Movie Details

* The original title of "Love Me Tender" was "The Reno Brothers."

* Filming began in August 1956, and was completed in early October. Exteriors were filmed in San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles.

* "Love Me Tender" premiered on Broadway in New York City. On November 15, 1956, a huge 50-ft. tall cardboard cut-out was unveiled in front of the theatre. The fans went wild. It opened nationally on November 21.

* During filming, Elvis was still dating June Juanico, and he called her every night.

 

* The original closing sequence didn't feature a vignette of Clint Reno (Elvis) singing "Love Me Tender" after his burial.   It was revised after the reaction at a sneak preview.

* A few weeks into the shooting process, Steve Sholes of RCA came to the set and insisted that some songs had to be recorded for Elvis' second   album which was scheduled for November.

* On November 22, The Los Angeles Times said "Elvis can act. The boy's real good, even when he isn't singing."

* November 28, "Love Me Tender" entered Variety's top grossing box-office list at No.2 behind "Giant."

* The song "Love Me Tender" was based on an old civil war melody known as "Aura Lee."

* Advance orders of over 1 million for the single "Love Me Tender" helped 20th Century Fox to change the original title of "The Rheno Brothers" to "Love Me Tender."

Synopsis; During the last day of the Civil War, Vance Reno, and his two brothers, and a few members of a confederate cavalry troop, rob a Federal Army Payroll in the last days of the Civil War. Splitting up what they consider to be spoils of war, they divide the money and head home. But Vance learns that his girl has married his younger brother Clint, after they heard that Vance was killed in action. Vance decides the best thing to do is move on, and plans to make his peace with Cathy and Clint and he says goodbye during an family picnic. Meanwhile, a Major and a Pinkerton detective show up wiyh warrants for Vance and his brothers. Just as Vance agrees to return the money, Gavin makes a raid and frees the Reno brothers, who just became fugitives. Vance tries to convince the others to give up their payroll, but they refuse. Vance takes it from them by force, intending to return the money to Major Kincaid. Meanwhile Clint, at the urging of Vance's old platoon sergeant, is hunting Vance looking for revenge, and when he sees Vance, who has returned to explain everything, he shoots him. As the sergeant moves in for the kill, Clint realizes what he has done and defends his brother at the cost of his own life. At the end of the movie you see a vignette of Clint singing "Love Me Tender".

Richard Egan crossed paths with Elvis at least one more time after Love Me Tender. In 1972, he attended one of Elvis’ shows in Las Vegas and began a standing ovation while Elvis was singing his closing number. Egan died in 1977, the same year as Elvis.
