique concert special, featuring Elvis from Hawaii, in one of the biggest satellite concerts ever, and Las
Vegas, and his supporting musicians and singers live on stage together in Memphis.

This one-of-a-kind sold-out concert event has toured the world, stirring audiences and igniting a passion for the King in a whole new generation of music lovers.

Staged just as if Elvis was appearing live in concert, the limousine arrives at the stage to a thunderous ovation, the lights go down, and suddenly Elvis appears center stage, only this time, it’s on a video screen and the young, vibrant King of Rock ‘n’ Roll appears 20 times larger than life. On stage with him, playing and singing live are his band members and members of the Jordanaires, the Imperials, the Stamps and the Sweet Inspirations, all led by band leader, Joe Guercio.
Performance footage from the live concert is punctuated with interviews with these supporting members.

Joe Moscheo, a member of the Imperials and executive producer of the special, explains that the magic part was in syncing the live with the recorded. “The trick was to isolate the voice so all that was recorded was Elvis’ image and his voice,” he noted. “Some people don’t realize that it’s a live show accompanying Elvis’ voice. What’s especially thrilling about this is that we’re introducing Elvis to a whole new generation of music lovers. This image of Elvis we all have is as a young man, and now he’ll never grow old.”

In cooperation with the Elvis Presley Estate, Coming Home Music has captured all the excitement of that concert in a television special, Elvis Lives, airing exclusively on most PBS member stations nationwide beginning in March. Elvis Lives: The 25th Anniversary Special is available on DVD March 6th.

ElvisMatters Pays Graceland Trip For Almost-Blind Fan.

In the monday edition of the newspaper 'Het Laatste Nieuws' in Belgium, the story of the 17 year old Michiel Stroobans was published. Michiel was born half paralyzed and has a eye-discease.

The nerves in his eye does not get enough blood and oxygene and will stop functioning at some point. It's not possible to threat or heal this problem. In a while, Michiel will be completely blind.

It's the dream of Michiel to see Graceland before he's not able to do it anymore.

After reading this touching article, ElvisMatters contacted the Stroobans family with the news that Michiel and his dad can join the club trip in august without any cost.

Today, this happy news was covered in the newspapers and the national radiostation 'Radio 2' interviewed president Peter Verbruggen about this initiative.

Listen Here.

ElvisMatters is happy that they can go on with the tradition of Elvis who donated a lot for the good cause.

In december, EM donated €1000 for MS-patients and the month before they donated €1000 for poor students.

For this release we decided to focus on the early 1970 Vegas season affording you the possibility to listen to the quality of the performance throughout this season via the two shows presented here.

This Deluxe Digipack import is limited to only 500 copies. The 6 panel packaging will include unreleased Elvis photo’s, the black jumpsuit of the opening night will appear here for the first time, as a bonus three side fold out inlay poster.

The producers are aware of the fact that the opening night show, as one of the best Elvis Presley concerts ever, has been released in parts on two previous imports. Here we give you the chance to listen to the show in its entirety and with professionally remastered sound from the original audio source. The second show, the unreleased February 22nd midnight show, although not new to tape collectors, will not have been heard in this quality before. This release is taken directly from a first generation tape and has been professionally remastered to a high standard producing an excellent audio quality. Elvis is still able to concentrate to the end of the season, delivering a great performance that compares with the opening night in terms of quality.

Excerpt from sleeve notes:

……’Rock In Black’ wants to give you a unique perspective of the man and his music during this February Vegas season. The second season allows Elvis, after paying his debt to the golden past in the ’69 season, to demonstrate his true abilities. We see the best of Elvis in songs that will become the fulcrum of the Elvis show until 1972. Here you can hear the complete remastered and remixed opening night with the almost complete February 22nd show.

If we listen carefully we can see through the music more of the man we all appreciate and how the music develops through hard work during the course of the season. The opening night and throughout this season we can hear………..

ZIPPIN PIPPIN HELD HOSTAGE.

Elvis Presley's favorite roller coaster car is being "held hostage" by fairgrounds officials in Memphis, according to the coaster's owner.

Stephen Shutts, president of Honky Tonk Hall of Fame & Rock-N-Roll Roadshow in Nashville, bought the Zippin Pippin roller coaster last summer for $2,500 in an auction of rides and equipment at the former Libertyland theme park but was only
interested in the first car — Elvis' favorite.

"They keep sending notices telling us that if we don't pick up the car it's going to be declared 'abandoned property.' Then, when we go to get it, they won't let us have it," Shutts said.

He sold the rest of the Zippin Pippin to a North Carolina tourist attraction, Carolina Crossroads, which has yet to move the entire structure.

Mid-South Fair chief operating officer Jim Rout said on Friday he considers Shutts the Zippin Pippin's owner and said when

the coaster is removed, the car will be released.

THE MAN WHO OWNS ELVIS.

Elvis Presley was the king — rock's first icon. A hip-swiveling heartthrob with more hit records than anyone in history. Thirty years after his death, Elvis is still idolized. So what is that name worth now?

To Bob Sillerman, who bought the king's name and likeness, it was worth $114 million. That's what his company, CKX, paid for Elvis Presley enterprises two years ago.

Elvis' music was not part of the deal. he sold most of his hits back to his label before his death. but the family sold 85 percent of everything else and his ex-wife Priscilla Presley says it wasn't an easy decision.

"Absolutely. I mean I'm not gonna lie. It's pretty frightening when, you know, you've been a private company for all these years," she told Sunday Morning correspondent Anthony Mason. "You know and you're the boss."

But Priscilla, the mother of his only child, Lisa Marie, says the family business needed an investor to expand. And Sillerman was just the man to do it.

"He just got it," she said. "You know there is no other company like his company."

His company also owns the "American Idol' franchise, which Sillerman bought for $175 million. Then last year he added "the greatest of all time" to his roster of icons, buying rights to Muhammad Ali's name for another $50 million.

A Bronx born billionaire, Sillerman made his fortune in radio and the concert promotion business. Now he sees Elvis as an under developed asset. On his corporate jet, Mason flew with him to Memphis to tour Graceland, the 13 acre estate where Elvis lived with Priscilla and Lisa Marie. Sillerman said he doesn't feel like he owns Graceland

"It's still their home," he said. "I don't think you can own something that's as big as Elvis Presley. I think I feel a sense of stewardship. But not ownership."

Each year, 600,000 people file through Graceland. Sillerman believes he can double that number

"So many people want to come to Graceland because they want to celebrate his life," Sillerman said. "You know 40 percent of our visitors are unaccompanied kids under the age of 35. It tells you that it does get passed down."

He wants to move the visitor center which sits on the other side of Elvis Presley boulevard and put it next to Graceland. The heartbreak hotel will be torn down to make way for two bigger hotels. In the entire complex that takes up 25 acres will grow to more than 100 acres.

At the same time Sillerman is working with Cirque du Soleil to create a permanent Elvis show for Las Vegas and traveling shows that could tour the world.

"China is so big it could probably support a touring show forever," Sillerman said.

"We're all thrilled about it. We think it's a whole other take on Elvis," Priscilla Presley said. "I think he would absolutely love it."

"If the Cirque du Soleil numbers hold true for Elvis, as they have for every one of their other shows, we're in a position to be making 100 million dollars a year in a few years," Sillerman said. "You know, that's a no-brainer."

Starting with a single small town radio station. Now Sillerman's the man who bought "American Idol," Ali and Elvis.

"Look at what Bobby Sillerman from the Bronx has — God Bless America," Sillerman said.

Hollywood Has Long History Of Prescription Drug Abuse.

If a prescription needs to be filled in Hollywood, chances are celebrities can find a doctor to do it. Doctors have a long history of feeding the drug demands of the entertainment industry from Marilyn Monroe to Winona Ryder, Elvis Presley to Courtney Love.

Now, California authorities are looking at a physician who reportedly prescribed methadone to
Anna Nicole Smith under a fake name. The former Playboy Playmate died Feb. 8 after collapsing at a Florida hotel. The cause is under investigation. The allure of having a star as a patient can sometimes influence whether doctors follow the rules or break the law, one veteran Hollywood publicist says.

"It's not easy to say no to a celebrity," said Michael Levine. "History has taught us whether it's Anna Nicole, Elvis or John Belushi, they can get what they want. It's like water." Monroe died at 36 from an overdose of sleeping pills in August 1962. She had been under a doctor's care at the time, police said.

Presley, who died in 1977 at 42, was known to travel with George Nichopoulos, a former physician who overprescribed drugs to clients, who also included rockabilly singer Jerry Lee Lewis.

Members of the medical team who performed Presley's autopsy acknowledged in 1990 that the singer was addicted to prescription medications and his death may have been hastened by "polypharmacy," a reaction to mixing many drugs. Nichopoulos lost his medical license but was acquitted of related criminal charges.

"Top Gun" producer Don Simpson was found dead of a drug overdose at his Bel-Air estate in January 1996. Traces of 21 drugs were found in his blood, and at least two doctors were investigated for overprescribing medications for Simpson.

More recently, celebrities have used fake names to get their vials filled. A 2002 probation report stemming from the shoplifting arrest of actress Winona Ryder showed that she used a half-dozen aliases when she sought prescription drugs. The report said Ryder went "doctor shopping" and had 37 prescriptions filled by 20 doctors over a three-year span.

"It's not uncommon for a high-profile person to get a prescription filled under an alias," said Ryder's attorney, Mark Geragos, citing a celebrity's need for privacy. "It happens with great frequency."

The California Health and Safety Code includes several sections stating that no person who prescribes or dispenses a controlled substance may give a phony name or address or make any false statements on the prescription form. Geragos said the onus is on the doctor. In Ryder's case, Jules Lusman pleaded no-contest to practicing medicine without a license and grand theft, and was sentenced to five years probation.

This past week, California's medical board opened an inquiry as investigators tried to determine if there was any misconduct by Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who reportedly prescribed methadone to Smith. The celebrity news Web site TMZ.com said "Michelle Chase" was an alias used by Smith in a pharmacy receipt for a methadone prescription. Methadone is a popular narcotic painkiller that is used as part of drug addiction detoxification and maintenance programs. Methadone overdoses can cause shallow breathing and dangerous changes in heart beat.

An attorney for Kapoor, a 1996 graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, said in a statement Friday that his treatment of Smith was "sound and appropriate" and he will cooperate with the state's medical board. Levine said celebrities turn off their "psychological smoke alarms" and surround themselves with people willing to cater to their needs and who aren't willing to intervene when problems arise.

"We hopefully have friends and family who will step in and help us out when there are problems," Levine said. "But people who don't have the smoke alarms will be enveloped by fire at some point."

Elvis statue says Aloha to Hawaii.

A life-size statue of Elvis Presley is to be erected in Hawaii to mark the 30th anniversary of the singer's death.

Wearing his iconic bejewelled jumpsuit, the bronze statue will be placed on the site of Presley's historic 1973 Aloha From Hawaii concert.

"Elvis remains an idol and a hero to so many of us," said Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. "Hawaii considers him an adopted son."

The star died at Graceland on 16 August 1977, aged 42. During his career, he made three films and several concert appearances in Hawaii.

The Aloha gig was the first musical event to be broadcast live around the world on satellite on 14 January 1973.

It was seen in about 40 countries by more than 1bn people, according to the DVD edition of the concert.

"Elvis will forever remain a part of Hawaii's identity," said Mayor Hannemann.

"From his film, Blue Hawaii, to his 1961 benefit performance to raise money for the USS Arizona Memorial to the historic concert which the sculpture commemorates."

The statue will be unveiled in July in front of the Neal Blaisdell Center, formerly the Honolulu International Center Arena, near Waikiki.

Lawsuit Against Elvis Documentary Producers.

ELVIS PRESLEY ENTERPRISES, SOFA ENTERTAINMENT AND LEIBER & STOLLER AWARDED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGES IN COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUIT AGAINST PASSPORT INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS INC. AND DANTE PUGLIESE

LOS ANGELES, CA – February 15, 2007 – In what is considered a significant monetary judgment for copyright infringement lawsuits, the United States District Court in Los Angeles has awarded plaintiffs Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE), SOFA Entertainment, Inc. and songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller $2.8 million in damages and attorneys fees to be paid by Passport International Productions, Inc. (a/k/a Passport Video, Inc.) and its owner, Dante Pugliese.

The case began in 2002 when, without permission and against numerous express objections, Passport manufactured and sold a set of eight DVDs entitled "25th Anniversary Elvis: The Definitive Collection August 16, 1977 - August 16, 2002," otherwise entitled "The Definitive Elvis." The 16-hour set included copyrighted works and the rights of publicity owned by Plaintiffs. In reaching its decision, the Court agreed that Passport released the set with the full knowledge that Plaintiffs did not consent to the unauthorized use of their copyrighted material, and that their activities would mislead consumers and damage Plaintiffs. Passport appealed the case up to the 9th Circuit, claiming "Fair Use," arguing that the set was a documentary look at the life of Elvis Presley. The Court did not agree in a 2005 ruling, and the decision successfully delineated the limits of the Fair Use defense.

“This is a landmark decision for all of us,” stated Gary Hovey, Executive Vice President of Entertainment/Music Publishing for Elvis Presley Enterprises. “We are delighted with the Court’s ruling, the damages awarded and the precedent it sets.”

The copyrighted materials included Presley home movies owned by EPE, material from “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and portions of “Ed Sullivan Rock & Roll Classics – Elvis Presley,” owned by SOFA Entertainment, a producer of movies, videos and television programs. Other unauthorized material was from the EPE owned “The Elvis 1968 Comeback Special (a/k/a "The Singer Special,”) “Aloha From Hawaii,” and “Elvis In Concert,” which also include songs written by Leiber & Stoller.

“It is reassuring to know that the courts have seen fit to uphold our copyrights thereby putting unscrupulous parties on notice that historic performances from ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ cannot be used by those who prefer to steal rather than to license,” commented Andrew Solt of SOFA Entertainment. “We are very pleased with the court’s informed decision.”

“Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller have always supported the ownership and protection of intellectual property,” said Randy Poe, President of Leiber & Stoller Music Publishing. “This ruling puts on notice anyone wishing to improperly claim ‘Fair Use,’ rather than acquiring permission from the copyright owner.”

George R. Hedges of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges, LLP successfully argued the case for the Plaintiffs.

KEOUGH & CABRERA MAKE OUT AT ROCK CLUB - AGAIN.

ELVIS PRESLEY's granddaughter RILEY KEOUGH and pop star RYAN CABRERA went public with their not-so-secret romance again last night (12FEB07) at the same club where they were spotted making out in last year (06).

The hot couple were spotted "going at it" by revellers at Los Angeles Key Club - and this time Keough's mother wasn't there to play chaperone. Tattooed Cabrera posed for his 17-year-old girlfriend as she took goofy snapshots of the singer and then the couple let everyone at the venue know they were very much in love with a very open public display of affection.

One clubber says, "They were all over each other and they really stood out because everyone else in the audience were there just watching METAL SKOOL, the band onstage. "They make a lovely young couple and they even dress the same - they both have that pop grunge look."

The last time the couple was spotted at the weekly club, Keogh brought mum LISA-MARIE PRESLEY and her stepdad MICHAEL LOCKWOOD with her, but last night they hit the scene alone.

I'D BE BIGGER THAN ELVIS.

He has the same amount of charm as a maggot, (actually I have met maggots with more charm) but when asked recently about the possibility of going solo, Noel Gallagher from Oasis said he would not do it because being in a band was"more fun" and he had seen other former members of bands end up as "very lonely boys".

But he left no doubt he felt he would be a great success on his own.

"I could do it easily but if I was a solo artist I would be the biggest solo artist in the country easy, no messing, within a year...seriously... but I prefer being in a band.

But don't ever think that I couldn't do it. I could. I'd be bigger than Elvis. I would."

TV LAND AND THE CITY OF HONOLULU TO HONOR ELVIS PRESLEY WITH LIFE-SIZED SCULPTURE IN JULY, 2007.

NETWORK PRESENTS ON-AIR TRIBUTE THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF AUGUST SHOWCASING FILMS, CONCERTS AND DOCUMENTARIES

NEW YORK, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TV Land will celebrate the life and times of music legend and pop icon Elvis Presley throughout the summer of 2007, it was announced today by Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. Kicking off TV Land's tribute to Elvis in late July, TV Land and the city of Honolulu, Hawaii will honor Elvis with a life-sized bronze sculpture.

The statue will grace The Neal S. Blaisdell Center, formerly The Honolulu International Center, the site of Elvis' 1973 Aloha from Hawaii concert, which was seen globally on television. Fans can log on today at TVLand.com to view video excerpts and photos from Elvis's historic Aloha From Hawaii performance.

Following this momentous event, beginning August 1, 2007, TV Land will celebrate Elvis with an on-air tribute commemorating his unprecedented legacy throughout the entire month. From the '68 Comeback Special to Aloha from Hawaii to the documentary Elvis By The Presleys to his much-loved films like Love Me Tender and Wild in the Country, TVLand will showcase Elvis Presley's work every single day in August.

"Elvis is the ultimate icon of pop culture, especially to the Boomer generation, and one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century," states Larry W. Jones. "Celebrating his legacy this August on TV Land will be a unifying event for current and future Elvis fans."

The "Everything Elvis" tribute encompasses the following: LIFE-SIZED BRONZE SCULPTURE The bronze sculpture, which will be unveiled in late July, will commemorate the historic Aloha from Hawaii event, portraying the King of Rock 'n' Roll as he appeared in that performance, and pay tribute to him during the 30th Anniversary year of his passing. Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. has granted permission for this special tribute and will be involved in the approval process of the sculpture.

"Elvis remains an idol and a hero to so many of us, and because of his time spent here, Hawaii considers him an adopted son," states Mufi Hannemann, Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu.

"Elvis will forever remain a part of Hawaii's identity -- from his film Blue Hawaii to his 1961 benefit performance to raise money for the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial to the historic concert which this sculpture commemorates. Honolulu is proud to be the home to this monument to the King at the very site of one of the most seminal performances in his career."

Aloha from Hawaii, which initially aired on NBC in April of 1973, was the first concert event ever to be beamed around the world by satellite. Carried live in some countries and by tape delay in others, the show was seen in over 40 countries by 1.5 billion people, a worldwide ratings smash.

In America, 51% of the TV viewing households tuned in to watch Elvis perform. The soundtrack album went to Number One on the Billboard album chart and in America alone sales have earned the album a 5x Platinum award. Through the years, video and DVD releases and rebroadcasts have been tremendously successful. The sculpture is the network's sixth work to honor people, places and moments from pop culture by recognizing the site as a "TV Land Landmark."

The network's landmarks include: a bronze statue of Ralph Kramden of The Honeymooners at the entrance of New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal; a sculpture of Mary Tyler Moore from The Mary Tyler Moore Show at Nicollett Mall in downtown Minneapolis, MN; The Andy Griffith Show statue in Raleigh's Pullen Park; a bronze statue of Bob Newhart commemorating his role as Dr. Robert Hartley on The Bob Newhart Show in Chicago and most recently, a tribute to the beloved series Bewitched with a life-size statue depicting a magical view of character Samantha Stevens, played by actress Elizabeth Montgomery, in Salem MA. Fans can visit TV Land.com to see photos, virtual tours of the statues as well as streaming video of some of the dedications.Studio EIS, a three- dimensional design and sculpture studio in New York founded by brothers Ivan and Elliot Schwartz, is creating the life-sized bronze sculpture. LEGENDARY BASSIST BOB MOORE TO BE SALUTED IN FEBRUARY AS NEXT NASHVILLE CAT AT THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s quarterly program series Nashville Cats: A Celebration of Music City Session Players returns on Saturday, February 17, with a salute to legendary bassist Bob Moore. The 2:00 p.m. program, which will be held in the Museum’s Ford Theater, is included with Museum admission and is free to Museum members.

In a career spanning sixty years, Nashville native Bob Moore has played bass on over 17,000 recordings, making him one of the most recorded musicians in history. From the 1950s on, Moore contributed to a host of #1 country hits including Bobby Helms’ “Fraulein,” Marty Robbins’ “El Paso,” Roger Miller’s “King of the Road,” Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and Conway Twitty’s “Hello Darlin’.” Moore also played on classic recordings like Elvis Presley’s “It’s Now or Never” and Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.”

As a member of Nashville’s celebrated “A-Team,” his impeccable meter along with his subtle yet commanding style made Moore’s bass lines the foundation for a myriad of artists recording in Nashville for four decades. Moore’s studio credits span several genres with artists including Julie Andrews, Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Dylan, Connie Francis, Burl Ives, George Jones, Quincy Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Wayne Newton, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Tammy Wynette and many more. Moore even saw success on his own accord with the 1961 instrumental pop hit “Mexico” on Monument Records.

Bob Loyce Moore was born November 30, 1932, in Nashville to humble beginnings. Barely out of diapers, he was drawn to the sounds of his grandmother’s phonograph and broadcasts of the Grand Ole Opry. By age 15 Moore had transitioned from shining shoes outside the Ryman Auditorium to playing bass onstage with country comedians and Opry regulars Jamup & Honey. Soon afterward, Moore landed a prestigious job playing bass for Paul Howard's Arkansas Cotton Pickers, which would help open the door for him to back the likes of Eddy Arnold, Jimmy Dickens, Flatt & Scruggs and Andy Griffith, among others.

By age 20 Moore was playing with Red Foley in Springfield, Missouri, and Marty Robbins in Nashville, Tennessee. Tired of commuting between the two cities, Moore returned in 1954 to Nashville where he became primarily a studio musician. As part of the “A-Team” of virtuosos, Moore helped usher in the lushly orchestrated Nashville Sound, which attracted top artists and producers to Music City.

He worked regularly on sessions with Elvis Presley and, in 1959, he was an early investor in Monument Records, where he served as Roy Orbison’s orchestra leader. Moore was also a sideman for Jerry Lee Lewis from 1983-1985.

Although widely known as a successful country session musician, Moore also performed at the Newport Jazz Festival and recorded with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, experimental rock guitarist Harvey Mandel and premier jazz guitarist Hank Garland, to name a few.

The interactive Nashville Cats programs include in-depth, one-on-one interviews with the players themselves; audio-visual elements, including vintage recordings, photos and film clips culled from the Museum’s Frist Library and Archive; and, in some cases, instrument demonstrations. Visitors will be encouraged to ask questions. Museum Instrument Curator Bill Lloyd hosts the sessions.

Museum memberships ($25/adults and $10/youth) include one year of unlimited admission to the Museum, discounts in the Museum Store, SoBro Grill and Hatch Show Print, and more. Membership support helps fund research, education and public programs that make country music history available to a worldwide audience.

These programs are made possible, in part, by grants from the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission and by an agreement between the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Confessions of EPE CEO.

Jack Soden, CEO, Elvis Presley Enterprises, the business entity created by the estate of Elvis Presley recently said: "We licensed a company that made bedroom slippers.

They were big, furry slippers and they had this rubber image of Elvis' head on the toes.

It was one of those things that when you saw them in the store, it was like, 'What were we thinking?'

We pulled the license and got them off the market as fast as we could."

The Pyramid In Memphis.

It might not have been the arena of our dreams, but it did provide some great nights

It has fascinated and frustrated us, astounded and confounded us, The Pyramid.
No matter how many times we see it, still the urge is to crane our necks, scratch our heads and wonder: What in the name of Ramesses possessed us to build a pyramid, anyway?

But build it we did. We skimped and scrimped -- A tomb with no leg room? An observation deck with no inclinator? -- and still managed to create a sleek, gleaming icon that has, for most of its 15 years, kept us entertained.
So it did again on Saturday night with a farewell concert by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.

Nancy Covington, 49, of Olive Branch was there and said she's seen Travis Tritt, Elton John and even Janet Jackson at The Pyramid.

"It's like a Memphis landmark ," she said. "The FedFexForum doesn't look half as good as The Pyramid."

A 40-something East Memphis resident, Scott Garmon, called the closing a real shame.

"This is a landmark for Memphis. And even though it hasn't been around a long time, when you look up and see that in the skyline, you know you are in Memphis."

A rock and roll finale was fitting, especially by a singer whose songs include, "Turn the Page."

The book on The Pyramid -- a saga of grand visions, squandered opportunity and some matchless nights -- isn't so much closed as it is awaiting a new chapter.

Will it become a giant outdoors store, with a hotel, aquarium and cypress swamp? Or will Bass Pro Shops decide it's a 32-story stretch to bring its bass boats, crossbows and hunting lodge motif to a stainless steel-skinned pyramid.

But those are questions for another day. Today, we look back on a building that's held 1,309 events drawing some 10,119,000 people, a building that's been host to Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, Leonardo da Vinci's "tousle-haired lady," the Lipizzaner Stallions, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Mankind and the Rock, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, monster trucks, and the Bolshoi Ballet.

After that last act brought high culture to our $65 million gymnasium, this newspaper's critic sniffed, "The Pyramid did what it could to accommodate a theatrical event ... But it still felt like watching fine art in a sports arena, particularly when some folks clomped up past me with their snacks and drinks."

The Pyramid, of course, was good for more than one-night stands. It was the home of our first major league franchise (the NBA's Grizzlies), our beloved college heroes (the University of Memphis Tigers) and, for a while, an indoor football team (the Pharaohs, who may have played fake football but trod out real camels, Tut and Cleo, by name).

"I'm filled with memories of The Pyramid," said fashion designer Pat Kerr Tigrett, whose late husband, entrepreneur and financier John Tigrett, championed the city-county project and was considered its father. "It gave John such incredible joy and me such incredible joy. It's always been a pleasure and a treasure."

And suddenly she's off reminiscing, about Tiger basketball, concerts, her own Blues Ball extravaganza, and palling around with artist LeRoy Neiman when the Tyson-Lennox Lewis heavyweight championship fight hit town in 2002.

Ah, the fight. "The Slaughter on the Water," to recall a catchphrase that somehow didn't catch on. "The Bloody on the Muddy," to quote another. It may have been the building's finest moment, a too-hot-for-Vegas bout that had the world craning to look in on li'l ol' Memphis and its Pyramid. Denzel Washington showed up to watch. So did Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J, Wesley Snipes, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio.

"It's funny," then-general manager Alan Freeman said when the fight was announced. "Slightly more than a year ago we were trying to secure an East Coast Hockey League franchise.

"Now, we've got an NBA team here in the Grizzlies, and today we got arguably one of the top five sporting events of the year."

The Grizzlies held court for three seasons in The Pyramid, a shacking-up, as it were, while grander digs were being built over by Beale Street. But some fans may look back fondly: Where else in the NBA could you buy a lower-bowl ticket for $25? "And," as Tigrett said, "certainly the Grizzlies would not have come to town if it wasn't for The Pyramid."

True enough. It took the promise of a new arena (the tricked-out but mundanely shaped FedExForum) to land the Grizzlies in 2001, but they wouldn't have relocated without a suitable temporary home.

Good, but not good enough -- maybe that's the legacy of The Pyramid.

But once upon a time, you know, it was going to be great -- the Great American Pyramid, as imagined by the late Sidney Shlenker.

"It's going to be a monument like the Statue of Liberty or the Eiffel Tower, a signature for the city," he said in a 1989 New York Times story headlined, "Era of Great Pyramid Is Just Dawning in Memphis."

"The difference is," he continued, "this will have something to do inside it."

Ah, Sidney Shlenker. The Chicago Tribune described him that same year as a "burly, bright-eyed, gap-toothed millionaire" who "swashbuckled into town with dreams of turning Memphis into the South's biggest tourist Mecca since Mickey Mouse migrated to an Orlando swamp." Alas, Shlenker couldn't deliver and was ousted.

"You know, it never hurts to dream big," said the building's former office manager and booking coordinator Terri Knight, who watched The Pyramid come out of the ground and zealously protects its image in a way a mother might admire and even Mike Tyson might not cross. "But look at what we got. I'm pretty pleased with what we got."

But there would be no Hard Rock Cafe, no inclinator to the observation deck, no simulator ride "through the Egyptian Netherworld."

We may have been taken for a ride, but to a less grandiose end: The Pyramid -- so striking outside, so spare inside -- opened Nov. 9, 1991.

The Judds sang. Restrooms flooded.

"Pyramid visitors gush; so do drains," read the next day's headline.

Fifteen years and a couple of months later, our view of The Pyramid seems, as ever, mixed.

-- David Williams: 529-2310

Reporter Trey Heath contributed to this story.

THE PYRAMID YEARS.

A selective history of the $65 million arena:

1989: City celebrates groundbreaking with "The Big Dig," complete with lasers and fireworks.

1991: Building opens as the Judds perform and restrooms flood.

1994: Southeastern Conference basketball tournament packs 'em in: 195,942 fans for 11 games, at the time the second-largest attendance in league history. The tournament returns in 1997.

2001: NBA's Grizzlies arrive for the first of three seasons in their temporary home while FedExForum is constructed.

2002: In perhaps the biggest sporting event ever staged in Memphis, heavyweight boxing champ Lennox Lewis whips Mike Tyson.

2004: Grizzlies and University of Memphis basketball, and other arena events, depart as FedExForum opens. Pyramid redevelopment process begins.

2006: Bass Pro Shops announces plans to redevelop building as an outdoors mega-store.

2007: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band perform in what's billed as the building's farewell concert.

Bass Pro not yet reeled in

City chief financial officer Robert Lipscomb said he has an agreement in principle and is "real close" to a binding contract with Bass Pro Shops to redevelop The Pyramid.

The company announced plans for an outdoors mega-store nearly a year ago, but progress toward a development agreement has been slow.

The company has said little about its plans since the announcement, but company president Jim Hagale was expected to attend Saturday night's Bob Seger concert in Mayor Willie Herenton's Pyramid suite.

Bass Pro's recent plans have included spending more than $100 million and constructing a 150,000-square-foot store, three restaurants, a multi-level aquarium and museum, and seven-story hotel.

"Personally, I'm looking forward to it and hope it happens," said Pierre Landaiche, general manager of the nearby Cook Convention Center. "When Bass Pro comes to a city, within a short period of time, it becomes one of the top tourist attractions in the state."

THE NEW DVD BY STAR "HOLLYWOOD ELVIS" VOLUME 4 - OUT NOW!

Watch The Trailer: Hollywood Elvis Vol.4

This series does not need introduction, again STAR deliveres an incredible dvd, with 35 newly re-edited clips, like the first 3 volumes, all the clips are made in a less “movie” way, and the accent is on the performance of Elvis; the reason why we are fans!

Movies included this time are:

THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS, FLAMING STAR, IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLDS FAIR and EASY COME, EASY GO.

Not only all the songs from the movies are included, but again there are lots of bonusses to make it even more fun:

U.S. MALE – close up footage of Elvis from the movie The Trouble With Girls, a very funny clip!

BRITCHES, we see “a gail in britches” and Elvis on horse, where it SHOULD have been in the movie, but was deleted. Also from Flaming Star : BLACK STAR , The movie version of SUMMER KISSES, and the END TITLE version of FLAMING STAR.

WHAT NOW WHAT NEXT WHERE TO, still pictures from It Happened At The Worlds Fair, this clips tries to tell that Elvis has lost grip on the movies, and does not know “WHAT NEXT”.. he dreamed about movie contracts, but they were very dissapointing to him (“You were part, of every dream i dreamed... how could i know our castles were build upon the sand....”)

GONNA GET BACK HOME SOMEHOW Behind the scenes footage of Elvis on the set.

I GOTTA KNOW – rare pictures of Elvis during Flaming Star.

Make sure you get the “REAL thing” with the REAL cover, made with love “By fans, for fans”. Don’t support the ones, made only for the money.

Grid Iron Blocker Friend To Elvis.

Old-time Cleveland Browns fans will remember Gene Hickerson as the lead blocker for the great Jim Brown and two other Browns' NFL Hall of Fame backs, Leroy Kelly and Bobby Mitchell.

As for this scribe, one of the new Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees is not only remembered as one of the fastest and mobile linemen to ever play the game, perhaps the Browns' best-ever offensive lineman, but the former Ole Miss star generates several memories beyond the football field.

Hickerson was born just a few miles from Milan, Tenn., my hometown. His family moved around several times in the area. He had a younger brother, Willie, who also became a standout lineman at Ole Miss and he had an older brother, Marshall, whose talent was tossing 100-pound sacks of livestock feed around with ease at my father's milling company in Milan. Unfortunately, Marshall died of a heart attack after he turned down a heart transplant.

Gene had a brother, Oliver, who lived in Whitehaven, a suburb of Memphis, and was a neighbor of Elvis Presley. Gene met Elvis and they were close friends right up to Presley's tragic death in 1977 at his Graceland mansion.

Gene and Elvis often motored around Memphis in one of "The King's" Cadillacs. My father once told me a story about a Gene and Elvis episode at a gas station in Memphis. Elvis pulled into the station and told a young attendant, "Fill 'er up."

After the attendant was finished cleaning the windsheld and Elvis was prepared to pay him, there was no reaction from the attendant who had no idea who he was servicing.

"Don't you know who I am?" Elvis said.

"Nope," said the attendant.

"Well," Elvis said, "here's a $100 bill. My name is Elvis Presley and don't you forget it."

Needless to say, the attendant was stunned and just stood there, mouth open, as the Cadillac pulled away.

Elvis Party At The US Embassy In Demark.

(Picture: James P. Cain & Henrik Knudsen)
(Picture by: Ole Jakobsen / Den Utraditionelle)

Elvis Unlimited had the honour of producing an Elvis party last night (Thursday) at the American ambassador in Denmark’s mansion in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The ambassador Mr. James P. Cain has been in Denmark since august 2005 and he is working hard on maintaining the good Danish- American relationship. He has been touring Denmark for some time to meet the people and take care of his business. He even visited the Elvis Unlimited Museum and shop in Randers, Denmark last year.

For a few months the staff at EU and the staff of Mr. Cain’s been working on this party were 12 different Elvises were invited. Performing on stage was Henrik Busborg who recently won the Danish Elvis championship.

The ambassador had invited various Danish politicians, business relations, actors, musicians and other celebrities. A total of 350 guests attended the party.

Beside all the Elvises Elvis Unlimited had displayed some original clothing and a guitar from Elvis. Mr. Cain himself displayed his own treasure. Being an old magazine signed by no less than the four Beatles members, Jim Morrison and last but not least the king Elvis Presley himself.

The whole party was meant to be a relaxed and fun event. Mr. Cain, his wife Helen and their staff did everything they could to make it fun and they succeeded. In the middle of the party the ambassador even dressed up in an Elvis gold suit for a short while.

Nearly all the Danish media has been covering this event on TV, in newspapers and in magazines.

Monty Python's Eric Idle: "Elvis saved my life."

There's a Q&A interview with Eric Idle of Monty Python fame in the Playbook section of The Commercial Appeal in Memphis today. Spamalot, a stage musical inspired by one of the films of the Monty Python comedy troupe and created by Idle, has a Memphis engagement. The last Q&A item is reprinted below.

In all the years that Elvis's having been a Monty Python fan has been talked about, it's a wonder those guys hadn't heard about it. Idle's comments about his reaction to having only recently learned that Elvis was a fan - what beautiful thing to say.

Q: If you had realized that Python would become the legend it is, is there anything you might have done differently during your heyday?

A: Well, I would have tried to meet Elvis because he loved Python. I met Linda Thompson (Elvis' former girlfriend) the other day and she said that Elvis knew all the Python sketches. He would watch all-night Python. He would learn and recite them. Took the tapes on his plane. He would call people Squire from the "Nudge Nudge" sketch.

I said to Linda, "What? You're kidding!" She said, "No, we'd be up all night. He'd make me learn these things and we'd laugh and laugh and laugh." And I just felt so happy. I mean, I knew we had the Beatles but Elvis as well! You know, Elvis saved my life when I was 13 or 14. He saved all our lives."

Burtons To Give 20 Guitars To Shriners Hospital.

With tears and laughter, patients and parents at Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport received 20 acoustic guitars Thursday from legendary rock guitarist James Burton.

With hospital administrators, some of his relatives and members of the James Burton Foundation, Burton gave the gift of music to the orthopedic hospital that is the flagship of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The gift is a continuation of presentations of guitars that have put at least 600 instruments in the hands of Caddo students so far.

“This is something that’s going to be here forever,” said Burton, a guitarist since the 1950s and someone whose name can be mentioned in the same breath as the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richard and the Who’s Pete Townsend. “And when I’m gone, these young kids are going to carry on my legacy in music.”

Burton said the gift to a hospital that treats children is more than appropriate.

“Even though a child can’t play an instrument, it’s something they love,” said Burton, who just returned from Austria to take part in the culmination of the project begun with the hospital months ago by his wife, Louise, and son Jeff. “When they hear music, it does something to the mind and the body. It’s great therapy.”

Jeff Burton said neither the work of his father’s foundation or that of the Shriners Hospital would be possible without the support of the community, which could do more if people offered the cost of the night out on the town, even once, to nonprofits trying to accomplish good.

“We think every child should have the opportunity to have an instrument,” he said, adding that Thursday’s move was just a first step. “We want to move outside Shreveport and work with Shriners across the United States. That’s our next goal.”

Hospital administrator Kim Green was pleased with the day’s events. “As a struggling guitarist myself, I’m very excited about having the opportunity for the children here to be participants in music therapy and have the enjoyment and excitement that all of us get from participating in playing and enjoying music.”

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover had planned to attend. In fact, the presentation was scheduled to accommodate his schedule. But a last-minute meeting prevented him from attending. He was represented by spokeswoman Gwen Campbell and by Arlena Acree, a former mayoral opponent and now head of the city’s film office.

At least one young patient from Honduras was starry-eyed at holding a guitar autographed by Burton and to fret chords with him standing over her shoulder.
“I would really like to learn a song from Mr. James,” said 14-year-old fan Roxanne Gonzales, who has been visiting the hospital annually for surgeries on and braces for her legs since 1996.

Gonzales and her mom, Fatima Gonzales, both familiar with Burton through his work with the late Elvis Presley, appreciated the gift of the music. Roxanne Gonzales has played guitar the past four years and plans to continue, though performing on stage isn’t her dream.

“I would like to become a doctor and to work here,” the teen said, her serious, thoughtful face occasionally radiated by smiles. “The Shriners do a great job here, and I would like to someday help continue it.”

James Burton was touched by her wish for a lesson and said he likely would return to the hospital when the youngsters have had an opportunity to learn to play a bit. “We’ll play a little bit and have them play for us.”

Elvis Jumpsuits: All Access Will Officially Open In Early March.

Angie from the Graceland Archives says:

"We've spent nearly a year now in planning and research for the design of the exhibit, but the installation date is almost here. Just a few last minute lists to go over to make sure we have everything we need to make this happen. The most difficult task is behind us.

We pre-dressed ALL 58 mannequins for a photo shoot a few weeks ago. We'll soon be posting some of the photos for Insiders. The photos are going to be used in our very first exhibit catalog that will be available to purchase in March. It was an amazing site seeing all of these performance costumes in one room.

We have all gotten really good at dressing Elvis. In fact, we can now dress a mannequin in about 10 minutes.
Jerry Schilling said that is faster then Elvis could have dressed himself for a concert. We are all feeling so proud. This exhibit has been so much fun and such an honor to put together. I can't wait for the installation to see all of these elements
finally come together".

Amy from the graphic design team says:

"The new jumpsuit exhibit has been an exciting project to work on. I helped set up for the photo shoot and some of the costumes that will be on display, I had never seen before.

To be so close to the costumes and see the detail and workmanship that went into these suits was just amazing. As we were developing the exhibit logo I wanted it to reflect the strong colors and impact of the jumpsuit designs, as well as represent
the era when Elvis wore them on stage. I know all of you are going to love this exhibit.

We are starting to layout the exhibit catalog and choosing which jumpsuit photos and which photos of Elvis we will be using. As soon as we have some mock ups of the inside, we'll post them here. For now, here is the very first look at the official
logo for the exhibit!"

Graceland Celebrates Soul.

Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. proudly joins in as Memphis Celebrates 50 Years of Soul, a milestone in the history of our city's rich musical legacy and its global influence.

With tremendous gratitude and abiding respect we salute all the gifted songwriters, singers, musicians, producers and business leaders who made soul music happen in a big way in Memphis and took that groove out to the world.

In exhibits at Graceland are gold records, artifacts and other items related to Elvis’s Stax recording sessions.

The "Elvis After Dark" exhibit includes original acetates from a couple of his sessions, his Fender Jazz bass and more.

Elvis at Stax Recording Studio

Elvis's series of recording sessions at Stax in July and December of 1973 came on the heels of the triumph of his global television special Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii earlier that year.

The Stax sessions produced a collection of R&B, pop, rock, country and gospel material that comprised a special chapter in Elvis's recording catalog.

Elvis called upon the talents of some of his usual stage and studio collaborators and some Stax regulars.

The albums Good Times, Raised on Rock and Promised Land and several singles emerged from these sessions.

Standout tracks include It's Midnight, I Got a Feelin' in My Body, If You Talk in Your Sleep, Help Me, My Boy and a splendid rocking cover of the Chuck Berry classic Promised Land.

Later compilations containing some of Elvis's Stax recordings are Rhythm and Country and, on the Follow That Dream collectors label, Made in Memphis.

'CRAWFISH' BY ELVIS FEATURED IN NEW MOVIE.

Details have surfaced regarding the soundtrack to The Future is Unwritten, the new documentary about the late, great Joe Strummer.

According to Billboard, the packed soundtrack features a previously unreleased live version of the Clash's "I'm So Bored With the U.S.A." alongside tracks from Elvis Presley, the MC5, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Nina Simone.

"The Future Is Unwritten," which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was assembled using a combination of old interviews collected from journalists as well as tapes of Strummer's BBC radio show.

It features testimonials from members of the Clash as well Bono, Johnny Depp, Martin Scorsese, Courtney Love, Flea and John Cusack among many others.

The film was produced by documentary filmmaker Julien Temple, who was responsible for the definitive Sex Pistols documentary The Filth and the Fury as well as the infamous mockumentary The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

Though Strummer tragically passed away in 2002, Temple had already shot many hours of footage to be used in the film.

Among songs from the 101'ers and Mescaleros the soundtrack includes the song "(In The) Pouring Rain" credited to Clash II.

This was one of the unreleased songs played on tour during the band's Cut The Crap era. It is notable that the band is credited as "Clash II" and not simply "The Clash."

While fans often deride the post-Combat Rock period and official band histories tend to ignore it, this may be the first time the Clash II moniker has been used on a non-bootleg recording.

The tracks are:

"White Riot" - the Clash
"Rock the Casbah" - Racid Taha
"Crawfish" - Elvis Presley
"Black Sheep Boy" - Tim Hardin
"Kick Out the Jams" - MC5
"Keys to Your Heart" - the 101'ers
"I'm So Bored With the U.S.A." - the Clash
"Natty Rebel (2006 mix)" - U-Roy
"Armagideon Time" - the Clash
"Nervous Breakdown" - Eddie Cochran
"(In the) Pouring Rain" - Clash II
"Filibustero" - Joe Strummer
"Martha Cecilia" - Andres Landeros
"Minuet" - Ernest Ranglin
"Trash City" - Latino Rockabilly War
"Rangers Command" - Woody Guthrie
"Corrina, Corrina" - Bob Dylan
"Johnny Appleseed" - Joe Strummer
"To Love Somebody" - Nina Simone
"Willesden To Cricklewood" - Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros

Essential Elvis? Here it is ‘Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis’ isn’t a CD but a book of candid photos of Presley on the cusp of fame in 1956.

Photo: 'Hound Dog' day(Alfred Wertheimer)

The latest album in RCA's endless Elvis Presley's CD reissue series may have "essential" in the title, but don't believe it. RCA has called nearly a dozen earlier albums or boxed sets "essential," and few have lived up to the claim.

However, there is one Presley-related item that deserves that description: "Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis," a book of exquisite Presley photos taken in 1956 by Alfred Wertheimer

These are remarkably intimate and revealing portraits, mostly shot "fly-on-the-wall" fashion as Wertheimer followed Presley in the recording studio, on a train ride, to a coffee shop lunch counter and at home in Memphis, Tenn., with his parents and friends.

Presley fans have marveled for years at some of the photos, more than 100 of which were featured in "Elvis '56," a large-format paperback published in 1979 by Collier Books.

Now, Insight Editions not only adds some 200 more photos from the period to the mix, but also displays them in a gorgeous 11-by-14-inch hardback edition.

One thing that makes the black-and-white photos so striking is that we rarely saw Presley in such candid fashion after 1956 because the singer's manager, Col. Tom Parker, valued mystique in his marketing. He not only kept Elvis away from photographers, but also from most journalists.

Other photographers got access to Presley in 1956, but usually in formal sessions where things seemed posed. The wonder of Wertheimer's work is that virtually every shot of Presley seemed as informal as a home movie, whether the 21-year-old was reading a Betty and Veronica comic book, combing his hair in front of a mirror or French-kissing (!) his date backstage.

Adding to the lure of the photos is that Presley was still in the infancy of fame, and Wertheimer's photos captured his fascinating blend of innocence and raw charisma. In its way, it's as compelling a portrait of a rock immortal as "Don't Look Back," D. A. Pennebaker's 1967 film documentary of Bob Dylan on tour in England.

"Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis"(Insight Editions)

The back story: Wertheimer, a young New York freelance photographer, was excited to get a call from an RCA Records publicist asking if he could shoot Presley's performance on Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's weekly TV show in March 1956. The reason for Wertheimer's excitement: Tommy Dorsey was one of his heroes.

Like most Americans, he had never heard of the young rock 'n' roll singer whose first RCA recording, "Heartbreak Hotel," was just climbing the charts.

"Elvis was the perfect subject," Wertheimer told me when "Elvis '56" was published. "He was never temperamental or shied away from the camera.

"Elvis was in total control when he stepped onstage, but offstage in those days he was just like anybody else. He knew something was happening, but he was still shy and unassuming. He was just starting to gain a sense of his own stardom."

In that spirit, Presley let Wertheimer follow him back to his hotel after rehearsal and photograph him while he read fan mail and got ready for the evening's performance.

Through it all, Wertheimer was apparently so unobtrusive that Presley never seemed self-conscious. The photos, including ones of the actual TV show performance, are splendid.

Several months later, Wertheimer got even more access to Presley during an appearance on Steve Allen's TV show, shooting Elvis sitting alone at the piano in a rehearsal room and going over his lines with Allen and fellow guests Imogene Coca and Andy Griffith.

Things got even better as Wertheimer followed Presley to Richmond, Va., for a concert and some downtime. Backstage, Wertheimer somehow managed to snap lots of shots of Presley and his date snuggling, without breaking the mood.

In Memphis, Wertheimer joined Presley on a motorcycle ride, stepped into the pool with him while the singer horsed around with some friends, and then captured the awestruck expressions of Memphis fans watching their hero onstage. Every page is a gem.

Further study: If you really want the essential Presley records, you're going to have to get at least two albums, probably three. The new, two-disc "The Essential Elvis Presley" can't be considered definitive if it omits such basic tracks as "One Night," "How Great Thou Art" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky."

For the budget-minded collector, start with "Elvis at Sun," a 19-song CD on RCA that includes the landmark material Presley recorded at Sun Records before "Heartbreak Hotel." Then pick up "Elvis: 30 No. 1 Hits," another single-disc album on RCA that will take you from "Heartbreak Hotel" to "Way Down." Approximate cost for the pair: $30. If you are willing to go an additional $15, add "Elvis/Ultimate Gospel" on RCA to hear Presley singing the music that was probably closest to his heart.

The serious collector should get three boxed sets on RCA. They'll give you more than you need, but you'll have virtually everything you want, including some concert recordings. Each set contains five discs and focuses on a single decade: "Elvis/The King of Rock 'n' Roll: The Complete '50s Masters," "Elvis/From Nashville to Memphis: The Essential '60s Masters I" and "Elvis/Walk a Mile in My Shoes: The Essential '70s Masters." Approximate cost: $175.

For the movie tunes, which take you into an uneven chapter in the singer's career, you'll need the two-disc "Elvis/Command Performances: The Essential '60s Masters II" (about $30). Add the gospel package and you're still under $225.

Some News From Sony Bmg(uk) On Elvis Releases 2007.

According to Sony BMG(UK) a decision on the new releases for this year will be made within the month.

Apparently a number of Projects are being looked at and although I know nothing of them, it would appear that one or two of the ideas, if they come off, will be given as big a push as the 30 No.1's release.

Again, it looks as though a Greatest Hits package is not in the reckoning.

I will let you know anything as soon as I can get it.

The Ultimate Performance is a new stage production in the U.K. that looks to be a great tribute to Elvis Presley.

Details:

The concept behind ELVIS – the Ultimate Performance came about when Brian Hill, Director of Barisons Management was asked by the producer of Europe’s largest Elvis Presley contest and convention, the ‘Walk A Golden Mile In My Shoes’, if he could write a theatre style show and arrange the orchestration to headline this world famous annual Elvis event.

Brian wanted to stay away from the typical Elvis Presley tributes and impersonators and offer the Elvis world something that is dedicated to the life of the greatest performer the world has ever seen.

With the respect that is deserved and commanded by Elvis Presley Enterprise, Brian Hill wrote this theatre show for those and only those that respect the name Elvis Presley.

When you see ELVIS – the Ultimate Performance you will understand more about the person and more about his music than any other show currently performing.

With informative narration running through the performance, ELVIS – the Ultimate Performance will bring new light to two of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll televised broadcasts that the industry has witnessed.

Both original broadcasts set new records and both featured the KING at his very best.

The 68 Comeback Special showed that Elvis was hear to stay and the 1973 Aloha from Hawaii touched the hearts of all Elvis fans world wide.

In ELVIS – the Ultimate Performance we hope to touch as many hearts with the memory of Elvis Presley.

Elvis Presley's Legacy Is Muddled.

Elvis Presley's legacy is muddled says Pete Townshend of The Who Pete Townshend says that the true power of Elvis Presley's early work overshadows the myth that has built up in the 30 years since his death. The Who have been performing Townshend's personal tribute to Presley, called "Real Good Looking Boy," on their recent tour, despite the fact that Presley was never a major influence on Townshend growing up. He explained to Goldmine that, "He is not as important to me as some other late 1950s artists, but Elvis was the first truly beautiful man, rather than rugged handsome man, that young men like me, and Roger (Daltrey), felt safe to adore."

Townshend added that when Presley became an actor and a global superstar, it came close to ruining him as an artist: "His legacy is muddled. We have to focus on (his) early work, and just one or two of his movies, and elements of his TV shows, to keep his memory pure. People now know that Elvis could play a mean rhythm guitar himself, and needed no other musicians to perform a great song. But Elvis was not just a rock star, he was an all-round entertainer. He flew on our adoration for the last 10 years of his life and he is probably still flying on it now."

We spoke to Townshend while he was in the States during the Who's last set of dates. Townshend said that he viewed Presley's movie years as a wasted opportunity: "I was watching the TV yesterday, and Blue Hawaii was on. I just thought, 'What was Elvis doing?!' You know, the Beatles were about to appear, Ricky Nelson was putting out 'Hello, Mary Lou,' the Everly Brothers were doing 'Cathy's Clown' -- the most unbelievably brilliant music! Dion was doing great stuff. It was the most fantastic records being made! (Elvis was) dressing up in Hawaiian shirts, playing the ukulele and getting married on a raft."

"Real Good Looking Boy" includes passages from Presley's 1962 Top Two hit "Can't Help Falling In Love." It was originally released on the band's compilation The Who: Then And Now - 1964-2004, and was the band's first original studio track in 15 years. In October, the Who released their first new album since 1982, the critically acclaimed Top Ten hit, Endless Wire. Townshend has just released a new solo compilation titled Definitive Collection, featuring such favorites as "Let My Love Open The Door," "Rough Boys," "Slit Skirts," "Give Blood," and others.

Pete Townshend will next perform on February 20th with his girlfriend Rachel Fuller, and other yet-to-be-named guest artists, at Joe's Pub in New York City. The Who kick off their next series of dates on February 23rd in Reno, Nevada at the Reno Events Center.

'Italian Elvis Series' Shows Surrealistic Elvis Art.

The surrealistic work from artist Frank D. Mayes III is on exhibition in Georgia, USA.

The controversial pieces are made from well known religious pieces that are modified to modern scenes.

The 4-panel 'Birth, Life and Crucifixion' is painted on a wooden panel, 7x7 feet, and has a link to paintings of Jesus Christ.

In the top panel, Elvis is looking down on his life, on the right his birthouse in Tupelo, on the left Las Vegas (where he still lives further in the way of impersonators), it seems to be that the 3 crucified men can be compared to the authors of the book 'Elvis: What Happened'

Elvis' Family Heritage.

Elvis' father Vernon Elvis Presley was born on April 10, 1916 in Fulton, Mississippi. Vernon's parents were Jessie D. McClowell Presley (1896 - 1973) and Minnie Mae Hood Presley (1893 - 1980). Jessie was a farmer and was said to have been a good looking man. Minnie Mae has been described by her family as skinny, peppy and a hard worker.

Elvis' mother Gladys Love Smith was born on April 25, 1912 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Gladys' parents were Robert Lee Smith and Octavia Luvenia "Doll" Mansell. Octavia was said to have received her nickname "Doll" because she was a very beautiful and fragile woman. She gave birth to nine children and was bedridden most of her life, dying at the age of 59 from tuberculosis.

Gladys' father Robert was a handsome man with black hair. He was a cotton farmer and an occasional moonshiner. He would often pick up extra jobs to help support his large family. In his fifties, he died suddenly of pneumonia, leaving the then 19-year-old Gladys to find work in Tupelo as a seamstress to help support the family.Gladys had black hair and dark eyes.

As a youth she liked to play basketball. She played the position of forward and was very good at it. She also loved music and dancing. Vernon was tall and fair haired. He, too, liked music and had a good singing voice. He also enjoyed working on cars. In Tupelo, Mississippi they met and fell in love. They eloped on June 17, 1933 and were married in Ponotoc County.

Their son Elvis, destined for fame, and his stillborn twin Jessie were born January 8, 1935 in their small home in Tupelo.Various authors have researched Elvis' genealogy to varying degrees of accuracy.

Although an official genealogy has not yet been completed by Graceland Archives, there is evidence that Elvis' ancestory is from several countries. His heritage includes Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish, French, Dutch, German and Cherokee ancestory. (News, Source: The Kings Corner

The sixth release from the “SR” label scheduled for an early February release is entitled ‘Rock In Black’ and will feature both the complete January 26th 1970 Las Vegas opening show and the complete February 22nd midnight show from the showroom. As with the other SR releases we get something new and a little different.

WATCH THE NEW TRAILER FROM THE NEW DVD BY STAR "HOLLYWOOD ELVIS" VOLUME 4.

Watch The Trailer: Hollywood Elvis Vol.4

COMING THIS FEBRUARY:

Singer-actress Barbara McNair dies at 72.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer and actress Barbara McNair, who starred opposite Elvis Presley and Sidney Poitier and became one of the first black women to host her own television variety show, has died at 72, her husband said on Monday.

McNair died on Sunday after a long battle with throat cancer, husband Charles Blecka told Reuters. McNair, who started singing in church as a girl, was still performing as recently as late last year.

"She was the strongest person I knew," Blecka said. "She was powerful in a strong way. If she set her sights to do something, she did it and did it in a dignified way."

McNair broke into show business as a nightclub singer and had nearly a two-decade recording career but she parlayed her early fame into a series of TV appearances and ultimately became better known as an actress.

After making her feature film debut in the 1968 crime drama "If He Hollers Let Him Go," she went on to star along with Mary Tyler Moore and Jane Elliott opposite Presley in his last movie, 1969's "Change of Habit." McNair, Moore and Elliott all played nuns and Presley portrayed a doctor.

McNair may have been best known in movies for her role as Poitier's wife in the 1970 classic "They Call Me Mister Tibbs!" and its 1971 sequel "The Organization."

She hosted a syndicated musical variety series, "The Barbara McNair Show" in 1969 when few black women were given such opportunities. Entertainers who appeared on the show during its brief run included Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher and Bob Hope.

"A lot of people think celebrity comes with a burden," said Blecka, who also served as McNair's manager. "Barbara never did. Along with her inner strength she had this ability to just accept everybody, in all walks of life. Ask anybody in the business, she was one of the most wonderful people you'd ever want to come across."

McNair also appeared on Broadway in productions of "The Body Beautiful," "No Strings" and "The Pajama Game."

Acting roles dwindled for McNair in the 1970s and '80s but she continued to sing at nightclubs and cabarets and made occasional TV appearances on shows such as "The Jeffersons" and the "Redd Foxx Show."

Celebrity Secrets: Government Files Of The Rich And Famous Reveals Army Secret.

In the new book 'Celebrity Secrets: Government Files of the Rich and Famous', a lot of unknown secrets about celebrities are unvealed with the help of official records.

Offcourse, it's not possible to publish such a book without a story of Elvis.

The supposed story goes like this; Elvis asked the army top in 1959 to dismiss a south-african homosexual from the army after giving dermatological treatments.

The man blackmailed Elvis with the fact that he would release compromising pictures if he did not pay $450 and a plane ticket to London.

BBC Push Shows Little Aeward.

The BBC’s high-profile marketing drive for its radio stations has produced only modest results, according to the latest Rajar figures.

The corporation launched several television campaigns to promote its stations and individual DJs last year, most notably the Radio 2 TV spot (pictured) which showed Elvis Presley on stage with famous musicians including Noel Gallagher and the Sugababes.

However, Rajar figures that cover the three months to 17 December 2006 showed that the total number of listeners for the main national stations fell slightly, to 28.71 million.

Only an increase in BBC local stations managed to push the corporation into a healthier position that last time around, with an overall rise of around 150,000 listeners to 32.81 million.

In the battle against commercial radio, the BBC achieved a 55.4 per cent market share, a rise of just 0.1 per cent.

Radio 1 shed 300,000 listeners over the quarter, falling to 10.26 million. The station is down by 30,000 listeners on the same period last year.

Radio 2, boosted by the Elvis campaign, added 500,000 listeners over the three months, rising to 13.26 million. However, the station has only regained listeners lost throughout 2006.

Five Live, boosted by cricket coverage and a competitive Premiership football title race, gained 40,000 listeners over the quarter and is nearly 200,000 listeners better off compared with the same period in 2006.

A senior source at Heart, which rivals the BBC in London, said: “Radio 1, especially the Chris Moyles show, is beginning to lose momentum. I don’t think it’ll be long before that spreads to the BBC’s other stations.

“The Elvis ad for Radio 2 is a great piece of TV, but I’m not sure it’ll permanently change people’s listening habits.”

Elvis And The Mo.

A Knight in Rusting Armour.......:-(

Extract from The New York Times today:

"Yet even as entertainment democracy proliferates, some question how well it works. While “Idol” continues to draw huge audiences, ABC’s singing competition, “The One,” last year drew record low ratings.

A CBS show, “Rock Star,” raised modest interest in two seasons but is seen as a long shot to return. Winners of another recent contest, YouTube’s “Underground” music video competition, landed an appearance on “Good Morning America” but remain a long way from stardom.

And some skeptics ask whether the spread of such contests is a reflection less of rising populism than of new marketing tricks.

“What it really represents is an ever more cleverly manipulated pop culture,” said Dave Marsh, a longtime rock critic and host of a Sirius satellite radio show. “Empowerment becomes a commodity.”

Indeed, if the contests so far are any indication, entertainment executives and network officials are not prepared to turn over decisions just yet. Usually a panel of judges made up of established industry figures winnow down the candidates either before or after voters have their say.

In criticizing the contests, Mr. Marsh said the mass market spots talent well enough: “The mob chose Elvis Presley, the mob chose James Brown, the mob chose the Beatles.”

With executives filtering the process, he said, the result is “disposable” performers “who are selected because they stay away from anything that’s personal or controversial.”

G B Shaw regarded Democracy as Mobocracy back in the 20s?

The sixth release from the “SR” label scheduled for an early February release is entitled ‘Rock In Black’ and will feature both the complete January 26th 1970 Las Vegas opening show and the complete February 22nd midnight show from the showroom. As with the other SR releases we get something new and a little different.
