P:
Hey Andylon have you listened to the complete show ? Yesterday
I read your first nice thoughts about the cd ... especially
the never before part...
A: Yes, I heard it in its entirety and it amazed me how good
it is.
P: So you like
it?
A:
I would say compared to all the live shows I have in my collection,
this is the best produced soundboard CD so far.
P:
I know that you are in the Elvis-World for so long. You are
one of the most famous experts of all the Elvis material that
exists. You were a studio producer for many years, so you also
know a lot of the technical part of a production. Knowing all
that makes me now very proud that you like the CD.
A:
"If I like it" ? The words are not strong enough.
I simply love it. But don’t forget: I' going to interview you
and not the other way around.
P: But I should, because it’s very important for me to know
what you think about it.
A: Come on, how the hell is it possible to get this sound quality
? It's just astonishing. Because I work in studios all my life
how did you do that?
When I was young we had only some audience recordings with an
awful sound. But we had nothing else in these days. So we were
happy with it. Because this was the only thing you could get.
But later on, the well known Fort Baxter label appeared on the
collector's market. And there, for the first time we had a better
sound and it was fun to listen to it.
But
the good sound was only a result of the good tapes they had
for their productions. They simply put it 1:1 on cd like it
was on there tapes. Then the legendary "Diamond Anniversary
Edition" label came to life and they were the first who
really did a studio job on it. And this changed everything and
the whole import world was impressed. BMG never had problems
with those cheap, bad quality audience recordings but now there
was something which was really great. After that they decided
to take steps against the import world and bring out some of
their own material. So they have learned from those Labels.
And they discovered also that there is a real demand and a great
commercial interest and that’s why they later started their
own collectors label "Follow That Dream" (FTD).
A: Right, but I’m not completely satisfied with the sound quality.
P: I know what you mean, but they learned and are still learning
in doing it better ;-). See the wonderful spring tours cd. Normally
they would have removed all the hiss on it so the sound would
have been without distortion but the atmosphere would also have
been killed by doing it this way ...
A: Yes, it would sound a little bit dry then ...
P: Oh, you know exactly what I'm talking about!
Yes and on spring tour they've done a great job.
A: Before your cd came out, my favorite Import was a Diamond
one ; although they had a little too much echo on it.
P: yeah, they were the first doing this and after their releases
every import producer tried to copy it. But they simply put
tons of echo on it.
A: But you did something different ? Tell me your secret ?
P: it's easy ! We hired the best expert for audio restoration
in the world.
All the big studios hire him to restore the old expensive stuff.
And before we start to create the sound he had done an complete
audio restoration of the original tape.
If you want to know more details about the technical part I
will forward your request to him, and so you can get in touch
with him!
A: Really ? This would also be a never before!
P: hahahaha. If you want, we can do a complete "Making
Of" of the Capital performance CD
A: this would be great for our readers; when will we do that?
P: whenever you want!
A: wonderful, I want it right now.
P: lol - ok Andylon, you'll get the royal treatment.
A: Am I the Queen?
P: Lol.
A: but let’s come back to the topic!
P: you want to get serious ? Ok only kidding.
A: what was the most important part of the production for you?
P: Hm, that’s easy. I think I have to tell you a little story
if you don’t mind. I was on a message board and I read some
stuff about Jackie Kahane. There were also some youngster talking
in a bad way about Jackie. They said the typical stuff you can
read everywhere. I asked them about their age and they answered:
26. I said, hm ok, how many shows by Jackie Kahane did you attend
? Their answer was simple: they weren’t born , so they couldn't
be there !
Ok, how many shows have you heard from him ?
They answered: none.
So I wanted to know: how can you talk that bad about something
you don't know.
The only thing they could know are the 5 seconds from Elvis
On Tour.
Their knowledge is based on the critical acclaimed Goldman Book
and today we know that
we have to handle his statements about other persons very carefully.
So the freaks from the web board, they have never seen Jackie
or heard him before.
I thing the way they talk about the whole thing is not correct
& fair. Especially Elvis fans should not talk in a bad way
about stuff they don’t know like the yellow press does it.
This thing inspired me to give the fans the opportunity to let
the fans know the real Jackie Kahane. I'm sure after they have
heard him on our CD, The fans understand why the Elvis fans
and Elvis loved and liked him all those years as a stand up
comedian.
A: Do you know that you actually create a piece of history?
I'm a fan now for 42 years.
P: Yeah, I know and you are a big collector, also!
A: But I've never heard Jackie on any official or import cd.
Even my friends being also very loyal fans in the Elvis world
stated that they don’t have him on any tape. And now nearly
18 min . for god's sake. We just know him from a few seconds
from the Elvis on tour movie ... and he is for sure also a part
of the Elvis-history. It's a dream come true, fans can now listen
to him for the first time !
P: Did you enjoy the humor of Jackie?
A: ahhh, I’m honored to be one of the first persons in the Elvis
world hearing this historical event and I must admit the American
humor is not my cup of tea. But Jackie is so different and he
really has his own style no other stand up comedian has, I'd
say he should have had his own label lol
P: lol hahaha yes he was great, absolutely. Did you hear the
reaction of the audience during the show ?
A: yes the Elvis fans enjoyed it so did we . Together with my
friends, I played it many times and we are still laughing ,
we can’t get enough of it.
P: This pre-program was the most difficult part of the production.
A: why ? this is only talking.
P: because in the studio we gave him the same treatment as we
gave to the rest of the show and that’s not easy when you are
lying laughing on the floor.
A: and by the way, this was like it was that night, Jackie was
there, that’s what the people hear and saw that night.
P; our goal is to do things never done before and you stated
exactly that in your news that gave me the push to contact you.
to talk more about it.
I think we have done a great package the cd is packed to the
max with more than 79 minutes and I personally think that the
Kahane show is worth its money and in my opinion it's also important
to have that part of the Elvis History in the collection.
A: at least we have one…
P: we see ourselves as the follow up to the the legendary Diamond
and Baxter. But we don’t imitate, we just innovate. I think
I heard that somewhere else before lol
You said to me, that the history must be re-written. This is
true. Here we have this great concert with Elvis in top shape
and I want you to listen to Elvis singing "The Wonder Of
You" It sounds like 1970 but it’s 1975!!!
A: yes and don’t forget to mention "Polk Salad ..."
sounds to me like 1972.
P: that’s it - you got me. The people hear bad produced soundboards
and this is also bad for Elvis, he don't get the right treatment
he deserves and the atmosphere of that night won't come into
your living room by listening to those cheap products. You won't
hear it like it was that night - you really should talk to our
sound engineer ...
A: it doesn't sound like a soundboard any longer it's really
as if you're sitting right in the hall. And Elvis blows you
away.
P: What reaction do you expect concerning the reviews about
the CD on the internet. From the fans, on one website I expect
to get a bad review, that’s for sure, but they have there own
intentions to do so, but we will see if they will be fair.
I give you an example: when the CD ""Trying to get
to you" came out some weeks ago they treated it like it
never existed. Only the "Howdy Houston" was mentioned
as the best quality that was released and honestly there is
nearly no difference when you compare the sound on theses releases.
Because the tape came from the same source. And the webmasters
if that page will even try to deny that the LMP Label has the
better sound than Madison this time.
A: for me it is clear but try to be fair: which one would you
buy ? lol
I'll buy them both because I collect them all. And I want the
people to buy them both !
P: This is what I will do also. And I think there is enough
space for everyone and I really don’t speak in a bad way about
the Madison releases they did some nice jobs in the past but
we do things in a different way.
A: thanks for taking the time.
P: oh it was a pleasure for me
I'll let my sound engineer contact you soon.
