Synopsis;
Pacer Burton, a half-breed Kiowa, and his half brother Clint arrive at the family ranch to discover that their folks, Neddy, a full-blooded Kiowa, and Sam, have prepared a surprise birthday party for Clint. Also there are Tom and Will Howard and their sister Dorothy. Since the Howards have a ten-mile ride and the Pierces an even longer ride to the crossing, the party breaks up early. A Kiowa war party, led by Buffalo Horn, is waiting for the Howards and everyone is killed and the ranch burned.

Next morning Buffalo Horn arrives with an invitation to Pacer to join him. When Pacer refuses, he is told that his ranch will be the next to go. He and Neddy decide to go with Buffalo Horn to the Kiowa camp to try to stop this impending disaster for everyone. At the camp, Neddy finds the women fiercely against her. Pacer, however, is accepted and allowed to return home before making his decision. On the way back to the ranch, a crazed Will Howard, who has survived the massacre of his family, storms out of the night, kills Pacer's friend Two Moons and badly wounds Neddy in the process. Pacer brings her home to Sam, but she is clearly close to death. When they leave her for a moment, Neddy wanders off into the hills in search of what she calls her "Flaming Star." Sam and Pacer find her just before she dies.

Pacer takes the body of Two Moons back to the Kiowa encampment. There Two Moon's betrothed, Bird's Wing, tells him of the plan to attack the crossing that night. In his hatred, he degrees to help but extracts a promise that his father's place will be spared. While rounding up cattle, however, Sam Burton is ambushed and killed. Clint is wounded that evening and pacer leads the Kiowas away from his brother. By thia action, Pacer is mortally wounded as well.
