The ChautauQua Tent Show rumbles into Radford Center for a long-anticipated engagement. The excitement and enthusiasm of the public is shared by the new manager of the traveling show, Walter Hale, who grew up in the business, first as a singer and then as a manager. In spite of the general atmosphere, there is a somber note reflected by Harrison Wilby, the town druggist, who is carrying on with Nita Bix.

All the high spirits disappear when Wilby's body is found floating in the town lake. A member of the show is arrested for murder in spite of his protestations of innocence. It remains for Walter to determine the identity of the real killer, but when he decides to put his detective work on stage to solve the crime, and earn some money doing it, Charlene is furious. But hale puts on a slam-bang final show, even to the public unmasking of the murderer, and by the time the final curtain falls, all but his romantic problem has been resolved.
